These days, Taylor Swift can do no wrong. The woman makes a million dollars a day , and she other artists comparing her to Shakespeare . But there was a time when Taylor was just a little girl who was down with the Teletubbies trend way before her classmates: Swifty posted the above photo to Instagram yesterday, along with a caption reading: “When you dress as the yellow teletubby for Halloween, but it’s before Teletubbies got huge so all the kids at school ask you why you’re dressed as a yellow pregnant alien.” Yes, as hard as it is to imagine now, there was a time when both Taylor and Teletubbies were unknown to the general public. In case you were never on board with the T-Tubz, Taylor is dressed as Laa-Laa, who…looked and acted just like the rest of the Teletubbies but was yellow. But hey, yellow pregnant alien is a cool costume too. She could’ve laughed it off with a joke about giving birth to the weird baby-sun thing that loomed over Teletubbyland, but it totally would’ve gone over her classmates’ heads, because these freakin’ kids didn’t watch Teletubbies! What, did they live in caves?! We hope this incident more than any other inspired Taylor to go on to great things and that she occasionally calls one of the kids who laughed at her and is all like, “Hey, it’s me, the pregnant yellow alien. Anyway, I’m about to go on stage with Mick Jagger . Just thought you’d like to know.” Sorry, we might be getting too worked up over this yellow Teletubby thing. Ah, Shakespeare. Willy Shakes. Poet, playwright, subject of countless half-assed term papers, possible stoner , and arguably the most celebrated figure in the history of literature. The Bard’s got quite a few achievements under his foppish Elizabethan belt, but has he ever released a multi-platinum album? Did even have a squad ? We doubt it. So maybe Ryan Adams is on to something when he says Shakespeare and Taylor Swift are basically in the same boat. Or maybe he’s just being a total dumbass. Adams recently covered Swift’s 1989 in its entirety, and while we – like most people – initially dismissed it as part of his ongoing attempt to remain relevant and sell some records to people who aren’t confused about the absence of “Summer of ’69” on the tracklist, it turns out Ryan actually has a ton of respect for Taylor. Like, “thinks she’s on par with the greatest geniuses the Western world has ever produced”-level respect. In a recent interview with The Guardian , Ryan compared covering Taylor’s songs to “being in Ghostbusters or something, and then all of a sudden I have to go do Shakespeare.” When the interviewer pointed out that that’s a bit of an “overgenerous analogy,” Adams replied, “Well, look, those songs are popular for a reason. She’s a popular artist for a reason.” He may be onto something there. Guys, we recommend you take your girlfriend to McDonald’s instead of a fancy restaurant for your next anniversary, and if she questions your decision, simply point out that Mickey D’s is more popular than any French eatery on the planet, and there must be a reason for that, non ? Then, when she dumps you, you can write an album of sad breakup music, and Ryan Adams will cover it the next time he’s out of ideas. It’s the circle of life.
The Weekend: “Taylor Swift Pet My Hair And It Was Uncomfortable” In an interview with Rolling Stone this week , singer The Weeknd recounts meeting Taylor Swift earlier this year and how comfortable she felt petting his hair. Weirdo! The “I Can’t Feel My Face” singer said that he was at a Grammy party, celebrating Sam Smith, and Taylor came up to him drunk like a skunk trying to pet his locks. Her man-fingers probably started to tingle after a few shots, this is what the singer says happened in his cover-story interview: Everybody was having a great time, all these cool things were happening, and I was shaking, like — ‘F**k, I really want a drink.’” That’s when he met Taylor Swift. “She actually schooled me on my own s#!t,” Tesfaye says. “She was like, ‘I’ve been listening to ‘The Morning’ [from House of Balloons ] for years — it’s one of my favorite songs ever!’ I mean, she might have just Googled it. But she seemed genuine.” Tesfaye says Swift went on for about 15 minutes. “But the whole time she was talking,” he says, “she was kind of, like, petting my hair? I think she was just drawn to it — she must have been a little gone off a few drinks. And of course I’m not going to be like, ‘Hey, can you stop?’ I mean, it felt good!
