Nicki Minaj Admits She’s ‘Becoming More Guarded’

‘Now that so many eyes are on me, I feel I have to deliver,’ rapper says in interview with Paper magazine. By Tomika L. Anderson Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images Fame is beginning to go to Nicki Minaj ‘s head, but not in the way you might think. The Grammy-nominated rapper revealed to Paper magazine that the more successful she becomes, the more pressure she feels to deliver — and that all that stress is taking a psychological toll. “Ugh! I have been working so much,” the 29-year-old tells interviewer Simon Doonan, Barneys New York’s creative ambassador at large. “Success came, and now that so many eyes are on me, I feel I have to deliver. And it’s a business. No joke. I guess I’m stressing more than I should be, and I think I am becoming more guarded.” To relax, Ms. Minaj admits to indulging in reality TV — and apparently, a lot of it. “I love [‘Mob Wives’ star] Big Ang … And I love the way those girls talk to each other: ‘Don’t YOU be coming at ME!!!’ I love every freakin’ moment. And I watch ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ and ‘[The Real Housewives of] Beverly Hills.’ ” Music, of course, is also an emotional outlet for the rap star. She says the process of recording her upcoming album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, made her feel “very free.” “The album is like a collage of all my emotions. I’m not sticking to any particular style. I am doing what I feel without restrictions. So it’s very free and very me.” The issue hits stands on February 20. Meanwhile, look for Minaj this Sunday at the Grammys , where she is expected to perform her new single “Roman Holiday.” She is also up for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance for “Moment 4 Life” with Drake. Grammys Live Stream: What Shocking Entrances Will We See?

How will Lady Gaga arrive this year? Join Sway and James Montgomery on the red carpet, starting 5 p.m. Sunday on MTV.com. By Gil Kaufman Jennifer Lopez at the 2000 Grammys Photo: Getty Images What’s the point of getting all dolled up for the Grammy Awards if no one notices your outfit? Since not everyone can earn a nomination or score a performance slot, sometimes you have to make your own news by crashing the red carpet with an eye-popping outfit that is sure to get tongues wagging. It’s anyone’s guess what this year’s attendees will be wearing on Sunday night at the 54th annual awards show, but MTV News will be camped out on the carpet for a full three hours before the festivities kick off and we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for all the outrageous looks and fashions. Click for photos of our most-shocking Grammy red carpet moments! In the meantime, we thought it was worth a look back at some of the legendary entrances from Grammys past: Lady Gaga egg : Sure, Justin Bieber toted his pet snake to last year’s show, but it was, of course, Lady Gaga who turned the most heads by getting carried down the carpet in a giant, see-through egg that she incubated in before emerging later in the night for her performance of “Born This Way.” Britney gets bodied : Britney Spears has long prided herself on wearing what she wants, when she wants. But someone should have pulled her aside in 2010 before she exited the car in an oddball Dolce & Gabbana bodysuit overlaid with a lace dress that turned heads for all the wrong reasons. M.I.A.’s pregnancy chic : With her middle finger firmly tucked into place, the rapper/singer made her way into the 2009 show while nine-months pregnant in a cartoony, ruffled blue maternity dress and matching sneakers. Coldplay play dress up : It was kind of cool when Coldplay stuck with their bold Sgt. Pepper’s-style suits for the whole Viva La Vida tour. But when they wore them to the 2009 show , it just felt … silly. OK Go … back to the drawing board : Viral icons OK Go are experts at drawing attention to their music with trippy, how-did-they-do-that videos. They drew mostly sniggers, though, when they donned matching brocade curtain-looking red-and-gold suits to the 2007 show. Their smartest move may have been to cover their faces with red cloth. R. Kelly, man of mystery : Kels has made a career out of being inscrutable , but his bold sartorial choice at the 2004 Grammys was, well, weird. From the neck down he wore an elegant three-button black suit and tie, but the matching Robin mask? Who knows? Alicia Keys gets funky : Nobody really knows what Keys was thinking in 2002 when she walked the carpet wearing embroidered jeans, sandals, a white tank and a sheer green sari-like shift with a built in, bedazzled headdress. Toni Braxton lets it all hang out : Sometimes it’s what you don’t wear that gets attention. In 2001, singer Braxton sported a barely-there white “dress” that hardly covered her assets with strips of material that dangled in the front and back. Jennifer Lopez’s plunging neckline : Way before she was an “American Idol” judge, Lopez sent hearts racing in 2000 with her instantly infamous plunging neckline Versace gown. Chaos! Profanity! Grammy Rehearsals: Rihanna, Katy Perry Sit Front Row

