REVIEW: Tough, Devastating The Invisible War Takes on Rape in the Military

It’s hard to know exactly how to review something like  The Invisible War , how to step back and look at it as a movie through the steady barrage of emotional devastation it presents. The stranger sitting next to me at my screening spent the latter half of the runtime sobbing into a fistful of tissues, and I couldn’t blame her — the film, the latest documentary from the Oscar-nominated Kirby Dick ( Outrage, This Film Is Not Yet Rated ) presents a sickening chorus of accounts not just of rape but of institutional betrayal, of a system that’s utterly failed to protect or serve those who’ve joined it. The Invisible War is brutal in the cases of sexual assaults in the U.S. military it runs down, but it’s even harder to take when it then explores the lack of follow-up, the victim blaming and self-serving protection of those in charge and the status quo. Again and again, the interviewees in the film — who are mostly but not entirely women — tell stories of enlisting out of idealism, patriotism or family tradition, thinking they’ve found a place for themselves, only to realize that for some of their colleagues, they’ll only ever be a target, and for others, they’re going to be held responsible for their own safety and taken to task otherwise. The film offers a variety of stories from military rape victims from different branches of the armed forces, including the Coast Guard and the Marines. Disturbing patterns quickly emerge. A woman ends up on assignment somewhere where she’s usually outnumbered. She gets harassed; she gets raped. She reports what happened to her superior officer, who either warns her off, or is a friend of the attacker, or would just rather the problem go away. And usually, at least for the perpetrator, it does — an appallingly low number of cases actually get brought to any kind of justice. Dick skillfully weaves together interviews with presentations of some damning numbers — like the fact that 20% of active-duty female soldiers get sexually assaulted, and the military itself acknowledges that a lot of cases are underreported because accusations of rape are so discouraged and can also permanently damage careers. To listen to someone talk about how she ended up getting charged with adultery and conduct unbecoming an officer after being assaulted by a married colleague is to feel that these structures aren’t just fundamentally flawed, they actually encourage this kind of horrific behavior because there are no consequences. The Invisible War follows a few of its interviewees in their current, non-military lives. One, Kori Cioca, is a young mother trying to get the VA to help her with the surgery she needs for her facial injury — she had her jaw broken by someone with whom she was serving in the Coast Guard, a man who raped her. Struggling with PTSD and in constant pain, she’s able to eat only soft food and is told she hasn’t served long enough to be covered because she left after the assault. Navy Seaman Trina McDonald was drugged and raped repeatedly while on a remote assignment in Alaska — the men attacking her were the military police to whom she’d need to report an assault. Now married to a woman and living in Seattle, she still struggles with trauma that, for a while, left her addicted and homeless. There are others — Marine Ariana Klay was told she must have wanted the harassment she received because she wore her military-standard uniform skirt. Elle Helmer, another Marine, and Navy Seaman Hannah Sewell had their rape kits “lost.” The film delves into what’s been done to change the present military culture and comes up with some laughable in-house poster and video campaigns that feature a woman soldier being angrily quizzed about why she’s out by herself and another that urges guys to “ask her when she’s sober,” suggesting that the problem in the military’s eyes is drunk girls with morning-after regrets rather than the kinds of attacks described by the interviewees on screen. The Invisible War also suggests, though doesn’t pursue the way perhaps it should have, that the military has a higher percentage of sexual predators than the outside world — because they’re drawn to the macho imagery with which enlistment is sold. The film certainly offers a solid case for military service being a great environment for someone with those inclinations, because there’s little recourse for a victim to report what happened outside of going to his or her commanding officer (one spokesperson earnestly suggests one could also write to one’s congressperson as a secondary option), and that goes against military sentiment of solidarity and strength through suffering. But solidarity’s worth nothing if you’re not actually a part of the whole, and both the accounts on display here and the way so many of the interviewees conclude that, initial positive experiences aside, they couldn’t recommend that anyone serve, show just how warped the system is and how many scars it’s left. The Invisible War   might be best judged as a piece of activism, in which case it’s already succeeding — after seeing the film in April, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta took the responsibility for sexual assault investigations away from commanding officers and put them in the hands of higher-ranking officials. It’s a step in the right direction, but this doc makes it clear there are many more serious changes to be made. Follow Alison Willmore on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Phillip Phillips Has Kidney Surgery

