Nelly And Kelly Rowland ‘Extend The Story’ Of ‘Dilemma’ With ‘Gone’

‘Our chemistry has already proven to be good,’ rapper tells MTV News. By Jayson Rodriguez Kelly Rowland and Nelly Photo: Getty Images The last time Nelly and Kelly Rowland collaborated, they scored a pop smash with their 2002 hit “Dilemma,” which was named one of the most popular songs of the decade by Billboard. Now, eight years later, the duo are reuniting to give it another go, but to hear Nelly explain it, the forthcoming track “Gone” isn’t a sequel to “Dilemma.” Rather, the song, from Nelly’s upcoming release 5.0, is an “update.” “I don’t want to say it’s a sequel. I don’t want to diminish anything with ‘Dilemma’ or have an expectation you can’t live up to when you do that,” Nelly told MTV News. “When you do that type of thing, there’s people who are already, ‘I don’t wanna hear it. It’s supposed to be “Dilemma.” ‘ You already being negative [before] pushing the button! “It’s one of those things were we did reconnect,” he continued. “Our chemistry has already proven to be good, whether it was onstage or in the studio. It was something that we wanted to reconnect with. It was produced by Jim Jonsin. … It’s a cool joint. I think people will get it. It can never be ‘Dilemma,’ but we wanted to extend the story. It’s continuing the story a little bit more, seeing her again.” Before “Gone” hits the airwaves, however, Nelly is riding high off the success of “Just a Dream” cracking the top 10 on the Hot 100 chart. The record, also produced by Jonsin, is Nelly’s return to the charts in the wake of his commercially disappointing last album, 2008’s Brass Knuckles. He credited his fans with the song’s success. “It’s always great when your fans come out and support [you] anytime in your career,” he said about the achievement. “But definitely after 10 years, and when you haven’t been quite on the scene as much as your fans would like you to, but when they do get a glimpse of you and they feel good, it also makes you feel good.” Are you excited to hear Nelly and Kelly’s new track? Stewart, Colbert Announce Dueling Marches On Washington. ‘Rally To Restore Sanity’ vs. ‘March To Keep Fear Alive’

Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert will march together on Washington. Or against each other in Washington. Either way, expect plenty of Comedy Central fans to show up on October 30 when Stewart's “Rally To Restore Sanity” will meet Colbert's “March To Keep Fear Alive” in the nation's capital. The duo have been hinting at a major announcement for several episodes in a mock response to Glenn Beck's own “Restoring Honor” rally that was held this year on the anniversary of a famous Martin Luther King speech at the same monument. There's no indication that the announced get-together is a joke, though. Both comedians are telling their audiences to book hotel rooms now (though for different reasons, as you'll see). “It'll be like being in a chat room,” Stewart explained. “But real.” Stewart punctuated his announcement on the earlier program with a homemade-looking banner reading, “Take It Down A Notch For America.” Colbert followed up with an announcement on his own show, and insisted that he would “notch it up a scotch.” Story continues below Advertisement Each man ventured into the other's studios for moments you'll just have to see for yourself … http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/17/stewart-colbert-rally-to-restore-sanity… added by: atomiclegion

Did the burn patterns of the acid reflect Bethany Storro’s account of a stranger tossing it in her face?

Police Say Wash. Acid Attack Self-Inflicted Bethany Storro Admitted Story Was Fake, Vancouver Police Say Posted: 7:23 pm EDT September 16, 2010Updated: 7:11 am EDT September 17, 2010 VANCOUVER, Wash. — When the initial shock faded, police in this suburb of Portland, Ore., began to question some details in Bethany Storro's account of the day her face was irreparably burned by acid. Why, they asked, did the burn patterns of the acid not reflect Storro's account of a stranger tossing it in her face? Why was she wearing sunglasses – something she said she never did – just after 7 p.m. on Aug. 30? And why did no one see the alleged assailant? Those questions culminated in a search warrant served at Storro's house on Thursday, when she admitted that she fabricated the story of a stranger's attack. Instead, she said, she did it to herself. The attack drew worldwide sympathy. Facebook groups were formed to draw attention to her plight. A fundraiser was planned in Vancouver, and donation sites were established at branches of two local banks. So it was in a soft-spoken voice that Vancouver police chief Clifford Cook told reporters on Thursday that Storro invented the story. “During the course of the investigation, several discrepancies began to emerge regarding the alleged attack,” Cook said. “During the interview, Ms. Storro admitted the injuries were self-inflicted.” Cook said he did not know a motive for Storro's actions, but added she is “very remorseful.” He said Storro was still being interviewed by detectives during a press conference on Thursday. Police had been seeking a black woman with a ponytail after Storro described the alleged attack. She had said the woman asked her, “Hey, pretty girl, want something to drink?” then threw acid in her face. After the incident, Storro made several media appearances, but a planned interview on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” was canceled. She said she had received correspondence from people around the world concerned for her well being. She recounted details of the alleged attack at a news conference, with her head wrapped in bandages and her parents by her side. She said she wanted to know why the unnamed assailant had attacked her. Funds were set up for Storro at Umpquah and Riverview Community banks. Messages to the banks were not immediately returned Thursday. Vancouver police Commander Marla Schuman said detectives were working on a way to return any money donated to Storro. Cook said any decision to charge Storro with a crime would be left to the Clark County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. Clark County Senior Deputy Prosecutor John Fairgrieve did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment Thursday. “She is extremely upset,” Schuman said. “In many ways, this got bigger than she expected.” Schuman was asked whether Storro will face a charge of filing a false police report, to which she responded: “At this point, yes, that would certainly fit.” A burn surgeon who operated on Storro said the substance thrown on her face was an acid as strong as hydrochloric or sulfuric acid. Police said Thursday that they haven't yet identified the substance Storro used, nor did they find any evidence of acid in her home or car. http://www.wsbtv.com/nationalnews/25043587/detail.html added by: MotherForTruth

Pope Benedict XVI goes to war with ‘atheist extremism’

Benedict XVI used the first papal state visit to Britain today to launch a blistering attack on “atheist extremism” and “aggressive secularism”, and to rue the damage that “the exclusion of God, religion and virtue from public life” had done in the last century. The leader of the Roman Catholic church concluded a speech, made before the Queen and assembled dignitaries at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, with the argument that the Nazi desire to eradicate God had led to the Holocaust and a plea for 21st century Britain to respect its Christian foundations. “Today, the United Kingdom strives to be a modern and multicultural society,” he said. “In this challenging enterprise, may it always maintain its respect for those traditional values and cultural expressions that more aggressive forms of secularism no longer value or even tolerate. Let it not obscure the Christian foundation that underpins its freedoms; and may that patrimony, which has always served the nation well, constantly inform the example your government and people set before the two billion members of the Commonwealth and the great family of English-speaking nations throughout the world.” The pontiff's speech set the wide-ranging tone for his four-day visit: despite attacking atheism, he paid tribute to the UK's historic achievements and offered “a hand of friendship” to all its people. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/sep/16/pope-benedict-xvi-atheist-extremism added by: versasrev

Acid Attack Victim in Vancouver WA Admits She Did it to Herself!

VANCOUVER, Wash — A woman who claimed she was the victim of an acid attack has admitted her injuries were self-inflicted, Vancouver, Wash., police said Thursday afternoon. Police Chief Clifford Cook said at an afternoon news conference that Bethany Storro, 28, told detectives the truth during an interview after discrepancies emerged in her story. Her interview was conducted after a search of her home, which she shares with her parents, police said. Interviews with her family are continuing, they said. Police will turn over their findings to prosecutors who will decide if charges will be filed against Storro, 28. They said they were not ready to discuss Storro's motivations. Storro is remorseful and in a “fragile mental state,” police said. Splash patterns and other parts of the story, like wearing sunglasses at night, led to the unraveling of Storro's story, Cook said. “All things that didn't add up to the circumstance,” Cook said. The revelation followed the cancellation of Storro's scheduled Thursday appearance on “Oprah.” Storro originally claimed a black woman with a ponytail threw acid in her face at night on Aug. 30 as she was celebrating a new job and had just bought a pair of sunglasses. Police said it was important to get the word of Storro's confession out immediately to assure the public knew that the Esther Park area of downtown Vancouver, scene of the alleged attack, was safe. WaPo Buries Story with Obvious Palin Point: Tuesday Results Show Emerging Year of the GOP Woman

