On DVD: Get Your Swoon on With Ava Gardner, Flying Dutchman

Barely heralded today among the midcentury Hollywood auteurs, Albert Lewin was as distinct in his personality as Alfred Hitchcock or Fritz Lang or Sam Fuller, and just as much of a terrarium-maker. His micro-worlds, including the new-to-disc 1951 classic Pandora and the Flying Dutchman , had a particularly dreamy vibe. His most-seen film, the 1945 version of The Picture of Dorian Gray , is unforgettable not for its fidelity to Wilde’s morality play but for its very strange, doomed-romantic bell-jar effect, a movie seemingly made up entirely from Hurd Hatfield’s cheekbones, Angela Lansbury’s round eyes, a single Victorian tavern set, and mist.

Adam Yauch Loses Unfinished MPAA Appeal

The MPAA today upheld its R rating for the Holocaust documentary A Film Unfinished — the same R rating that Beastie Boy and indie distributor Adam Yauch decried as “bullsh*t” ahead of this week’s appeal. The ratings board was not swayed by the citation of the PG-13 Holocaust doc The Last Days , which, like A Film Unfinished features “disturbing images of Holocaust atrocities including graphic nudity,” but which was also produced by Steven Spielberg, so you do the math. Alas. A Film Unfinished opens Aug. 18. [ Oscilloscope Laboratories ]

World Cup Scores: All Tied Up – Idol Chatter

After all the hoopla, all the anticipation, the World Cup 2010 competition opens with… a 1-1 tie between Mexico and host country South Africa. Yes, folks, sports can end in a tie, a draw, Even Steven, and not just in. … My reaction #1: There is something beautiful, dare I say spiritual, about a hard-fought sports match that can end in a tie. They prepared, they battled, they pushed it as hard and far as they could, and they end up equal, forced to be satisfied with …

Gary Coleman’s Family, Friends and Agent to Shannon Price: You Suck!

As we discussed earlier, Shannon Price may be the worst person ever. First, Gary Coleman’s ex-wife said during the 911 call she made that she wouldn’t drive him to the hospital herself because she didn’t want to be traumatized. We gave her the benefit of the doubt there … foolishly. Soon enough, she’s selling Gary Coleman death photos and hawking interviews to the highest bidder. It’s no surprise that people close to Coleman are as appalled as we. Victor Perillo, Gary’s former agent, is sick after hearing reports that his ex-wife Shannon Price took and sold photos of the former child star on his death bed. Gary took Shannon to Divorce Court. It’s easy to see why . The photos, showing Coleman in the hospital with tubes attached to him, “were never meant to get out,” insists Price’s family … even though she sold them. Perillo said : “While Gary Coleman’s family continues to privately grieve the passing of their son, they would like to thank all of his fans for their generous support.” “This kind gentle soul left the world with many beautiful memories to cherish.” “That is why I am personally appalled to hear the news that some individuals are selling photos of Gary in the hospital. This is unconscionable and despicable. I would like to praise all the reputable news organizations that declined the offers.” “I hope others will do the same out of respect and human decency.” Coleman’s Diff’rent Strokes costar Todd Bridges even Twittered: “To find out pics of Gary Coleman in his last days got out, I hope someone burns in hell.” Hard to argue with Todd there.

Lady Gaga "Alejandro" Music Video: Released!

After a brief tease the other day, Lady Gaga has released the full video for her newest hit, “Alejandro,” and it’s as epic and brazenly self-indulgent as you think. At this point, did you expect anything less from Lady Gaga? Filmed by acclaimed photographer Steven Klein, Gaga calls the nine-minute video pure “celebration of [her] love and appreciation for the gay community.” That might explain the shirtless men with bowl cuts dancing in high heels, plus Gaga stripping for them in a giant orgy, plus the obligatory Catholic imagery. It’s as if she wants it to be controversial or something. She’s set the bar high (musically, and with Lady Gaga hermaphrodite rumors), so she’s got a lot to live up to. Does “Alejeandro” do it? Watch and vote … Lady Gaga: Alejandro What do you think of Lady Gaga’s “Alejandro” video?

Lady Gaga’s ‘Alejandro’ Video Fashions From Eva Peron To Steampunk

New video features S&M outfits, a latex nun’s habit and other controversial high fashion. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga in “Alejandro” Photo: Interscope Records In every performance she gives, Lady Gaga pays as much attention to her look as to her sound. She knows that her “little monsters” will examine each of her looks and try to re-create them. And in her new video for “Alejandro,” which debuted online on Tuesday (June 8), Gaga’s video style is very dark, very black-and-white and very German. And while the song’s Spanish, sun-soaked vibe could lend itself to cheery styles, instead Gaga took a turn for the dark. Most of the looks she wears in the clip, directed by fashion photographer Steven Klein, are more reminiscent of ones that may have been popular in Germany during the ’20s and ’30s. The looks of the video range from high fashion to high blasphemy, as Gaga takes on Catholic imagery. She not only sports a red latex nun’s habit, she also wears a hooded white-and-red tunic that feels like something that Joan of Arc would wear at the stake. Gaga does pay homage to the song’s Latin vibe in the opening funeral scene, when she wears a black lace veil reminiscent of an Eva Peron outfit — or something Madonna would have worn as Eva Peron in “Evita.” That is certainly not where the Madonna style references begin or end. At one point, when the video takes a turn for the “Vogue,” Gaga is seen alone dancing around in a black pant suit that could have easily been worn by Madge in 1990 (back when Madonna was channeling German movie icon Marlene Dietrich). Gaga even has her own take on Madonna’s infamous Gaultier cone bra, only Gaga has made it her own by replacing the cones with rifles. Then again, there are fashion references that are now becoming distinctly Gaga. She dances around in nude-colored underwear. She wears a black Victorian style dress, complete with steampunk goggles, a look that would have been at home in her “Paparazzi” video. Rocker Gaga, complete with black underwear, leather jacket, sunglasses and slicked-back hair, also makes a cameo. It feels like the woman we saw asking Beyonc

Is Jamie Bell Your New Spider-Man?

Forget Logan Lerman , Josh Hutcherson and — sadly — Donald Glover . Your next Peter Parker is definitely-probably-maybe Jamie Bell. Or, maybe not. The latest casting rumor for Marc Webb’s reboot of Spider-Man comes from the site Bleeding Cool , which reports that Bell has defeated all other comers to earn the coveted role. The British actor should be used to cartoons by now: He’s already toplining the Steven Spielberg/Peter Jackson adaptation of The Adventures of Tin Tin . Friend of Ray Charles Defends Steven Seagal, Shoots Down Sexual Harassment Accusations

First a former employee went on record this week with nice things to say about Steven Seagal. Now, the actor has someone else in his corner: Damien Ross, a former friend of Ray Charles, told TMZ that he set up the initial meeting between Ray’s granddaughter, Blair Robinson, and the actor. It took place in a Memphis hotel in 2004, so Seagal could interview her for a personal assistant position. Robinson has since accused Seagal of demanding sexual favors from her. Does Steven Seagal think he’s above the law? Or is the actor being wrongly accused? Ross says Robinson was never alone with Seagal and never even had a room in the same hotel as the troubled star, which contradicts what Blair wrote in a sworn statement last week. As for Seagal’s lawyer, Marty Singer, he also questions Robinson’s allegations and motives: “Ms. Robinson was never employed by Steven Seagal and never received any compensation from any entity even though she claimed to have worked more than six years ago for my client.”