‘Surgery went well,’ a rep for the ‘American Idol’ winner said of the kidney procedure. By Gil Kaufman Phillip Phillips Photo: Getty Images Just days after a source said “American Idol” champ Phillip Phillips
 was going to skip
much-needed kidney surgery, a spokesperson for the 21-year-old singer said he underwent a procedure on Wednesday and is now resting comfortably. “Surgery went well,” the a spokesperson told MTV News about the reportedly six-plus hour surgery in Los Angeles to remove kidney stones so large Entertainment Weekly reported that there was “no chance” he could have passed them on his own. “He’s resting and will be ready for the ‘Idol’ tour kickoff in July!” the rep added about the 45-day summer outing slated to launch on July 6 in Detroit. When you think about it, it’s pretty incredible that Phillip Phillips was able to not only hang in, but win “American Idol” season 11 given the pain he was in from chronic kidney problems
. The singer struggled with kidney stones during his entire run on “Idol,” and had a stent implanted in one of his kidneys in March to prevent blockage, and allow him to keep competing on the show. Phillips reportedly went through eight surgeries from the time “Idol” began in January until the May23 finale, but this week’s procedure could help alleviate a lot of the pain he’s been suffering through according to a leading nephrologist. “Kidney stones are fairly common … occurring in more than 10 percent of men and 5 of women and once they’ve formed one, they’re likely to form another,” said Dr. Gary C. Curhan a professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Editor-in-Chief of the “Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.” Typically made up of calcium, Curhan, who is not treating Phillips and has no firsthand knowledge of his case, said stones can be formed for a number of reasons, including low fluid intake (which leads to concentrated urine), dietary factors, certain medications and, in some cases, an anatomical predisposition to forming them. He also noted that the stent is a temporary measure and is typically very painful, but allows urine to continue flowing until the swelling in the ureter (the tubes that move urine from the kidneys to the bladder) goes down. Phillips was slated to have reconstructive kidney surgery right after his “Idol” win, but, according to TMZ the procedure was postponed because of a bad sinus infection that triggered a high fever. TMZ also reported earlier that Phillips suffers from a serious congenital kidney condition that produces stones so large they cannot pass and which has seriously damaged his right kidney. Curhan, who spoke to MTV News before Phillips had the surgery, said most stones will pass on their own, but in doing so will cause a huge amount of pain. Others are too big and require removal by a urologist, either by breaking them up with shockwaves or using a surgical tools to break them up internally or pull them out. He noted that it’s rare for stones to form quickly, as they normally take months, or years and multiple surgeries in a short period of time is also unusual. Cases where stones continually form and are hard to pass are typically caused by an anatomical difference that causes the kidney to drain urine improperly, which predisposes the patient to stones. “If aggressive therapy is not working, you have to have surgery to change the anatomy to help it drain better,” he said. “There is risk involved in the procedure [surgery], but not treating it can also cause risk,” he said. John Mayer Proud Of ‘Giant Evolutionary Steps’ On Born And Raised

At intimate New York listening party, singer says new album ‘widened the expectations of what I can do.’ By Jocelyn Vena John Mayer Photo: Mark Sullivan/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Fans and industry folks gathered at the famed Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village on Wednesday night to get an advanced listen to John Mayer ‘s new album, the country-fried, introspective Born and Raised. Before the album even played, Neil Young songs blasted through the hallowed halls of the studio. Given Mayer’s vibe on Born and Raised, which pays homage to the Young sound of the 1970s, it all made sense. When Mayer’s album was eventually put on, it was an easy transition from Young’s jangly guitar and harmonica to Mayer’s own on the album, out Tuesday. The album was recorded at Electric Lady Studios, and the Big Apple is referenced on some tracks, as on many Mayer songs before. “Records are pure reflections,” Mayer told the room. “I’m so proud it’s out. The finish line is so far off [when you’re making the record].” In recent years, Mayer has been through it all. After going TMI crazy in the press in 2010 , he has shied away from media attention. Some of that had to do with the fact that he had surgery on his vocal cords in late 2011. In fact, he still needs to go through another surgery to correct the problem. But he said he plans to record a new album this summer, regardless. “If you’re lucky, you get to make giant evolutionary steps from your first record, so I was able to do that. And you guys, I think, you’re able to come along with that step and be psyched about that evolution and I’m excited to even go further now and start coming up with melodies you haven’t heard yet,” he said, referencing his “Your Body Is a Wonderland” days on his 2001 debut, Room for Squares. During the chat he explained that every song on this album is his favorite, for perhaps the first time in his career, adding that they “widened the expectations of what I can do.” Additionally, after having to cancel his 2012 spring trek , Mayer confirmed he want to hit the road in spring 2013 “and have two records to pull from. … I think I can cheat time a little bit because as you know, I try to cheat time all the time. So I think we can all catch up so that a year from now there’s two records. It’ll be like Born and Raised part two because there’s certain things I want to keep doing.” Related Artists John Mayer

