Gay Michigan student defends suspended teacher

A 14-year-old who issued an impassioned defense of a suspended teacher has become a bit of an Internet folk hero in a new viral video. Over the weekend, gossip blogger Perez Hilton and several other high-traffic sites picked up the video, which features the dramatic testimonial of Ann Arbor, Mich., teen Graeme Taylor. Taylor told the Howell, Mich., school board last week that he attempted suicide at age 9 because he was bullied for being gay. He was speaking on behalf of Howell High teacher Jay McDowell, who had been suspended for two days for asking a student to remove her Confederate flag belt buckle and for ejecting two students from class after a heated exchange about gay rights. According to Livingston Daily reporter Jason Carmel Davis, McDowell was suspended after he ejected 16-year-old junior Daniel Glowacki and another student from his classroom. Glowacki objected to his teacher asking a fellow student to remove her Confederate flag belt buckle. The school was participating in Spirit Day on Oct. 20, a voluntary event for students designed to raise awareness about anti-gay bullying. Glowacki apparently argued with McDowell over the request to remove the buckle, asking how his classmate's Confederate flag insignia was different from the students wearing purple for Spirit Day. The local union says the student also made “inappropriate and offensive statements regarding gay students.” Lindsey Forbes, spokeswoman for the local teachers union, the Howell Education Association, tells The Lookout that McDowell followed school policy in asking for the belt buckle to be removed. Teachers are supposed to ask students to remove “inappropriate” or distracting clothing, she says. Confederate flags are not specifically listed as inappropriate, but Forbes says the flag is a symbol of hate, especially in Howell. Two years ago, a group of students were investigated by the Department of Justice for starting a Facebook group that used the Confederate flag as its profile photo and featured hate speech. Two students were suspended. An area north of Howell also had an active Ku Klux Klan membership in the '70s and '80s, according to the Livingston County Press. “It's pretty clear in our community what that symbol stands for,” Forbes says. McDowell was suspended for one day without pay after the student in question complained about the removal of her belt buckle. The staff attorney for Michigan's American Civil Liberties Union chapter, Jay Kaplan, tells The Lookout that the case represents a “balancing act” between protecting free speech and creating a safe school environment, but that both students were most likely protected by the First Amendment. “Wearing [the Confederate flag] on the belt buckle probably is protected speech,” he said, based on court precedents. “The situation where the student expressed his disapproval of homosexuality is also protected speech.” He said the “well-meaning” McDowell should have instead started a discussion about why the Confederate flag is a symbol of hate for so many and how denigrating homosexuality marginalizes gay people. The ACLU has offered to host training sessions for teachers about what the law says. McDowell, who is also president of the local teachers union, is appealing the decision, and is back at work while his grievance is pending–a procedure that has been known to take as long as a year. Howell High is holding a “diversity forum” Monday night to talk about the issue. According to the union, the school has no specific policy prohibiting anti-gay bullying. http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20101115/us_yblog_thelookout/gay-michig… added by: onemalefla

ABC Links Dan Quayle’s ‘Potatoe’ to His Son: ‘Dust off the Jokes and Hold on to Your Potatoes’

