Kindergarten Student Suspended for Distracting, Distruptive Haircut

A five-year old kindergarten student named Ethan Clos was suspended from school in Springfield, Ohio last week because he showed up with a mohawk. We wish we were making this up. The child’s mother, Keshia Castle, says her child begged for the hairdo throughout spring break and that “all the little kids were going over and feeling it” when Ethan was dropped off at school Wednesday. And that was exactly the problem, according to Superintendent Gregg Morris. “Our dress and grooming policies are designed to ensure that clothing and hairstyles do not cause a distraction to the learning environment,” Morris said in a statement. The school’s handbook does state that hair “shall be worn above the eyebrows and must be kept clean,” while adding that “styling or coloring arrangements which are disruptive or distracting are not permissible.” Morris referred to this policy in telling  WHIO-TV that, “in this particular case, the student’s hairstyle did provide disruption to the classroom.” But Ethan’s grandmother doesn’t see much of a difference between a mohawk and a fade, the latter of which is worn by other, non-suspended students. “I could understand if it was colored, and if it stood up off longer of his head,” she said. “But I don’t see nothing wrong with this.”

Ho Sit Down: Atlanta Public School Superintendent Beverly Hall And 34 Others Indicted In Largest Academic Cheating Scandal In U.S. History!

THIS is the U.S. education system? No wonder the rest of the world is laughing at us. Atlanta Public School Superintendent Beverly Hall And Others Indicited In Cheating Scandal Via AJC The supposed transformation of Atlanta Public Schools overseen by former Superintendent Beverly Hall resulted from a criminal enterprise that victimized thousands of struggling students for years, authorities alleged Friday. Capping a series of investigations that spanned four years, a Fulton County grand jury indicted Hall and 34 others on charges that they conspired to cheat on federally mandated standardized tests from at least 2005 to 2010. Further, the grand jury charged, Hall, several top aides, principals and teachers engaged in the scheme for their own financial gain. And with investigators closing in, the jury said, Hall and others lied to cover up their crimes. Hall inculcated an atmosphere that encouraged using any means necessary to achieve test-score targets, the indictment said, and then “publicly misrepresented the academic performance of schools throughout APS.” Pressuring subordinates to produce targeted scores, the indictment said, “created an environment where achieving the desired end result was more important than the students’ education.” “This is nothing but pervasive and rank thuggery,” said Richard Hyde, one of the special investigators appointed in 2010 by then-Gov. Sonny Perdue to delve into what has become the largest academic cheating scandal in U.S. history. The indictment served as a resounding refutation of Hall’s assertions that Atlanta had found the secret formula that had long eluded educators elsewhere: how to get strong performances from poor, mostly minority students in decaying urban schools. For her efforts, Hall was named the national superintendent of the year in 2009. The teachers chopping down the students and the school officials cheating the system for a couple dollars, makes home school look like a GREAT alternative… Now Hall, 66, faces as much as 45 years in prison. Grand jurors recommended that a judge set her bond at $7.5 million. Authorities gave all the defendants until Tuesday to surrender. Along with Hall, the grand jury indicted four other former top administrators: Millicent Few, who ran the district’s human resources division, and area supervisors Sharon Davis-Williams, Tamara Cotman and Michael Pitts. B-b-but wait it gets worse! Beyond the criminal acts it alleged, the indictment revealed the human toll exacted by years of test-score manipulation, first reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2008. When a teacher at C.W. Hill Elementary complained about cheating by a colleague in 2005, Hall suspended the accused educator for 20 days. As for the whistle-blower, Hall fired her. Hall repeatedly ignored or disregarded reports of cheating or other questions about test scores. In 2006, Howard said, Atlanta resident Justina Collins was concerned when her daughter received the lowest score on a benchmark examination in her third-grade reading class — but then, somehow, exceeded reading standards on the CRCT. Collins managed to get an appointment with Hall, who told her there was no evidence her daughter needed help. She had, after all, done well on the CRCT. “Your daughter is the kind of person who tests well,” Collins said she was told. Now in the ninth grade, her daughter reads at a fifth-grade level. Bottom line, this beyotch ain’t isht and she, along with her accomplices, are about to pay the price. Peace, see ya later. Image via HullTruth

SMH: Missouri School Tells 13-Year-Old Student To Get Breast Reduction To Avoid Bullying