While most media outlets obsessed over the liberal theme that Republicans keep “suicidally” nominating “ultra-conservatives,” Washington Post reporter Anne Kornblut, who authored a book earlier this year called Notes from the Cracked Ceiling, noticed a different trend. Her story was headlined “GOP gains the lead in female politicians’ steps forward.” Tuesday’s victories of Palin-endorsed GOP women Christine O’Donnell and Kelly Ayotte underline an emerging Year of the Republican Woman. Too bad the Post buried it on Page A-6 of the paper, and it hasn’t been linked on the Post’s homepage today, either. Kornblut began: Democrats used to own the field of women running for higher office. Not anymore. Nearly two years after an anticipated gender bounce – with predictions that women in both parties would rush into politics inspired by Hillary Rodham Clinton and Sarah Palin — it turns out that the momentum is on the Republican side. If there is a Palin effect, it is not being matched by any Clinton effect at the other end of the ideological spectrum. Since this is the liberal Washington Post, Kornblut then turned to a cast of liberals and Democrats to assess whether this can be verified:  Democratic pollster Celinda Lake said it is “very fair” to argue that the energy for female candidates is trending Republican, a view several other Democratic strategists shared. “I’ve been struck by it,” said Dee Dee Myers, a former White House press secretary and author of “Why Women Should Rule the World.” “All the momentum is on the tea party side, so why wouldn’t it also be with the women on the tea party side?” Other Democrats dispute the notion of a conservative “year of the woman,” saying that the numerical advantage is slight, if it exists at all. They also note that some of the Republican nominees, including Christine O’Donnell of Delaware, are seen as fringe candidates unlikely to win their general elections. Stephanie Schriock, the head of Emily’s List, which is dedicated to electing [ahem, Democrat] pro-choice women, said the “candidates that are making it through these primaries are more and more extreme, radical right-wing folks” who, even though they are female, do not appeal to independent and moderate women. A Republican expert wasn’t quoted until the story’s final paragraph, although Kornblut credited Palin: Palin has unquestionably played an outsize role in upping the Republican numbers, endorsing several women, including Haley and O’Donnell, who might never have gained sufficient attention otherwise. She has brought to the Republican Party what some members had once complained did not exist: a concerted effort to tap female candidates for promotion and lift them out of obscurity. And then there is this: The woman most capable of counteracting a Palin bounce for Democrats – Secretary of State Clinton- is not available to campaign. Add to that a general sense of malaise among Democrats, a volatile electorate angry at the status quo and a growing acceptance of female politicians in both parties, and the trend is hardly a surprise, strategists said. “Who better to say, ‘I’m not part of the establishment’ than a Republican woman?” said Republican pollster Kellyanne Conway. “If you want to convey you are not of the firmament of Washington, D.C., and ergo of all the problems and out-of-control spending and corruption, you have to say, ‘I’m a Republican woman,’ because so few of them have ever been involved at that level.” You can see why the rest of the Post would want to bury this story. But the rest of the media ought to acknowledge it. They can’t say it’s not The Year of the Republican Woman because they’ll probably lose: several primary winners (the “Year of the Woman” when liberals ascended with an “Anita Hill effect”) lost in November.

‘Spider-Man’ Star Andrew Garfield Bares His Soul In ‘Never Let Me Go’

