However, if it doesn't work, go to: gallup.com , and look for Poll Number 140762 _______________ June 16, 2010 Many Americans Say Gulf Beaches, Wildlife Will Never Recover Nearly all agree that full recovery will take 10 years or more by Lydia Saad PRINCETON, NJ — From what they have seen of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill rolling onto America's shores, nearly half of Americans (49%) believe that at least some of the affected beaches will never recover. Even more, 59%, believe normal levels for some animal species will never be restored. Predicted Timeline for Full Recovery of Gulf Shore Beaches, Wildlife (Including Fish and Birds) More generally, Americans foresee a very long road to recovery for both the U.S. beaches and wildlife affected by the BP oil spill. The vast majority believe it will be a decade or more, if at all, before either aspect of the Gulf environment is back to normal; few think a full recovery will happen within four years. Separately, Americans broadly agree that the oil spill will negatively affect the U.S. economy and the U.S. consumer. Roughly four in five believe the overall U.S. economy will be hurt, that gas prices will go up, and that food prices will increase. Possible Economic Effects of Gulf Oil Spill Women More Pessimistic Than Men About Undoing Oil Damage The most striking subgroup differences in views about the oil spill's impact are by gender, with women much more pessimistic than men. (Gallup has previously found women to be more concerned than men about environmental matters.) Sixty percent of women, compared with 37% of men, believe some Gulf beaches will never recover — a 23 percentage-point gap. Additionally, there is a 13-point gap between men's and women's perceptions of whether the affected wildlife will fully recover. Predicted Timeline for Recovery of Beaches Predicted Timeline for Recovery of Wildlife Women are also more likely than men to believe that gas prices will increase (83% vs. 74%), and that the U.S. economy in general will be hurt (88% vs. 78%). Bottom Line In his remarks when visiting the Gulf shoreline this week, as well as in his Oval Office address Tuesday night, President Obama has stressed the need for a long-term commitment to the oil spill cleanup. Americans may be getting impatient with BP and the federal government for not doing enough to cap the gushing oil rig and contain the leaked oil, but it appears they are resigned to a lengthy process to restore the beaches and wildlife, with perhaps limited success. Survey Methods Results for this USA Today/Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted June 11-13, 2010, with a random sample of 1,014 adults, aged 18 and older, living in the continental U.S., selected using random-digit-dial sampling. For results based on the total sample of national adults, one can say with 95% confidence that the maximum margin of sampling error is

Why Your Grandpa Is On Facebook

“Old people” on Facebook: They couldn’t beat it, so they joined it. But why? And how did they hear about social media in the first place? They can’t all be simply stalking their younger relatives, can they? A new study from the AARP — that’s the American Association of Retired Persons — shows that baby boomers in the 50-years-old-or-better age bracket are cool with the Internet (Internet), down with Facebook, hip to the iPad and not just using the web to spy on their kids and grandkids. The AARP spent some time last month interviewing 1,360 adults over the phone. They found that more than a quarter (27%) of Americans age 50 and older use social networks. Facebook is the most popular — in fact, 23% of all survey respondents said they preferred it to sites such as MySpace (MySpace), LinkedIn (LinkedIn) and Twitter. Another study earlier this year from eMarketer showed that boomers and seniors were flocking to Facebook, again showing a strong preference for this site over Twitter and MySpace — all this in spite of the fact that another survey showed older Americans reported hearing an awful lot of bad news and media coverage about Facebook. When it comes to general web surfing, 49% of respondents between the ages of 50 and 64 and 40% of all adults age 50 and older, said they consider themselves extremely or very comfortable using the Internet. In other words, we’re very close to seeing the majority of senior citizens embracing the web as a content medium and communication tool. As for discovery of social services, however, it seems the young folks are to blame for spreading word of Facebook to more venerable generations. Around 47% of AARP’s respondents had heard of social networking from a family member other than their spouse, and of those, 70% were tipped off by a child or grandchild. The overwhelming majority of these boomers are using the social web — at least to some degree — to keep in touch with family members. Almost three quarters of AARP’s survey group said they’re connected online to relatives other than children and grandchildren, 62% are connected to their children, and 36% are connected to grandchildren, as well. And don’t forget, many of these older Americans probably have the loot to spend on high-tech gadgets, if they so choose. Of the 1,360 respondents, 83% knew about the iPad, and 11-14% said they planned to purchase one. Two percent said they’d already bought an iPad. If you’re in the age-50-and-older crowd, do you use the social web, and why? Is keeping in touch with family an important part of your online routine? added by: TimALoftis