Adam Yauch’s Journey From Cancer Diagnosis To Rock Hall

Beastie Boys rapper kept his fans in the loop over the past three years since he was diagnosed. By John Mitchell The Beastie Boys’ Adam “MCA” Yauch Photo: Getty Images Adam Yauch, one of the founding members of the pioneering hip-hop trio the Beastie Boys, died Friday (May 4) at the age of 47 following a long battle with throat cancer. Yauch’s death has rattled the music world to its core, with tributes already pouring in from the likes of Justin Timberlake and Russell Simmons to fellow hip-hop pioneers Run-DMC. Since his 2009 cancer diagnosis, Yauch has stayed away from the public eye, often communicating with concerned fans through email, but during a period of remission, the Grammy-winning rapper stepped forward with his bandmates to release what would be his final album with the Beastie Boys, Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, and even won an MTV Video Music Award for his direction of the Beasties’ “Make Some Noise” video. Though he fought his battle with cancer privately, Yauch, a practicing Buddhist, always maintained a tight connection with the Beasties’ fans and continued to work despite the difficult surgeries and treatments he faced. Below, we’ve taken a look back at the last few years of Yauch’s life to showcase the one-of-a-kind music legend’s perseverance in the face of such a difficult battle. July 20, 2009 : Yauch announced in a video posted to BeastieBoys.com that he’d been diagnosed with cancer of the parotid gland, a salivary gland in the throat. “The reason we’re here talking is because I have some pretty heavy news to say,” Yauch said in the video. “About two months ago, I started feeling this little lump in my throat, like what you would feel if you have swollen glands or something like that, and so I didn’t really think it was anything. … They did tests, and I actually have a form of cancer in the gland that’s over here, in the parotid gland, and it’s also in the lymph node right in that area.” Yauch had surgery to remove the tumor and began radiation that same week. Due to his treatment, the Beastie Boys were forced to cancel their summer touring plans, including headlining gigs at the All Points West Festival and Lollapalooza, in addition to delaying the release of their album Hot Sauce Committee: Part One. The album was finally released in May 2011 under the title Hot Sauce Committee Part Two with a slightly altered track list. August 5, 2009 : In an email to subscribers of the Beastie Boys’ newsletter with the subject line “What I did over my summer vacation,” Yauch provided fans with an update on his treatment , writing, “So I’m about a week-and-a-half out of surgery now and rapidly recovering from it. … My neck and jaw are still pretty stiff from the surgery, but it gets better every day. Had the stitches out this past Monday … so things are moving along.” October 7, 2009 : In another email to fans, Yauch wrote about his trip to Dharamsala, India, where he had traveled to see some Tibetan doctors and ended up attending a three-day seminar taught by Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. “I’m feeling healthy, strong and hopeful that I’ve beaten this thing, but of course time will tell,” Yauch said in the letter. March 9, 2010 : Yauch attended the Independent Spirit Awards and told reporters that while his recovery had been difficult, he was ready to get back to work . “I feel better. It was touch-and-go there for a while, but I am finally getting my energy back,” Yauch said. “It was really disappointing to have to hold the record and postpone the tour, but doctor’s orders. We may or may not [release the album], depending on how my health is come September. We want to, but we have to play it by ear.” September 28, 2010 : The Beastie Boys receive their first nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. January 21, 2011 : “Fight for Your Right Revisited,” a short film directed by Yauch that picks up immediately after the events of the Beastie Boys’ classic “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)” video, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival . In the film, Elijah Wood plays Ad-Rock, Seth Rogen portrays Mike D and Danny McBride slips on Yauch’s classic leather jacket to become MCA. “Revisited” begins with the Beasties crawling out of the trashed apartment while the original ’87 tune plays in the background. They head down the stairs and immediately run into the parents of the kids whose party they crashed, played by Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci. April 20, 2011 : The video for “Make Some Noise,” the lead single from the Beastie Boys’ Hot Sauce Committee Part Two, debuted, marking the band’s first new musical release since Yauch’s cancer diagnosis. The clip was cut from Yauch’s “Fight for your Right Revisited” short film. May 3, 2011 : Hot Sauce Committee Part Two hits stores nearly two years after the initial planned release of the project. It’s still unclear which songs from the unreleased Part One made it onto the sequel. The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard albums chart. July 20, 2011 : “Make Some Noise” scores MTV Video Music Award nominations for Video of the Year and Best Direction for Yauch. The nominations brought the Beastie Boys’ career total VMA noms to eight, which include a Video of the Year nod for the Beasties’ 1994 Spike Jonze-directed classic “Sabotage.” August 28, 2011 : Yauch wins the VMA for Best Direction for “Make Some Noise.” The win is the third for the group, which previously scored a 1999 VMA for Best Hip-Hop Video for “Intergalactic” and the Video Vanguard Award in 1998. December 17, 2011 : It is announced that the Beastie Boys will officially be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. April 14, 2012 : The Beastie Boys become the third hip-hop act inducted into the Rock Hall during a ceremony at the Cleveland, Ohio, museum. Though he was unable to attend the ceremony because he was receiving treatment for a recurrence of his cancer, his bandmates paid him a warm tribute and read a letter written by Yauch to the crowd. Fellow inductees the Red Hot Chili Peppers dedicated their performance at the ceremony to Yauch. John Mayer Cancels Tour

