By James Dinh Steve Jobs Photo: Getty Images Shortly after Apple announced Wednesday (October 5) that co-founder Steve Jobs had died , celebrities of all kinds — including the president himself — are paying tribute and mourning the loss of the technology giant. “Steve was among the greatest of American innovators — brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it,” President Obama said in a statement. “By building one of the planet’s most successful companies from his garage, he exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity. By making computers personal and putting the internet in our pockets, he made the information revolution not only accessible, but intuitive and fun. And by turning his talents to storytelling, he has brought joy to millions of children and grownups alike. … The world has lost a visionary.” Nicki Minaj took to Twitter to remember that visionary. “An innovator. Contributed so much to this generation & beyond. RIP Steve Jobs,” the Young Money MC wrote shortly after the announcement. Steve Jobs almost singlehandedly brought the music industry into the future — here’s how. Jobs’ longtime rival in the digital race, Microsoft’s Bill Gates, released a heartfelt statement after Apple’s announcement: “I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs’ death. … Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives. The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come. For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.” The Black Eyed Peas’ will i am urged : “i hope the youth chooses to be like steve jobs…we need more innovators.” Remember Steve Jobs’ many innovations by flipping through this photo gallery. Ryan Seacrest offered his remembrance with a quote from the businessman himself, writing , ” ‘Have the courage to follow ur heart & intuition. They already know what u truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.’ – Steve Jobs.” Ellen DeGeneres learned of the news shortly after wrapping up her talk show. “I just finished my show and I heard the news about Steve Jobs,” the comedian tweeted . “He was an amazing man with an incredible vision. He changed the world.” Pharrell Williams referred to Jobs as “our modern day Leonardo da Vinci” on Twitter . “From Apple to Pixar, what a great life lived. He will be missed.” Tyra Banks used one of Apple’s many revolutionary products to mourn the news, tweeting , “As I type on my iPhone, tears spring2 my eyes4an amazingMan I never met. His genius has touched us all. Steve Jobs, you will b/with us 4ever.” The Roots’ ?uestlove remembered Jobs as more than just the Apple co-founder: “Adopted. DropOut. FontLover. LSDlover. Dreamer. ‘Harold & Kumar’ Stars Promise ‘Enhanced Nudity’ In ‘3D Christmas’

‘The movie is in 3-D because the ‘Jersey Shore’ is in 3-D,’ Kal Penn jokes to MTV News in our Fall Movie Preview. By Eric Ditzian Kal Penn and John Cho in “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas” Photo: New Line Cinema Last summer, MTV News got a very special, very twisted look at ” A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas ,” the third installment of Kal Penn and John Cho’s herbaceous buddy-comedy franchise, when we popped by the Detroit set. We can’t yet show you much of what we saw that day, but as part of our Fall Movie Preview, we’re rolling out a tasty nugget of our interview with Penn and Cho. In between cracking jokes about ’80s comedies, MTV programming and potential celebrity cameos, the duo let us know what we can expect when the new film, which focuses on the two estranged friends reuniting during the holidays, hits theaters November 4. Click for exclusive photos from Fall’s biggest flicks. MTV : So why is this movie in 3-D? Kal Penn : The movie is in 3-D because the “Jersey Shore” is in 3-D. John Cho : “Avatar” was in 3-D. I’m not in competition with “Avatar.” I’m not in competition with James Cameron. He does his thing. We do our thing. He makes cartoons. I understand he had a good year. I’m just saying, the technology isn’t his. Penn : I’m just psyched because “Goonies” was in 3-D and that’s why this is in 3-D. You’ve never seen “Goonies.” Cho : I’ve never seen “Goonies.” Penn : That is so crazy to me! That’s so nuts to me, dude. It’s egregious that you haven’t watched “Goonies.” MTV : Can we expect 3-D nakedness? Penn : Listen, you’re going to see some 3-Deeez nuts. [ Sings to the tune of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg’s “Deez Nuuuts” ] Cho : There’s enhanced nudity. Penn : Very ma ture, the way you’re saying that. Enhanced nudity. This is not the NPR interview; this is MTV. They just got done watching Snooki get arrested. You do not have to say anything other than “3-D nuts.” MTV : Have you had time to enjoy Detroit? Cho : I’ve been buying cars. I’ve got a lot of cash, and I’m spending it on automobiles. Lots of ’97 Pontiac Firebirds. Lot of Ford Tauruses. Penn : I like shooting in Detroit. If you have not been to Detroit, you should come. People are super friendly. There are a lot of beautiful buildings, and sadly many of them are abandoned. Hopefully the city bounces back. Look at our first film: I loved shooting in Toronto, but it was still a bummer that we had to leave the United States to shoot a quintessential American road-trip comedy. Cho : Also, Toronto had so many foreigners. Penn : We were the foreigners. Toronto is in a different country. Cho : No, we’re Americans. MTV : Why have Harold and Kumar grown apart? Cho : They’re at different times in their lives. Kumar is looking for a way to stay in his younger existence, and Harold is artificially trying to be more mature and is choosing an excessively old mature friend. MTV : What can we expect in terms of romance? Penn : When the last film left off, Kumar and Vanessa were obviously very much together. Over the next six years, Vanessa moved into Kumar’s apartment. They continued their relationship. It was moving down the road toward marriage. And then Kumar lost his job. He couldn’t stop smoking weed. It wasn’t as much the weed as him completely latching on to still being frivolous and still being down for whatever and not taking Vanessa seriously and taking her for granted. So slowly after he lost Harold to Maria, he kind of grew resentful of the notion that if his best friend could go off and choose this woman over him, then maybe everyone was just out to get him. He drifted further apart from Vanessa. That’s where we pick up now. MTV : Besides Neil Patrick Harris, what celebrity cameos are in the works? Penn : Patton Oswalt, Tom Lennon, Paula Abdul, Snooki and Mayor Koch. From “Abduction” to “Muppets, “Moneyball” to “Breaking Dawn,” the MTV Movies team is delving into the hottest upcoming flicks in our 2011 Fall Movie Preview. ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ Trailer: An Expert Analysis

We break down the first sneak peek of Tom Cruise’s fourth ‘Mission.’ By Eric Ditzian and Josh Wigler Tom Cruise in “Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol” Photo: Paramount The first “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” trailer begins in classic fashion for this epic spy franchise: with a ridiculously destructive explosion. It’s been almost six years, after all, since the previous installment hit theaters, and so this new footage, which popped up online Tuesday evening, delivers the fiery goods early and often. Hit play on the embedded video as we walk through some of the key moments in the trailer, then read on for a deeper exploration of what’s going on in the “Ghost Protocol” footage. The J.J. Abrams Conspiracy Early on, as Tom Wilkinson explains the unachievable mission Tom Cruise and his team will confront, we see Wilkinson flip through a series of digital profiles of the IMF agents. Josh Holloway’s character, it seems, is “disavowed.” Now if you’re a fan of the franchise, you’ll remember that in the third film, Keri Russell (a veteran of producer J.J. Abrams’ “Felicity”) is killed surprisingly early in the action. Our working theory is that we’re in for a similar treat for Holloway, who starred in Abrams’ “Lost.” We don’t see a lot of him in the rest of the trailer, and when you do see him, he’s usually alone. All signs point to Holloway getting an unfortunate, and quite possibly bloody, exit in “Ghost Protocol.” The Brad Bird Comparison Midway through the trailer, we get a moment that clearly harkens back to the first “M:I” movie. As Jeremy Renner flies down into a silo-like structure and the camera follows him from above, we can’t help but think of the moment in the original film in which Cruise, secured via harness, swooped down into a secure CIA facility. While J.J. Abrams has told us “Ghost Protocol” will carry the unmistakable signature of director Brad Bird , who is making his live-action debut after animated fare like “The Incredibles,” it’s hard to see any Birdian touches here. This looks like a “Mission” movie, not a Brad Bird one. And we wonder if, in the finished film, that will still be the case. One of Bird’s signature stylistic traits is action (and interactions) infused with humor, and “M:I” is hardly a franchise that goes for laughs. The Tom Cruise Marathon It