Today is the day all South Africans have been waiting for.

WORLD CLASS: Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban will host various World Cup matches. PHOTO: Thuli Dlamini STUNNING: Soccer FANS at Peter Mokaba stadium in Limpopo PHOTO: ELIJAR MUSHIANA SPLENDID: green Point Stadium in Cape Town. PHOTO: SIMON MATHEBULA All our host cities and their stadiums are ready. Fan transport and fan parks are prepared and ready for the big day. Bafana Bafana has been scoring goals and today the games begin. Bafana has had 12 consecutive wins. More than 500million people in the world are going to bring their attention to South Africa and we will not disappoint. Today Bafana Bafana takes on Mexico in the month-long tournament. Local Organising Committee chief executive Danny Jordaan yesterday said today “is going to be an incredible day”. “South Africans are late believers but once they believe, they are fanatical believers. Of course our team has increased our ability to believe,” he said. He likened the run-up to the 2010 Soccer World Cup to the struggle against apartheid, joking that his next career move might be to the post office. “Then the prison doors opened and he (Mandela) walked out … and we thought, what are we going to do next? I think I will look for a smaller job now … like a job in the post office. I think I’ve seen enough struggle.” Jordaan said during the country’s key historic moments the rest of the world – and some South Africans – always seemed to expect the worst of South Africa. “You see the headlines: “Race war’, ‘Bloodshed’, ‘Chaos’, ‘Plan B’, ‘Don’t do it’, ‘It’s not going to happen’,” Jordaan said. The recent successes of Bafana Bafana, whose tour on a party bus to Sandton in Johannesburg on Wednesday drew tens of thousands of fans on to the streets, played a big role in South Africa’s new-found optimism. “Of course our team has increased our ability to believe,” said Jordaan, referring to the 12 consecutive wins. To top the journey off, he said, he really would like to see Nelson Mandela at Soccer City during the opening this afternoon. “Nelson Mandela is 92 years old … he himself wants to be there. Whether he stays five minutes or the whole match is really not our decision. “As things stand now, there is a very, very great chance that, in fact, he’ll be there because he wants to be there. How long he will stay, that is really his decision. But we’ll just be happy if he shows his face,” Jordaan said. He said that Mandela had been the symbol of unity for a democratic South Africa, whose citizens saw racial barriers being torn down in the run-up to the Cup, especially when the Blue Bulls rugby team trekked to Soweto for the Super 14 finals . “ Today was set to become a pivotal day in South Africa and Africa’s history . It is a psychological barrier that has been crossed … it’s an assertion of who we are as Africans and what we can deliver.” Source – Sowetan.com 2010 World Cup Blog for the Fans

Ice Cube Says ‘Put Your Money On’ L.A. Lakers In NBA Finals

The West Coast MC and superfan roots for the purple-and-gold, gripes about unreliable refs. By Shaheem Reid Ice Cube Photo: MTV News Legendary West Coast mic enforcer Ice Cube is excited that the NBA Finals are upon us, but he feels that there may be something shady going on to make sure the Los Angeles Lakers vs. Boston Celtics series is extended as far as it can go. MTV News recently talked ball with Cube, and he insisted his beloved Lake show are the superior team, but the Cs may have some help from the boys-in-stripes, making some shady rulings inevitable during game play. “It’s gonna take [NBA Commissioner] David Stern to stop telling these refs how to ref these games,” Cube said, when asked what he thought it would take for the Lakers to repeat as NBA Champions. “I don’t know if they telling them how to ref these games, but it’s just ridiculous sometimes when I see these refs making sure that the series is extended. Games are leaned towards this team or that team. Every year is the same old dance. Everybody can pick two or three games where you knew the league had their hand in it.” True to Cube’s gripes, there were several questionable calls made during Game 2 of the finals Sunday night at the Staples Center, home of the Lakers. Even the team has had their complaints in the past about the finals officiating. Despite the refs’ calls, Cube said he felt confident his team will triumph over Boston, just like they did over the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference Finals. “What about the Celtics?” Cube asked with a grin. “They can’t beat us four times without help either. They need help from the refs too. Did you see Game 2, when we played them in the finals that year [2008]? Game 2 was ridiculous. Ridiculous! It’s the same thing. It ain’t about the series. It’s about ‘Will it go to Game 6 or Game 7?’ That’s all the league care about.” Still, Cube said it’s purple-and-gold — all the way. “You sound like you got some doubt,” he said like the superfan he is. “Let me put that to rest. We got the team to win it all this year. Put your money on the Lakers.” The Lakers and Celtics play Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Tuesday night. Who are you rooting for in the NBA Finals? Green Food Choice May Not Be So Green

ScienceDaily (Apr. 1, 2010) — If everyone became vegan and so ate only fruit and vegetables, then the reduction in greenhouse emissions for the whole of food consumption would be a mere 7%. The widespread adoption of vegetarianism would have even less impact, while organic food production actually leads to a net increase in greenhouse gas emissions. Those are the conclusions of a research paper published in the journal Progress in Industrial Ecology. Helmi Risku-Norja and Sirpa Kurppa of MTT Agrifood Research Finland, working with Juha Helenius of the Department of Agricultural Sciences, University of Helsinki, have determined that the cultivation of soil for whatever purpose, whether growing crops or raising livestock is the primary source of greenhouse gas emissions in food production, not fertiliser production, animal husbandry, nor agricultural energy requirements. The team explains that for current average food consumption, in Finland, emissions from soil represent 62% of the total emissions. Greenhouses gases released by cows and sheep account for 24%, and energy consumption and fertiliser manufacture about 8% each. The greenhouse emissions performance for extensive organic production is poor, they explain, despite this approach to farming being considered the “green” option, the lower efficiency requires the cultivation of greater areas of soil, which counteracts many of the benefits. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions through food consumption would require large-scale changes among the entire population, the team points out. They suggest that rather than stressing the impact of an individual citizen's dietary choices, we should be paying more attention to social learning and to the notion of working towards food sustainability and security. In general, sustainable consumption might be possible by introducing services to substitute for material consumption. Although food itself cannot be substituted, a lot can be done at the household level to improve sustainability of food provisioning and reduce food wastage. “There is a pressing need to design effective policy measures,” says Risku-Norja. “Consumer information is important from the viewpoint of food and sustainability education, leading eventually to adopting more sustainable lifestyles in the coming generations,” the team concludes. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/04/100401101521.htm added by: versasrev