Double The Oil, Double The Problems

It’s a doubly-bad day for news regarding the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico: Scientists have doubled their estimates of the amount of barrels flowing into the Gulf every day, and BP announced it will not have the oil leak sealed before August. New estimates put the a mount of barrels of oil spilling into the Gulf of Mexico at 40,000, doubling previous estimates of 20,000, with the total now figuring between 42 million and 84 million barrels of oil leaked since the spill began on April 20th. —JCL The LA Times: Government scientists said Thursday that as many as 40,000 barrels of oil have been flowing daily from the blown-out BP well, doubling earlier estimates and greatly expanding the scope of what is already the largest spill in U.S. history. The new figures could mean 42 million to 84 million gallons of oil have leaked into the Gulf of Mexico since the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on the night of April 20 — with the lowest estimate nearly four times the size of the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill. The flow estimates were released by Marcia McNutt, director of the U.S. Geological Survey, and do not count any increases that may have occurred since the cutting of the well’s riser pipe, a step that was expected to boost the flow. AP poll: Dems likely to retain majority…barely

People want Democrats to control Congress after this fall's elections, a shift from April, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll released Saturday. But the margin is thin and there's a flashing yellow light for incumbents of both parties: Only about one-third want their own lawmakers re-elected. The tenuous 45 percent to 40 percent preference for a Democratic Congress reverses the finding a month ago on the same question: 44 percent for Republicans and 41 percent for Democrats. The new readout came as the economy continued showing signs of improvement and the tumultuous battle over the health care law that President Barack Obama finally signed in March faded into the background. “To the extent that Democrats can focus on job creation rather than health care, they tend to do better,” said Jack Pitney, a political scientist at California's Claremont McKenna College. Democrats hold a 254-177 majority over Republicans in the House, with four vacancies, while Democrats control 59 of the Senate's 100 seats, counting support from two independents. Despite those disadvantages, the GOP has gained political momentum in recent months and its leaders hope to win control of at least one chamber of Congress this November. Compared with the last AP-GfK poll in April, the survey showed Republicans losing some support among married women, a key component of many GOP victories. Democrats picked up ground among young and rural voters. More…. added by: SleepDirt

Mayweather vs Mosley Fight Prediction

Boxing fans around the whole world are really excited to see who will win in the much anticipated WBA Welterweight match of Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley. I bet this will be another historic fight that everyone will never ever forget. So Who are you picking? Shane or Floyd? Based on the results that we’ve gathered from our survey, Floyd Mayweather will win this Welterweight match on the 12th round via unanimous decision. Others said that Shane Mosley will knock out Floyd Mayweather Jr on the 11th round of this Welterweight match. But I think this prediction is a joke, because Floyd Mayweather will be really humiliated if he will be defeated by knockout. Some predicted that Shane Mosley will be defeated by Floyd Mayweather via knock out on the 8th round. This is likely to happen, but we can say that this prediction can be 100% accurate. Floyd Mayweather has prepared for this match and many said that he has a technique not yet unseen in his previous fights to defeat Mosley. His speed, agility, and strength is incomparable to Shane Mosley. Floyd Mayweather Jr and Shane Mosley are ranked second and third respectively as the world’s best Welterweight boxers. Ranked first is Manny Pacquiao. Let’s see who wins this May 1, 2010 as these powerful guys will clash in the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Let’s don’t forget to watch Mayweather vs Mosley Live Stream . Mayweather vs Mosley Fight Prediction is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading
