Dave Chappelle Set To Make Broadway Debut This Summer

Source: The Washington Post / Getty Dave Chappelle will take his talents to a different kind of stage this summer, but it should prove to be a breeze for the veteran performer. Chappelle is set to debut on Broadway via a limited run engagement beginning in July. Page Six reports : The iconoclast comic, actor and famed Rick James/Prince impersonator is set to make his Broadway debut with one of those fancy “limited engagements” from July 9 to 13 at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. He will arrive on the Great White Way with plenty of live performance chops. In addition to decades of work on the standup club circuit, he’s cranked out a series of acclaimed live-to-tape Netflix specials: “The Art of Spin,” “Deep in the Heart of Texas,” “Equanimity” and “The Bird Revelations.” “Equanimity” and his guest host turn on “Saturday Night Live” scored him Emmy Awards in 2018 and 2017, respectively. Titled “Dave Chappelle Live on Broadway,” tickets for the run go on sale to the general public on June 18 via Ticketmaster. — Photo: Getty

The Body Shaming Of Inanimate Objects Illustrates The True ‘Larger Problem’ In Society

View original post here:

Source: SOPA Images / Getty We’re in an age where people are using their voices and dollars to demand visibility and recognition. When plus-size is “represented” in media or runways, it’s often a 12 or 14. While there is more visibility, it’s still limited. Plus size people of prominence get beauty shots, not body shots on magazine covers. Plus size models going down the runway are sans stomachs and flab. So when Nike quietly released a size 16/18 model in London’s Oxford Street store, most people were pleased. Source: Jeff Greenberg / Getty The plus size mannequin is not a new concept. You will see them in plus size stores like Lane Bryant and department stores that carry size inclusive brands, like Macy’s and Rachel Roy. The plus-size mannequin features thick thighs, a flat stomach simultaneously holding some fat, and soft arms. As a size 14 woman, with a body that is shaped similarly, I felt seen and celebrated. While weight and health is correlated (yes, it’s true that it is harder to recover from injury when you are obese), size and exercise are not. People of all size exercise and people of all sizes deserve high performance exercise gear. This mannequin is part of the revamped women’s space which is dedicated to “celebrating diversity and inclusivity of sport.” Plus size women are often intimidated at the gym, a phrase called gymtimidation. While the gym is a place to get in shape, women of a larger size are often stared at and made to feel uncomfortable. Hence reasons for places like Curves (a gym for women) or classes that are geared directly toward plus size women. How you look or what you wear can have an immediate effect on your self-esteem. Plus size women deserve, need, and want clothes that they can wear to help take care of their bodies and isn’t the same outfit that consists of a gifted t-shirt from an event or an outfit they wear to clean the house. The irony and energy that society always tells plus size women to “work out” is the same energy that people are using toward Nike, appalled that they would even consider “normalizing obesity.” Tanya Gold, a writer for the Telegraph, wrote a fatphobic op-ed entitled, Obese Mannequins Are Selling Women A Dangerous Lie . “She is, in every measure, obese, and she is not readying herself for a run in her shiny Nike gear. She cannot run. She is, more likely, pre-diabetic and on her way to a hip replacement. What terrible cynicism is this on the part of Nike?” This automatic stereotyping of larger bodies, without being a doctor or even knowing someone’s medical history is isolating and irresponsible. People that are upset seeing a plus size mannequin doing the exact same thing that you are upset that plus size people apparently aren’t doing is such backwards and problematic thinking. Throughout her article, her words are laced with fatphobic commentary like, “She heaves with fat,” illustrates a larger problem. We’re so careful about Black Lives Matter , focused on inclusion within the LGBTQTI community, however, when it comes to larger bodies, fatness is the misfit of marginalized communities. The plus-size population remains ridiculed, disrespected, and isolated. No wonder the community is so strong, at times, it’s literally all we have. The body shaming of an inanimate object illustrates a larger problem in society surrounding the idiosyncrasies surrounding plus size women and their bodies. Frank Ocean Talks Starting A Family, Leaving Def Jam & Navigating His Love Life In New Interview

Source: ANGELA WEISS / Getty Frank Ocean Opens Up In A ‘Dazed” Magazine Interview It’s rare the elusive Frank Ocean opens up about his personal life to the public. But more recently, he’s become a little more transparent . It helps when his own friends are interviewing him. In the summer issue for Dazed magazine, Frank had everyone from Billy Porter to Janet Mock to Big Freedia ask him a question and in most cases, his answers were direct and to the point and in other cases, he gave a little more details. View this post on Instagram Take a seat. #FrankOcean covers our summer 2019 issue, interviewed by his friends, fans and collaborators from #JohnWaters to @jpegmafia, @amandlasponsored to @janetmock. Rapper JPEGMAFIA  posed the question: JPEGMAFIA: How did it feel fu**ing over a label like that ( Ocean released  Endless in 2016 to fulfill his contract with Def Jam, releasing Blonde  independently one day later )? Old white ni**as do that to us all the time, but how did it feel giving them a taste of their own elixir? And what did you build in the video for Endless ? Can I live in it? FRANK OCEAN:  Eyy, Peggy! You know, it’s funny talking about it these days because I couldn’t really tell anybody anything for a couple of years. Couldn’t tell anyone at the label, obviously. But I also couldn’t talk with anyone at Apple because the industry is too small and it would’ve gotten back to the label for sure. So I kept it to myself and a few in my circle. I carried my hard drives around with me when I travelled because I used to not store anything online. Those drives became a physical representation of the stakes. If the files had leaked, everything would have worked out very differently for me. When August came around and both projects were uploaded I felt the euphoria, yeah, but mostly I just needed to sleep. I probably slept something like 15 hours. To answer your second question, I built a 12-foot staircase with my fucking bare hands some days before! It’s in my storage, you want it?? Frank, who came out as loving a man in 2012, also discussed navigating the industry as a queer person with Billy Porter: BILLY PORTER: How are you navigating being queer in the music business? Do you feel marginalized? If so, why do you think this is the case? FRANK OCEAN: I navigate it pretty smooth so far. If anything my personal life needs the GPS sometimes. View this post on Instagram A Frank pic a day keeps the doctor away – so here’s another one. More to come… stay tuned. ⠀ ⠀ Photography @willyvanderperre⠀ Styling @robbiespencer⠀⠀ Grooming @dat_barber_nat Make-up @lynseyalexander⠀ ⠀ Editor-in-chief @isabellaburley⠀ Creative Director @robbiespencer⠀ Art Director @reidjamie ⠀ ⠀ @blonded wears t-shirt @strayrats, all jewellery Frank’s own⠀ ⠀ Taken from the summer 2019 issue of #Dazed ⠀ ⠀ #DAZEDSUMMER2019 #FrankOcean⠀ A post shared by Dazed (@dazed) on Jun 10, 2019 at 8:01am PDT   Another interesting moment came when Raymond Buck asked Frank about the future, and he had a simple answer: RAYMOND BUCK: What’s left for you to achieve? FRANK OCEAN:  Building a family. Well, well… Seems like  Rihanna and him are on the same wave when it comes to familial dreams. For more of what Frank has to say, you can check out his full interview(s) here .

Dirty Pool: Public Swimming Closings In Louisville Put Black Children At Significantly Higher Risk Of Drowning

Source: Afton Almaraz / Getty Pool Closing In Louisville Leaves Black Children At Risk Of Drowning Black people not knowing how to swim is an ugly racial stereotype, but sadly, it is also a reality for many African-American children who live in Louisville, Kentucky. According to the Courier-Journal , the city has decided to close four of the city’s public swimming pools including the only pool on the city’s West End aka “the Black side of town”. Not only does that ruin some of the summer fun for the kids, but it also puts them at SERIOUS risk in the future… According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 10 people die every day from accidental drowning. If you are a black child, you are 5.5 times more likely to drown than white children. The disparity is greatest among kids ages 11-12. All of this because Lousiville is facing budget cuts and the first thing to go when politicians decide to save money are programs that help minorities and poor people. ‘Merica. SMFH.

You Played Yourself: DJ Khaled Is Getting ‘Father Of Asahd’ FLAMED For Throwing Tantrum Over Album Sales

Source: Theo Wargo / Getty Fans Call DJ Khaled “FAKE” After Tantrum Reports Whew chile! Dj Khaled is catching heat after a report exposed how allegedly nasty and rude he was towards his label over his flopping album streams. A source says Khaled stormed in Epic records and with his entourage and was “angry” and “yelling” after finding that his recent album failed to debut at the top of the charts. Reportedly he went on an EPIC rant that turned folks off who work for him. Page Six reports:  ‘He threw a temper tantrum,” blaming the also-ran album placing on his label chiefs’ not understanding streaming services and bundle deals. A second source, who also described how the disappointed DJ did not hold back his displeasure, added, “No. 2 won’t do for Khaled. He was not happy when the album didn’t debut at No. 1 . . . Not happy at all.” An industry insider added: “He was furious. There was some nasty stuff said. Publicly, he’s all about ‘positivity,’ but there is a mean side to him that people don’t see . . . He overhyped the record and blew it up as his biggest album ever.” YIKES! Khaled also posted and deleted a video where he seemingly berated Tyler The Creator’s number 1 album as “mysterious music.” This isn’t the Dj Khaled that folks are are used to online, who likes to preach positivity and folks are calling him out for his salty behavior. so much of @djkhaled 's brand is positivity and wanting/seeing success for others. it's always been about there being room out here for everyone to win until he isn't the one winning…then all the inspirational shit goes out the window. #WeThePressed — Jamal (@JamalJimoh) June 7, 2019 Hit the flip to see how folks are responding to DJ Khaled being seemingly salty over being second best. They’re dragging him!
