Following Miley and her mother coming out in support of a ban against horse drawn carriages in New York City, CONA board member Tommy Doyle has fired back at the star via TMZ. Doyle insists there is no animal abuse in the industry and that the horses are “properly tended to” and “very well taken care of.” “How many times has Miley spent with working horses?” he asks. “Does she even know what a healthy horse looks like? Has she been in the barn to see these animals?” Cyrus is not the only famous person involved in this fight. Lea Michele and Alec Baldwin have expressed outrage at the carriage practice as well.
Over the next month, attendees at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York City will be in for a surprise: An Oscar-winning actress, asleep in a glass box. As co-creator of a piece titled “The Maybe,” Tilda Swindon will arrive at unannounced times and lie down for all to see. The museum itself will reportedly be unaware of when Swindon takes part in the exhibit, which will be moved all around the grounds, as explained in the following MoMA statement to The Gothamist : “An integral part of ‘The Maybe’s incarnation at MoMA in 2013 is that there is no published schedule for its appearance, no artist’s statement released, no museum statement beyond this brief context, no public profile or image issued. Beaten down by months of snow, wind and cold, an Ohio county has issued an “indictment” against Punxsutawney Phil over his Groundhog Day prediction . Phil did not see his shadow February 2, signaling spring’s imminent arrival. Six days later, Winter Storm Nemo dumped 30 inches of snow on New England. Six weeks later, temperatures across the Northern U.S. remain frigid. Birds chirping? Flowers blooming? No sign of those anywhere. As a result, (hopefully) tongue-in-cheek Butler County, Oh., prosecutors are demanding justice, claiming Phil deliberately misled the American people. They say such a felony should be punished by death. Butler County’s chief prosecutor filed an official brief about this, lambasting the rodent for actions “against the peace and dignity of the state of Ohio.” “Punxsutawney Phil did purposely, and with prior calculation and design, cause the people to believe that spring would come early,” wrote Mike Gmoser. He vowed to bring the Pennsylvania icon to justice in the neighboring Buckeye State, but Phil’s handlers are having none of it, coming to his defense. Bill Deeley, president of the club that organizes Groundhog Day, said Phil has a lawyer and would fight attempted extradition by the Ohio authorities. “We’ll have to plead our case one way or the other, but I think we can beat the rap,” Deeley said, taking Butler County’s indictment more or less in stride. Criminally negligent or not, Phil really dropped the ball in 2013. This winter was pretty harsh, at least by recent standards, and grew worse if anything following Phil’s prognostication that spring would come early. Case in point: There’s another storm due on Sunday/Monday that could bring several additional inches of snow across the Midwest and Northeast. The first day of Spring was Thursday, March 21.

A couple in Las Cruces, New Mexico was arrested Friday after police discovered an eight-year old girl locked inside a wooden cage. According to The Las Cruces Sun-News , officials were checking on the welfare of this developmentally disabled child when they came upon the horrific scene, as the woman and her boyfriend were reportedly at a movie when they left her alone in a cage the size of a crib. Cindy Patriarchias (who is charged with negligently causing child abuse) and Edmond Gonzales (who is charged with negligently permitting child abuse) remain in custody. A police spokesperson says the couple was actually in the process of trying to adopt the girl when they were arrested. Fortunately, she did not appear to suffer any injuries as a result of this lock-up.

That’s just an estimate too because the overall cost for Sandy’s destruction is expected to rise. According to The Huffington Post : Superstorm Sandy caused at least $29.4 billion in overall damage in New Jersey, according to a preliminary analysis released by Governor Chris Christie’s office Friday. The estimate of the damage caused by the storm, which ravaged the Northeastern U.S. coastline late last month, includes personal property, business, infrastructure and utility damage, Christie said in a statement. The statement said the preliminary cost estimate is “inclusive of aid received to date and anticipated from federal sources,” including the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Small Business Administration. Christie said it was a “conservative and responsible estimate” that could be revised higher, Christie said. Last week, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said he planned to ask the federal government for $30 billion in disaster aid for the state. Earlier this month, New York City Comptroller John Liu said the storm was costing New York City $200 million a day in lost economic activity, with that amount likely to top out at about $1 billion. “This preliminary number is based on the best available data, field observations and geographical mapping, and supported by expert advice from my Cabinet commissioners and an outside consulting company,” Christie said in the statement Friday. Christie said the estimate will be refined in the future to include impact on the next tourist seasons, real estate values and population shifts. The record-breaking “superstorm” blasted through eight Northeastern U.S. states on Oct. 30, killing dozens of people, battering coastal neighborhoods and forcing mass evacuations. According to The Huffington Post though, Governor Christie doesn’t give a fawk what Robney’s camp is saying: Christie responded to the report during a press conference on Tuesday, saying that Romney had called him last Sunday to get an update on the situation as Hurricane Sandy headed toward New Jersey. “I told Governor Romney at that time that if the storm landed as predicted that it was going to be catastrophic to New Jersey and unprecedented,” Christie said. “I said to him, ‘Listen, Mitt, if this storm hits the way I think it’s going to, I’m off the campaign trail from here to Election Day.’ And he said to me, ‘Chris, of course. That’s what you have to do. Do your job, don’t worry about me. I’ll take care of things.’ So all this other noise, I think, is coming from know-nothing, disgruntled Romney staffers who, you know, don’t like the fact that I said nice things about the President of the United States. Well, that’s too bad for them.” “He told me last Sunday night that he expected no other political travel or help from me over the course of the remaining time between then and the election, if in fact the storm hit the way it was projected,” Christie continued. “If it missed us, I would have been happy to go out on the road and help him. But it didn’t.” The superstorm devastated parts of New Jersey and left millions without power. President Barack Obama declared New Jersey a major disaster area, freeing up federal aid to help with the storm recovery. Christie said last week that the federal response “has been great.” “I was on the phone at midnight again last night with the president personally,” Christie said. “The president has been outstanding in this, and so the folks of FEMA, Craig Fugate and his folks have been excellent.” Politico reported earlier this week that Romney insiders were unhappy with Christie’s praise for Obama, which one described as “over the top.” A source inside Romney’s campaign also told Jon Ward that Christie should have attended a rally in Morrisville, Pa., 20 minutes from Trenton, the New Jersey capital. “You can’t tell me he couldn’t have gone over there for a night rally,” the source told Ward.
