5 Ways To Start Living Up To Your Values

Excerpt from:

Sometimes it can be hard to do what you set out to do. For whatever reason, the values that you hold dear, like work ethic, are not doing anything for you at a particular moment. Maybe you set goals for yourself, but in the end, you feel like you are contradicting yourself because they never get accomplished. Perhaps you plan to be productive, or to gain the courage to do something important, but you end up falling into the same rut you said you never would. It can be hard not to fall prey to contradictions in your life, but there are always ways that you could change things and definitely step up your game!: 1. Combat cognitive dissonance with positive imaging. What exactly is cognitive dissonance, you ask? Well, it is the idea that your mind has a particular goal, but your actions speak as contradictions in that respect. For example, you might really despise lateness, but you are always running behind yourself. In order to overcome specific weaknesses in your life, you must be willing to go the distance to make your inner monologue and outer self match in values. By creating positive images in your head of your eventual success, a sense of inner motivation could be a strong catalyst for a change in your situation. 2. Write your goals down and post them somewhere as reference. This might seem like a simple, somewhat obvious way to remember what you mean to accomplish, but writing things down could be the tangible way you need to properly stack your priorities. Sometimes when the ideas are flowing through your head, any sort of distraction can cause you to lose focus from what you are planning to do. In order to make the most out of your time, it can be very useful to have everything laid out in front of you to instill subconscious motivation! I know that some people (like myself) are not very good at planning, but the very existence of a tangible goal list can be a helpful reminder of what you COULD be – and a core level of determination is all you need to get there! 3. Remind yourself of things you can look forward to. Sometimes the best events in life are ones that you have to patiently wait for. Maybe you are waiting for a trip to see someone you miss or have a few days off from work in order to just relax. If you make it so you have rewards or exciting prospects in the forefront to look forward to, it can be easier for you to be able to accomplish new things and be productive until those events arrive! Perhaps you want to teach yourself some of your favorite songs on your guitar or become more proficient at a certain aspect of your job. When you have something fun you’re waiting for, in the meantime, you can accomplish anything! 5 Ways To Make Life Transitions Easier 4. Know yourself and set goals based on the way you think. If you know that you naturally wake up late and are on the run all of the time, then don’t try and change your internal clock! Working around your weaknesses and finding productivity around your already formed habits can be a much better way to improve your productivity. Why try to change something that is already fundamental to your being? The same goes with procrastination and the way you get your work done – sometimes what hinders others in the work atmosphere is something that is successful for someone else! Everyone has their own individual habits and techniques that they use to get through the day, therefore, setting goals should be a unique process built around the person, not the task. 5. Start small and build on what you can slowly accomplish. Taking baby steps towards your goals is the best way to go, as trying to accomplish too much at once can tear down the very wall of productivity you created! As a close family member uses as his humorous motto: “How do you eat an elephant? By breaking it into small chunks.” In order to get the most out of what you have done, you have to take it slowly and make sure you are not taking on too much at once. Having productive, realistic goals makes for the strongest results, so being slow and deliberate about life can have its advantages! No matter what your core values are, the fundamental idea of bringing your inner motivation to the front of your mind is the best scenario for success! If you don’t naturally have that internal determination to accomplish tasks, channeling someone who has the productive bug might be the best bet for you. Try to spend more time in a lively, collaborative atmosphere where your ideas can be bounced off others and goals can be tweaked. Whether it’s a small personal goal or a lofty career move, it’s important to remember that the best outcomes come from internal motivation mixed with external action. Never forget the values you associate with yourself, as keeping yourself true to your methodology is what makes accomplishments what they are! Lindsay Lohan: Robbery Perpetrator … or VICTIM?

Lindsay Lohan will soon be tried for grand theft. But you know who SHOULD be? Kamofle & Co. They marked that necklace up 300 percent! Highway robbery! The necklace piece Linds is accused of bogarting from Kamofie & Co. has been appraised at $850. Legally, this could actually be a significant sum. That price tag does not qualify for felony grand theft, which requires a value of $950 or more. Kamofie was trying to sell the necklace to Lindsay for $2,500. Lindsay’s lawyer, Shawn Holley, will argue the D.A. should only be allowed to charge her client with a misdemeanor, based on the true value of the necklace. But even if Holley loses that argument, Kamofie’s owner already lost. After all, everyone knows jewelers mark stuff up, but 300 percent? That’s going to be a PR problem. Not to mention her selling the surveillance video. It’s hard to make an ungrateful and unprofessional brat like LiLo look like a victim or a sympathetic figure, but they have. Well, almost. Are Adele, Mumford And Sons Sign Of A New British Invasion?

