REVIEW: The Art of Getting By Barely Masters the Art of Perfunctory Teen Romance

A friend once told me that his gold standard for new acquaintances involved the Leonard Cohen song “Anthem.” “There is a crack, a crack in everything,” the song goes. “That’s how the light gets in.” He applied it as a kind of authenticity test, because — pace Mr. Cohen — there are people out there who appear to lack the crack, whether it never fully formed or has been willfully spackled shut. There are films that lack it, too, some more ironically than others. Watching The Art of Getting By , the story of a singular teenager told in oppressively uniform terms, I was reminded of my friend’s judgment of a man I was seeing: No crack, no sir.

‘Breaking Dawn’ Is A ‘Fulfilling’ Finale, Jackson Rathbone Says

‘It really wraps up the story in such a beautiful way,’ the ‘Twilight’ star tells MTV News. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Jackson Rathbone Photo: MTV News There’s plenty of “Twilight” goodness to look forward to at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards , but what Jackson Rathbone is most looking forward to is the sneak peek of “Breaking Dawn” that his castmates Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner will present during the big show. Rathbone shared his enthusiasm for the final two “Twilight Saga” films when we caught up with him on the set of his new film “Live at the Foxes Den,” describing the finale as “the culmination of this saga, and it really wraps up the story in such a beautiful way. We had the amazing [director] Bill Condon on, and I was very, very excited to play Jasper once again in these films and kind of step up.” Fans who have read the book know Jasper and his lady Alice (Ashley Greene) have a very significant role in the “Breaking Dawn” plot arc, but Rathbone said he was more excited to show off Jasper’s love and devotion to his family in the next two movies than he was for his beefed-up role. “There’s an amazing moment in ‘Breaking Dawn’ – I can’t say which movie, though. I’m sorry, I’m not technically allowed. But there’s a very fulfilling moment for myself as an actor and as a fan of the books and of the film series that you get to see, in the end, really how much these characters love one another and how much they function as a family, even though they are kind of an odd family of vampires. Vegetarian vampires, at that. They’re an odd bunch,” Rathbone said with a laugh. “But, I mean, the way they love and feel about each other and the way they protect and support one another I think is beautiful, so I think we’re going to get to see that happen in ‘Breaking Dawn.’ ” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? Laura Linney Cast Opposite Bill Murray in Hyde Park on the Hudson

Deadline reports that Laura Linney will play Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s mistress (and cousin) Daisy in Hyde Park On The Hudson , the story of George VI’ s 1939 visit to the Roosevelts in their upstate New York home. Bill Murray is slated to play FDR, and I’m slated to cast Eleanor right now — Kathy Bates, anyone? Not that she wants another mid-century period piece after the creative nadir of Revolutionary Road , of course, but she has command that defies Harry’s Law ! [ Deadline ]

Sextra: He’s Really Into Toe Sucking … and I’m Not!

Bossip what the hell is wrong with my man? I’ve been seeing a man for about a year now and we are a really great match. We have similar goals and aspirations and are working towards building a life together. He never made it a secret that he likes women’s feet and always tells the story of how out of all his brothers he really took care of his mother (she was single) when he was a child. He said he would cook and make a plate for her, rub her back and that she would always fall asleep when he rubbed her feet when she got off work. I’m a nurse and work 12 hour shifts at the hospital and he definitely does make sure to rub my back and feet after a long week at work. A couple months ago he started getting into this thing where he would suck my toes and I was really not feeling it and pulled my feet away when he started to kiss up my ankles. I could tell that he was a little touched by the fact that I didn’t want him sucking on my toes but it’s not my thing and it doesn’t turn me on in form or fashion. Lately as soon as I get home or after we go out he’ll want to suck them after I’ve been in my socks and shoes all day! My feet don’t stink luckily but he says he likes the smell. WHAT??? I’m totally comfortable in my skin and love to turn things up in the bedroom but I can’t get with the foot fetish! I keep my feet pedicured and I’m a very clean person but I can’t kiss him after he’s been munching my toe jam and it makes me wonder who else’s feet he’s been kissing on! Is this something men like to do that I don’t know about or are most folks like me and think it’s gross? Any and all feedback would be most appreciated! Happy Friday, sis! Thank you for writing in and sharing your story! Well, here we are with another example of how different things are arousing to different people! It’s a matter of individual preference when it all boils down to it. However, you are completely entitled to reject his loving gestures toward your toes if it grosses you out and makes you uncomfortable! And, surely, your man wouldn’t want to force his fetish on you if it doesn’t excite you in any way. So, the question is: have you been firm and direct in communicating to him that you don’t like your toes sucked? It is completely understood that you would be apprehensive about kissing the mouth that’s been “munching” on your “toe jam,” as you put it. And it’s further understood that you would be concerned behind his indulging in his foot fetish on the women who came before you! However, assuming that you’ve both been tested for all transmittable diseases and are faithful to each other, you should find comfort in the notion that all acts of love (scents and all) are being shared between the two of you only! But, as with any relationship, you set the boundaries and they should be respected! So, Ma, we asked around and here’s what a few of our readers had to say!