Vocal issues are to blame, but singer/songwriter still plans to release his Born and Raised album on May 22. By Jocelyn Vena John Mayer Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images John Mayer ‘s road to recovery has hit a snag. Just weeks after revealing his dates for a spring tour , the singer announced Friday (March 9) that he’d no longer be able to hit the road due to a new spate of vocal problems. “During rehearsal on Tuesday, it came to mind that I should see my throat doctor because something didn’t feel/sound right. I went in for a visit on Wednesday and a scope of my vocal cords revealed that the granuloma has grown back where it had mostly healed. This is bad news,” he wrote on his Tumblr . “Because of this, I have no choice but to take an indefinite break from live performing. Though there will be a day when all of this will be behind me, it will sideline me for a longer period of time than I care to have you count down.” He then went on to describe what the condition is, writing, “A granuloma forms and continues to snowball because it’s in a spot where the vocal cords hit together and there’s no way to really give it a chance to heal without a good stretch of time and some pretty intensive treatment. In short, it’s one giant pain in the ass.” For now, he says his album, Born and Raised, is still slated to be released May 22. Earlier this month he released his first single, “Shadow Days.” “I’m pretty emotionally burnt out at the moment, but please know how hard I tried to resolve this and how disappointed I am that I can’t perform this record yet. I’m completely bummed, especially for all of you who started making plans to see a show. Nothing feels worse than having to break the stage down before the performance, and I mean nothing,” he wrote. “I love this band you were going to hear, I love the guys and girls I work with, and the only thing that stops me from devolving into a puddle of tears is knowing that it’s a long life, and the greatest gift in the world is being able to create music no matter what the circumstances. So these are the new circumstances, and I’ll find a way to make it mean something. That’s all you can ever do.” In the post, he also revealed that while Born and Raised has yet to drop, he feels inspired to start work on his next album — but only after he seeks treatment for his vocal condition. “I’m going to begin writing the next album very soon,” he wrote. “I feel really vibrant as a writer at the moment and there’s no reason not to begin the next album project in the time I would have been touring. Somewhere in all of this is another surgery and a very long chemically-imposed period of silence, so I hope you’ll understand that I have to really pick that date carefully.” Share your well-wishes for John’s vocal recovery in the comments below. Janet Jackson Turns Down The X Factor

She’s flattered, but she’s out of the running. Janet Jackson has put the rumors – which she sort of encouraged initially by hemming and hawing during an interview with Anderson Cooper – of her involvement with The X Factor to rest. In a statement, Janet says she’s “very flattered that X Factor let me know I was being considered for next season, but it just wouldn’t be possible.” Why not? What’s on tap for the artist? She is committed to her Number Ones Up Close and Personal Tour and will be starring in an upcoming Tyler Perry movie. Does this mean The X Factor will seriously consider Britney Spears as a judge ? Let’s hope so! [Photo: WENN.com]

Did Lindsay Lohan Get Plastic Surgery?

A look at Lindsay Lohan’s face reveals some pretty drastic changes in recent years. But did the actress get plastic surgery, or is it just a result of age? The 25-year-old’s new look has sparked speculation from experts that she’s substituted an alcohol and drug addiction for a plastic surgery addiction. “Unfortunately it looks like it,” plastic surgeon Dr. Anthony Youn, who hasn’t treated her, said, adding that when he looks at Lindsay Lohan photos : “She appears to have a classic, over-plumped pillow face. Her cheeks look like she’s storing nuts. I suspect she’s undergone multiple injections of filler.” Ouch. If you look at Lindsay on the Today show this week (above right) and back in her Mean Girls heyday (left), though, the difference is quite strong. No one’s as fresh-faced as they were 5-6 years earlier, but aging doesn’t just change the general contours of one’s face, does it? You tell us below: What do you think? Did Lindsay get work done?