Does a school have the right to suggest this to a 6th grader? Via Fox2Now: A north St. Louis County mother claims her 13-year-old daughter is being harassed because of her breast size and was floored by the response she got after calling the school district. Tammie Jackson says her daughter Gabrielle is being sexually harassed because of her large breasts at Central Middle School in Moline Acres. She says the sixth grader has been dealing with bullying since last semester. Jackson called the Riverview Gardens School District to complain and was shocked by what she was told. “It makes me feel like now you are telling me it’s my fault, it’s God’s fault the way he made her. The lady on the phone said they could transfer my daughter and said her boobs were so large she will always get teased. And the only suggestion she had for me is to have my daughter get a breast reduction,” said Jackson. Jackson also says her 9-year-old son Elijah has bullying issues. He has a rare heart condition and she says kids make fun of his surgical scars, causing him to make suicidal comments. Jackson says all she wants is resolution to an issue she says can affect kids for the rest of their lives, “Talk with the kids. Let them know people’s bodies are changing, everybody is different, but God made us all great.” Jackson says the superintendent called and said they are working on a plan to resolve issues for both of her children. Thoughts?

Ivy League Freaks: Harvard University Approves Campus Wide Freaky-Deaky Sex Club For Students Called “Harvard College Munch”

Harvard University, home to the best and the brightest, now has an official club for the nastiest. Harvard University Approves Harvard College Munch Via HuffPo : Harvard College Munch for the BDSM set will be approved as a student organization on Friday, the Crimson reported. The expected go-ahead by the Committee on Student Life will entitle Munch to meet for lunch or dinner on campus, promote gatherings on school grounds and apply for grants from the school’s Drug and Alcohol Peer Advisors organization, the paper said. Once an informal gathering for like-minded individuals to discuss their proclivities in the bedroom without fear of being judged, Munch now has “institutional support” to provide reassurance for its members, its anonymous founder “Michael” said in the story. One member told the Observer that she had been hit with a riding crop, a belt and canes in a private Munch get-together. “Floggers are my favorite,” she said. There is historical precedent. The Iowa State University student government funded a bondage club in 2003, calling it a triumph for diversity, one publication reported. Now S&M clubs are increasingly popular at elite institutions as “50 Shades Of Grey” climbed the bestseller list, the Observer said. Columbia, Tufts, MIT and Yale have them, though the story did not say whether they were officially recognized. Assault cases from within some groups have sprung up as well, the paper said. But one Munch member told the Crimson that the club could provide a haven for those who engage in BDSM (bondage, discipline, sadism and masochism) after they have been scarred by sexual abuse or other trauma. Harvard spokesperson Jeff Neal told The Huffington Post that the college does not endorse the views or activities of any independent student organization. Harvard’s color is crimson. Looks like some students want to wear that color even when not wearing clothes. Gawker

Elsewhere In The World: Parents Watch In Horror As 12-Year-Old Boy Is Eaten By Crocodile!!!

Adults on the scene tried to help but it was too late…SMH. According to The Daily Mail … A 12-year-old boy was grabbed by a crocodile which swam off with the child in its mouth today in the second fatal attack within two weeks in Australia’s tropical Northern Territory. Although teams of police and rangers will continue the hunt for the youngster on Sunday they privately fear that the boy is well beyond help. ‘Inital reports suggest adults within the group tried to save the boy by spearing the animal, but the crocodile dragged the child out to deeper water,’ said police Superintendent Michael White. He said officers from an Aboriginal police station were remaining at the scene until dusk and would resume the search for the boy at first light on Sunday. Mr White said the tragedy once again highlighted the dangers of swimming in waterways in northern Australia. Today’s attack was a chilling reminder of the day earlier in November when the seven-year-old girl was snatched by a saltwater crocodile 210 miles east of Darwin, the Northern Territory’s capital. Police searching the waterhole shot dead a 10ft crocodile and an examination of the reptile revealed what were believed to be remains of the child in its stomach. Saltwater crocodiles, which can grow up to 25ft and weigh more than a ton, are plentiful in the Northern Territory and signs have been erected near waterways warning visitors to stay away from the water and river banks. Crocodiles are protected in the Northern Territory and their numbers have increased steadily, resulting in a number of attacks on people, One man writing to the Northern Territory News today said: ‘This has got to stop – there are too many crocs. ‘Of course we need to use common sense when in the bush, but please let’s have a sensible policy on the crocodile population.’ Is it the crocs fault or should folks not go for a dip in infested waters?? SMH: Black Kindergarten Student Says White Teacher Forced Her To Eat A Bagel Out Of The Trashcan