From seating-chart plotting to all-star sound checks, we take you behind the scenes at Grammy run-throughs. By James Montgomery Adam Levine rehearsing for the 54th Annual Grammy Awards Photo: Rick Diamond/ WireImage LOS ANGELES — Everywhere you turn inside Staples Center, there are people (and things) in motion: Set pieces are being noisily constructed (and just as noisily deconstructed ), lights are raised to the ceiling, focused, then lowered again, cameras on cranes swoop in and nearly scrape the stage, walkie-talkies crackle, security guards shift their weight from one foot to the other, musicians scramble down hallways, techs assemble drum kits and tune guitars, directors shout instructions and stare intently at their clipboards. If there’s a method to all this madness, it is not readily apparent. Mostly, you just try to stay out of the way. It’s all in preparation for Sunday’s 54th Grammy Awards , of course, and if everything goes according to plan, you probably won’t even notice the intricate details (camera movements, presenter cues, etc.) that were rehearsed time and time again or think twice about just how they get all those massive video screens to work in perfect synchronization. The goal is to make these things all appear to be seamless, effortless, nearly invisible. Which is why, in the days leading up to the big show, the Staples Center is one continuously buzzing hive of activity. Onstage, Foster the People , Maroon 5 and the recently reunited Beach Boys are working out the kinks for their Sunday-night performance, which, at the moment, include monitor malfunctions, a de-tuned organ and a wayward timpani drum. Maroon frontman Adam Levine stands stage left, fiddling with his in-ear and humming his harmonies over and over again. At one point, a stagehand saves him from being smashed by a gigantic LED screen, which is being lowered directly above his head. Stage right, Mark Foster has his arms crossed, a gigantic smile creased across his face, marveling at the sheer spectacle of the thing. Eventually, after an army of producers and techs have crisscrossed the stage, the Beach Boys amble up, take their places and, without a moment of rehearsal, positively nail the wide-screen harmonies of “Good Vibrations.” Levine can’t help but laugh at the display, and as the song lilts along, he mimes the crashing timpani drums and mouths the chorus. Of course, the action onstage is only part of the production (though it is a part that truly never ends; LL Cool J and Nicki Minaj are set to rehearse Friday (February 10), and there are rumors that both Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen will share the stage at some point too). While instruments are tuned and harmonies perfected, an army of production assistants are busy plotting the Grammy seating chart — a bit of well-planned politicking that’s nearly as important to the attendees as actually winning a gilded gramophone. Seatmates are meticulously plotted by producers, and how close you sit to the stage itself (and who you’re sitting with ) is a pretty good representation of just how much clout you’ve got. Which means that, on Sunday, the front row will be populated by Katy Perry, Rihanna and Fergie. Heavily-favored Adele will sit in row two, next to Bruce Springsteen. Taylor Swift shares a row with Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga is seated next to Miranda Lambert, Bon Iver is across the aisle from R. Kelly (imagine the possibilities!), and Chris Brown will rub elbows with the indomitable Diana Ross. Of course, all of this could change — these are just the rehearsals after all. And as the countdown to the big show continues, there’s still a whole lot of rehearsing to do. Even after the show goes live, that constant blur of motion inside Staples is likely to continue unabated. This is music’s biggest night, after all. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! John Legend ‘Disappointed’ Kanye Isn’t Up For Album Of The Year Grammy

‘It had hit songs and just had quality tracks all the way through,’ Legend says of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. By Kelley L. Carter Kanye West Photo: Chris Hyde/Getty Images John Legend is bummed that his buddy and collaborator Kanye West isn’t up for one of the biggest awards at the Grammys . The rapper and producer is the most nominated musician going into Sunday, but his work is missing from the coveted Album of the Year category. “Well, I was rooting for Kanye and Jay-Z [ Watch the Throne ] to be nominated for album of the year or Kanye’s album [ My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy ] to be nominated for album of the year. So I’m a little disappointed that it’s not,” Legend told MTV News. “I really thought [ MBDTF ] was the best work that was done in popular music this year, as far as a great album that you could listen to all the way through and really enjoy. It had some hit songs and just had … quality tracks all the way through.” That said, he’s tossing his support behind