Selena Gomez: I Never Wanted to Be a Role Model

Selena Gomez never wanted to be a role model. However, the 18-year-old actress and singer has learned to embrace it anyway, she says in the upcoming E! Entertainment Special: Selena Gomez . “I’m human, I’m not perfect,” Gomez admits . “I make mistakes all the time, but I guess my job is to keep those mistakes to myself, which I’m already fine doing and just try to be the best I can be for those kids.” Being a role model isn’t easy when you’re still growing up yourself . “I never really said I want to be a role model. But when it happened I was so down for it,” Gomez admits, having just been hospitalized due to malnourishment and exhaustion, which led to her mom telling her to slow down . She’s doing better now, but it’s an ongoing battle. While the Texas-born beauty has enjoyed much success at a young age, she didn’t have an easy childhood and struggled with her parents’ divorce. Gomez’s high-profile romance with Justin Bieber has made headlines, making it tough to stay comfortable in the spotlight and manage her fame. “This is a very superficial job,” Gomez says. “I sit in a chair for two hours and get hair and makeup done and talk about [myself] in interviews.” “That’s a very vain thing to do. I do get caught up in it sometimes.” Give her credit for recognizing the pitfalls of celebrity at such a young age and trying to keep life in perspective as well as a teenager possibly can. We wish her all the best. For a look at Selena’s latest musical effort, follow this link and listen to ” Whiplash ,” a collaboration with Britney Spears! [Photo: WENN.com]

While comedians are expected to keep their cool over hecklers, the stakes were a little different for Mike Epps recently. Lady Gaga, 30 Seconds To Mars, Tokio Hotel Take Home O Music Awards

Chiddy’s record-breaking rap and performances from Lupe Fiasco and Matt and Kim light up Las Vegas. By Aimee Curran Lady Gaga (file) Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage On Thursday night (April 28), MTV’s first-ever O Music Awards took over Las Vegas. With performances and award presentations streamed from all over the world, the digital awards show recognized “about every gigabyte of music activity known to man,” according to hosts (and rock duo) Matt and Kim. The pair hosted the show from Vegas’ famed Fremont Street and kicked off the O Music Awards with a two-song set before introducing Cee Lo Green, who logged online to present the Most Innovative Artist Award to Lady Gaga. Gaga, who, according to Cee Lo, did “the best job saying ‘f— you’ to rules,” graciously accepted the O cube along with the award for Must Follow Artist on Twitter and told her following, “To all the monsters watching, surge on.” Chiddy Bang’s Chidera “Chiddy” Anamege used the O Music Awards as a platform to successfully beat the nine hour and 16 minute “Longest Freestyle Rap” Guinness World Record with a time of nine hours, 18 minutes and 22 seconds. He celebrated the feat by debuting his brand-new single “No One Like Me” to the Vegas crowd, complete with Mr. T, Kiss, Bret Michaels and Pee-wee Herman impersonators. Performances by Lupe Fiasco and Foster the People were neatly laced into the awards show, but the topper was Mumford & Sons, along with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show’s Austin, Texas, hoedown. Although he wasn’t nominated for any awards, Justin Bieber inadvertently became a star of the show when Lil B’s “Justin Bieber” video was shown, pumping up fans for the Best NSFW Video Award that went to 30 Seconds to Mars’ “Hurricane.” Accepting the award in a bathroom (as they are currently on tour), Jared Leto seemed genuinely excited and thanked fans for the support. Alex Goot, who won Best Fan Cover Award for his rendition of Britney Spears “Hold It Against Me,” followed up his win by singing a sweet and softly sung cover of “Don’t Let Me Fall” by B.o.B. Obviously no online awards show would be complete without the presence of pop-culture wunderkind Rebecca Black, who started her weekend early by “holding it down” at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino to host the Fan Army Party. Encouraging viewers to vote for their Favorite Fan Army, it was the last award of the night and went to Tokio Hotel’s Aliens. Did the O Music Awards get it right? Let us know in the comments! Coming To A Public School Near You: Gay Studies???

Over forty years ago, African Americans demanded public school districts and other educational institutions to reform their curriculum in order to reflect the experiences and histories of folks other than white men. Those opposed to the curriculum change argued that inclusion of the civil rights movement and notable black figures would challenge religious values and politicize the curriculum. Nevertheless, in the years that followed, other ethnic groups and women would follow suit and push schools to revise their curriculum to be more reflective of United States history. These battles over what and whom should be included in public school curricula are far from over; e.g., Texas State Board of Education approves revising textbooks to eliminate the civil rights movement, and Mississippi becomes the first state to implement a civil rights curriculum for grades K through 12. But it appears that public school curricula may undergo an entirely new makeover with the recent news that the state of California is close to becoming the first state to require the teaching of gay history.