would not be a Tom Cruise movie, let alone a “Mission” movie, without a shot of the action star running like the wind. There’s a hilarious YouTube video about this, which is definitely worth watching. But all jokes aside, let’s give Cruise some serious credit: We tend to take him for granted, but the guy is almost 50 years old, and here he’s running, jumping, diving and nearly dying. That’s impressive stuff. The Jeremy Renner Possibility Renner, of “Hurt Locker” fame, is a new face in the franchise; last year, he told MTV News he was being groomed to take over the franchise from Cruise . But that’s not at all the sense we get from the trailer, especially when Cruise suggests Renner is hiding something. First off, Renner is reportedly the front-runner to take over the “Bourne” franchise from Matt Damon, and it’d be odd to have the guy be the face of two separate spy series. And second, based on some of the dialogue in the trailer, there just might be a twist with Renner’s character in “Ghost Protocol.” Is he a villain? Is the trailer just trying to throw us for a loop? Can we possibly have a “Mission” movie in the future that doesn’t feature Cruise himself? The IMAX Grandeur The trailer wraps up with an epic scene in which Tom Cruise scales the Burj Khalifa building in Dubai, the tallest building in the world. This scene is compelling for two reasons. One, it was shot with IMAX cameras, and for all the technical mumbo-jumbo you can get into when talking about this technology, the fact is that watching something shot in IMAX delivers a singularly breathtaking visual scope. “Ghost Protocol” will be worth seeing in an IMAX theater just for this scene. And second, Cruise clearly stole the gloves he wore in “Minority Report” to scale this building, “Spider-Man”-style. Hey, can you blame a guy for trying to sneak a swarm of blockbusters into one film? ‘Transformers’ Director Michael Bay Calls 3-D A ‘Technical Nightmare’

‘I’ve slowed down my style on this one,’ he tells MTV News of adjusting to 3-D for ‘Dark of the Moon.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Michael Bay on the set of “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount Pictures Toward the end of February of last year, as James Cameron’s “Avatar” was crossing the $700 million mark at the domestic box office on its way to a record-shattering worldwide total, “Transformers” director Michael Bay was still not convinced that 3-D was the true future of popcorn moviemaking. “I’ve seen some tests that look great on other movies. I just want to see how it looks on my footage… in terms of a lot of real stuff coming out of the frame, real dirt, real complicated little particles coming towards the lens,” he said at the time by way of revealing that he was considering a 3-D treatment for the third installment of his alien robot franchise. The fact that he’d even arrived at such a testing phase is a credit both to Cameron and “Transformers” exec producer Stephen Spielberg. “Jim Cameron, he’s like, ‘Mike, you got to do it in 3-D,’ ” Bay told MTV News recently. “Stephen Spielberg, he says, ‘Michael, you should do this in 3-D,’ and I’m like, ‘I don’t know about the technology.’ ” In the end, Bay became convinced that the tech was solid. For “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,”he shot, by his own estimation, 60 percent of the finished film using 3-D cameras, another 15 percent consisting of all-digital 3-D shots and 25 percent footage converted from two dimensions to three. And while the director remains happy with the results, he did not mince words in talking about the challenges of working with 3-D cameras. “It’s hard with my style of shooting and taking [a camera] and strapping it to guys who are skydiving off buildings, and helmet cams,” he said. “It’s a technical nightmare. You don’t even want to tell your viewers how technically complicated this stuff is.” To accommodate the limitations of a 3-D presentation, Bay ended up adjusting his often kinetic approach to filmmaking. “I’ve slowed down my style on this one,” he explained. “There are longer shots, there are evolving shots, some shots are 45 seconds long, where you’re going in and through things. Where people say, ‘Oh, I can’t watch action with 3-D,’ it’s where 3-D was done poorly and your eye goes in and out, and if it goes fast, it’s when you get bad 3-D, because it screws with your head. Shot by shot, we’re transitioning the viewer. You can really feel the action in this. It’s much more experiential.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Has Technology Made Us More Awkward?