critical favorite Adele . The Brit has many celebrity fans, and many of her musical colleagues are rooting for her to take home the night’s top prize. “I’m really happy for Adele. I think she’s an amazing artist and she seems to be the odds-on favorite to win a lot of awards and she deserves it. And we’ll see what else happens,” Legend said. “It’s hard to call these awards. Sometimes you think you know who’s going to win, but they surprise you.” And what about West? Is he upset that his work didn’t get nominated for Album of the Year? “I don’t want to speak for him,” Legend said, adding, “I was upset that he didn’t. I really felt like I heard a lot of music this year and this was my favorite album. I just think he made two exceptional albums that were both eligible this year. … Maybe they canceled each other out. I wish he was up for Album of the Year.” Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! ‘Safe House’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics point out similarities to the ‘Bourne’ series and even Denzel Washington’s previous work. By Kevin P. Sullivan Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds in “Safe House” Photo: Universal Pictures Denzel Washington returns as a cynical old pro who must work with a novice in order to survive. This time it’s called “Safe House,” and Washington plays a rogue CIA operative under the protection of a rookie, played by Ryan Reynolds . “Safe House” has earned middling reviews, many of which take note of the film’s similarities to both the “Bourne” franchise and Washington’s previous work with director Tony Scott. Here is our roundup of reviews for “Safe House”: The Story “Washington plays the notorious Tobin Frost, a brilliant former CIA operative who’s turned traitor, selling secrets to any nation or enemy cell willing to buy them. After years on the run, he turns himself in at the American embassy in Cape Town, South Africa. He’s then taken to the local agency safe house where Reynolds, as the ambitious Matt Weston, is its bored, rookie minder. Matt longs to prove himself and see some real action in the field, and he gets it sooner than he expects when the house comes under a vicious, heavily armed attack and he and Tobin must go on the run together.” — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press The Stars “Mr. Washington, it almost goes without saying, is its anchor; when he’s on screen everything seems to matter more, so much so that a prequel seems inevitable. How Frost became the man that he did is one of the mysteries, as is how well Weston and the actor playing him will rise to the occasion. Mr. Reynolds, whose curiously unsettled career is its own puzzle, here rises to meet Mr. Washington’s challenge, investing Weston with a slow-building, believable vulnerability.” — Manohla Dargis, New York Times The Action “The movie, as if on an action time clock, punches in the standard set pieces: bloody fights, clattering shoot-outs, an escape through a packed soccer stadium. Some of this stuff is well-done, and some of it has been done a lot better. Yet ‘Safe House’, even when it’s pummeling you effectively, has very little up its sleeve. Basically, the movie is a fizzless ‘Bourne’ episode crossed with ‘Training Day,’ featuring Washington as a good-egg-gone-rotten who, you know, has his reasons. Mostly, he schools Matt, his guard-turned-pursuer, in what it means to lie.” — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly The Director “Director Espinosa shoots virtually everything in tight but wobbly close-up, and the human and vehicular combat often brakes right at the edge of visual incoherence. Just as often the brakes give out completely. Even at its most frantic and mechanical, the movie relies on Washington to provide a visual anchor, some sociopathic calm amid the storm.” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune The Final Word “Essentially a two-hour chase with a few brief breaks to catch its breath, ‘Safe House’ is an elemental cat-and-mouse game elaborated to the point of diminishing returns. Terse and understated, this is a spy vs. spy tale designed to minimize talk and maximize action, not at all a bad thing in movies but over-worked to near-exhaustion here.” — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter Check out everything we’ve got on “Safe House.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Foster The People Grammy Performance ‘A Piece Of History’