Black Kindergarten Student Says White Teacher Forced Her To Eat Bagel Out Of The Trash A white kindergarten teacher is getting a mouth full from the school board after she forced one of her black students to eat a bagel from the trashcan. via News One A 5-year-old girl has accused her kindergarten teacher of forcing her eat a bagel that she had tossed in the trash. The child’s miffed mother contacted police, reached out to child protective services and has fired a lawyer to deal with the teacher and her alleged act, the South Jersey Times reports. The child, Ke’Nya, who is black, attends the Deerfield Township Elementary School in New Jersey. The youngster told her mom, Candice Harris, that she threw away the bagel because she didn’t like the taste. The teacher, who is white and who has not been identified, walked over to the trash can, pulled out the bagel, then reportedly forced the child to eat it in front of all of her classmates. “The teacher admitted it to me right away in front of the superintendent,” Harris told the South Jersey Times. “The teacher told me that she wouldn’t have had a problem eating the bagel. She also refused to apologize. It wasn’t until I threatened to file a police report, hire an attorney and go to the News that the superintendent offered an apology. There was absolutely no sign of remorse from the teacher.” According to Harris, the teacher explained that the trash was only full of paper but the mother feels this fact does not justify her actions in any way. After reviewing the case, New Jersey State Police determined that the matter should remain within the confines of the Board of Education. “We looked into it and determined that it is not a criminal matter,” said Lt. Gary Catts. This mess is just unacceptable! We’re glad the girl’s mother was able to keep her cool inspite of this wench acting like she did nothing wrong though. Image via Shutterstock

Young Jeezy’s Manager Denies Rapper Was Arrested

Jeezy was reportedly taken into custody in the Bahamas over the weekend. By Hillary Crosley Young Jeezy (file) Photo: Jeffrey Ufberg/ Getty Images Young Jeezy ‘s manager, Demetrius Ellerbee, has denied a report that the rapper was arrested in the Bahamas on Saturday. “It’s not true,” Ellerbee told MTV News. According to Bahamian newspaper The Tribune , Jeezy was on his way to a show in an area of the island called New Providence when he was arrested by local officials. While the reason for his arrest was not specified, the paper says the rapper wasn’t held for very long. “He was here with us a short while. He passed through the station briefly on Saturday,” said Superintendent Ashton Greenslade, an officer at the Wulff Road station. “He was booked in here and taken to CDU (Central Detective Unit).” A Tribune source surmised that the Atlanta MC was simply “in the wrong place at the wrong time.” Elsewhere, Rick Ross recently responded to what he took as a dis from Young Jeezy in The Source magazine, stemming from the pair’s beef regarding Ross’ “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast).” Following the release of the Bawse’s single, Jeezy dropped his own “B.M.F.” freestyle and the pair have been on the outs since. “It’s not like I’m in Miami and you in New York,” said Ross. “We see each other. That’s the only issue I had. It was sideways. So I made a record, ‘Summer’s Mine,’ just to [let him know], if we gonna play that sport, let’s put it on the table like men. If it was just a freestyle that the world took the wrong way, leave it alone. That’s how I took it.” Related Artists Young Jeezy

President Obama’s Trip To Kalamazoo Central High School: Behind The Scenes

Race to the Top contest winners get an intimate gathering with the president before his commencement speech. By Gil Kaufman President Barack Obama greets graduates from Kalamazoo Central High School on Monday Photo: Mandel Ngan/ AFP/ Getty Images Before he took the stage Monday to give the commencement address at Kalamazoo Central High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan, President Obama took a few moments to meet with the school’s seniors to offer some special words of wisdom. As they screamed and held out their cell phones and digital cameras to get snaps of Obama, the president made his way around the auditorium and shook the hands of the young men and women he hopes will pave the way for a renewed focus on college education in America. “It was the most amazing thing ever that could ever happen to anybody,” one particularly enthusiastic student gushed, while another classmate chimed in, “That moment right there changed my life, just meeting the president.” At one point, a girl yelled, “Oh my God! I love you, Obama,” as the smiling president reached out with both hands and greeted the throng of students, who looked like they were breathlessly awaiting the arrival of a teen pop star, not the leader of the free world. And, wouldn’t you know it, seconds after pressing the flesh, they rushed to update their Facebook statuses and tweet about their presidential moment. “I’m not going to make a long speech now, because I’ve got a long speech later,” the president told the rowdy students in a smaller gathering in the school’s gym before the official commencement ceremony. “I wanted to come by in a less formal atmosphere to just let you know how incredibly proud I am, your parents are, your principal is, your teachers are, your superintendent is, of everything that you’ve done.” Though he jokily brushed off complaints that after a recent commencement address at the University of Michigan it seems the administration has a bias toward Michigan, Obama explained why he chose the school’s “We Are the Giants” video as the winner of his Race to the Top challenge. “The truth is that what we saw here going on was not only the community coming together with the promise, not only teachers and principals dedicating themselves, but we saw young people who were committed. And young people who didn’t buy into this whole notion that somehow public schools can’t be as good as private schools, that only kids from certain backgrounds can succeed in schools. You guys didn’t buy into all those stereotypes.” He praised their diversity, their ability to get together and build a better community, and he asked them to carry with them the confidence that “if you are working hard, if you keep your eyes on the prize, if you internalize a sense of excellence, if you carry with you the sense of community you got here in your hometown, there is nothing you can’t accomplish.” Get Schooled is a national program aimed at increasing high school and college graduation rates and promoting the importance of education, developed by Viacom in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. President Obama’s Trip To Kalamazoo Central High School: Behind The Scenes

