12 Films of Christmas: Gremlins

This selection from Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas gives us a horror hit that forever changed portrayals of Christmas — not to mention the MPAA : On a trip to New York City, unsuccessful inventor Rand Peltzer (Hoyt Axton) searches for a Christmas present for his son Billy (Zach Galligan), and in Chinatown he finds an adorable creature known as a mogwai. The old shopkeeper (Keye Luke) refuses to sell it, but his grandson secretly lets Rand have it for $300. There are rules to be followed in keeping the creature: Keep it away from bright light, don’t let it get wet, and don’t feed it after midnight.

REVIEW: Characters Deserve Better in Violent Killer Inside Me

The brash violence of Michael Winterbottom’s The Killer Inside Me — adapted from Jim Thompson’s merciless and enthralling 1952 pulp novel about a psychotic West Texas sheriff — began dividing audiences last January at Sundance . It also appears to have divided Winterbottom himself, though he doesn’t know it. The controversy involves two particularly violent scenes, one a protracted sequence in which a character played by Jessica Alba is beaten until her face resembles what one character calls “stewed meat, hamburger.” The nutso sheriff, played by Casey Affleck, throws perhaps some 20 punches; we see about six or seven of them land, as Alba’s face becomes progressively bruised, bloodied and misshapen, until it resembles a cracked-open, oversized plum.

Jeremy London Kidnapped, Forced to Smoke Dope

While attempting to change a flat tire in Palm Springs, former Party of Five star Jeremy London was kidnapped by two men who forced the former drug-addicted actor to smoke crack cocaine (or amphetamines, London wasn’t certain) and distribute liquor in a gang area of the town — all while being held at gunpoint. Radar reports that two men were charged Wednesday over the incident, which lasted five hours before London escaped. [ Radar ]

Steven Spielberg Lines Up Cast for War Horse

Hey, remember when Steven Spielberg actually directed movies and didn’t just produce them? (Deep breath: He’s shepherding Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter , The Coen Brothers’ True Grit , Transformers 3 , Cowboys and Aliens , Real Steel , Super 8 and I Am Number Four , to name seven.) Well, not only does he have The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn coming in 2011, but he’s also got that reported adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s novel, War Horse , on the way as well. And that one’s just staffed up with the nicest set of UK character actors this side of Harry Potter .

Is Spielberg’s New Lead Eddie Redmayne?

I guess having that locked-in release date of August 10, 2011 is just what Steven Spielberg needed to really commit to making War Horse his next film. The Playlist hears that he’s gone ahead and cast Verge alum Eddie Redmayne in the story of a farmer’s son who longs to be reunited with his favorite horse during the first World War. I’m guessing that Eddie isn’t the horse (though it certainly might make things a little more interesting). [ The Playlist ]