Sharing stage with Beach Boys and Maroon 5 for Sunday’s Grammys ‘icing on the cake’ in breakthrough year, frontman tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Mark Foster of Foster The People Photo: Getty Images LOS ANGELES — Foster the People don’t want to reveal too much about their performance at Sunday’s 54th Grammy Awards , where they’ll share the stage with the surviving members of the Beach Boys (together for the first time in more than 20 years) and Maroon 5. But they will tell you what song they won’t be playing: their signature hit, “Pumped Up Kicks.” “I think my head would explode if [the Beach Boys] were playing ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ with us,” frontman Mark Foster told MTV News during Grammy rehearsals Thursday. “I would probably have to say ‘No, no, no. That’s unacceptable.’ No, we’re going to be playing with them. ” Both FTP and Maroon 5 will honor the reunited Boys — Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and early member David Marks — by singing a medley of their classics, before teaming up with the surf (and psych) legends for a triumphant final take on the seminal “Good Vibrations.” And though all three bands have been rehearsing the performance for two days now, Foster is still having a difficult time believing it’s actually happening. “We walked into the rehearsal room and met all of the Beach Boys for the first time yesterday, and it was a trip for all of us,” he said. “We grew up listening to their music since we were little kids — I probably wouldn’t be in music today if it wasn’t for them. So, to see them all in the same room together, and then playing with them, it’s wild. It’s a dream come true.” So much so that, in a year that saw FTP not only score a certified smash with “Kicks,” but tour the world and earn a pair of Grammy nominations, Sunday’s performance unquestionably will be the highlight of their young career. “I think out of everything we’ve done so far, this is the top for us. This is the icing on the cake,” Foster explained. “We were talking about it yesterday: Exactly a year ago, we were playing in front of 250 people in L.A., and so much has changed since then. It’s all kind of a blur looking back on it, but we were reflecting on it yesterday … our album came out five, six months ago, and now we’re playing with the Beach Boys at the Grammys. Things have changed pretty quickly.” So, win or lose on Grammy night (and, for the record, Foster seems to think his band is going to get creamed in both the Best Alternative Music Album and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance categories), Foster the People are going to be just fine. After all, they’re playing with the freaking Beach Boys. And it doesn’t get much better than that. “I think people that are tuning in are going to see a piece of history. This is the first time the Beach Boys have played together in over 20 years,” Foster said. “They’re one of the best bands of all time. Brian Wilson has left such a mark on musical history, to be able to see him up there with the other guys doing what they do, it’s amazing.” Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! ‘Hunger Games’ Soundtrack: Pre-Game With An Expert Playlist

Hobnobbing helps you get to know the album’s featured artists through their best works. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate On Monday, Taylor Swift will enter the MTV arena to debut the music video for her Civil Wars collaboration, “Safe and Sound,” which appears on the “Hunger Games” soundtrack. And following the premiere, the country cutie will stick around MTV.com for an exclusive 30-minute interview about the lead single, her upcoming projects and more. So for Peeta’s sake, tune in, OK? But as any “Hunger Games” fan can attest, Swift isn’t the only artist to be reaped for the T-Bone Burnett-produced companion album (out March 20). Arcade Fire, the Decemberists, Neko Case and Miranda Lambert are all reportedly contributing to the effort. So to prepare for what’s sure to be an epic soundtrack, we’ve asked several music experts to recommend top tunes from each performer—a pre-Games playlist, if you will. So put down your bow and arrow, grab your earbuds and settle in with these hand-picked selections: The Decemberists “No shortage of truly great tunes (with truly epic titles) from the Pacific Northwest’s leading purveyors of erudite indie. From the hard-charging horns of ‘Sixteen Military Wives’ (off 2005’s Picaresque ) to the 12-string shimmy of ‘Down by the Water’ (from last year’s The King Is Dead ) — with proggy dalliances like ‘You’ll Not Feel the Drowning’ and ‘The Prettiest Whistles Won’t Wrestle the Thistles Undone’ in between — the ‘rists have never met a genre they wouldn’t tackle … or a song title they couldn’t stretch to infinity. — James Montgomery, Rock Writer, MTV News “The Decemberists are often described as ‘indie-folk’ or ‘chamber pop,’ but they are constantly shifting into new genres and playing with foreign sounds. ‘Here I Dreamt I Was an Architect’ is from their first album and doesn’t have the same epic quality that their later albums (most of which are sprawling mini-operas), but it does capture frontman Colin Meloy’s unending melancholy and slightly fanciful worldview. It’s catchy as hell too.” — Kyle Anderson, Staff Writer, Entertainment Weekly “Asking me to choose a favorite Decemberists song is like asking me to choose a favorite pair of shoes — I have so many! It’s almost impossible! But I’ll do it. The apotheosis of the entire Decemberists catalogue, for me, is ‘Shanty for the Arethusa’ off of their 2003 album Her Majesty the Decemberists . This isn’t a song. It’s a sensory odyssey. Dude, the way they