Towanda Braxton Dishes On Her Relationship & Sister Toni’s Health *EXCLUSIVE*

View original post here:

We were introduced to Towanda Braxton via “Braxton Family Values,” a reality show showcasing songstress Toni Braxton and her four sisters who have proven to be closer than a tight knitted scarf. Trina, Towanda, Tamar, Toni and Tracey, let us into their lives filled of real world problems such as: relationship woes, family issues and the hunger for stardom. Each sister is different and as we have come to see, Towanda is the peacemaker between all the ladies. We spoke to the wife and mother of two about her troubled marriage, sister Toni’s health and some girly hair care tips we can file in our “good to know” box! HB: How’s your family doing? last time we checked you were living with Trina. We’re still out to lunch. It’s like I’m still trying to figure it out with Andre. The basis of it all is that we are trying to be here for our children because that’s what matters. Our lives don’t matter anymore what matters is the welfare of children, so we are trying to figure it out for them. HB: Has your sister Trina’s relationship improved in your eyes? They are definitely communicating better, I think one time I said even on the show that when you have a another family in your household it forces you to use your words and talk to each other and not at each other. They were arguing at each other. I guess by me and my family being there it did kind of help their relationship. HB: What advice do you give to another woman who is in the same position as you and your husband? I usually say if its fixable than try to fix it. You have to try and exasperate all of your options. That’s what I’m trying to do and I’m the type of person that doesn’t like to give up and marriage isn’t easy! Unless he’s beating your head in, it’s fixable and it depends on what your breaking point is. Some women’s breaking point is cheating… My breaking point is someone bashing my head in. You ain’t gon’ bash me in my head! HB: You come across as the peacemaker, which sister is the hardest to deal with? T-A-M-A-R…she is the baby, we have spoiled her rotten and we’ve allowed her to get away with so much. and now we’re like wait a minute, we have children we cant do this anymore, our children are watching. Now it’s time for everyone to set boundaries. HB: Tamar & Vince are getting their own show, your feelings about it? Im excited for Tamar and Vince, I can’t wait to see it because it’s going to be a different dynamic. Tamar is one way with her sisters and another way with Vince. So I think it’s another side of her everyone will see. She’s a bit shy as-a-matter-of -fact when she meets other people. Around us she can be herself but around other people she’s a little shy. HB: Is Vince doing OK? he was reportedly sick … He’s good, he’s at home now! HB: How’s Toni doing? she was recently admitted into the hospital. She’s good, whenever she has a small flare she likes to go to the hospital get some tests and it’s good to do that before she gets a full flare-up. Lupus attacks anything, it makes you fatigue. This is how she describes it ‘It’s like having the worst flu of your life,’ your body aches, you can’t get out of bed, you don’t want to do anything. That’s basically how it is with a full flare-up. HB: What was your reaction when you first found out about her Lupus? Since I was working with Toni, I was kind of privy to a lot of little things. My thing was, of course I was sad, I tried to look at the silver lining, like at least it isn’t attacking your main organs like your heart meaning that she could have a heart-attack at anytime. Since you’ve been liberated of your personal assistant duties, how has life been? I don’t know quite how to act! All this time on my hands. I’ve been doing acting clases with Terry Vaughn. I went on an audition and I got the part! To be honest, i don’t know about this part though. It’s in a play. I think in a few years I will have an Emmy award and an Oscar! HB: Growing up, what was one thing you mother always taught you? That there’s no one greater than you than god! HB: How do you maintain your tresses? I caught a lot of flack for wearing pig tails, let’s be honest first season you don’t get a huge budget so you kind of have to figure it out yourself. I use a lot of mousse and black gel, the pro gel– keep them edges down. I wear weaves, lots of weaves…underneath I’m natural. I was always the girl that never wanted to go natural, My hair is very soft and fine so I have to be careful how much heat I put on my hair. Weaves are great for me all of my hair is braiding underneath . 5 Quick Questions: What’s in your bag? Lipgloss and my wallet. Boxers or Briefs: Boxers Last time you cried: When my mother in law passed in 2007 Bags vs. Shoes? That’s hard [long pause]shoes… If you had to get a tattoo at gunpoint what would it be? Droopy! The actual character because people say I’m so nonchalant about things but you know what ‘I’m Happy’ Toni Braxton Admitted To Hospital Tamar’s “Hood Rat Pop,” Toni’s Surgery & Towanda’s Big Secret on “Braxton Family Values” [RECAP]
