Students swap Bibles for porn. At the University of Texas San Antonio campus, a college atheist group is offering students pornography in exchange for Bibles, Korans, or other religious texts. The group, Atheist Agenda, calls the exchange “Smut for Smut”. Group members claim that the Bible and other religious texts are just as as smutty as any pornography. http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-10853-Portland-Humanist-Examiner~y2010m3d4-Re… added by: locutus

Final Johnny Cash album debuts at #3. By Gil Kaufman Sade’s Soldier Of Love Photo: Epic Sade has done it again. The mysterious chanteuse will notch her third week in a row at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart next week with her Soldier of Love album. According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, thanks to another slow week for new releases, the Nigerian-born singer moved another 127,000 copies of her first album in 10 years, for a three-week total topping 820,000. The only other debut in the top 10 was a posthumous disc from late country giant Johnny Cash, American VI: Ain’t No Grave, containing some of the final recordings from the singer, including covers of tunes by Sheryl Crow, Kris Kristofferson and Tom Paxton. The Rick Rubin-produced disc sold 54,000 in its debut week. The rest of the top 10 was largely unchanged: Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now (#2, 118,000), Black Eyed Peas ‘ The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) (#4, 50,000), Lady Gaga ‘s The Fame (#5, 48,000), Lil Wayne ‘s Rebirth (#6, 38,000), Ke$ha ‘s Animal (#7, 32,000), Susan Boyle ‘s I Dreamed a Dream (#8, 30,000), Taylor Swift ‘s Fearless (#9, 28,000) and Justin Bieber ‘s My World (#10, 26,000). Just outside the top 10, landing at #11 was long-running punk band Alkaline Trio , whose This Addiction moved nearly 26,000 copies, while further down the list was Texas emo act the Rocket Summer , the solo project from Stephen Bryce Avary, which hit #38 with album #4, Of Men and Angels (13,000). The ambitious three-album set from freak-folk queen Joanna Newsom , Have One On Me , had an impressive debut at #74 on sales of more than 7,000, while last year’s “American Idol” winner, Kris Allen , got a huge bump from his Haiti benefiting appearance on the show last week, which bumped his self-titled debut up 57 spots to #81 (7,000) as sales leaped 61 percent. A bit further down the line, producer to the stars Butch Walker (Pink, Katy Perry, Weezer) waltzed into the #116 spot with I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart (5,000), and another former “Idol,” last season’s #4 finisher, Allison Iraheta , moved back onto the charts at #161 with her debut, Just Like You , (3,000) which also benefited from a performance spot on last week’s “Idol” and pushed the disc to nearly 90,000 in sales to date. Sade could have some company next week, when the debut from Jason Derulo finally hits the charts, along with new ones from country singer Blake Shelton , Lifehouse , the debut from “Idol” vet Danny Gokey , a posthumous Jimi Hendrix album and Peter Gabriel ‘s eclectic covers collection. Rapper’s partner DJ Premier tweets, ‘Keep sending him love,’ after rapper reportedly suffered heart attack. By Gil Kaufman, with additional reporting by Jayson Rodriguez Gang Starr’s Guru Photo: Gregg Delman Gang Starr MC Guru underwent successful surgery on Monday, according to DJ Premier. Premier, Guru’s partner in the long-running hip-hop outfit, tweeted the news Tuesday morning (March 2), writing, (“good news: Guru surgery was successful, keep sending him love.” Premier did not specify what the surgery was for or what the MC’s current condition was, and spokespeople for Guru could not be reached at press time for further information on the rapper’s medical condition. Guru suffered what has been described as a massive heart attack over the weekend, and according to reports was in a coma as of Monday. Premier began offering updates on the surgery late Monday night, writing, “Guru still in surgery, keep on praying people, he will make it.” An unnamed source told AllHipHop.com that the rapper was doing “fine” and is expected to make a full recovery. “Guru is alive and recovering from his surgery. Doctors are expecting a full recovery luckily.” Hot 97’s news director Miss Info reported Monday that Guru was in a New York-area hospital where he was expected to undergo surgery. One of Guru’s former collaborators, French MC Solaar, issued a statement on Monday in which he said, “Guru is struggling with a serious health issue. We, the whole 7 Grand Records family, appreciate all your love and well wishes. We continue to hold out hope that Guru will make a full recovery from this. We ask that his privacy on this matter will be respected. Again, thank you for all your support through this trying time.” Composed of Guru (born Keith Elam in Massachusetts) and Premier (born Christopher Martin in Texas), Gang Starr teamed together to help define the New York underground rap sound in the early ’90s. Premier’s production palette featured sampled jazz records and scratched vocals on the choruses, complemented Guru’s uncompromising rhymes. Although the pair would work separately as often as they did together — Guru’s Jazzmatazz series of albums and Premier’s work with Nas, Jay-Z, and underground act Group Home — Gang Starr continued to release critically acclaimed material throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s. Their 1998 album Moment of Truth was among their most critically lauded collections and Gang Starr’s biggest selling project to date. Gang Starr’s last group project, The Ownerz, was released in 2003. Guru spoke with MTV News at the time, noting the pair’s penchant for working on outside projects, but ultimately continuing to stoke the Gang Starr flames. “You went on your little vacation, but you come back home with a bunch of skills and other things to add to the table,” he said. “When we do Gang Starr it always gets more and more intense.” Related Artists Gang Starr