Saturday’s Good Morning America on ABC devoted a full report to former Vice President Dan Quayle’s son Ben’s run for Congress in Arizona, focusing primarily on perceived gaffes by both him and his father. As anchor John Berman set up the report, he gave the impression that he views the former Vice President primarily as a joke: “It’s time to dust off the jokes and hold on to your potatoes. Who can forget the vice presidency of Dan Quayle? His mortal feud with TV’s Murphy Brown. His battles with the dictionary. Well, now, one of his children wants to follow in his footsteps and is making some headlines of his own, not all intentional.” During the piece which recounted a number of activities and statements by Ben Quayle that have come under criticism, or have come across to some as gaffes, correspondent T.J. Winick played a clip of the time that Dan Quayle infamously told a school boy that the word “potato” should have an “e” added to the end during a spelling lesson at a school. Winnick did not inform viewers that it was the teacher who led Quayle astray as she had misspelled the word on the word list she had given to the then-Vice President to check the children’s spelling. Winick also described what he called a “shocking ad” in which Ben Quayle labeled President Obama “the worst President in history,” and promised to go to Washington and “knock the hell out of the place.” The ABC correspondent also informed viewers that Quayle had been criticized for using a photograph of himself with his nieces in campaign literature because he has no children of his own. After the report, co-anchor Bianna Golodryga mused: “You know, every time I write out the word ‘potato’ I can’t help but think of Mr. Dan Quayle.” Below is a complete transcript of the report from the Saturday, August 14, Good Morning America on ABC: JOHN BERMAN: It’s time to dust off the jokes and hold on to your potatoes. Who can forget the vice presidency of Dan Quayle? His mortal feud with TV’s Murphy Brown. His battles with the dictionary. Well, now, one of his children wants to follow in his footsteps and is making some headlines of his own, not all intentional. Our man T.J. Winick has the story from Washington. T.J.? T.J. WINICK: John, good morning. Ben Quayle is the front-runner in a primary field of 10 candidates. He’s really struck a chord with angry voters, and, in more ways than one, he’s proven to be a chip off the old block. BEN QUAYLE, ARIZONA REPUBLICAN CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE: Barack Obama is the worst President in history. WINICK: It’s a shocking ad, Ben Quayle looking straight into the camera talking tough like a Washington outsider. BEN QUAYLE: Somebody has to go to Washington and knock the hell out of the place. WINICK: But the 33-year-old may, in fact, be the ultimate insider. He’s the son of former Vice President Dan Quayle who’s tapped into his dad’s massive fund-raising network but also his dad’s history of making mistakes. Dan Quayle became a political punch line during the 1992 presidential race and in his four years as Vice President. (CLIP OF FORMER VICE PRESIDENT DAN QUAYLE TELLING A BOY TO ADD AN “E” TO THE WORD “POTATO”) WINICK: Now his son’s blunders like this campaign brochure have also become late night fodder. JAY LENO, FROM THE TONIGHT SHOW: Look at those two beautiful little girls. Trouble is, he doesn’t have any kids. WINICK: They were, in fact, Ben Quayle’s nieces, but that didn’t stop one campaign rival from accusing him of renting a family. RICK KLEIN, ABC NEWS SENIOR WASHINGTON EDITOR: People are looking for comparisons to his father. They’re looking for reasons not to take him seriously. They’re looking for reasons to make fun of him. And, so far, he’s only fueled that fire. WINICK: Quayle has also taken fire for calling himself the fourth generation of his family to live and work in Arizona. That’s because he was born in Indiana, grew up in Washington, D.C., and only moved to the state full time five years ago. CLIP OF AD: Arizona roots, worldwide experience. WINICK: This past week, the latest controversy, accusations that Quayle, campaigning as a family values conservative, once wrote for Dirty Scottsdale, a raunchy sex-themed Web site that covered the local club scene. The Web site’s creator says that Quayle used the alias “Brock Landers,” the name of a porn star in the movie Boogie Nights. Quayle admits he contributed to the site, but not under that name. KLEIN: Certainly, he benefits from the fact that people know that name and they know the name is associated with politics, but there’s just more scrutiny associated with being a Quayle. WINICK: One of the ways he has benefitted, well, Ben Quayle has raised over $1.1 million, and, not surprisingly, John and Bianna, many of those contributions have come from former colleagues and friends of his father. BIANCA GOLODRYGA: All right, T.J. You know, every time I write out the word “potato” I can’t help but think of Mr. Dan Quayle. BERMAN: I cross my fingers every time. (GOLODRYGA LAUGHS)

Saving Sarah Palin

There has been an ocean of discussion about Sarah Palin, ever since the moment she took to the stage at the Republican National Convention in 2008. Ms. Palin has encouraged the discussion by making statements that, to me, seemed to be ignorant, insane, or both. As anyone who visits Current.com knows, I have been in love with Sarah since the first time I saw her beautiful face and delicious legs, and, earlier this week I was shocked and chastened to learn things about her which changed my feelings. The recent YouTube video, reposted on Current, that shows Sarah being upbraided by an Alaskan schoolteacher, started me on the path to a new appraisal. I was puzzled by Sarah's confounded reaction to the teacher's criticism, because it seemed Sarah was absolutely stumped as to how to react when the teacher asked her how she was protecting the Constitution. Then, when I looked further down the page on the Current posting, I saw that someone had posted the results of an IQ test that Sarah took as a schoolgirl. On the test, she scored an 83. According to Terman's Stanford-Binet Second Revision classification, Sarah Palin's IQ of 83 puts her into the “Dullness” category (Lewis Terman, developer of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence test). You can see the link below this video to examine the table for yourself. It's apparent that not only is Sarah wrong about most of what she says, she's too dull to even understand it. My earlier suspicions that the conservatives trotted her out to get votes have been confirmed. Here is a woman ill-equipped to do much more than interact with a family in a safe environment, yet she was placed in a position of power and authority by a cynical group of predators who are willing to ruin her life in order to gain political power. This same gang of crooks fulminated against Bill Clinton for his abuse of women. From now on I urge you to do what you can to save Sarah Palin from this sick and corrupt band of pimps who have willingly exposed her and her family to a torrent of attention and abuse. My postings here are almost always meant to make you laugh, but there is nothing funny about using an incompetent woman as a lure for votes and political power. That's just simple prostitution, and the last I heard, that's illegal in all 50 states. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IQ_reference_chart added by: Progresshiv

