‘American Idol’ Season 11: Where Are The Bad Singers?

‘Idol’ has kept the predictably awful singers to a minimum so far, and we’re not sure that’s right. By Gil Kaufman Magic Cyclops auditions for “American Idol” in Aspen Photo: Michael Becker / FOX Like casual sports fans who can’t wait for the Winter Olympics to revel in the schadenfreude of watching world-class ice-skaters bite it, “American Idol” watchers have been conditioned to expect early audition episodes packed with a healthy mix of decent, great and truly awful singers. In fact, some eagle-eyed “Idol” observers will tell you that there is a whole legion of viewers out there who only tune in to the first few weeks to see the next William Hung , General Larry “Pants on the Ground” Platt or Keith “Like a Virgin” Beukelaer. But in keeping with the shiny-happy-people vibe “Idol” initiated last year in its first post-Simon Cowell season, through the four audition episodes so far, season 11 “Idol” has noticeably eased up on the so-bad-it’s-good factor. Instead, it has focused on mediocre or not laughably terrible singers, with a handful of decent ringers thrown in for good measure. Yes, we saw a man with a fake accent named Magic Cyclops crash and burn on Wednesday night not long after seemingly joke-worthy Angie Zeiderman performed “When You’ve Got It, Flaunt It” from “The Producers.” But she quickly turned it around and won over the judges with a good-enough take on Roy Orbison’s “Blue Bayou.” The bait-and-switch appears to be the new look for “Idol,” as evidenced by Ali Shields’ cringe-inducing rap/ghetto dance on Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now,” followed by a more passable cover of Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Like a Star.” That kind of rope-a-dope may actually be worse than the plain-old “montage of mediocrity” of the past, because, at best, it’s dishonest, and at worst, it makes you wonder how low the talent bar is this season. The season so far seems to have traded chuckle-inducing singing for outright meanness, as evidenced by the mockery of African immigrant Mawuena Kodjo in the first episode, the sexist baiting of Bikini Girl 2.0 Jennifer Diley, the overly long, indulgent segment on not-that-interesting Ryan Seacrest look-alike Shaun Kraisman and the sniggering at twin Tealana Hedgespeth on Wednesday’s show. The latter seemed the most cruel. For a singer whose segment focused on her ego-denting struggle to emerge from the shadow of her multitalented sister, the snide asides from the judges at Hedgespeth’s expense just seemed heartless. At least in the past when Cowell called someone a “bush baby” or the judges fell off their chairs laughing, they mostly did their worst out in the open instead of stringing the singers along just to crush them after the audition. I know we’re barely two weeks into the cycle, but I won’t lie: I love the crash-and-burners. Watching a mind-blowingly horrendous singer (or three) in an audition episode with an equal amount of ear-catching talent is one of the thrills of “Idol.” It puts the variety in an audition cycle that is often a dull parade of same-y R&B takes on Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey and Aretha Franklin. For the past couple of years, “Idol” producers have crowed about focusing on the talent rather than the freaks in the auditions episodes. But isn’t that what the rest of the season is for? What do you think about the lack of outrageously bad singers this year? Let us know in the comments! Chris Brown Won’t Be Doing Interviews In 2012

‘If people are going to judge anything, judge him for his talent,’ manager tells Billboard of crafting strategy for the pop&B star. By Rebecca Thomas Chris Brown Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images There’ll be no chair-throwing in 2012. After a year in which Chris Brown ‘s applause-worthy feats — Billboard 200 chart-topper F.A.M.E. and a successful tour of the same name — at times threatened to be overshadowed by his penchant for (social) media gaffes, the singer’s team has announced they’re implementing a ban on interviews. Asked whether there was a specific strategy planned for Brown in the New Year, the 22-year-old’s manager, Tina Davis, told Billboard magazine it was to “not have him do interviews but to concentrate on performing and recording,” adding that the idea had been germinating for some time. Last May, Breezy made headlines after a “Good Morning America” interview , when he vented frustration over a line of questioning that zeroed in on ex Rihanna by hurling a chair through a backstage window afterward. The wave of bad press that ensued hit just as the Virginia-born crooner was making the rounds to promote his fourth studio effort, F.A.M.E. Now, as he preps the follow-up to that disc, Fortune, Davis seems determined to steer clear of any possible speed bumps. “We’re not trying to be rude, selfish or disrespectful to anyone in any way,” she told the mag. “If people are going to judge anything, judge him for his talent. He signed up to sing and entertain. Not to talk about his personal life.” Brown may be taking a cue from another superstar, Kanye West, whose self-imposed press-lockout has yielded some impressively expansive Twitter sprees . But it remains to be seen whether the singer will take to the social-networking site as an outlet in similar fashion. On New Year’s Eve, the “Look at Me Now” singer sent a heartfelt message to his fan faithful: “I LOVE Team Breezy unconditionally! Goodbye 2011. Let 2012 bring as much peace positivity and happiness as possible!” he wrote in a hopeful, if wistful, post. He hasn’t tweeted since. What do you think of C.Breezy giving the press the cold shoulder this year? Sound off on our Facebook page or in the comments below. Howard Stern On ‘America’s Got Talent’ Has Fans Curious

