Malin Åkerman on Romantics, Romcoms and Her Surprising Truth About Improv

When we all last heard from Malin Åkerman, she was preparing for the hometown premiere of her fiery drama The Bang Bang Club in Toronto. But for at least one more weekend, she’s keeping an eye on her darling The Romantics as it expands into limited wide release. The ensemble film features the Swedish-Canadian actress as Tripler, one of several college pals reuniting for the marriage of Lila (Anna Paquin) and Tom (Josh Duhamel) — over the simmering objection of Tom’s ex Laura (Katie Holmes).

Sara Bareilles Tops Billboard 200 Albums Chart

Eminem’s Recovery moves back up from #3 to #2. By Gil Kaufman Sara Bareilles’ Kaleidoscope Heart Photo: Epic Three months into its epic chart run, Eminem ‘s Recovery continues to provide stiff competition to chart newcomers. In one of the most modest #1 debut showings of the year, “Love Song” singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles will top the Billboard 200 next week with Kaleidoscope Heart, which moved 90,000 copies to snatch the pole position, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. That easily bested the #45 debut of her first album, 2007’s Little Voice, and it was just enough to keep Slim Shady at bay. The resurgent rapper moved up a notch to #2 as Recovery sold another 81,000 copies to push it over the 2.5 million mark. If sales continue at this pace, Em could soon surpass the year’s top-selling album to date, Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now, which has racked up 2.6 million in sales over the past eight months. Also debuting in the top 10 next week are the latest from Slipknot side group Stone Sour with Audio Secrecy (#6, 46,000); indie band Interpol , whose self-titled fourth album moved 38,000 copies (#7); and Florida rockers Anberlin , who hit #9 with Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place (31,000). The rest of the top 10: Now 35 (#3, 63,000); Katy Perry , Teenage Dream (#4, 59,000); Disturbed , Asylum (#5, 57,000, down 68 percent from last week’s #1 debut); Justin Bieber , My World 2.0 (#8, 35,000); and the Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam soundtrack (#10, 31,000). Fantasia ‘s comeback, Back to Me, continued its slide down the charts. It shed six more spots in week three to land at #11 on sales of 29,000, during a slow week when most of the top 20 saw double-digit sales drop-offs. Further down the line, rock icon Jerry Lee Lewis hits #30 with Mean Old Man (11,000), Minneapolis rap crew Atmosphere land at #38 with the EP compilation To All My Friends, Blood Makes the Blade Holy (9,000), and Swedish dance machine Robyn comes in at #41 with Body Talk Pt. 2 (8,000). It was virtually the same story on the iTunes albums chart, as Bareilles took the top spot, followed by Eminem, Disturbed, Perry, Mumford & Sons’ Sigh No More, Atmosphere, Interpol, Stone Sour, Anberlin and “Camp Rock.” The iTunes singles chart was also mostly unchanged, with Bruno Mars taking the top spot with “Just the Way You Are,” followed by Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” Nelly’s “Just a Dream,” Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite,” Em’s “Lose Yourself,” Enrique Iglesias’ “I Like It” and Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love.” iTunes doesn’t provide sales figures, but you can be sure Flo Rida was glad to see that his new single, “Club Can’t Handle Me,” came in at #8, followed by Ke$ha’s “Take It Off” and B.o.B’s “Magic.” Bareilles will probably have a short time in the sun, as next week brings the chart debut of Linkin Park ‘s A Thousand Suns , Trey Songz ‘s Passion, Pain & Pleasure, Killers singer Brandon Flowers ‘ debut solo album, Flamingo, and Weezer ‘s indie debut, Hurley , as well as new albums from Led Zeppelin legend Robert Plant and insurgent country star Jamey Johnson . John Mayer Quits Twitter

He had amassed more than 3.7 million followers on the site. By Kelley L. Carter John Mayer Photo: Mat Szwajkos/ Getty Images John Mayer is losing a lot of friends. A spokesperson for the singer said Mayer has shut down his Twitter account now that he’s done with his Battle Studies Tour. He continues to communicate with his fans via his blog , the rep said. The singer had amassed more than 3.7 million followers on Twitter. His exit from the micro-blogging site comes months after he dealt with a bit of controversy. Back in February, Mayer had an interview with Playboy in which he talked about intimate relations with former girlfriend Jessica Simpson and used the N-word. The whole issue became a hot Twitter topic, and Mayer tweeted an apology to his followers: “Re: using the ‘N word’ in an interview: I am sorry that I used the word. And it’s such a shame that I did because the point I was trying to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself. It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it, because I realize that there’s no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged. “And while I’m using today for looking at myself under harsh light, I think it’s time to stop trying to be so raw in interviews. … It started as an attempt to not let the waves of criticism get to me, but it’s gotten out of hand and I’ve created somewhat of a monster.” He also tweeted: ” I wanted to be a blues guitar player. And a singer. And a songwriter. Not a shock jock. I don’t have the stomach for it. Again, because I don’t want anyone to think I’m equivocating: I should have never said the word and I will never say it again.” Will you miss John Mayer on Twitter? Let us know in the comments. Let Me In and the Hows and Whys of the Remake

