By James Montgomery Photo: VH1 Hanson have announced plans for a 12-hour benefit livestream set for Saturday (March 19) at South By Southwest, to aid victims of the massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan. The event, which will stream live at VH1 the event came together at the last minute, with the band and the festival putting a call out to all the acts still in Austin for SXSW. “We’re really excited,” Isaac Hanson said, “We’ve got a lot of bands that are going to be a part of this event, bands that are recording stuff, bands that are going to be live …” “It’s a massive, massive issue that’s really crippling a whole nation and a lot of people just like you and me,” Taylor Hanson added. When Harmony Korine’s short film Umshini Wam screened alongside the latest from Korean filmmaker Park Chan-Wook ( Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Thirst ) at SXSW, both efforts had an unproven element to unveil. For Korine, the wild cards were his stars, the South African hip-hop act Die Antwoord. But for Park, it was something even more groundbreaking: he filmed the mystical, spiritual ghost story Night Fishing entirely using the iPhone 4.

Evan Glodell’s nihilist love story/vengeance tale Bellflower is a dangerous piece of must-see American indie filmmaking for Mad Max fans and, in a way, the same crowd who can’t wait to see Quentin Dupieux’s killer tire flick Rubber . After premiering at Sundance, where Oscilliscope snapped it up for a summer 2011 release, Bellflower blazed a diesel-fueled trail through SXSW treating attendees to a glimpse of the heavily modified Buick Skylark that Glodell transformed into the flame-throwing beast known as the Mother Medusa.

So as we noted , SXSW goes beyond the basic Audience and Jury prizes and also doles out honors in categories like Poster Design and Title Sequence. At the screening honoring finalists in the latter category, juror Ian Albinson put together this nifty video, A Brief History of Title Design . While it’s by no means comprehensive, the montage is breezy and well-edited. Also, it ends with the undisputed champion of all title sequences. That said, I think Jean-Luc Godard’s giant, colorful titles should have gotten props here. What else is missing?