Comedian jokes about Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest during Friday’s episode of her talk show. By Gil Kaufman Ellen DeGeneres and Randy Jackson on Wednesday’s “American Idol” Photo: FOX Let’s face it: everyone had a rough first week on “American Idol.” The guys, for the most part, tanked, and the women were only marginally better. Even the judges had some difficulties, with Simon Cowell looking visibly bored at times, the other panelists seeming a bit off and new addition to the panel from the same case of nerves that affected many of the contestants. But no matter what the critics say, Ellen had a blast at her new gig. The veteran comedian discussed her first week of live “Idol” shows on the episode of her talk show airing Friday (February 26). “It’s been a fun week,” she told her in-studio audience. “I’ll tell ya, I like being live because anything can happen on live television.” Despite being seated at the other end of the judges’ table from Cowell, DeGeneres said that one of the British judge’s plunging necklines allowed her to get an eyeful of his chest on Thursday night. “Yesterday, Simon had so many buttons open on his shirt he almost had a wardrobe malfunction,” she joked. DeGeneres spent some time talking about the differences between watching “Idol” at home and experiencing it live. “I’ve watched from home for years and years and now I get to see what happens behind the scenes. It’s different, very different. I always knew that Ryan worked hard, but I had no idea during the commercial breaks he works another job selling Mary Kay cosmetics.” After discussing the in-studio sound of the contestants’ live vocals, she reiterated how “totally different” the music comes across in person than it does on television. “The mix is different in the studio, so everyone sounds one way in the studio and then I go home and I listen to it,” she said. “You know, in the studio Simon has a Texas accent and he’s the sweetest guy. He’s totally hairless. Totally different, totally.” DeGeneres is bringing a blend of good-natured comedy and boundless enthusiasm for “Idol” to the judges’ panel, and she continued that vibe on her own show on Friday. “It’s really exciting, though. There’s energy and excitement in the studio, and there is a lot of suspense,” she said. “That’s what they do. They build up tension and nerves. I won’t do that to you, though. I’m going to tell right now who I think is going to win. I think the person who’s going to win is … a girl or a guy.” Ellen will be back judging the 20 remaining hopefuls next Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday night, four more contestants will be sent home, and last year’s third-place finisher Danny Gokey will perform his new single, “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘American Idol’ contestant makes a song by the world’s most famous band her own. By Larry Carroll Lilly Scott on ‘American Idol’ Tuesday Photo: Fox She’s not Eleanor Rigby, she’s not Maxwell with his silver hammer and she certainly isn’t Sgt. Pepper. But on tonight’s “American Idol,” final 24 contestant Lilly Scott took center stage with a unique spin on another classic song by the world’s greatest rock band and judges were unable to find any holes in her performance. Scott — or, as Ryan Seacrest describes her, “the pride of Denver” — covered “Fixing a Hole” by the Beatles, one of the lesser-known classics off their 1967 Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, a record largely considered to be among the greatest albums ever made. To many, stepping into the shoes of Lennon and McCartney would be a daunting task. But Scott took center stage with nothing but a guitar, green dress and Anna Faris-like haircut and made it her own. “That’s what we’re talking about!” Ellen DeGeneres praised her after the performance. “You have such a unique voice!” Kara DioGuardi agreed, saying, “You’re unbelievable. Everyone is gonna remember you tonight.” Even difficult Simon Cowell had a hard time finding fault, calling her moment in the spotlight among “the best we’ve had so far. You sang this song because it portrayed you as an artist.” Written by Paul McCartney, “Hole” was the fifth song on the Beatles’ groundbreaking concept album. Over the years, its use of words like “hole” and “fix” — and its psychedelic vibe — have led many to believe it is about heroin injection. Other theories include everything from it being about holes in the road to holes in the roof of the Scottish farmhouse McCartney owned at the time. The rock legend did admit in a 1967 that the lyric “See the people standing there/ Who disagree, and never win/ And wonder why they don’t get in my door” was a reference to the fans who hung around the front door of his home in those days. As for 20-year-old Scott from Littleton, Colorado, she auditioned in Denver after a period spent performing locally with a band called Varlet and time spent as a street musician. Citing her main influences as indie and classic rock, she began her path to “Idol” when she sang the national anthem at Mile High Stadium at only 5 years old.
