Lady Gaga’s ‘Alejandro’ Director Explains Video’s Painful Meaning

Steven Klein says the clip is about ‘the pain of living without your true love.’ By James Montgomery Lady Gaga in her “Alejandro” video Photo: Interscope Records Before working with Lady Gaga on the just-released “Alejandro,” famed fashion photographer Steven Klein had never directed a proper music video. But after seeing Gaga perform live, he knew it was time to take the plunge. “I went to see her show in NYC, and it felt like performance art in the ’90s. And I had not seen anything like that in a while,” Klein told MTV News in an e-mail. “Lady Gaga approached me about doing this particular song, and in the past, I have passed on such offers, but this time I felt [a] narrative drive you could make interesting, and we both aligned on the vision for the film.” Working closely with Gaga, the two created an eight-minute-plus, darkly surreal epic that draws equally from Madonna and Marlene Dietrich (to name just a few). Of course, given that Gaga and Klein are among the hottest names in their respective fields, getting together to plan “Alejandro” was difficult — and actually shooting it was nearly impossible. “I had a vision and story for the film, she reacted to it, then we both collaborated … We shot in Los Angeles on April 30, 2010,” Klein wrote. “My schedule and hers are both complicated, so it took a lot to get the days that we both could work together.” Now that the “Alejandro” video has been unleashed on the world, we figured we’d ask Klein to reveal what inspired the clip … or, at least explain what the heck it’s all about. “I was not thinking in terms [of influences.] I saw it more as a combination of cinema and theater,” Klein wrote.

Lady Gaga "Alejandro" Music Video: Released!

After a brief tease the other day, Lady Gaga has released the full video for her newest hit, “Alejandro,” and it’s as epic and brazenly self-indulgent as you think. At this point, did you expect anything less from Lady Gaga? Filmed by acclaimed photographer Steven Klein, Gaga calls the nine-minute video pure “celebration of [her] love and appreciation for the gay community.” That might explain the shirtless men with bowl cuts dancing in high heels, plus Gaga stripping for them in a giant orgy, plus the obligatory Catholic imagery. It’s as if she wants it to be controversial or something. She’s set the bar high (musically, and with Lady Gaga hermaphrodite rumors), so she’s got a lot to live up to. Does “Alejeandro” do it? Miley Cyrus: Untamed in Paris!

Let’s give Miley Cyrus credit. With the release of her new single, “Can’t Be Tamed,” the singer made it clear that she’s shed the innocent image of Hannah Montana. She’s continued that sexy trend ever since, performing on Dancing with the Stars and dressing like this during a concert in Portugal. As long as Miley keeps it real, we’re okay with this new, mature, seductive side. Just don’t pretend like you’re still a naive Disney teen, Miles. You know exactly what you’re doing. And she did it again in Paris last night, exposing more skin than ever before at Club 1515. Don’t ogle too much, fellas. She’s still only 17 years old…

First Look: Lady Gaga "Alejandro" Video Teaser

It seems like just a few months ago that we were buzzing over Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” music video . We suppose it was. But she’s already got a new hit. On the singer’s CNN appearance Tuesday night, she told Larry King that the music video for her current single, “Alejandro,” will be premiering very soon. She explained that the video has a “homoerotic military theme.” Well, sure, all the good ones do. While it won’t address hermaphrodite rumors the way “Telephone” did, it does contain an important theme for Lady G. “It is a celebration of my love and appreciation for the gay community, my admiration of their bravery, love for one another and their courage,” said Gaga. The new video, directed by fashion photographer Steven Klein, is at least partially in black and white. Watch the clip below and tell us what you think: Alejandro Teaser

Lady Gaga Says ‘Alejandro’ Video Won’t Be ‘Telephone’ Sequel

Third video from Fame Monster rumored to be directed by fashion photographer Steven Klein. By James Dinh Lady Gaga Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage After the enormous attention Lady Gaga’s elaborate “Telephone” video has received, expectations are very high for her next one. The singer, who is currently on tour in Australia, talked with radio station Nova 96.9 FM and dished a bit about what she has in store for “Alejandro,” the third clip from her Fame Monster LP. “I’m so excited about the ‘Alejandro’ video,” she told the station. “Actually, we’re shooting it very soon and I don’t want to say who the director is yet because it’s going to give a lot away.” When asked her if she could reveal anything more, it was evident that she intends on keeping the music video’s concept secret. “Are you absolutely mad? I would never, ever tell you!” she laughed. “I would be more likely to lie through my teeth to you what the video’s about so that you could all be surprised. But I will tell you it’s not the sequel to the ‘Telephone’ video.” WWD reported on Tuesday that fashion photographer Steven Klein will helm the clip, but that information had not been confirmed at press time; reps for Gaga and Klein had not confirmed or provided MTV News with details about the video. For the moment, Gaga is enjoying touring Australia. “What mayhem in Melbourne tonight. Some kids just understand what it means live your eyeliner, breathe your lipstick, and kill for each other.” she tweeted on Tuesday . “Writing music, leopard tights, monster varsity jacket I’m grateful to have fans that continue to inspire me Ready to sweat tonight Melbourne,” she Gaga tweeted a few hours later . Jennifer Aniston, Gerard Butler Heat Up W

Maybe they’re just friends , maybe they’re not. But Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler definitely got down, dirty and downright smoldering for the W Magazine cover! How dirty? Literally pretty dirty. Jennifer’s stylist, Chris McMillan, was instructed by famed photographer Steven Klein, not to wash her hair. The result? Raw sexiness. “At the end of the first day, Steven came up to me and goes, ‘Could you please ask her if she could not wash her hair and just show up tomorrow?'” McMillan recalls. The Bounty Hunter actress was all too happy to oblige – and just look at the results. If Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler were any hotter, well, they’d be Brangelina. Ironically, Jen and Gerry’s cover shoot was done by Klein, who shot Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie , ’60s family style, for the mag back in 2005. Begging the question … Which W Magazine cover couple is hotter?