bring to life the creaking of the rotten hull of an olde-timey ship feels so real that I can almost feel myself getting scurvy.” — Tamar Anitai, Managing Editor, MTV Buzzworthy Arcade Fire “They broke through with Funeral, thanks in no small part to anthemic, wide-screen melodramas like ‘Wake Up’ and ‘Rebellion (Lies)’ — songs seemingly created for stadium-uniting sing-alongs — backtracked on that all-encompassing stance with insular, world-weary Neon Bible tracks like ‘Black Mirror’ and ‘My Body is a Cage,’ and, finally, with The Suburbs, ‘Month of May’ and ‘We Used to Wait,’ just decided to ditch all the subtlety and subterfuge and just become Springsteen disciples. Hey, whatever works.” — Montgomery “Canada’s finest indie exports move at only two speeds: Epic and super-epic. ‘No Cars Go’ falls in the latter category, beginning with a simple hum-and-strum, then building into great swirls of chaotic orchestral noise, with the damaged, desperate voices of frontpeople/couple Win Butler and R

Rihanna, Chris Brown Return To The Grammys: Three Years Later

With the once-troubled exes poised to return to Sunday’s show, we look back on the assault that changed everything. By Rebecca Thomas Rihanna performs at the 2011 Grammys Photo: Getty Images They were R&B’s answer to Britney and Justin. Young, gifted and famous, Rihanna and Chris Brown had become a favorite of the blogs and mags in 2008; pictures of them coupled up on the beach or just making a fast food run cropped up everywhere. Rihanna once remarked that Brown helped her to feel her age in a very grown-up industry. But everything changed on the night of February 7, 2009. Brown’s assault on girlfriend Rihanna would change the career trajectories of both, catapulting one to superstardom and launching the other on an unlikely comeback trail. Three years later, with the two stars are poised to return to the Grammy stage, MTV News looks back. February 7, 2009 : Rihanna hits the stage at a pre-Grammy party hosted by producer Timbaland in Los Angeles. The Bajan stunner performs her smash “Umbrella,” among other tunes. Earlier that night, she’s snapped looking cheerful with boyfriend Chris Brown at music honcho Clive Davis’ annual Grammy bash. February 8, 2009 : Reports surface that Brown and a female passenger was involved in a car accident. E! News confirms that neither Rihanna nor Brown will appear at the Grammy Awards ceremony that night; both were scheduled to perform. The Los Angeles Police Department begin investigating a felony battery report against the Virginia crooner. February 19, 2009 : TMZ posts a gruesome photo of Rihanna taken by LAPD just after the February assault. The image of the singer — bruised, eyes swollen and mouth split — confirms what had been rumor up until then. Then-19-year-old Brown becomes the subject of public outrage. The backlash is only beginning, though, as radio stations across the country announce bans on Brown’s music. June 22, 2009 : Brown has been mostly quiet, on the advice, he says, of his representatives. In May, Vibe publishes a cover story, “Tainted Love,” delving into how the young couple unraveled. It’s a more nuanced portrait that describes both Brown’s and Rihanna’s upbringings in households rife with domestic violence. It’s also announced that Brown will strike a plea deal giving him 180 days of community service. The same month, the “Forever” singer uploads a video apology to the Web: “I’ve told Rihanna countless times and I’m telling you today, I’m truly, truly sorry that I wasn’t able to handle the situation both differently and better,” he pleads. September 2, 2009 : Brown tapes an interview with CNN’s “Larry King Live.” Accompanied by his attorney, the singer — seldom off-pitch onstage — struggles to strike the right chord. But even his unfortunate choice of neckwear comes under scrutiny. November 6, 2009 : Rihanna sits down for a “20/20” special, detailing for anchor Diane Sawyer her assault at the hands of Brown. November 9, 2009 : Rihanna tells MTV’s Sway she doesn’t want to be the “domestic-violence spokesperson.” November 20, 2009 : Rihanna drops the dark and introspective Rated R, sporting a razor-cut, tough-girl ‘do on the album cover that sparks a frenzy of its own in Stateside hair salons. The LP is widely received as a rumination on her tragic relationship with Brown. May 17, 2010 : Unofficially on ice with his label, Jive, Brown joins with homey and YMCMB rapper Tyga for the Fan of a Fan mixtape. The project yields slow-burning smash singles like “Deuces” and “No Bullsh–.” February 10, 2011 : Two years after the incident, the “Russian Roulette” singer agrees to loosen a restraining order against Brown. Breezy also earns high marks for progress from the judge in his ongoing probation case. November 12, 2011 : Red-tressed Rihanna drops Loud, and the Grammy-nominated album is a sunny departure from the brooding R. That month she and Brown also take to their respective Twitter accounts and signal in a series of posts that they’re ready to move on from the assault narrative. March 22, 2011 : Livid over questions about his relationship with ex Rihanna, Brown smashes a chair in an ABC green room after a “Good Morning America” interview. The outburst threatens to overshadow what will be a highly successful release, the F.A.M.E album. 