Russell Brand Joins ‘Rock Of Ages’ Movie

‘Arthur’ star will play narrator Lonny in the big-screen adaptation of the rocking Broadway musical. By Jocelyn Vena Russell Brand Photo: Jemal Countess/ Getty Images It seems Russell Brand’s, um, “scheduling” conflicts were cleared up. After the madcap British actor suggested to MTV News in March that he’d be up for a role in the upcoming film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical “Rock of Ages” if salary negotiations went as planned, on Wednesday the movie’s director, Adam Shankman, announced that Brand had been officially cast in the star-filled project. “I can officially announce Russell Brand as your Lonny in #rockofagesmovie!” Shankman wrote on Twitter . “I see a mullet in his future…maybe a Nikki Six?” The part is the latest addition to Brand’s growing r

Woman Who Blamed Acid Attack On A Black Woman Apologizes

Back in September, Bethany Storro- a woman from Washington was “attacked” with acid by an African American woman, or so she claims. It turns out that the story was a hoax, and that Bethany actually splashed acid on her own face, causing severe burns and hospitalization. The truth came out when Bethany was under serious questioning by detectives and police noticed the differences in her story each time she told it. She finally broke down and confessed that she splashed herself with acid and blamed it on an African American woman. Now, Bethany has taken a plea deal for making false statements to the police. She now must log 240 hours of community service and pay $4,000 worth of overtime to the detectives. During sentencing, Bethany apologized to the people of her community, and especially the African American community, for blaming the incident on a black woman without reason. SMH. Lily Collins ‘Grateful’ For ‘Mortal Instruments’ Fan Support

‘If they don’t necessarily see you in the part, that can be an issue,’ actress tells MTV News of book series’ loyal readers. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Lilly Collins at WonderCon 2011 Photo: Getty Images Among the movie-obsessed here at MTV News, there is always a lot of talk about highly anticipated upcoming films. Naturally, the summer blockbusters garner their fair share of enthusiasm, but recently, a lot of talk has turned toward the much-buzzed-about book-to-screen adaptations of young adult novels such as “The Hunger Games” and “The Mortal Instruments.” Speaking to director Scott Stewart’s adaptation of “Mortal Instruments,” MTV News recently caught up with lucky actress Lily Collins, who will portray fan-favorite protagonist Clarissa “Clary” Fray, about what makes the film and book series so special. “It’s an amazing series of books,” Collins gushed to MTV News at WonderCon. “Cassandra Clare’s books are incredible. I’m a huge fan myself, so to be able to play the heroine I love is incredible. It’s a story based on a young woman, an empowered young woman [who is] confident and determined, and she ends up surprising everyone with her abilities,” Collins explained. “I think it’s incredible for the story to be about a young girl and not one that is just a girl in the story. It really is her story.” Collins said she is incredibly excited and grateful to everyone who has offered their support of her landing the role. “To have the support of Scott [Stewart] and Clint Culpepper at Screen Gems and everyone, it means a lot that they saw something in me from ‘Priest,’ ” she said. “The fans have responded really, really positively, which is all you can ask for, because when you cast a heroine of a series of books that people are already fans of, if they don’t necessarily see you in the part, that can be an issue, so I feel very grateful to them.” “Instruments” author Cassandra Clare has also issued her stamp of approval. “I love Lily Collins,” she recently gushed in an online video. ‘Harry Potter’ Epilogue Is About ‘The Cycles Of Life,’ Producer Says

‘It’s about Harry, Ron and Hermione taking their children to King’s Cross station to the very place where the story began,’ David Heyman reveals. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Bonnie Wright and Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” Photo: Warner Bros. The end is coming for “Harry Potter” fans on July 15, but that hasn’t left them feeling any less excited for, well, the end . It’s the question that keeps coming back again and again every time we talk to the “Potter” stars and crew: What details can you share about the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” epilogue? It is known that the principle actors reprise their roles as older versions of themselves in the scene, and despite reshoots , they still look pretty dapper as adults (though Rupert Grint wishes Ron hadn’t gained as much weight as he did). But when MTV News caught up with producers David Barron and David Heyman at CinemaCon on Thursday, we were ready to get them to share the nitty-gritty details, like just how long the scene will actually be. “It’s not long. It’s about two … a couple of minutes,” Barron said. “It’s long enough to tell its story. We like it. We think it works well, and it does leave you feeling a bit [emotional].” Barron went on to say that the epilogue is more than just a look into the future of the main characters of the “Potter” series to show how they all ended up happily ever after. It’s also a brief insight into the way a country recovers after a terrible war. “We’re expressing it through our three principle characters, who obviously have had a terrible time in many respects. Because they have been fighting Voldemort for longer than we can remember, and came close to death, you’ll see the state of the school at the end. It was not an easy battle,” he said. “As countries, as nations do, as cultures do, they recover and they renew and life carries on. It is about renewal.” That sense of renewal and of the films coming full circle will be shown both on and off the screen. Decisions were made to include loved ones and family members of the cast and crew in the epilogue sequence, like allowing Tom Felton’s girlfriend Jade Olivia to play his onscreen wife. “[The epilogue is] about the cycles of life,” Heyman explained. “It’s about Harry, Ron and Hermione taking their children to King’s Cross station to the very place where the story began, to begin the journey that they began many years ago. It’s really beautiful and really tender.” That cycle cannot be seen more clearly than in the casting of Harry and Ginny’s daughter, Lily Luna Potter, in the epilogue sequence. Daniel Radcliffe revealed to MTV last year that the young girl chosen is the daughter of makeup department head Amanda Knight, who just happens to have the red hair and blue eyes that make her a perfect pick. She was born a week before Radcliffe originally got the part of Harry and, at 9 years old, was the “physical embodiment of how long we’ve been here” making the films. So do Heyman and Barron know what the last scene of the “Harry Potter” franchise is? “Yes, but we’re not going to tell you just yet,” Heyman said with a laugh. “It’s the one where Voldemort comes back!” Barron teased. That sounds like the right time to announce a reboot of the series with Radcliffe starring as Dumbledore . ‘Source Code’: The Reviews Are In!