When it was announced a few years back that a U.S. remake of the Swedish preteen-vampire film (and indie hit) Let the Right One In was in the works, fans of the original let out a collective groan. Leave it to stupid Americans to refuse to read subtitles! The remake — to be made by Matt Reeves, director of the 2008 Cloverfield, as well as several episodes of Felicity — would certainly trample on the delicacy of this small Swedish gem.

Tom Hanks Calls Sandra Bullock ‘A Magnificent Actress’

Actor says he is ‘lucky’ to work with his ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’ co-star. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner Tom Hanks at the HBO Emmy afterparty on Sunday Photo: Jason LaVeris/ FilmMagic Tom Hanks is very excited to get work started on the film adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s second novel, “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.” Why? Well, aside from the story — which follows a nine-year-old boy in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks — he can’t wait to work with fellow Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock. “Well I have left a voicemail for Sandra … Sandy. Can I call her Sandy? I can call her Sandy. I think she called the office back, but I hope to talk to her very, very, very soon,” the Emmy-winning Hanks told MTV News at the HBO Emmy afterparty. “The story is magnificent. Eric Roth wrote a brilliant screenplay, which makes our lives very easy because you just read it and you say, ‘I would be honored to be a part of this.’ ” Although he isn’t a close friend of Bullock, he does admire her work. “I am a huge Sandra Bullock fan. I’ve only met her a couple of times. She is a magnificent actress,” he raved. “And every time we’ve seen her, even just as recently as ‘The Proposal’ and ‘The Blind Side,’ we’ve thought, ‘We’d be lucky to work with her.’ ” “Extremely Loud” is focused on a New York boy whose father was killed in the 9/11 attacks. The boy finds a key that belonged to his dad, but he doesn’t know what it unlocks; the plot follows his attempt to answer that question. Foer’s book employs an untraditional writing style that incorporates multiple interconnected story lines, photographs and the like. The rights to the novel were first acquired several years ago. Scott Rudin is producing and Stephen Daldry (“The Hours”) is attached to direct, with a script from “Forrest Gump” writer Eric Roth. Warner Bros. is the lead studio on the project. Robyn Is ‘Super-Duper Excited’ To Perform At VMAs

Swedish superstar will perform a ‘never-before-heard mix’ of ‘Dancing on My Own’ with VMA house artist Deadmau5. By James Montgomery Robyn Photo: Roger Kisby/ Getty Images Somewhat lost in last week’s announcement that both Usher and Paramore will be performing at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards was the news of who else would be joining the festivities … and no, we’re not talking about the stars of “The Social Network.” It’s Robyn, the Swedish superstar who, slowly but surely, has begun her stateside assault with a pair of highly touted pop albums ( Body Talk Part 1 and Body Talk Part 2, both released this year, with a third installment due in December), a stirring single and video ( “Hang With Me” ), and a string of sweat-drenched, sweet-and-salty live shows . And on VMA night, she’ll take another step towards mainstream success when she performs with house artist Deadmau5 during the big show. She’s just one of the artists who’ll be jamming with Deadmau5 — other confirmed acts include Travie McCoy and Jason Derulo — but she’s certainly the one with the most to prove. After all, to most VMA viewers, she’ll be the wild card, the great unknown. And, as she told MTV News, Robyn is more than honored to be performing … and definitely looking forward to the challenge. “Deadmau5 is fantastic and I’m super-duper excited to be able to perform for the VMA audience,” she said in an email. “I’m gonna be ‘dancing on my own’!” That, of course, is a reference to a (really awesome) single from the first Body Talk album — she’ll be performing “a never-before-heard mix” of it at the VMAs — and though you probably aren’t familiar just yet, we’re willing to bet that after Robyn rocks the show, that will change. Quickly. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12.