Before his high-profile roles in ‘Social Network’ and ‘Spider-Man,’ Garfield stars in ‘a very human story.’ By Rick Marshall Andrew Garfield Photo: MTV News In “Never Let Me Go,” director Mark Romanek’s adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s award-winning novel, Andrew Garfield plays a character whose emotions are never far from the surface, faced with the frustrating certainty of his impending death. While the basic premise for the film is set firmly in the realm of science-fiction, the narrative itself shares little in common with the average futuristic story filled with robots and advanced technology. Instead, “Never Let Me Go” offers an intimate look at three people whose lives have a very public expiration date and what they do with the time they’re given. “What is at the core of the story is a very human story, discussing what it is to have a soul, and how you prove what a soul is,” Garfield told MTV News. “Do we have souls? It’s actually [a story] about being human.” For Garfield, the film is likely to be the calm before the storm, of sorts. The actor will appear next in David Fincher’s “The Social Network” before swinging into theaters as the new star of the “Spider-Man” movie franchise in the 2012 blockbuster. Whether any of his upcoming roles will afford him the same emotional journey as “Never Let Me Go” is uncertain, but Garfield seems keen on getting the most out of his roles — like the chance to let loose with the occasional raw, primal scream. “It was intense to do,” said Garfield of the scenes in which his character, no longer able to contain his anger and frustration, erupts with a heart-wrenching wail. “I think those screams are inside all of us, I just got a chance to let mine out,” he said. “At one point during every single day, you want to do that, but you don’t express that — you keep everything locked in. And that’s OK, that’s what it is to grow and not be a baby anymore. But when you’re first born, you don’t know why you shouldn’t scream. To react in that very childish, free, expressive, instinctive way of being was kind of beautiful to do. “I think it’s kind of important that we find a room where we can do that once a week, once an hour,” he laughed. “I think that’s kind of necessary.” With “Never Let Me Go” kicking off a limited release in theaters this week, audiences have the chance to see Garfield flex his acting muscles well ahead of his mainstream gigs, but the actor seems intent on keeping perspective, describing his debut as Peter Parker as “just another role.” However, he admits that his experience during last weekend’s MTV Video Music Awards offered him a chance to observe what happens once you’re firmly rooted in the spotlight. “It was surreal, man,” he said. “It was surreal to be there, and it was surreal to be with Justin [Timberlake] in his element, so to speak. It was really exciting. I felt like I could be a fly on the wall, because no one knows who the hell I am. I could just be there and observe all this weirdness going on all around.” In the end, it might be a good thing that Garfield has “Never Let Me Go” behind him before Hollywood makes his life even more surreal, as the lessons he learned from the experience bode well for avoiding potential “weirdness.” “[The story of ‘Never Let Me Go’] is reminding us hopefully that we do have a choice to we wake up in the morning and think, ‘What do I want to do?’ Not ‘What should I do?’ and ‘What am I obliged to do?’ but ‘What do I want to do with this very unique day?’ “I think it can be a call to arms for that kind of excitement about life,” he said. “And I love the story for that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Never Let Me Go.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Chris Pine Surprised By George Clooney Movie Reports

Landing the role in ‘Farragut North’ adaptation would be Pine’s ‘dream come true.’ By Kara Warner Chris Pine Photo: Sergio Dionisio/Getty Images With all the high-speed Internet connections and mobile devices out there, we receive breaking news at blistering speeds these days. And in movie news, one rumor can spark a million stories. Case in point: when New York magazine Vulture blog reported that George Clooney was planning to follow through with his plans to adapt the play “Farragut North” into a feature film, with Chris Pine attached to star. But we here at MTV News like to take every possible opportunity to clarify or confirm rumors. And when the very pleasant Pine called to chat about his upcoming thriller “Unstoppable” a few days after the Clooney news surfaced, we had to ask his thoughts about it. “I have, I mean, I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said with some hesitation. So, we told him the short version of the story. “Wow!” he responded, sounding genuinely shocked. “Um, that would be that would be another dream come true,” he said, having mentioned earlier that working with Denzel Washington and Ridley Scott on “Unstoppable” was just that. “Farragut North,” written by former Democratic political operative Beau Willimon, revolves around the shady tactics a young presidential campaign wunderkind named Stephen Myers uses to get his candidate the nomination against a rival senator. “I love that part, I love the story,” said Pine, who received rave reviews in the lead role of “Farragut” on stage last year. “I think it’s a wonderful, wonderful story about a really intelligent young guy who’s kind of hyper articulate, and spinning a bunch of plates at once that’s obviously hiding a lot of trauma and a lot of insecurity and a lot of hurt. And to work with George Clooney, that would be pretty f—ing awesome.” We then mentioned the report that Clooney is eyeing Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti as Pine’s potential co-stars. His reaction? He laughed out loud in disbelief. “Jesus Christ! Well, you can’t get better than that,” he said. “I hope it works out. That would be a lot of fun.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