See what critics are saying about the Jake Gyllenhaal-starring sci-fi film. By Eric Ditzian Michelle Monaghan and Jake Gyllenhaal in “Source Code” Photo: Summit Entertainment The beginning of March brought us a well-reviewed sci-fi movie in “The Adjustment Bureau.” The first day of April gifts us with a far superior, and deservedly better reviewed, genre flick called “Source Code.” Here’s the funny thing (and the enduring, head-scratching nature of the box office): The new movie, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, isn’t likely to pull in more bucks over its opening weekend than Matt Damon’s “Bureau” ($21.2 million). That’s a shame, because more people than are expected to buy tickets — experts are predicting around $15 million in receipts — should check out “Source Code,” the second feature from Duncan Jones (“Moon”). But don’t just take it from us. Check out what the critics are saying about the film: The Story “Army Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) awakens on a commuter train heading to Chicago, and doesn’t know where he is. He finds the delightful Christina (Michelle Monaghan) sitting across from him. … Colter doesn’t know — and neither do we — that he’s part of a highly classified military research project and has been sent into the immediate past to find out who bombed that train. The ‘source code’ — a kind of shorthand for computer shorthand — is given a breezy but satisfying enough explanation by its inventor (Jeffrey Wright), but what it does, basically, is provide Colter with an eight-minute window, in a parallel reality, to find the bomber and prevent what is expected to be a subsequent terrorist attack on Chicago itself.” — John Anderson, The Wall Street Journal The Performances “‘Source Code’ clicks along with swift, crisp tension, with Gyllenhaal delivering an assured lead performance as a man at once out of his depth and supremely self-assured. … Indeed, it’s the persuasive turns of all the cast members — within an otherwise preposterous setup — that allow filmgoers to surrender to the propulsive force of ‘Source Code.’ Monaghan and Farmiga are especially winning as the sympathetic women who coax Stevens along a path that, while preordained, he insists on twisting.” — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post The Direction ” ‘Source Code’ is nimbly directed by Duncan Jones, whose 2009 ‘Moon’ was probably the past decade’s smartest, most ambitious science-fiction film. Although ‘Source Code”s premise is a Philip K. Dick-style mindbender, Jones plays the story straight. The movie triggers memories of those classic Hitchcock suspense stories starring Jimmy Stewart or Cary Grant as a bystander abruptly thrust into life-or-death intrigue. Setting the action on a train gives the story a claustrophobic sense of urgency and a nice thematic resonance: Is Stevens’ future also moving with unstoppable momentum on a fixed path?” — Colvin Colbert, Minneapolis Star Tribune The Dissenters “‘Source Code’ can’t help but come down with the conceptual sillies from time to time. The situation is so preposterous and the characters’ attempts to explain it make for such bogus high-tech gobbledygook — Jeffrey Wright does what he can with the stock role of the crippled Dr. Strangelove behind the experiment — that you need a weed whacker just to keep sight of the plot. The movie plays with the metaphysics of time and causality, and it gives Gyllenhaal a big Sisyphean rock to push uphill over and over, but in no way does it enter the cosmically profound through the back door the way ‘Groundhog Day’ did.” — Ty Burr, Boston Globe The Final Word “Superficially, ‘Source Code’ plays with some of the same themes as last month’s ‘The Adjustment Bureau.’ But it’s made with so much more skill and craft and impact that it’s as if that other film were its made-for-TV doppelganger. This is hair-raising, clever and winning entertainment. Even if his protagonists aren’t entirely what they seem to be or think they are, Mr. Jones is, it’s increasingly clear, the real thing.” — Shawn Levy, The Oregonian Check out everything we’ve got on “Source Code.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
