Lawsuits: Parents Sue Over Bullied Teen Who Committed Suicide After Video Of Him Pleasuring Himself Went Viral

Parents Sue After Bullied Teen Commits Suicide via Jezebel The parents of a teenage boy who committed suicide after being targeted by bullies filed a lawsuit against district where he attended school, alleging officials knew their son was being targeted but did nothing to protect him. Matthew Burdette’s parents are suing the San Diego Unified School District after a video of the teen masturbating went viral, leading to severe bullying that caused their son to take his life. The Burdettes allege school officials at University City High School where Matthew,14, attended knew about the video and the bullying yet did nothing to intervene. Matthew killed himself during the Thanksgiving holiday in 2013. He left behind a suicide note for his family that shed light on the harassment he was enduring from classmates. “He said, I can’t do school anymore,” Matthew’s aunt Laura Burdette Mechak said to ABC 10. “I have no friends. I don’t want to kill myself but I have no friends.” After his death, family members turned to University City High School looking for answers. What could have happened at school to drive their son, a Boy Scout and member of the wrestling team, to kill himself? Mechak said school officials refused to give them any insight into what was going on with Matthew. “Kids came forward to help them figure out what was going on,” she told ABC 10. It was then that the family first became aware of the video. After months of investigating, this is what the family knows so far. On Nov. 15, Matthew was kicked out of a classroom for eating sunflower seeds. His teacher gave him no direction on where to go or what to do (she didn’t send him to the principal’s office; she just told him to leave the class). That’s when he went to the bathroom and reportedly began to masturbate in one of stalls. At that point, another student entered the bathroom and peered over the door. He used his phone to record Matthew masturbating. Video taping someone engaging in a sexual act without their consent is disturbing and completely horrifying on its own, but don’t forget this is the age where everything gets shared on the Internet. Sure enough, the student immediately shared the footage via Snapchat and other social media sites. That’s where Matthew’s nightmare began. I don’t think we have to explain that high school students and sexually explicit material are a bad combination which only seem to lead to brutal torment from teenagers. As you can imagine, Matthew was relentlessly teased about the video. Mechak detailed the extent of the teasing, which went way past a few schoolyard bullies. “It went viral. It went beyond his school,” she said. “It went to other schools in California. Kids in the neighborhood who didn’t go to Matthew’s school had heard about it and seen the video that was taken of him. After two weeks of the bullying, Matthew reached his breaking point. His body was found on Nov. 29.

Irina Shayk Goes Topless for #BringBackOurGirls Campaign, Stirs Controversy

It’s typically hard to find fault with a photo of  Irina Shayk topless . The same can be said for supporting the safe rescue of countless kidnapped children. But put those two things together and, well… there’s a bit of understandable controversy. The model has joined the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, an online movement meant to raise awareness over the hundreds of Nigerian schoolgirls who were abducted by a terrorist group last month. It’s a movement celebrities such as Michelle Obama are also a part of – but Shayk is the only person so far to pose topless on its behalf. Many Instagram users have slammed Shayk’s decision to go half naked in this context, referring to her as “tasteless” and “ignorant” given the subject matter. “This is extremely ignorant and dumb,” reads one comment. “Holding this hash tag in front of your boobs as if it was some kind of Miss America badge. Seriously? THIS.IS.NOT.ABOUT.YOU.” Others, however, have praised Shayk for bringing any kind of attention to this tragic situation. Where do you stand? Irina Shayk posing topless as part of the #BringBackOurGirls is…   Hot! Inappropriate! Both! View Poll » Ann Coulter, meanwhile, came under her own fire recently for mocking this effort with a #BringBackOurCountry sign. Barb Williams, Ohio Kindergarten Teacher, Slams Student Against Wall in SHOCKING Video