Decision Makes School Chief Hated; Loved

Central Falls, Rhode Island (CNN) — Superintendent Frances Gallo combed the classrooms of embattled Central Falls High School. Teachers and students were gone for the day. Gallo was hunting for a particular item: an effigy of President Obama. She hoped the rumor of its existence wasn't true. Gallo had fired all the high school teachers just a month earlier, igniting an educational maelstrom in Rhode Island's smallest and poorest community while winning praise from the president. The teachers union lampooned her; hate mail flooded her inbox. For weeks, she'd prayed every morning for the soul of the man who wrote: “I wish cancer on your children and their children and that you live long enough to see them die.” It was one thing to take barbs from opponents — another thing altogether if the division was infecting classrooms. Teachers assured the superintendent that the school battle wasn't seeping into lesson plans. So, when CNN asked her about the rumor of the effigy, Gallo took it upon herself to get to the bottom of it. She entered the school in the dark of night Monday. She started her room-to-room sweep on the first floor. The first was clean, then the next and the next. Yet newspaper headlines about the controversy, Gallo says, were plastered nearly everywhere. What are the teachers doing? she thought. Most were local papers with banner headlines: “Teachers fired.” Others highlighted Obama's support of Gallo, an endorsement that turned an already tense situation into a firestorm. In this Democratic stronghold, teachers wondered: How could the president they supported turn his back on them? Some peeled Obama bumper stickers off their cars. Gallo knew Obama's endorsement would create further uproar. She just didn't know how bad it would get. She continued making her way through the school, clearing the first two floors. She was disheartened by the newspaper postings but relieved she hadn't found the offensive item. One floor to go. She climbed the steps and entered a classroom. There it was. “You couldn't miss it.” An Obama doll, about a foot tall, hung by its feet from the white board; the doll held a sign that said, “Fire Central Falls teachers,” she says. Recounting her discovery later, Gallo broke down in tears. A flood of emotions poured out, the raw toll of all that has transpired in recent weeks. When she confronted the teacher responsible, she says he responded that it was “a joke to him.” The teachers, she says, have “no idea the harm they're doing.” She thought of Obama's words: Students get only one shot at an education. “I've tried to explain this over and over again: The children here are very disturbed by the actions of their teachers, and they're torn apart because they also love them.” It's lonely being a voice for change. 'Miracles Happen Everyday' Central Falls is a town of more than 18,000 people — most of them Hispanic immigrants — living within 1.5 square miles. “Ripley's Believe It Or Not” once dubbed the town, about 10 minutes from Providence, the most densely populated in the nation. The school is an ornate brick building with decorative columns. A housing project backs up to the campus. A marquee outside the school reads: “Daily reflection on your efforts and outcomes will improve both.” Just a few blocks away, Gallo works from a modest building that looks as if it were once a home. A wall in the superintendent's office is decorated with Central Falls High T-shirts. “Don't talk trash … recycle it,” one says. Above her door is a sign: “Miracles Happen Everyday.” It keeps her grounded, she says, reminding her that “my kids are going to learn.” Gallo arrived in Central Falls in 2007, knowing a tough job loomed ahead. The school had already been designated one of the lowest-performing in Rhode Island. “I have never once looked away from a challenge or put children second,” she says. The school has been failing for the last seven years. Its graduation rate stands around 48 percent. Math proficiency is a paltry 7 percent. Reading scores have improved by 21 percentage points in the last two years, but still lag far behind with 55 percent able to read at grade level, according to school officials. Like the town's population, most of the 800 students at Central Falls are Hispanic. For many, English is a second language. Teachers say the population is so transient, the statistics are skewed: Dozens of students enroll as freshmen but move before their senior year. Those students get counted in the low graduation rate. It's a difficult environment in which to teach, teachers say, and they do their best. Gallo says union contracts, or “scar tissue,” are so thick and dense that instituting reform is difficult. Gallo says she didn't want to take the drastic measure of firing all 93 teachers, support staff and administrators. Yet her decision to do so instantly made her one of the boldest school administrators in the nation — loathed and loved, reviled and applauded. “I never anticipated this. Never,” Gallo says. On the wall behind her desk is a framed quotation: “Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, 'I will try again tomorrow.' ” added by: Crenshaw_Brothers
