Carell jokes to MTV News about his co-star in Bennett Miller’s ‘Foxcatcher’: ‘He doesn’t threaten me. Come on!’ By Kevin P. Sullivan Steve Carell Photo: Channing Tatum , the challenge has been made. When MTV News spoke with Steve Carell during a press day for his new film, ” Seeking a Friend for the End of the World ,” he filled us in on the status of his upcoming project, Bennett Miller ‘s ” Foxcatcher .” “I am beginning shooting on that in October. I don’t know when they’re going to release it,” Carell said. “I’ve signed on to do it. I’m excited. It’s a good script.” Miller, the director of “Moneyball,” will helm a cast that includes Carell, Mark Ruffalo and Tatum. “Foxcatcher” tells the true-life story of John duPont, millionaire and member of the famous family. DuPont established a wrestling training site for Olympians, and one day murdered gold medalist David Schultz (Tatum). The project is certainly high profile, considering both the A-list cast and the awards success Miller had last year with “Moneyball” and his first feature, “Capote.” Carell seemed genuinely excited about the start of production, but when the discussion turned to a potential abdominal comparison between him and Tatum, things got deathly serious and seriously funny. Asked if he was getting in shape, Carell replied: “No need. We could have a pose-off right now, and I would just win hands down — no competition there.” Not letting the topic end there, he joked of Tatum, “He doesn’t threaten me. Come on!” “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” opens in theaters June 22. Here is the first trailer for Hope Springs , featuring Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones as a 60-something married couple on a steep sexual downswing. What to do? Travel to Dr. Steve Carell’s Seaside Coitus Clinic, of course, where, with the director of The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me , the group will explore the all the carnal dilemmas of our proto-senior population. I don’t know about crankypants Jones, but I predict that at least the box office for this thing — which Sony will open Aug. 10, right around the time the studio’s ” Julie & Julia ” hit big three years ago — will be rock hard. VERDICT : Sold! (To our parents)

This should be interesting (or completely familiar, depending on how they play it): According to Deadline, Vince Vaughn is set to star in a feature adaptation of The Rockford Files , the ’70s-era detective series that starred James Garner as a disheveled Los Angeles private eye. The involvement of scripting duo David Levien and Brian Koppelman ( Rounders , Ocean’s Thirteen , Solitary Man ) is somewhat promising, though Vaughn hasn’t shown any desire to move away from his tired Vince Vaughn shtick of late — and do audiences really want a Vince Vaughn-ified Jim Rockford? Besides, if Steve Carell and David Shore couldn’t make a Rockford reboot work, how will Vaughn & Co. fare? [ Deadline ]
MTV News brings you a timeline of all the obstacles that once stood in the way of the now-greenlit sequel. By Fallon Prinzivalli Will Ferrell in “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” Photo: DreamWorks Pictures Movie fans were overjoyed by Will Ferrell ‘s announcement Wednesday night that “Anchorman 2″ is finally happening . The long journey since the release of the first film left us doubting whether a sequel would ever happen. With our doubts cast aside and our excitement on the rise, we’ve compiled a timeline of all the obstacles the team overcame to arrive at the ultimate destination. August 14, 2008 : Paul Rudd tells us he thinks ” Anchorman ” director Adam McKay and actor Will Ferrell were interested in doing a sequel. “Last I heard they were starting to write [‘Anchorman 2’],” Rudd says. The setting? Possibly the ’80s or the moon . May 27, 2009 : Ferrell tells Aussie radio DJs Jono & Dana that he’ll be meeting with the “Anchorman” creators to “figure out when and how” to get a sequel in the works. August 28, 2009 : In an interview with Empire magazine, “Anchorman” producer Judd Apatow suggests that in “Anchorman 2,” Ron Burgundy, Brick Tamland and Brian Fantana will return as elderly men. “Those anchormen sometimes have their jobs until they’re 75 years old,” Apatow says. September 1, 2009 : Director McKay says that, due to the cast and crew’s busy schedules, the sequel won’t be available for another two years . He adds, “But we are definitely doing it.” Whew. April 6, 2010 : Steve Carell confirms to our very own Josh Horowitz that the “Anchorman” cast “want[s] to do another one,” but there is no script. “I don’t think they’ve [even] decided on a story line yet,” Carell says. April 8, 2010 : On the red carpet for his movie “Date Night,” Carell lies about everything. He says “Anchorman 2” has already been shot in “just two days” while the cast was drunk. When asked if it was any good he says, “It’s fantastic!” Honestly, with the talent in these comedians, we wouldn’t be surprised if it was. April 27, 2010 : Adam McKay reveals that, aside from the actor’s schedules, another holdup in the sequel is payment . Since the cast went on to become even more famous after the first movie, “Everybody’s prices went up.” Graciously, the cast agreed to take a pay cut, which is almost unheard of in Hollywood. April 29, 2010 : McKay dashes all our hopes and dreams in a single tweet : “So bummed. Paramount basically passed on Anchorman 2. Even after we cut our budget down. We tried.” May 3, 2010 : Hope is restored! As it turns out, Paramount is eager to film the sequel. Deadline reports, however, the “Anchorman” team is forced to regroup as they have a budget gap of $30 million to overcome. June 6, 2010 : With financial issues in the way, Paul Rudd jokes that if “Anchorman 2” doesn’t happen, “We’ll look to do ‘Anchorman 3.’ ” July 19, 2010 : Yet again, it seems as if “Anchorman 2” is never going to happen. The saddest part? Neither is the proposed “Anchorman” musical . A few days later, Christina Applegate says she feels let down by the news. May 2, 2011 : All hope is officially lost when Ferrell tells Collider that the sequel “is a brick wall right now” and they’re “playing around with the idea” of a “Step Brothers” sequel instead. And suddenly… March 28, 2012 : Ferrell announces on “Conan” that “Anchorman 2” is officially happening with the original director, Adam McKay, and most of the principal castmembers, including Steve Carell and Paul Rudd. The stars have aligned. It’s finally happening. Cue celebration! The bad news: Despicable Me 2 does not arrive until 2013. The good news: Steve Carell and his minions are already back is the trailer! The original earned $540 million in 201o, not shabby for the first CGI feature produced by Universal, and the first feature film by Illumination Entertainment. If this first taste is any indication, Despicable Me 2 looks like it should be just as big a hit: Despicable Me 2 Trailer
I’ll admit it: I groaned a bit when word first broke that Steve Carell and Keira Knightley were set to play opposite each other in a romantic comedy set against the end of the world. Knightley, I dreaded, would be reduced to playing May-December arm candy to Carell in her first non-heavy project since Bend it Like Beckham . But as the first trailer for Lorene Scafaria ‘s Seeking a Friend for the End of the World demonstrates, maybe I shouldn’t have worried so much. Maybe . Carell and Knightley play neighbors who set out on a road trip to find their respective loved ones before the world ends after an asteroid is discovering hurtling towards Earth. Scafaria, who penned the zingy hipster romance Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist , makes her directorial debut working from her own script, and from the looks of things this could offer unexpected sorts of laughs, not to mention the rare comic turn by Knightley. That said, Carell seems to be pulling his straightlaced shtick yet again, and Knightley’s afghan-wearing Brit veers dangerously toward manic pixie dream girl territory; will her carefree ways open up his stuffy world view? Will she help him find his way to his high school sweetheart’s arms, only to find she’s fallen in love with him? I hope not. I hope End of the World surprises me. At least we’ll get Melanie Lynskey, Patton Oswalt and Gillian Jacobs to add some colorful bits along the way. Verdict: Tentatively going along for the ride. [via Yahoo ]
