Lady Gaga Is ‘Fearless’ In ‘Marry The Night’ Video

Born This Way collaborator Fernando Garibay calls the clip a ‘thank you’ to Gaga’s label, Interscope. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa WhiteWolf Lady Gaga Photo: Joe Scarnici/ WireImage Lady Gaga has said the 14-minute “Marry the Night” video is an avant garde look at her early struggles before hitting it big, and frequent musical collaborator Fernando Garibay told MTV News he remembers seeing a lot of that strife that plays out in the clip. “She directed the whole video. It was her concept from beginning to end,” he said. “It was amazing to see. I was brought in to do the music for the video and additional scoring and such, and so I got to sit and watch the whole process. It’s pretty spectacular. It’s still breathtaking how much effort and input she has for concepts. … I might be biased, but it’s my favorite video so far. It looks great, and it captures the feeling of the song. It’s her story.” So what exactly is that story? The video follows a fictionalized Gaga pursuing her dreams as a ballerina. After she’s told to quit, she reinvents herself and becomes a pop sensation. It mirrors her real-life story of being dropped by Island/Def Jam before being signed to Interscope Records, and the rest is history. “It wasn’t easy — that’s like an understatement,” Garibay said of Gaga’s early days in the industry. “It wasn’t easy for her to get started in the music business, and I was there early on when she was already taking extreme risks. And a lot of the stuff, it’s tough to watch, ’cause I’ve seen that happen, some of those parts. And her honoring and paying homage to Interscope — ’cause it’s great, ’cause it’s our label and they were always believers in us, particularly her — so it’s great to see that. It’s like gratitude. It’s like a ‘thank you.’ ” In the lead-up to the video, Garibay said his pop-star pal wasn’t in any way scared to put so much of her life out there for public consumption. “I don’t think she’s nervous at all,” he said. “She’s fearless. There’s nothing to hide with her. She really put a lot of herself out there this time, but it’s something we see all the time. It’s nice for the public to see the story and what happened and the true expression of herself in video. It is very autobiographical. She’s been wanting to tell the story, so she finally got the opportunity. So it’ll be interesting to see what’s gonna happen next with her vision.” What did you think of the “Marry the Night” video? ‘Hugo’: The Reviews Are In!

Most critics praise film’s visuals and performances, although some take issue with its length. By Eric Ditzian Asa Butterfield in “Hugo” Photo: Paramount Pictures We’re big “Hugo” fans here in the MTV Newsroom, as we make clear over at Movies Blog , calling Martin Scorsese’s 3-D film a “love letter to cinema” and “like nothing you’ve ever seen from the Oscar-winning filmmaker before.” We’re not the only ones raving about it. Critics are celebrating the movie’s bold visual style and strong performances. The only issue anyone seems to have with “Hugo” is that there’s just too much of it: The story — following the young orphan Hugo’s (Asa Butterfield) adventures in a 1930s Parisian metro station, his battles with the station inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen) and his friendship with a girl (Chlo

Clint Eastwood Calls ‘J. Edgar’ An Intriguing ‘Portrait’

Dustin Lance Black tells MTV News he wrote the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring drama for ‘this generation’ as a cautionary tale. By Kara Warner Leonardo DiCaprio and Naomi Watts in “J. Edgar” Photo: Warner Bros Long before its release, “J. Edgar” had movie fans excited for its opening on Friday (November 11). Why? Because it features the bona fide box-office draw of star Leonardo DiCaprio, rising star Armie Hammer and a living Hollywood legend in director Clint Eastwood. Not only that, but the film is based on the creation and formation of the FBI, which was founded by J. Edgar Hoover. That subject might not be as intriguing to a young audience as something like “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas,” but the parties closest to the project want you to know that there is more to this story than drama and history. “A portrait of a very important man in American history,” Eastwood told MTV News at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art “Art + Film” Gala when asked what younger audiences should expect from the film. “And [they can] get an idea of him if they don’t know about him. Hopefully, they know something about that and the history that surrounded him because he reigned at a very important era, starting with the Bolshevik invasion from within the [1920s],” he said. Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black added that the idea of making the story relevant to younger generations was front of mind for him throughout the writing process. “I wanted to write it for this generation. There’s a lot you can talk about with J. Edgar Hoover, but I chose the things I thought a young generation could identify with,” Black explained. “We’re not going to focus on McCarthy, we’re going to focus on Martin Luther King. We’re going to focus on things that [Hoover] did that were heinous, that these kids will probably be surprised by and also a lot of the great things he did that we’ve all forgotten about. “There’s some gun-shooting and explosions and all that sort of stuff that I hope young people like,” he continued. “But for the most part, it’s a cautionary tale saying, ‘Hey, young people, here was a man that made his life all about being famous and it turned him into a monster.’ So fame is great, but if you don’t put love first, you might be a problem.” Check out everything we’ve got on ” J. ‘Rum Diary’ A ‘Love Letter To Hunter,’ Johnny Depp Says

Aaron Eckhart and Giovanni Ribisi also talk about writer Hunter S. Thompson’s impact on the film. By Ahsika Sanders, with reporting by Kara Warner Johnny Depp in “The Rum Diary” Photo: FilmDistrict From the first few moments of the trailer’s island music, bright colors and eye-catching castmembers, “The Rum Diary” looks like a whimsical vacation to paradise realized onscreen. Based on the novel by Hunter S. Thompson during the author’s own travels to Puerto Rico in the late ’50s, the film casts “Pirates of the Caribbean” leading man Johnny Depp as the alcoholic, struggling writer-turned-journalist Paul Kemp, who struggles to find a balance between work, play and the island’s increasingly tumultuous politics. When MTV News caught up with the film’s stars, they explained how the film is a fitting tribute to Thompson’s final story, as well as to his legacy. “The whole thing is really a love letter to Hunter,” Depp said, whose friendship with Thompson led to the discovery of the late author’s unpublished manuscript and eventually the idea to make it into a film. “The film from the very inception, opening that cardboard box and finding the manuscript to ‘The Rum Diary’ and saying to Hunter, ‘What’s wrong with you? Why don’t you publish this?’ and him saying, ‘Well we should produce this,’ the chain of events that happened over the years and then us trying ignorantly to drum up the money was just a very funny experience,” Depp said of the story’s journey from page to screen. “Even though my partner is not right next to me, we’re going to still produce this film together, and ultimately we did,” Depp said of deciding to move forward with the production after Thompson’s death in 2005. “Even if his presence, if he wasn’t visible, we still produced the film together.” Aaron Eckhart stars alongside Depp in a second villainous role since his stint as Harvey “Two-Face” Dent in “The Dark Knight.” Depp’s love and passion for Thompson and his work made the film a more meaningful experience, Eckhart said. “I think that Johnny has taken up the mantle and has preserved his legacy and is now offering all those people out there who have never heard of Hunter, an opportunity to be familiar with his work,” he said. “Hunter was always there. He always had his chair, his empty chair on set with us, and Johnny and [director] Bruce [Robinson] had a ritual that they did everyday … but his spirit was always there.” “Avatar” bad guy Giovanni Ribisi added that for him, the story was about “having a voice and maintaining your independence and your individuality” and that Thompson’s perception of that ideal is universal and timely. “I think Hunter S. Thompson was such a strong factor in a time in the sixties, he was almost the fulcrum for that [time], where people were waking up,” he said. “It was about a rebellion against this capitalist structure and the mise en scene in the story. In the book you know where America is coming and really doing its thing to this beautiful culture Puerto Rico, that setting is just incredible. That for me is what it’s about. I think, as much as I hate to say it, I think it’s very apropos to today’s psychology.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Rum Diary.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
