Can James Franco and Anne Hathaway Save the Oscars for Generation Y?

The stages of reaction to the news that James Franco and Anne Hathaway will host the Academy Awards next year are turning over at a record pace. There was initial shock at the randomness of their selection; the acceptance that maybe the pair would make beautiful — if awkward — music together; and now, the rationalizations for putting them on the Kodak Theater stage in the first place. “This year’s telecast isn’t just about ‘getting to the youth’ — its whole theme is going to reflect on this history of movies through the perspective of a young person experiencing the movies for the first time,” an insider told Vulture . Which is a fancy way of saying it’s about getting to the youth.

92nd Street Y Blasts Steve Martin Event, Wishes He Played His Old Stuff

A 92nd Street Y event with Steve Martin was interrupted on Monday night when interviewer Deborah Solomon was handed a note, which she read aloud, asking her to focus more on Martin’s career. Apparently, the note was in response to angry e-mails from viewers watching on closed-circuit TVs who felt that the presentation focused too much on the art world, which is the setting Martin’s latest novel, The Object of Beauty . Besides interrupting the interview, the 92nd Street Y has sent an email apologizing and offering all who were unsatisfied a $50 gift certificate refund. Both Solomon and Martin himself have condemned this move as unnecessary and disrespectful, and frankly, it looks as though they’re right.

Thanks to Betty White, the May 8 edition of Saturday Night Live posted the show’s highest ratings in 18 months. That hilarious hosting gig came about as the result of a passionate group of White supporters on Facebook, who created a group that pressured NBC to consider the actress. Now, fans of White are at it again: the Facebook page “Getting Betty White to Host the Academy Awards” has amassed over 6,000 followers since launching Sunday night. Monica Potter On Overcoming Her Fears of Parenthood and Bluetooth Technology

Over the course of Monica Potter’s 15-year acting career, the Cleveland-born actress has divided her time between the big screen, with projects like Con Air and Along Came a Spider , and the small screen, with series Boston Legal and Trust Me . But when executive producer Jason Katims ( Friday Night Lights ) offered Potter the opportunity to converge mediums with Parenthood , NBC’ s dramedy based on the 1989 Steve Martin film, the actress hesitated. A mother of three herself, Potter was not sure that she could accurately portray Kristina Braverman, a tightly wound mother trying to raise her autistic son (Max Burkholder) and teenage daughter Haddie (Sarah Ramos) while maintaining her marriage (to Adam, played by Peter Krause) and navigating the many relationships of her her in-laws, the mighty Braverman clan. Last week, Potter tested out her new hands-free technology by phoning Movieline to explain how she conquered her fear of TV motherhood, reclaimed her Cleveland accent and felt after her favorite character was canceled.