Excerpt from:

Yesterday, as I was walking back from the train station after a long day at work, I ran into someone I knew on the way home. After we exchanged greetings and we proceeded to chat, it quickly became hard to hold a conversation as we both seemed lost in our own worlds. We had both not been expecting this chance meeting and were tired from work, but I later realized that there was more to that encounter than just lethargy from the end of the day. I had spent most of the train ride on my phone surfing the internet and reading a book, which are both very solitary activities. The bulk of my job requires me to be on my laptop, so obviously I have become very accustomed over the years to communicating online. I even find myself making lunch plans through e-mail, even though the person I’m messaging is in the same side of the building. Ordinary face-to-face contact has become an alternate reality to sites such as Facebook and Twitter, where you can post your day-to-day thoughts and send messages instantly from person to person. You don’t even have to open your mouth or leave your chair anymore to be able to ask people questions or find out about their daily life. The addition of the internet onto cell phones has also become a gateway to instant gratification and can sometimes even spawn new friendships if you are too shy to speak to someone on a more personal level. However, if you really think about it, what is technology doing to the fundamental social skills that people have to learn and cultivate? If you can’t talk to someone in person and you resort to e-mailing or Facebook-ing them, is that really the start to a healthy relationship? While there are definitely some advantages to the technology that have made communication easier in the long run, there are still some drawbacks in the way people relate to each other with this changing technology. Is Social Networking Bad For Your Child? Thinking back to even ten years ago, cell phones were less advanced and social networks were not the ultimate gathering place. E-mail was still important and frequently used, but you couldn’t access it as easily as you can with today’s rash of Smart-phones. The latter has actually become something of interest to me as of late, as I just recently invested in an iPhone. Being able to access your Facebook account or e-mail on the run can be a blessing and a curse, as having so much connectivity can be helpful, as well as distracting. While it might be great to be able to look up street directions or a song that you heard on the radio, sometimes the urge to check one’s phone for new messages can end up replacing human-to-human interaction. Despite the new distractions, I was recently discussing the merits of cell phones and computers with a friend at lunch today and we were both in awe of how we survived without them for so long. Mailing letters and stopping by at people’s houses unannounced seems foreign to us in this day and age, since the fast-paced world has made people accessible at an instant. Ways of communicating are constantly changing, yet this new evolution has left the younger generation less likely to engage in true face-to-face conversation. According to the New York Times , college students have even started using text messages as a way of resolving roommate conflicts, despite the fact that they could be discussing it right in their own room! Have text messages become the new voice, making us strangers of interpersonal connection? It’s important to take yourself away from your technology once in a while, putting away your phone and simply sitting down for coffee with a friend without distractions. Basic communication skills like eye contact and a listening ear are vital in forming bonds with other people and something we should continue to cultivate, despite the changing times with new media replacing what was once commonplace interaction. When you “unplug” yourself from the web of technology, even if for a short amount of time, there is much to be learned from simply talking to others and keeping the human aspect of communication alive. Never forget the foundation of human interaction, which involves the bare bones of creating a relationship with the other person. It is very hard to find connections through simple text, as the words have to have some emotion that only the human voice, facial expressions, and general presence can provide. By breaking the barriers that technology has built around us, using our face-to-face times as serious communication can help bring us out of our awkward funk and back into a world where machines don’t dominate our social lives! ‘Transformers’ Stars Survive ‘Jumping Through Fire’

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley says ‘Dark of the Moon’ director Michael Bay usually had her ‘hiding underneath something that was about to explode.’ By Jocelyn Vena Rosie Huntington-Whiteley Photo: MTV News It’s almost a given that stunt work on a flick like “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” would be intense. The cast of the Michael Bay-directed movie expected as much, and they were more than up for the challenge. “I loved doing the stunts,” Rosie Huntington-Whiteley told MTV News, adding that she thought Bay “really respected a girl that could get her hands dirty.” “Dark of the Moon,” which hits theaters on June 29, is Huntington-Whiteley’s first appearance in the franchise but she seemed to revel in all of the action. “Everything was a first for me, so it was super exhilarating and exciting. … And we had a lot of fun filming. Every day was a crazy day on set and I think maybe half the time, I was in a harness or jumping through fire or I was running through gunfire or, like, hiding underneath something that was about to explode.” SEE PHOTOS OF ROSIE HUNTINGTON-WHITELEY AND MORE STARS ON THE MOVIE AWARDS RED-CARPET. Fellow “Transformers” newcomer Patrick Dempsey was equally into it, dishing about the technology Bay used to show the cast how he wanted certain scenes to turn out. “I had some sequences; a lot of explosions,” he said. “He was very good about showing us what the sequence would be like on his iPad. That helped tremendously.” Three films in, Josh Duhamel and Shia LaBeouf were looking forward to getting in on the action, even if it seemed dangerous. “A lot of the times they don’t let us do stuff like that, but Shia and I both teamed up on Michael to let us do this one stunt,” Duhamel recalled. “It was pretty nuts. They tied us on to these latches and they yank you 50 feet up in the air and they yank you back up, but it turned out to be really fun and this is the reason why I love these movies, ’cause you get to do stuff you don’t get to do otherwise.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
