Really? School Hires Two Masked Men To Shoot Up A Teacher Meeting With Blanks As Part Of A Readiness Drill

WTF? We know they wanted the teachers to be prepared, but hiring fake gunmen to scare them was a little too much. Schools Hires Fake Gunmen For Readiness Drill According to Gawker A school district in Oregon is catching some flak after it recently sent two masked gunmen loaded with blanks on a meeting room full of teachers as part of a surprise “readiness drill” for an active shooter scenario. The two men burst into the meeting room at Pine Eagle Charter School in Halfway last Friday and opened fire on the teachers within. After several long moments, the terrorized teachers realized the shooting was staged since they weren’t, well, being shot to death. The Oregonian reports that the school’s staff had received training on what to do in case of an active shooting event from the Union County Sheriff’s Office, and the district picked an in-service day during which students stayed at home in order to conduct the unannounced drill. After the initial shock wore off, some of the teachers arrived at the realization that they would not have survived had this been a real-life school shooting. Asked how many of the fifteen teachers would have made it out alive, Principal Cammie DeCastro responded, “not many.” She blew off critics who expressed concern for the possibility that some of the teachers could have been literally scared to death, or worse, could have been carrying a concealed weapon of their own and moved to respond in kind. In fact, the latter may be an outcome of the failed drill as the district’s Safety Committee and the School Board consider arming teachers or bringing in armed volunteers to watch over the children. “For us not to know how we were going to respond is leaving us open,” DeCastro said. Maybe this is another “teachable moment” or are they using this drill as an excuse to demand that teachers carry guns in the classroom? Shutterstock Continue reading

SMH: Teachers Investigated For Getting Frisky With Male Students

We thought the only place we had to worry about our kids being inappropriately touched was the Catholic church. Unfortunately more and more teachers are getting busy with students. Teachers Caught In “Boy Toy” Probe According to NY Post Two female Long Island high-school teachers were abruptly yanked from their classrooms Monday after being accused of inappropriate contact with two of male students, sources said. Sachem HS North business teachers Donna Newton-McNally, 41, of Centereach, and Melanie Akerberg, 33, of Ronkonkoma, are being investigated by district officials for alleged misconduct with a football player and a wrestler. Sources said a girlfriend of one of the boys found texts from a teacher on his phone and alerted Sachem North principal John Dolan, who ordered a probe. The stunned husbands of the two women reacted angrily to the revelations, with one confronting one of the two seniors this week, a source said. District spokesperson Chris Vaccaro confirmed the teachers were removed but would not disclose the nature of the probe. It was not clear if they were accused of physical contact or inappropriate correspondence. The teachers have been administratively reassigned pending the outcome of the investigation. Suffolk County Police said they have not been contacted about the situation. Both of the seniors are over the age of consent. Students were stunned by the news and described both teachers as popular fixtures on campus. “It’s just hard to believe that this stuff goes on,” said one student who tweeted her support for Newton-McNally. “I’m really hoping that there isn’t anything to it and it’s chatter.” Reeling seniors said that the two male students are charismatic athletes and that both have girlfriends. “These guys got a lot of attention from girls but you wouldn’t think that it would get to this level,” said a senior pal. “But these days, it seems like you hear about this all the time. Just not at your own school. It’s crazy.” Akerberg joined the district in 2006 and Newton-McNally was hired in 2001. Neither was available for comment. Illicit campus relations have become commonplace in recent years, with a marked increase in female teachers targeting male students. Football players appear to enjoy a particular appeal among instructors. Notorious Brooklyn teacher Erin Sayar, 36, was arrested for allegedly smoking pot and repeatedly sleeping with a gridiron star last year. Her husband has since filed for divorce. Hide Ya Kids! 5 Tips To Building A Great Relationship With Your Child’s School

