According to the research, the hormone ghrelin, which is known as the “hunger hormone,” increased by 23 percent after subjects initially lost weight, causing people’s cravings to go berserk. But during the 52 weeks of a monitored diet, ghrelin decreased to seven percent. Browder’s story is one of the more tragic ones in American history. In 2010, at age 16, Browder was arrested for allegedly stealing a backpack. He was jailed at Rikers Island for three years, spending two of them in solitary confinement, while awaiting a trial. While he was jailed, he attempted suicide five times. The charges against him were dropped in 2013 and he was let “free” without ever going to trial.
