Johnny Depp Explains Bumpy Ride Of ‘Lone Ranger’

‘We knew that the budget was going to be huge initially,’ he tells MTV News of back-and-forth budget talks. By Kara Warner Johnny Depp Photo: WireImage Much like the unforgivable and unpredictable nature of the American Old West, the plight of Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski’s big-screen adaptation of “The Lone Ranger” has been quite a bumpy ride. The film got the green light earlier this year, with Depp settled into the role of Tonto and Armie Hammer selected to play the Ranger . Then in August, Disney put a halt on the production with claims that the budget was too big. Just this week, negotiations ended on a happy note, with the production back in full swing and a tentative start date scheduled for early next year. MTV News caught up with Depp as he promoted “The Rum Diary” to find out why “Ranger” is so important to him and why the budget became such a big issue for the studio bigwigs. “I like the character. I think I have interesting plans for the character, and I think the film itself could be entertaining and very funny,” he said. “But also I like the idea of having the opportunity to make fun of the idea of the Indian as a sidekick — which has always been [the case] throughout the history of Hollywood, the Native American has always been a second-class, third-class, fourth-class citizen, and I don’t see Tonto that way at all. So it’s an opportunity for me to salute Native Americans.” With regard to the back-and-forth budget talks with the studio, Depp admitted that he and director Verbinski knew they’d be in for some negotiating from the get-go, but they also planned to be patient. “We knew that the budget was going to be huge initially, and we also knew that it was going to be shut down for a while, and it was kind of like we patiently wait — we shave a little bit here, we do a little bit there, [and] they fix it.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Johnny Depp Lone Ranger Project Reportedly Back On for Slightly Less Stupid Money

When Disney pulled the plug on its expensive Lone Ranger project , which was to reunite Pirates of the Caribbean cohorts Johnny Depp , Jerry Bruckheimer, and Gore Verbinski, a few industry-watchers held out hope that the studio and the filmmakers would yet still reach an agreement over how many hundreds of millions of dollars the would-be franchise would cost. Almost exactly two months later, it seems they’ve reached that compromise. More stupid money for someone!

Justin Bieber’s Christmas Album A ‘Natural Progression’

‘I don’t know who’s featured on the records,’ Tricky Stewart admits about previously announced surprise guest. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa White Wolf Justin Bieber Photo: FilmMagic Justin Bieber is set to drop his first Christmas single, “Mistletoe,” on October 18. And while fans are pretty psyched to hear it, they also want to know the names of every person who made the final cut on the album, Under the Mistletoe . Bieber confirmed that the Band Perry, Busta Rhymes, Boyz II Men and Usher are all contributing to the album, and teased that a huge surprise guest will also appear on the album. The rumor is that the big reveal will be Mariah Carey . Bieber’s producer Tricky Stewart said he has no idea who made the final cut. “I don’t know who’s featured on the records,” he told MTV News. “The records, as I know the records … Justin is the artist on the records. I know that he’s planning on doing things, but I have no idea what they are.” As Bieber puts the finishing touches on the album, which drops November 1, any additional production falls on Stewart’s production partner, Kuk Harrell, as Stewart moves on to other projects. “[I wouldn’t have to go back into the studio] because that’s Kuk Harrell’s neck of the woods,” Stewart said. “If something needs to be added, he’ll go in and knock it out and it’ll be fine.” Stewart noted that the album “seemed like a natural progression” for the teen star. “I think it just kind of made sense that I would be involved,” he said, having worked with Bieber throughout his professional career. “I think Justin doing a Christmas album is right on time … I feel that it’s almost necessary that he do a great Christmas album and it’s really, really good, too.” To get into the Christmas spirit months in advance of the holiday season, the team decorated their studio with all the appropriate Christmas accoutrements like Christmas trees and holiday scents. “Well, it’s different in the sense that we’ve been having Christmas and it’s not Christmas,” he said. “It looks and feels like Christmas except when we come out there’s no Christmas. You have to [imagine]. How else can you have Christmas in the middle of September?” Related Artists Justin Bieber

If You Promote a Movie 30,000 Feet in the Air, Will Anyone See?

You’ve got to hand it to the gang at Dreamworks — they are really trying to promote the hell out of their $80 million robot boxing movie Real Steel . Earlier this week, the studio stuck the film’s star Hugh Jackman into a WWE Raw ring in front of 15,000 wrestling fans who, it’s safe to say, were not too familiar with the work of the Tony Award-winning Australian. A strained, scripted and shameless six minutes worth-of Real Steel -shilling ensued. Today, meanwhile, mega-scale shows of Real Steel marketing continue — at LAX

Jay-Z Wasn’t Always On Freeway’s ‘What We Do’

Hov was only supposed to contribute an ad-lib, but he and Beanie Sigel ended up dropping verses, Free recalls on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Freeway and Sway Calloway Photo: MTV News Freeway has quite a few gems in his catalog, one being the Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel -assisted single “What We Do” from his 2003 debut, Philadelphia Freeway. The trio trade vivid verses filled with sarcastic regret over a Just Blaze-produced soul beat. While the track remains a fan favorite, Free admitted on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live” that he originally planned for the song to be a solo affair. Freeway recalled recording the track at Roc-A-Fella’s Bassline Studios in New York City. On any given night, the entire Roc roster would be milling about the studio, and the bearded MC often sought musical advice from his labelmates. “It was always that family vibe that they said was around. So I can go like, “Cam, how this sound?” Or “Jay, how that sound?” ” Free remembered. While recording “What We Do,” Philly Freezer asked Jay to record an ad-lib for the song. On the track, after Free spits the line “When the teeth stop showing, and the stomach start growling, then the heat start blowin’/ If you from the ‘hood, I know you feel me,” Jay jumps in and adds, “Keep goin’.” But after hearing what Free had already laid down, the God MC decided to contribute an entire verse. “So when I was recording “What We Do,” I originally called Jay just to do the “keep goin’.” So when he heard it, he sat down on the bench in Bassline and was just vibin’ out,” Free said before crossing his arms and nodding his head to mimic Jay’s writing technique. “He sat there for 10 minutes, then he was like, “I got you. This sh– crazy, I got you.” ” The then-rookie rapper got more than he bargained for, because after Jay offered his verse, Beanie Sigel came in to complete the trifecta. “Beans came in and heard that, and Beans was like, “Oh no, I’m next. I’m getting on that joint,” ” Free said. Would “What We Do” be the same without Jay and Beans? Let us know in the comments below!
