Ryan Gosling Says NC-17 Rating ‘Stigmatizes’ ‘Blue Valentine’

Actor ponders why his film received dreaded rating while racy ‘Black Swan’ is rated R. By Jocelyn Vena Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling attend the New York premiere of “Blue Valentine” on Tuesday Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images Both “Black Swan” and “Blue Valentine” push the sexual envelope, but only one of those two movies was deemed racy enough to get an NC-17 rating. And “Blue Valentine” star Ryan Gosling is none too pleased that it was his film that got the dreaded rating. “There’s plenty of oral sex scenes in a lot of movies, where it’s a man receiving it from a woman — and they’re R-rated. Ours is reversed and somehow it’s perceived as pornographic,” he said in an interview posted on AceShowbiz.com . ” ‘Black Swan’ has an oral scene between two women and that’s an R rating, but ours is between a husband and his wife and that’s NC-17?” Gosling went on to say that he finds it even more unbelievable that his film has been given the rating considering what sort of sexual conduct makes it into most R-rated films. “You start to think, ‘How is it possible that these movies that torture women in a sexual context can have an R rating but a husband and wife making love is inappropriate,’ ” he said. “A lot of people think, ‘What’s the big deal if it’s NC-17, the kids under 17 can’t see it,’ but that’s not true. “What it really means is it can’t play in a major theater chain and you can’t have ads for the film on television,” he continued. “It stigmatizes the movie in a big way. What we’re really saying is not that our kids can’t see this movie but nobody can see this movie unless you live in a big city and there’s an art house theater.” “Black Swan” director Darren Aronofsky reacted to the rating, saying, “I’ve heard the ‘Blue Valentine’ scene is more emotionally authentic.” Regardless of the film’s sexual content, “Blue Valentine” leading lady Michelle Williams is proud of her work and hopes that one day her daughter, Matilda, will understand where she was coming from when she made it. She explained, “I feel proud of this movie, and I feel like I could stand behind it when she grows up and says, ‘What were you doing for those two months in Pennsylvania?’ I feel like I could say, ‘This is what I made.’ ” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Lady Gaga ’60 Minutes’ Interview Details Revealed

‘She’s obviously a fascinating person,’ Anderson Cooper says about time he spent with the pop star. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images For those wondering when that “60 Minutes” interview with Lady Gaga and Anderson Cooper will air, the news anchor announced that it will air in February 2011, around the time of the Grammy Awards. He also revealed why he wanted to interview the “Bad Romance” singer so badly. “I was really interested to meet Lady Gaga … she’s obviously a fascinating person,” he said in a sit-down with “The Insider.” “What’s great about ’60 Minutes’ is you spend a lot of time with the person you’re profiling.” Cooper recounted just how much time he got to spend with the singer, who is going to release her new album in early 2011. “So to be able to spend a couple weekends with her in various places over the course of several months, it’s really cool,” he added. “And it’s really interesting and I’m learning stuff about her I never saw before.” Photos and some grainy YouTube footage of the two filming the interview in October found its way online soon after they were spotted in London on the South Bank of the Thames River chatting for the episode. Gaga was wearing a lacy bustier, platform ankle-high boots, fishnet stockings and sunglasses, with her long hair loose and down. Gaga recently tweeted that her album Born This Way is nearly complete, and Akon, her label boss, shared that he thinks Gaga is really stepping up her game with this album. “If I was going to compare it to her previous work, I would definitely say it’s a notch up,” Akon said. “It’s like she’s slowly taking you on to this journey down this road. If she were to just drastically do it, she probably would have lost everybody from the first album, but once the sound was created and established, now we can use that as a tool to grab all the monsters and walk them down this graveyard. It’s crazy. It’s amazing.” Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Gwyneth Paltrow To Guest-Star On ‘Glee’

‘Gwyneth is a great singer,’ creator Ryan Murphy tells the BBC. By Mawuse Ziegbe Gwyneth Paltrow Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty The hallways of William McKinley High are looking more and more like A-list red carpets. The hit show “Glee,” which just kicked off its second season, boasts upcoming cameos from Britney Spears and Oscar-winning actor Javier Bardem ready to rock the small screen. Now, another superstar is slated to drop in on the song-and-dance powerhouse: Gwyneth Paltrow. “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy recently told the BBC that the Academy Award winner and “Iron Man” star will showcase her pipes in two upcoming episodes in the second season as a substitute teacher for Will Schuester (played by Matthew Morrison). Murphy insisted that Paltrow, who is already renowned for her acting skills, can rip the mic as well. “Gwyneth is a great singer,” Murphy said. “She’s done it a little bit, but I really want to show it off and show everyone how great she is.” Paltrow is no stranger to the music scene. In addition to crooning in the 2000 movie “Duets” (and being married to superstar Coldplay frontman Chris Martin), Paltrow portrays a drug-addled country belter attempting a comeback in the upcoming movie “Country Strong.” “I played a country music singer. It’s all new, original work. It was incredible,” Paltrow told MTV News in May. Paltrow said she worked on building her musical skill set for the film, which features country hitmaker Tim McGraw and fellow music-dabbling actress Leighton Meester . “I had to learn how to play guitar, and I took singing lessons. It was a real challenge, but I felt like I pretty much pulled it off.” Paltrow’s song “Country Strong,” which she recorded for the movie, hit the Web in July. Taylor Swift Tapes Thank-You Message For ‘Mine’ Success