Education budgets have been slashed. Teachers are overburdened and underpaid. Now more than ever, parents need to offer a helping hand. According to a 2000 U .S. Department of Education Schools and Staffing Survey, 91 percent of teachers say lack of parent involvement is a problem in schools. Here are a variety of ways to get involved in your kid’s education and foster success in the classroom—whether you’re a stay-at-home mom with daytime hours to give, or a working parent with only evening hours to offer. 1- Become visible. As teacher I cannot tell you how many teacher parent conferences I have spent in my classroom alone. I just sit waiting for a parent to walk through the door. It isn’t because we haven’t told you. It was on the calendar at the beginning of the school year. We have called. We have sent letters home with the child and mailed them  postal mail.  So “show up”!Make time for parent/teacher conferences and go to awards ceremonies, concerts, carnivals, science fairs, book fairs, and curriculum nights. The older your child is, the more important it is for you to be there. Often parents back off when children enter middle or high school. Attending these events may be the only way you can plug in at these levels. 2- Communicate- We live in the world of technology. A simple email to reach out and find out how your child is doing is helpful. It also allows for a method of trouble shooting and weakness in your child’s work. I have no enjoyment in failing a student. I write my email in the front of your child notebook. I provide my cell as well. Most teachers do that as well. Homework now lives on a centralized web page for your child. Take a moment and look at the class page. You may be inspired by what you see. 3- Make yourself accessible. Even if you work outside the home, give your children’s teachers your direct contact information.  I cannot tell you how many times a phone number supplied at the beginning of the year reaches an out of service line. It’s frustrating. If you’re at home but find yourself away often, give teachers your cell phone number. When teachers know you’re available, they’ll include you in much of what goes on at school.. The more you know, the better equipped you’ll be to help your children succeed. 4- Understand what is going on at school. Too often we go into school with an agenda based on our convenience. Set aside your preferences and ask yourself: How can I best support my children this year? and How can I best support their teachers? For some, working at the school isn’t feasible. But the time you spend talking to your kids about what they do in school and how they feel about it is just as important. Ask your children to set some goals for their school year. Offer whatever support they need to reach those goals. Then ask their teachers, “How can I best help this year?”  Do not assume that the whole truth has been told in a situation. I cannot count the times I had an angry parent suddenly appear because they felt their child was harmed. After the yelling ceased and I pointed out the real crux of the matter there was a new approach. 5- Stay aware . At times, we’ve missed deadlines or a overlooked piece of homework or two, can cause problems! I say “we” because as the grown-up, you need to supervise the contents of your child’s backpack It is in the sudden changes in your child that you spot the ship going off course. Stay aware. Remember the Titanic wasn’t sunk by one big gash but by numerous small gashes Remember that teachers cannot do it all alone. We need your support as a parent to work in partnership with us. Krauthammer Smacks Down WaPo’s King Over Stimulus Jobs Created or Saved

For the second week in a row Charles Krauthammer has gotten into a heated debate with the Washington Post’s Colby King on the PBS program “Inside Washington.” This time it was about the effectiveness of President Obama’s stimulus plan.  “These guys have had a year and a half and people are not happy with the results,” said Krauthammer. “$1 trillion of stimulus it disappeared and there is nothing to show.” King responded, “They had 3 million jobs to show for it.” The fun really started after Krauthammer marvelously replied, “Yeah, saved, saved, how do you measure a saved job?” (video follows with transcript and commentary):  GORDON PETERSON, HOST: Is Axelrod right, or is he just looking for an excuse to talk about the President’s bad numbers? EVAN THOMAS, NEWSWEEK: Is that a binary question? CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: Yeah, the correct answer is “b.” (LAUGHTER) KRAUTHAMMER: Let’s go on to something else. I mean, it’s so damned obvious, come on. I mean, he’s whining in advance, he’s looking for an excuse. He ran, look, these guys have had a year and a half and people are not happy with the results. $1 trillion of stimulus it disappeared and there is nothing to show. With the healthcare reform people don’t want… COLBY KING, WASHINGTON POST: They had 3 million jobs to show for it. KRAUTHAMMER: Yeah, saved, saved, how do you measure a saved job? KING: Go out and ask the teachers. Go out and ask the teachers. Go out and ask the cops whose jobs were saved. Ask them about it. They’ll tell you. KRAUTHAMMER: The net loss of jobs is staggering under this administration. KING: Well… KRAUTHAMMER: Yes… KING: Given the eight years of mismanagement it was bound to happen. KRAUTHAMMER: There has been a half a million increase… KING: The eight years of mismanagement it was bound to happen. KRAUTHAMMER: …government jobs have gone up and the private sector has cratered. KING: Charles, that’s speaking a lie, you know exactly what I am talking about because you are a straight shooter. PETERSON: If you’re Axelrod, Evan, what do you say to the President at this point? KRAUTHAMMER: I’m leaving. [Laughter] KRAUTHAMMER: Which he is. I’m leaving in spring. That’s what you say. THOMAS: Yeah, I think that they are really exhausted and, and a little bit down and they’re just kind of, I think they’re, they don’t know what to do. I don’t, I don’t think they are having happy, optimistic, this is all going to work out conversations in the Oval Office. I think they’re just trying to get… NINA TOTENBERG, NPR: Do you have any good ideas? KRAUTHAMMER: They made a choice early on that they were going to push an ideological agenda on healthcare instead of addressing the American economy and that is the major complaint against them. And that’s why they’re going to get swept in November. Indeed. Nicely done, Charles. These weekly smackdowns are becoming something to look forward to on Friday nights. Almost better than high school football.  Readers are encouraged to review last week’s fight .