A shocking video of Ohio kindergarten teacher Barb Williams picking a student up by his shirt and slamming him against a wall has gone viral this week. Not surprisingly, it has enraged many parents – particularly Autumn and Anthony Nelson, whose 6-year-old son Ian is seen in the clip with Williams … Teacher Slams Student Against Wall This video is almost hard to stomach as it begins with Ian walking to the bathroom alone. When he leaves the bathroom, Williams is waiting for him in the hall. There is no sound, but she is PISSED, picking him up by his shirt and slamming him against the wall not once, but twice with no hero cat – or other adult – in sight. All kidding aside, it gets even worse. One moment also shows her grabbing the boy by the face and tilting his head back in a borderline scary scene. Parents Autumn and Anthony Nelson of Wharton, Oh., actually received a letter from Eric Hoffman, the superintendent of the Riverdale School system. The letter alerted them of the incident that occurred between their son and his teacher, claiming that she was being disciplined with a 10-day unpaid suspension. The following day they were provided with the video. They were floored. “He was in the other room, and I watched it out in the kitchen and I just started crying. I burst out into tears,” Autumn told their local FOX affiliate. “He’s scared of her, even going to the school next year, even the year after he’ll still have to see her if she’s in the building. That’s probably going to scare him.” Now, and not surprisingly, Ian’s parents are demanding Williams’ firing. “We thought it was a little incident … that’s what the school made it sound like . All of a sudden, we get this video today and this is just outrageous,” Anthony said. Time will tell if she remains employed, but it’s clear what they feel is a lax punishment isn’t going to sit well with the student, his parents or the public. Do you think Williams should get fired? Is there any conceivable reason she shouldn’t?! We’re talking about a six-year-old, not Solange-Jay Z here. People Ain’t Isht: Pill Popping California Teacher Caught Stealing Meds From Elementary Special Ed Students

People stoop so low to get high… California Elementary Teacher Arrested For Stealing Medication From Students A California charter school teacher was caught red-handed stealing medication from the Special Education kid’s supply early this week. Via DailyMail : A California elementary school teacher is being charged with burglary and possession of a controlled substance after authorities allegedly saw surveillance footage that shows her stealing medication from special needs children. Sheri Haselhuhn, a 40-year-old mother and wife with 14 years of teaching experience, is also allegedly seen in the footage swallowing the medication. Police were first alerted by officials at Delta Charter school in Clarksburg on Tuesday after one of the student’s medication came up short. Somehow, the teacher didn’t realize that the medicine supply closet was under surveillance to catch med-thieves just like her… ‘A deputy responded and reviewed the footage, dated April 28, 2014. It showed Haselhuhn removing the medication and ingesting it.’ Haselhuhn was arrested in her West Sacramento home on Wednesday. The medication has not been identified. Nor have authorities revealed whether the student whose medication she stole was a current pupil of Haselhuhn’s. Meanwhile, parents of her current and former students expressed their shock and disbelief as news spread of her arrest. ‘She taught my son how to read,’ Linda McCapes, whose son was taught by Sheri Haselhuhn, told CBS Sacramento. ‘She was nice.’ Clearly we’ve seen teachers do worse , but still. She’s supposed to be someone these kids can trust. But after all her years of experience, she somehow didn’t think anyone would realize the medicine was running out too fast OR know that she was being taped? Sounds like she’s the one in need of special education! Photo: DeltaCharter.org

Fair Or Too Far? Parents Outraged At School Publicly Shaming Failing Students By Posting Skills Test Scores In The Hallway

Parents Upset Over School Publicly Posting Failing Students’ Test Scores via The Black Home School According to some of the students and parents of children who are attending schools in the Spring Independent School District, Harris County, Texas, the officials of the schools are trying to embarrass students. The students who get embarrassed are the ones who don’t obtain passing grades. The schools humiliate the students by letting everyone know of their failure, reports My Fox Houston. Reportedly the DeKaney High School, which is part of the Spring ISD, based in the Gordon M. Anderson Leadership Center, put up a full list of students who failed this year’s test in the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). According to one of the mothers of a student at DeKaney, the school district has no right to publicly embarrass students in this fashion, because they should know what kind of emotional stress that would put on the failing students. The mother, who did not want to be named for fear of causing further embarrassment to her daughter, because she is on the failure list, continued that the school showed a marked lack of respect to place the list in such a prominent place, right near the school’s auditorium. The distraught mother continued “it actually outrages me…that even if it was a lapse in judgment on a person who found it necessary to post this that no one else came forward and identified how harmful this could be to those students.” She added that a more respectful way to let students know where to go to retake the exam, if they failed, would have been to use their student ID, instead of their full names. However, Spring ISD, do not believe that they have done anything wrong in posting the results of the TAKS test for all to see and were only following standard procedures to inform students when and where to retake the test. In a statement, Spring ISD said that they followed standard protocol when posting the results of the test and it was never their intention to cause embarrassment or shame. It continued that Spring ISD had not violated the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act by posting the results in a prominent place. However, Gabrielle Culling, a student at DeKaney, said that she believed that posting results of their failure in this manner, would make those students feel rather embarrassed to face up to their friends and make them think that they were not as smart as those who successfully passed the TAKS.