‘I’ll definitely at least tune in to the first episode that he’s on, just to see … the kinds of critiques he gives,’ one viewer tells MTV News. By Brian Phares, with additional reporting by Uptin Saiidi Howard Stern Photo: FilmMagic NEW YORK — Howard Stern is coming to your TV — but not in the way you might expect. The controversial radio host is replacing Piers Morgan as the newest judge on “America’s Got Talent,” and the news definitely has people talking. “I feel like the families who are watching it are going to be like, ‘What is this guy doing on this show?’ ” Mike Ruffalo told MTV News when we took to the streets to find out what people were thinking about the controversial move. Other fans were not as concerned. “It’s great publicity for ‘America’s Got Talent,’ ” said Carol John. Indeed, the news has definitely drawn a lot of attention to the Nick Cannon-hosted competition show, but will that mean more viewers? “Howard Stern is a funny, crazy dude. I will definitely be in there watching it,” said Gabriel Garcia, proving that, for at least one fan, having Stern on the show is a major draw. John was interested but felt a little more trepidation when she told us, “I’ll definitely at least tune in to the first episode that he’s on, just to see how he approaches the show and the kinds of critiques he gives to the acts that perform.” Regardless of what people think about Howard Stern, the general consensus is that having him on “America’s Got Talent” is a great move for the show. But is it a great move for Howard? “Twenty million dollars could persuade a lot of people to do a lot of things,” Peter Papaemanuel pointed out. Amen, Peter. What do you think of the move? Nicki Minaj Named Billboard Rising Star of 2011

Becoming one of the biggest names in rap/hip-hop/pop, Nicki Minaj is having one heck of a year. With this new honor from Billboard, it’s going to get even bigger. She is slated to receive the honor of Rising Star of 2011 at Billboard’s “Women in Music” event on December 2 in New York City. She will no doubt look ridiculous. Minaj said she was “deeply honored to be recognized by Billboard ” and that she and her fans”mighty long way” but are not close to where “God will take us.” A classic moment in a year full of them for Nicki Minaj . With her talent and style, the rapper/singer has emerged as one of music’s most popular entertainers since releasing her debut album Pink Friday late last year. Her hits include “Super Bass” and “Moment 4 Life,” and she’s collaborated with many other big names. She’ll have one of her biggest fans on hand next Friday: Taylor Swift will be honored as Woman of the Year. Anyone surprised?

Piers Morgan Resigns as America’s Got Talent Judge

America might have talent. But it no longer has Piers Morgan as a reality show judge. “I’m leaving America’s Got Talent after 6 wonderful years,” Morgan Tweeted last night, following an announcement on his CNN talk show.“Turned out that juggling’s harder than it looks, so I’m going to focus on CNN.” Morgan went on to thank “NBC, Fremantle, and of course, my friend Simon Cowell, for giving me such a great opportunity. It’s been a blast.” No word yet on who might replace this panelist, but first chime in: Will you miss Piers Morgan on America’s Got Talent ?

Mark Herschler isn’t my brother by blood, but our connection is as strong as blood family. We even look enough alike that for years many people thought we were blood relatives. Mark is one of the most versatile and under-celebrated musicians in the country, playing in a multitude of styles. One of my favorite genres is his flamenco pieces. The video sadly doesn’t really do his talent justice, but good… Broadcasting platform : Vimeo Source : The Impolitic Discovery Date : 23/10/2011 17:44 Number of articles : 2

Rihanna Gets Loud After Home Leaks Hard

Talk about the wrong place for a California King Bed. After her house took on serious water, Rihanna is suing a real estate company, property inspector and the former owner of the property she bought in Beverly Hills. She claims that those involved with the sale failed to inform her that the residence was “laden with construction defects” that ultimately resulted in water damage. And that’s no place for a California king bed. Before she closed on it in 2009, LaRocca Inspection Associates found a number of issues, including cracks in exterior walls and drainage problems on the roof that could make the house susceptible to water damage, according to the lawsuit. Rihanna still wanted the house, so she drew up a request for repairs for the owner, the suit states. Upon inspection, LaRocca declared the house “serviceable.” Well, according to the singer’s attorneys … it was not . The house sustained flood damage from a “moderate” January 2010 rainstorm after water pooled on the second-floor balcony and seeped into multiple rooms. A subsequent inspection by an insurance company found similar defects as before and Rihanna is seeking to recover a portion of the $6.9 million she paid. She is suing previous owner Heather Rudamin, Prudential California Realty, LaRocca, Landmark Design Group and a couple of agents thereof for professional negligence, fraud, breach of contract and other offenses.
