Selena Gomez is facing a new death threat, sources confirm, and this one is a lot more serious than any Twitter messages left by Justin Bieber fans . According to TMZ, LAPD’s Threat Management Unit has responded to a restraining order obtained by Gomez against a 46-year old crazy person named Thomas Brodnicki. Brodnicki was reportedly picked up for mental evaluation last month after threatening to “scratch people’s eyes out on the street.” During sessions with a psychologist, he allegedly said he traveled to Los Angeles to meet Selena; visited her place of work on three occasions; and talked with God about murdering the singer. Court documents reveal that Gomez is living in “extreme fear” of this taunt and that detectives are taking it seriously. Brodnicki has a history of mental illness and of issuing criminal threats. Really?? After all of that “freedom of religion gives us the right to be here,” the people who were so determined to open a mosque up the street from World Trade Center haven’t been paying their rent. Or at least that’s what their landlord would like us to believe. Lower Manhattan’s controversial Park51 Islamic center is now in a court battle with utility Consolidated Edison, which says the center owes it $1.7 million in a dispute over back rent. In court papers, Park51 says it owes Con Edison only $881,000 and calls the utility’s demand “grossly inflated.” The center has filed suit against the company over a default notice it was issued in September, and a New York state judge has stayed any action until after a hearing in November. In a statement to CNN on Sunday, Con Edison said it “remains hopeful” that it can work out an agreement with Park51, which leases part of its property from the utility. Park51′s developers did not return a phone call seeking comment. The center, which includes a mosque, drew intense opposition in 2010 from politicians, conservative activists and some families of the victims of the al Qaeda attack on the World Trade Center. The twin towers stood about two blocks from the site before they were destroyed by the suicide hijackings on September 11, 2001, leading critics to dub the project the “Ground Zero Mosque.” The interfaith center’s leaders said the project will be a 16-story community center with recreational, educational and cultural programming rooted in a spirit of cooperation and coexistence. City officials refused to block its construction, and Park51 held its grand opening in September. According to court documents, Park51 has exercised an option to purchase the Con Edison portion of the site for $10.7 million. The center says it has been paying $2,750 a month — minuscule by New York standards — under its initial lease. The rent was to be recalculated based on the market value of the property after it renewed the lease in 2008, but disputes over the appraisal lasted until this August. In September, Con Edison demanded the $1.7 million it said it was owed. “The lease for the property calls for the tenant to pay this money now that an appraisal process has been completed,” the utility told CNN. “Under the terms of the lease, Con Edison requested payment of outstanding rent, but to date, tenant has not yet made the required payment.” The people behind the Islamic Center think this is just a new tactic to get them out of the building. We can’t help but feel like they might not be way off… Source
Mother Monster serenades president on his 65th; Usher and U2’s Bono also perform. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga (file) Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage Even with a galaxy of big stars on hand to honor former President Bill Clinton on his 65th birthday, it was, of course, Lady Gaga who made the big headlines Saturday night at the four-hour Clinton charity fundraiser , “A Decade of Difference.” Emerging on the stage from an all-white tree house, Gaga sang a sedate, unplugged version of “Born This Way” on keyboards, while wearing a giant cloth hat and flesh-colored cape over a similarly colored top and leggings. The backing track soon pumped up and a group of dancers came out as Gaga made her way down to the main stage and sang the line, “Don’t be a drag, just be a queen,” while the former president and his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, clapped and smiled along. Wearing a blond wig, Gaga paid homage to Marilyn Monroe by changing some of the lyrics to “Bad Romance” to “Bill romance,” prompting the president to later declare, “I thought, ‘My God, I get Lady Gaga, and I will have a heart attack celebrating my 65th birthday.’ ” “Well, I’m having my first real Marilyn moment,” Gaga joked after the opening, running her fingers through her mane. “I always wanted to have one, and I was hoping that it didn’t involve an accident with some pills and a strand of pearls, so here we are.” Gaga’s set also included a run through “Edge of Glory,” during which she said, “I wish you were playing sax with me tonight, baby,” an homage to late E Street horn man Clarence Clemons , who played on the song, but a quip that Clinton could have also taken as a nod to himself, as he’s also known for blowing a mean sax. The show took place at the Hollywood Bowl to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Clinton Foundation and, though his birthday was on August 19, Clinton was still feeling very thankful for all the fuss. “I am the only person in history who got to be President and then had a post-presidential birthday party attended by both Lady Gaga and the Secretary of State,” Clinton said to the crowd, which included such stars as Colin Farrell and Chevy Chase. “I want to thank Hillary because we met 40 years ago this year. When I met her, she was already doing the kind of work you see here long before it was cool.” Also on hand to fete the former president was Stevie Wonder, who performed “Superstition,” “Sir Duke” and “For Once in My Life” and U2 ‘s Bono and the Edge (accompanied by a laptop), who did acoustic versions of “Desire,” “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” “One,” “Staring at the Sun” and “Miss Sarajevo.” The pair also unveiled the first-ever live version of “A Man and a Woman” from 2004’s How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, dedicating it to Chelsea Clinton and her husband, Marc Mezvinsky. The U2 singer praised the former president for his work in helping to broker peace in Ireland, saying that “at the top of the list” for playing the gig was the fact that his homeland is “truly at peace, north and south, because of the 42nd president of the United States of America,” who he dubbed the “most beloved president since JFK for us Irish.” Usher made news because he danced so hard that he split his pants during a mini-set that included a cover of the Joe Cocker take on the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends,” as well as his own “Yeah!” and “OMG.” Also performing were Columbian pop star Juanes, country singer Kenny Chesney, Grace Potter and K’Naan. Among the celebrities on hand to make introductions were Ashton Kutcher, Ellen DeGeneres, Jason Segel and Maria Bello. Related Photos The Evolution Of: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga
‘Chandler, I think, was super-excited’ about his fate, Robert Kirkman says of episode’s stunning cliffhanger. By Josh Wigler Robert Kirkman Photo: MTV News One week after “Breaking Bad” delivered its jaw-exploding season finale, AMC has delivered once again in the form of “The Walking Dead.” The post-zombie apocalypse series crawled back onto television Sunday night, and it ended with one hell of a gut shot — literally. In last night’s second-season premiere, Southern lawmen Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Shane Walsh (Jon Bernthal) spent much of the episode dodging zombies and trudging through the woods in search of a missing companion. Joined by Rick’s son Carl (Chandler Riggs), the trio’s journey took a turn for the eerie when they stumbled upon a deer in the forest … a deer that was shot in cold blood seconds later, the victim of an unseen shooter. That deer wasn’t the only party injured, either: That very same bullet found its final destination in poor little Carl’s abdomen. Shot in the stomach in the middle of nowhere with nothing but two men and who knows how many hidden zombies for company, Carl’s chances for survival are looking pretty slim. Regardless of whether or not he makes it, shooting a child in the belly certainly qualifies as crossing a line, but don’t fear for actor Chandler Riggs — according to “Walking Dead” comic book creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman, Chandler was very much onboard with the scene. “Chandler, I think, was super-excited,” Kirkman told MTV News about the young actor’s reaction to hearing about his character’s fate. “He was like, ‘I’m going to get shot? This is great!’ Chandler is really into that stuff.” Kirkman, who was on set during the shoot, described the process of filming Carl’s accident. “I got to witness what they were calling ‘Chandler Chucking,’ where they would basically pick him up by his pants and his jacket and then swing him onto a mat that was covered in leaves … he was totally into it.” “Anytime you shoot a child onscreen, you have to make sure the kid is OK with it,” he joked. “I think most of that was digital effects.” Beyond building a controversial, water-cooler moment out of shooting a child, Kirkman said that the scene represents another interesting aspect of adapting “Walking Dead” from comics to television. “I think that’s the magic of the TV show, personified in that scene,” he said. “That [scene] is something that happens in the [early phase of the] comic book series, and it’s a shocking thing. You’re not expecting that kid to get shot. People who have read the comic know that it happens, but the way we got to that scene in the TV show was done in a way that even if you’re completely, 100 percent familiar with the comic book, you’re not watching that going, ‘I bet he’s about to get shot. This is the part where he gets shot.’ ” “It shocks even me,” he continued. “I’ve seen that episode probably — I’m not going to exaggerate — 400 times already. I’m always sitting there watching it going, ‘OK, he smiles, and then the deer moves its ears, and then that gunshot’s coming, and then — oh God, no! It came!’ I can never really pinpoint when that gunshot is coming. It always really startles me. I think it’s a cool scene.” What do you think will happen to Carl? ‘We were all just so starstruck,’ she tells MTV News of performing with the rapper in Atlanta earlier this month. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: MTV News Over the course of her arena-filling Speak Now tour , Taylor Swift has been performing with some of her favorite artists. Many of the pair-ups have been with artists you might expect — Usher, Justin Bieber , Hayley Williams — but some are more likely to have you scratching your head. A swaggered-out Swift has been displaying her street cred by chilling with rappers like Nicki Minaj, T.I. and B.o.B during several of her tour stops. But it’s not all that bizarre considering Swift is a big fan of the genre. “I’m a huge hip-hop fan, and it’s been so amazing to have so many incredible artists come out and to get to sing the hooks on their songs that I’ve been blasting in my car for the last couple years,” she told MTV News at the launch event for her Wonderstruck perfume . “It’s been awesome. I couldn’t have asked for more amazing special guests on this tour, and we’re not finished yet.” When asked who she was most surprised by, she shared that it was T.I. The rapper joined Swift onstage in October, just days after finishing his 11-month prison sentence , to perform “Live Your Life.” “Well, I called T.I. the night before the show, so I felt like it’s such short notice that [he wouldn’t do it with me], and he’s just like, ‘Hey, yeah, sure,’ ” she recalled. “And it was just amazing. I was so excited ’cause I’m such a fan and I thought, ‘This is such short notice, this is so ridiculous’ that I’m asking him to do this the night before. And he’s like, ‘I’ll be there,’ ” she continued. “And he showed up for sound check and we were all just so star-struck.” The headline-making Atlanta appearance marked the beginning of T.I.’s return to public life. He’s currently releasing music (including his new single, “I’m Flexin’ ” ), working on a clothing line, Akoo and is planning to take over pop with an in-the-works remix of Ke$ha’s “Sleazy.” Swift’s Speak Now world tour continues through March 2012, with a break around the holidays in November and December.