CC Sabathia Remembers An Epic Paint Fight On ‘When I Was 17’

‘I went and put a stripe on a girl’s shirt, and it turned into a big paint fight,’ the Yankees pitcher recalls. By James Montgomery CC Sabathia Photo: MTV News Back before he was throwing heat for the New York Yankees, CC Sabathia was throwing paint in the classrooms of Vallejo High School in California. And, as he explains on Saturday’s all-new episode of “When I Was 17,” he was just as good at it as he is at baseball. “I remember one time in my junior year, in my art class, our teacher had us doing, like, finger paints, and I went and put a stripe on a girl’s shirt, and it turned into a big paint fight,” he laughed. “Paint all over the walls, all over everybody. It was pretty fun. “The teacher was this short little lady, and she was screaming, ‘You guys, stop!’ and we kind of drowned her out,” Sabathia continued. “I did a lot of bad stuff, I guess.” But, luckily, it didn’t get much worse than flinging paint. Because back then, Sabathia — who stood 6-foot-6 and weighed 235 pounds and starred at not only baseball, but football and basketball too — could’ve done some serious damage. That wasn’t really in his nature, though, and pretty much everyone who knew him back at Vallejo High remembers him as “a big teddy bear.” Of course, there was another reason he never really misbehaved: his mother, Margie, who was waiting at home every day and was more than willing to keep CC in line. And, thankfully for him, she didn’t hear about the whole paint-fight incident until producers brought it up on “When I Was 17.” “Oh, man, I didn’t hear about that one,” she smiled. “See, there’s some things they keep from you!” Sorry, CC, hope we didn’t get you in too much trouble. “When I Was 17” — this week featuring CC, Ciara and Debi Nova — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Don’t Feed The Troll

Trolls do zilch for me these days. This is because I'm jaded. Allow me to explain. I moderate a rather high-profile message board. This has been a pastime of mine for a few years now. Over the years, I have seen my share of trolls, and I've learned that the best way to deal with trolls is not to react to them. You see, the troll is an enigmatic creature. They could be just about anyone you imagine…your teacher, your mail carrier, your sibling, even one of your parents or grandparents. They could be fine, upstanding citizens, who simply like to say inflammatory things on the Internet just to get a rise out of people…(continued) added by: DoctorLulzington

‘Lost’ Star Says Series Hurtling ‘Full Throttle Toward Resolution’

‘Ben finds notes of tenderness in his life,’ Michael Emerson says of his character in penultimate episode airing tonight. By Josh Wigler Michael Emerson Photo: MTV News Benjamin Linus is many things: a liar, a manipulator, a mass-murderer and, most recently, a pawn. What he isn’t, however, is lucky in romance. But that’s all about to change on tonight’s penultimate episode of “Lost,” titled “What They Died For.” Speaking with MTV News, actor Michael Emerson revealed that his character, Ben, the onetime leader of the mysterious Others, will finally have some chance at love on “Lost” — in his flash-sideways life, that is. “I guess there might be [romance], yeah,” he told us when asked about rumors of a romantic interest for Ben’s sideways counterpart. “You could take it that way. Teacher Ben finds, at long last, notes of tenderness in his life.” Emerson admitted that love has been “tough for Island Ben — he doesn’t have that. But why shouldn’t Teacher Ben? Maybe that’s one of the morals of the flash-sideways: that [a] quieter life does sometimes allow for kinds of sweetness that are unavailable when you’re chasing the big game on the Island.” Speaking of chasing big game on the Island, Emerson promised that tonight’s episode gets back into the thick of the end game, following last week’s divisive and mythology-heavy episode, “Across the Sea.” Emerson teased: “This is full throttle, main line ‘Lost’ island mythology . We’re hurtling towards a resolution. It’s strong.” Fans who’ve noticed Ben’s absence in recent episodes will be happy to hear he’s back in the spotlight in tonight’s outing. The actor himself acknowledges that Ben has plenty of issues to resolve before the series concludes on Sunday. In fact, Emerson promised resolution on two issues: Ben’s relationship with Locke (“Yes, that’s by no means finished,” he said) and his rivalry with Charles Widmore. “Oh yes, those characters will meet again,” Emerson cryptically revealed of Ben and Widmore’s shared future, one that might not be revealed until “The End.” Are you excited for these last two episodes of “Lost”?