2011 : It’s a year of triumphs for the former duo: From awards to VMA performances, Grammy nods and critical acclaim, the Rihanna Navy and Team Breezy rally behind their idols. January 19, 2012 : After the blogosphere lights up with rumors that Rih and Brown are hooking up again, a rep for Brown denies the two have reunited, insisting the superstar exes are “just friends.” Brown’s representative also confirms he won’t be doing any press this year. February 8, 2012 : Recording Academy announces that Brown will perform at Sunday’s show; Rihanna has been confirmed for a collabo with rockers Coldplay. The revelation sets up the potential for a public reunion. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Adele Gets Grammy Advice From Jonas Brothers

‘A lot of times there’s a lot of artists that didn’t end up winning that became huge,’ Joe tells MTV News of this year’s Best New Artist class. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Photo: Columbia Three years ago, Adele was an up-and-coming singer who was just beginning bubble on the American pop scene thanks to her 19 single “Chasing Pavements.” In 2009, a year after the release of her debut, the still-somewhat-unknown Brit won the Best New Artist Grammy . She was well on her way to becoming one of the biggest voices in pop. This year, she’ll head into Sunday’s Grammys with six nominations for her heartbreaking 21. But back in ’09, Adele — who had yet to build up a big Stateside fanbase — managed beat the likes of the Jonas Brothers and fellow Brit Duffy in the category. Three years later, the JoBros can laugh off the loss. “We lost,” Kevin joked to MTV News when we caught up with the guys this week. Asked if he had any 2012 Grammy advice for the “Rolling in the Deep” singer, he could only say, “To Adele … she’s only like one of the best artists ever. It’s cool.” Joe also had some words of wisdom for this year’s crop of Best New Artist nominees, including the Band Perry, Bon Iver, J. Cole, Nicki Minaj and Skrillex. “I think, go in knowing that you’re a winner already. You got that far, you should feel like a champion,” Joe said. “I believe Norah Jones said it, ‘Sometimes it can be a curse. You get scared if you’re gonna win. I’m not saying there’s a curse on Adele — she’s amazing! — but a lot of times there’s a lot of artists that didn’t end up winning that became huge, so you’re a winner [regardless].” And as the JoBros dished, if you do lose, there’s always a consolation prize. “You do get a really cool like gold necklace, metal thing,” Kevin revealed. J. Cole’s Grind Earns Him Best New Artist Grammy Nod

Coveted nomination follows #1 debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, and a string of well-received mixtapes. By Nadeska Alexis J. Cole Photo: C. Flanigan/FilmMagic It’s been a long road to release for J. Cole, who finally dropped his debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, in September after putting out several mixtapes. Now, the Roc Nation signee is seeing his hard work pay off with a nomination for Best New Artist at the 2012 Grammy Awards . Cole World debuted at #1 in September and has sold more than 500,000 copies to date, making it an impressive freshman LP for a rapper. Make no mistake, though, Jermaine Cole’s success has been a long time in the making. After dropping his mixtape The Come Up in 2007, the North Carolina native polished his craft and released The Warm Up two years later, catching the ear of Jay-Z — specifically with the hit single “Lights Please” — and landing himself a record deal at Roc Nation. Even with Hov as his mentor, however, Jermaine continued to push things along with his own solo efforts. His debut album was hit with a series of delays and he made up for the wait by releasing his late 2010 mixtape Friday Night Lights. Between his tapes and a few free-floating singles he’d recorded over the years, Cole had enough material to warrant an opening spot on Rihanna’s Loud Tour in June. When that wrapped, Cole kicked off his Any Given Sunday series in the summer of 2011, which found him releasing new tracks or EPs weekly, leading right into the debut of his first studio album. That persistent grind resulted in noteworthy album sales and a Grammy nomination, which Jay-Z said is well-deserved . “I think it’s great for him, because I’m sure it’s a dream of his. We grew up seeing Michael Jackson, and I’m sure he grew up seeing whatever moment stuck in his mind, so I know it’s great for him to do that,” Hov told MTV News. “I think he’s already won Best New Artist, to me. His journey is what I’m really excited about.” Tune into the Grammys on Sunday on CBS at 8 p.m. ET to see if Cole takes home the award for Best New Artist. His competitors in the category are Nicki Minaj, Skrillex, Bon Iver and the Band Perry. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions!
