Wiz also tells MTV News he looks forward to appearing on Taylor Gang fam Chevy Woods’ Cookout mixtape. By Rob Markman Wiz Khalifa Photo: Dana Nalbandian/ WireImage Wiz Khalifa refuses to rest on his laurels. Just six months after the release of his gold major-label debut, Rolling Papers, the “Black and Yellow” MC revealed to MTV News that he has already started work on his follow-up. “Yeah, I’ve started working on a next album just to get a feel for where I’m going with it,” Wiz told us on the BMI Urban Awards red carpet last month. ” ‘No Sleep’ is gonna do what it’s gonna do,” Khalifa said of the fourth and latest single from Rolling Papers. “Hopefully, it takes off; it’s been getting a lot of love so far.” As of now, there is still no date or title for the next Wiz album, but fans of the Pittsburgh rap star will get to hear some new music from him later this month when his pal Chevy Woods drops his mixtape The Cookout. “You know me, I’m always working, doing new stuff. I got artists that I’m working on and stuff like that; Chevy is doin’ his thing.” The next artist to emerge from the smoked-out spitter’s Taylor Gang crew is Chevy Woods . During the past few months, Wiz and Woods have been actively promoting Cookout, the soon-to-be-released Chevy tape that will prominently feature Khalifa as well. “[Wiz’s] gonna be on at least half or more [of the songs],” Chevy told Mixtape Daily in July. “It’s my tape, featuring him.” “It’s gonna be coming out in early September, so anybody who wants to hear some new raps from me, they can go get that,” Wiz confirmed.”And, of course, Chevy is gonna kill it and do his thing. It’s gonna be real fun.” Are you looking forward to what Chevy and Wiz cook up? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Wiz Khalifa
‘It’s totally exhilarating to see kids lined up outside,’ MC marvels on the day of his debut album’s release. By Steven Roberts Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — A year ago, Wiz Khalifa was a relative unknown. Sure, Wiz was selling out shows, but outside his loyal Taylor Gang fanbase, he wasn’t a household name. That all changed with the release of his breakout mixtape, Kush & Orange Juice, and the anthemic single “Black and Yellow.” Fast-forward 10 months, and Khalifa’s major-label debut, Rolling Papers, is in a battle for the week’s #1 release against Snoop Dogg and Britney Spears. MTV News caught up with Khalifa on Tuesday afternoon (March 29) for his in-store at Best Buy in Union Square, and even he was shocked to see fans lined up around the block. “It’s totally exhilarating to see kids lined up outside, screaming, wanting the album and purchasing the album,” Khalifa marveled. “It was actually like a year ago that I first started working on the album. “I didn’t really know where I was going, but I knew I was going somewhere,” he continued. “To have it done and to see the full vision and for people to be excited about it and the entire buildup, it’s just really magnificent.” Plenty of excited — but also laid-back, of course — Wiz fans waited outside Best Buy for a chance to meet Khalifa and get his autograph. Many of them came out on Monday night to buy the album at midnight and receive a wristband to meet Wiz on Tuesday. “I love that kid, no lie. I don’t know that kid personally, but when I greeted him, I was in the zone,” fan Daniel Candelairo told MTV News. “I’ve been listening to him since ’07, so unlike most people out here claiming Taylor Gang — I’m not into all of that. I just listen to his music and I promote him.” Candelairo recalled catching flak for being a Wiz fan back in the day, but he’s enjoyed the turnaround. “He’s blowing. Everybody loves this kid,” he said. “It’s awesome. I’m proud of him.” Have you checked out Wiz’s debut album yet? Share your reviews in the comments! Related Artists Wiz Khalifa
Rapper responds to critics who say he’s gotten aggressive: ‘I don’t do anything that’s inappropriate for my style.’ By James Montgomery Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News AUSTIN, Texas — In recent months, first with the chart-topping success of “Black and Yellow” and then with his underground hit “Taylor Gang,” Wiz Khalifa seems to have gotten aggressive, a move that some see as a departure from his stony, laconic roots. But Wiz is not one of them. ” ‘Taylor Gang’ is not a departure for me or my style. Anybody who’s been connected to my whole career, they know the variations of where I go and my beat selections,” he told MTV News backstage at the Woodie Awards during South by Southwest. “Lex [Luger, who produced ‘Taylor Gang’] has been a real big fan since back in the day, and I’ve been up on his music for a long time as well, so it’s just been bound to happen. He’s a great guy and he’s really talented, so it’s just good to see him getting the shine he deserves.” And to anyone who still doesn’t agree with him, Wiz would like to point out that he’s actually been working with Luger for a while now — he produced a handful of songs on Wiz’s Cabin Fever mixtape — and that he wouldn’t sign on to work with anyone if he doesn’t feel like it would complement his music. “I just find that little pocket where it matches up. I don’t feel like I do anything that’s inappropriate for my style, and he’s always going to stay consistent as well,” he said. “So when we meet up, you know, that’s when it makes that magic. Cabin Fever has, like, six songs from Lex Luger on there, and people love that tape.” And with his hotly anticipated Rolling Papers album set to hit stores March 29, Khalifa said he’s hoping fans won’t bail on him just because he’s gotten a bit aggro as of late. Though, if they do, he’ll still continue doing what he does. “It’s definitely aggressive, but I’ve got songs on the album like ‘On My Level,’ ‘Black and Yellow’ is not really a calm song, so … they’ve got to keep listening,” he smiled. “Or, you know, they can stick there, but at the end of the day I know what I’m doing.” What do you think of Wiz’s new music?