Country/pop star ties a Billboard record with single’s #3 debut. By James Dinh Taylor Swift Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images It’s only been a week since Taylor Swift’s “Mine” hit radio , but the lead single from her new album, Speak Now, is already making a splash on the upcoming Billboard Hot 100 with a #3 debut. According to Billboard, “Mine” makes chart history since Swift is only the second female artist in the history of the Hot 100 chart to debut multiple songs (“Mine” and “Today Was a Fairy Tale”) in the top five during a one-year time frame. Mariah Carey also accomplished this feat with her hits “Fantasy” and “One Sweet Day” in 1995. While “Mine” wasn’t able to dethrone Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” from the #1 spot, she is on top of the Hot Digital Songs chart with 297,000 in downloads. Swift recorded a video message thanking country radio for all the support, saying, “Konnichiwa! I just wanted to say hi to everybody, all my friends on country radio. I’m about to play for 45,000 people in Japan. Wish me luck. Thank you for the first week. I love you.” Fans will get their first glimpse of Swift performing “Mine” during a pre-recorded performance on the upcoming TV special “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock,” which airs September 1. Kings Of Leon Plan To Play Some ‘Beachy’ New Songs On Tour

‘It’ll be tough to not play the whole thing at Bonnaroo,’ drummer Nathan Followill says of upcoming album. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sasha Hamrogue Nathan Followill of Kings Of Leon Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images The Kings of Leon may have ditched the sunny climes of Los Angeles (or their native Nashville) to work on the follow-up to their breakout album, Only by the Night, but that doesn’t mean the new album is shaping up to be a dour affair. Far from it, in fact. “[This is] the first time we’d ever recorded in New York City, and we thought we’d come out with a little more darker record, because we had done all our records either in Nashville or L.A., where it’s a little more chilled out, not as much hustle and bustle,” KOL drummer Nathan Followill told MTV Radio during a Bonnaroo conference call Tuesday. “And I’ll be damned if we didn’t go in there and make a fun record! It’s got songs that are beachy, it’s got songs that are a little more like our Youth and Young Manhood days. … We’re super excited.” Followill said the new album is nearly finished and that he and the rest of the Kings are now putting the finishing touches on it back in Nashville. There’s still no title or release date (or song titles: “We haven’t even named ’em all yet, to be honest”), but there’s a pretty good chance the band’s fans will get a sneak peek of some of the new material on KOL’s upcoming tour, which kicks off June 5 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and includes a headlining slot at the 2010 Bonnaroo festival , set for June 10-13 in Manchester, Tennessee. “The record’s coming along great, man. It’ll be tough to not play the whole thing at Bonnaroo,” Followill laughed. “We’re going to try to be very selective of what we play, but there will definitely be some new tunes, for sure. … Anytime you’re coming into a tour after a new record, especially one that’s not even out yet, it’s pretty tough to not play the whole thing, so our set list at Bonnaroo, I think it’ll be a lot of oldies, a lot of goodies and probably a few more new ones than people are expecting for us.” Will you check out Kings of Leon’s upcoming tour? Chely Wright Comes Out

‘Nothing in my life has been more magical than the moment I decided to come out,’ country singer says, revealing her sexuality. By Josh Wigler Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images Country music singer Richell Rene “Chely” Wright has come out. In an interview with People.com , the “Shut Up and Drive” singer revealed her sexual preference, saying that she had previously resisted the urge to publicly address her homosexuality because she didn’t want to be the first country star to do so. “There had never, ever been a country music artist who had acknowledged his or her homosexuality,” she told the magazine in an article published Monday (May 3). “I wasn’t going to be the first” — but she changed her mind. “Nothing in my life has been more magical than the moment I decided to come out,” she said. Wright, 39, said she’d kept her sexuality from the public in order to protect her career as a musician. “I don’t have a memory in my life that doesn’t include the dream of making music,” the singer explained. “I hid everything for my music.” Wright will release her memoir, “Like Me,” and her new album, Lifted Off the Ground, on Tuesday. Additionally, the singer will appear on the “Today” show on Wednesday to discuss her new endeavors and further elaborate on her personal journey. Wright’s first album, Woman in the Moon, debuted in 1994. She has won multiple awards, including several from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. Lifted Off the Ground is Wright’s first album of all-new material in five years.

John Mayer Apologizes For Controversial Playboy Interview

‘I’ve created somewhat of a monster,’ singer says on Twitter about his open demeanor in interviews and arguably racist comments. By MTV News staff John Mayer Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images Not surprisingly, given his copious use of Twitter in the past, John Mayer tweeted Wednesday about the uproar over his controversial interview with Playboy, in which he talked freely about sex, former girlfriends Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson, and — most controversially — made comments about black women and his lack of a ” ‘hood pass” that many have perceived as racist. In a series of tweets on Wednesday afternoon (February 10), Mayer wrote: “Re: using the ‘N word’ in an interview: I am sorry that I used the word. And it’s such a shame that I did because the point I was trying to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself. It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it, because I realize that there’s no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged. “And while I’m using today for looking at myself under harsh light,” he continued. “I think it’s time to stop trying to be so raw in interviews. It started as an attempt to not let the waves of criticism get to me, but it’s gotten out of hand and I’ve created somewhat of a monster. I wanted to be a blues guitar player. And a singer. And a songwriter. Not a shock jock. I don’t have the stomach for it. “Again, because I don’t want anyone to think I’m equivocating: I should have never said the word and I will never say it again.” What do you think of John Mayer’s apology?