Industry experts explain why this latest batch of artists from across the pond is making it in the U.S. By Sterling Wong Adele Photo: Andreas Rentz/ Getty Images It’s not quite Beatlemania or the ’90s Britpop invasion by the likes of Oasis, Blur and the Spice Girls, but astute music followers will have noticed that British music, has been quietly staging yet another attack on American charts. This time around, this assault is spearheaded by powerhouse diva, Adele, whose sophomore album, 21, is currently the bestselling one of the year and is pushing Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale off the #1 spot on next week’s Billboard 200 chart. Then there’s folk-rock band Mumford and Sons, whose album peaked at #2 a whole year after it was released and has impressively gone platinum. In fact, Adele, Mumford and Sons and Marsha Ambrosius , yet another British act, combined for the top three spots on the Billboard sales charts for one week in March, the first time in over 20 years that British artists have done so. Are we experiencing a third wave of British music invasion? Or is it mere coincidence that acts like Adele and Mumford and Sons are achieving chart success at the same time? “I think the U.S. market is just generally receptive to a lot more things than it’s been for a while, with all the changes in sales,” Village Voice music editor Maura Johnston observed. “You also have other aspects of the industry that have changed, like the Arcade Fire, who are on an independent label, winning the Album of the Year Grammy.” For Spin editor-in-chief Doug Brod, the success of these artists has got more to do with the quality of their music than their nation of origin. “With Mumford and Sons, their success has been long in the making,” Brod said. “The record’s been out for a year, and they’ve sold over a million copies and are now headlining festivals, but it took them a long time. “In Adele’s case, her previous record primed her for success,” Brod added. “It received Grammy nominations and won awards. And this record just took off because of the great songs.” Johnston also thinks some British acts are doing well by marketing to underserved audiences. “It was the same with Adele, and with Sade and Susan Boyle,” she said. “There are certain audiences that don’t get marketed to a lot by popular music, and so when they do, even if it’s just an appearance on a TV show like ‘Letterman’ or ‘Oprah,’ people will respond to a really powerful, good song.” The increasing popularity of digital music sources has also made it easier for Americans to seek out music from across the pond. “The digital marketplace levels the playing field,” Hits Daily Double senior editor Roy Trakin said. “It doesn’t matter where something is from at this point, because it is a globalized universe. British acts go in and they go out. Sometimes they can’t buy a break, and then sometimes you see them all over the place. But when things break, they can break instantaneously. That’s probably a factor.” At the moment there are two types of British acts that have achieved success in the U.S. recently: big-voiced divas like Adele, Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle; and rock bands like Coldplay and Mumford and Sons. Pop stars like Robbie Williams and girl group Sugababes have tried and failed. Is it possible for a British pop act to join the British invasion? All eyes are on Jessie J, whose Who You Are made its U.S. debut this week. Brod had a positive prognosis for Jessie. “She has a lot of momentum,” he said. “She’s been aligned with big American stars like B.o.B, Bruno Mars, Miley, so she has visibility. Her ‘Saturday Night Live’ performance also really put her on people’s minds, so it’s a matter of radio getting behind her at this point. I think if radio responds well to her, she could ride that to a big career here.” But Johnston opined that Jessie J’s success is not a litmus test of whether British pop acts can break America, because Jessie’s music already sounds very American. “Jessie J is so in the American mold of pop stars,” Johnston argued. “I would love to see what would happen right now if a [British pop group] Girls Aloud song got properly promoted and got a proper push. That to me is more of a litmus test, than something that sounds a lot like American music.” A potential game changer for Britpop artists could be the upcoming fall launch of Simon Cowell’s U.S. “X Factor.” If the show proves to be a hit, British acts will have a great high-profile platform on which to introduce themselves to the U.S. “You can’t discount Simon Cowell’s influence. He brought Leona to Clive Davis, who was onboard immediately. So whatever you may think of him as a judge or as a celebrity, he does wield big influence on what makes a pop star in the U.S. As long as he’s part of the conversation and the culture, he will have an effect on which British artists might make it here.” One thing is certain: The music industry is all about trends, so if Jessie J makes it here, that could open the door for other similar British acts. “It’s the Amy Winehouse-Duffy-Adele scenario,” Brod explained. “Amy Winehouse opened the door, and Duffy and Adele stepped in. Adele stuck, and Duffy sort of fell off, so there might be casualties involved. But a lot of it just depends on the quality of the music.” Related Artists Adele

Jon Stewart Talks ‘Death To Smoochy’ Sequel At Comedy Awards

‘I am under the impression that movie sequels are based on the success of the previous movie,’ he quips to MTV News. By Aly Semigran, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jon Stewart attends the 2011 Comedy Awards Photo: Charles Eshelman/ FilmMagic Sorry, Jon Stewart fans, but you’d better not expect to see the Emmy winner on the big screen again anytime soon. It seems the funnyman’s aspirations to return to acting are about the same as his ambitions to get into politics: nonexistent. MTV News caught up with Stewart on the red carpet of the Comedy Awards , which air on Comedy Central, VH1, Spike TV, Logo, CMT, TVLand and online at TheComedyAwards.com at 8 p.m. on Sunday (April 10). Stewart, who appeared on the silver screen in bit parts for films such as “Big Daddy,” “The Faculty” and “Half Baked” hasn’t acted in a movie in nearly a decade, when he appeared in the 2002 cult comedy “Death to Smoochy.” When asked if he would consider appearing in a follow-up to the dark flick, which was nothing short of a box-office bomb, the cable host quipped, “I am under the impression, and again I could be wrong about this, that movie sequels are based on the success of the previous movie. Now, I may be wrong!” However, Stewart — who cracked, “I think my character may have died at the end [of ‘Death to Smoochy’]. Or not. I don’t know” — did come up with an intriguing premise for a “Smoochy” prequel: “How did Smoochy get to be in the suit?” “I was never a very good actor. I can do myself like 10 percent madder or 10 percent happier,” he said of his acting skills. “I give props to the craft of acting, ’cause that’s not what I do. Or most comedians. Although there are some that are really good at it.” For now, Stewart will stay put doing what he is really good at — hosting “The Daily Show” — which won for Best Late Night Comedy Series at the Comedy Awards (during which Stephen Colbert hilariously ambushed Stewart’s acceptance speech). When faced with the prospect of 10 to 15 more years of doing the political satire, Stewart joked while pointing to himself, “Look what’s happened to me in the 10 years I’ve been doing it. … I’d be the crypt-keeper at a certain point.” Don’t miss the Comedy Awards at 8 p.m. Sunday night on Comedy Central, VH1, Spike TV, Logo, CMT, TVLand and online at TheComedyAwards.com .
