Jake Pavelka Kicked Off Dancing with the Stars

After a mediocre samba and poor finish in the group swing marathon, you knew Jake Pavelka was running on fumes. Last night, he sputtered out. Kicked off Dancing with the Stars after a six-week run, he now knows how those aspiring wives who went home each week without a rose felt like. Oh, wait, he was kicked off The Bachelorette too. Never mind. “This is, I think, the best season of Dancing With [the] Stars I’ve seen,” Jake Pavelka said of his experience. “I was so honored to be here.” “I enjoyed every second. I want to thank Texas, I want to thank all the Mavericks fans, Canada, all the tweets, Facebook … thank you for keeping me here for six episodes. I can’t even put it into words how much I enjoyed this.” Where, oh where, will Jake resurface on reality TV next? To partner Chelsie Hightower, who kinda resembles another certain petite blond Jake loves, he said: “You’re one of my best friends. I have loved every second of this. I love you. Thank you for being so great to my beautiful fianc

Conan O’Brien Brings Out Jim Carrey, More Celeb Pals At L.A. Show

Aziz Ansari, Jonah Hill and Jon Hamm also join Team Coco for the Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour. By Katie Byrne Conan O’Brien on stage during his “Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Televison Tour” Photo: Noel Vasquez/ Getty UNIVERSAL CITY, California — For seven short months, Conan O’Brien hosted “The Tonight Show” on the Universal Studios back lot. In a full-circle moment on Saturday night, the comedian brought his Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour to Universal Studios’ Gibson Amphitheatre, a mere 400 yards from his old stage. “This is my first time back at Universal Studios since I lost my job,” O’Brien announced to the sold-out crowd, causing the Conan-crazy fans to boo his former employer, NBC. “Don’t boo too loudly. If you listen very carefully, you can hear bad ideas being green-lit.” Aside from occasional jabs at O’Brien’s old network, the traveling variety show was nothing but a love-fest between TBS’ newest late-night host and his devoted fanbase. O’Brien even brought a few extra-special treats to L.A. (since his celeb pals didn’t have to travel too far to join him onstage), including appearances by Jonah Hill, 2010 MTV Movie Awards host Aziz Ansari and Jim Carrey as Superman. Conan O’Brien’s ‘Legally Prohibited’ Tour Invades L.A. After lamenting how tough it is to be Conan O’Brien, the funnyman launched into Five for Fighting’s “Superman (It’s Not Easy)” only to be joined in the second verse by Carrey, who emerged from the crowd in red-and-blue tights. The pair hammed it up during the duet, trading over-the-top vocal runs and awkward dance moves. The real guest-star cavalcade came during the “Walker, Texas Ranger” Lever , a staple from Conan’s late-night shows that (for legal reasons) will now be known as the Chuck Norris Rural Policeman Handle. Ansari, Hill, “Mad Men” star Jon Hamm and “30 Rock” page Jack MacBrayer all took turns pulling the handle to activate ridiculous (and completely real) “Walker” scenes. “I’m just glad I’m not one of the guys who works for NBC pulling the handle,” Hamm quipped, pointing out Ansari’s and MacBrayer’s day jobs on Peacock comedies. Conan bestie Andy Richter, former “Tonight Show” writer Deon Cole and Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog also got in on the action with bits throughout the two-hour show. Comedian Reggie Watts kick-started the night with 20 ridiculous minutes of accents, beatboxing and unintelligible lyrics. O’Brien will be back on the Gibson stage Sunday night (April 25) before heading to San Diego on Thursday. Are you planning to see Conan’s tour? Are you looking forward to his TBS show? ‘American Idol’ Experts Say Tim Urban Tried Too Hard

‘He made an ambitious song choice this week and it did him in,’ one expert says. By Gil Kaufman Tim Urban Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images There are worse ways to fail than being too ambitious or too nice. But for booted “American Idol” finalist “Teflon” Tim Urban, it was a combination of his sunny persona and decision to stretch outside his comfort zone that contributed to his undoing on the show. After Urban was eliminated during Wednesday night’s “Idol Gives Back” special, some “Idol” experts said they weren’t shocked — and might have been a bit relieved. “Tim Urban was the little engine that could … not stop smiling,” said MTV News’ “American Idol” expert Jim Cantiello . “He went from being one of the worst semi-finalists to being one of the most well-liked contestants in a matter of weeks thanks to his ‘kill ’em with kindness’ attitude toward the especially nasty judges.” Even though Simon Cowell was annoyed by Urban’s grin-and-bear-it persona and often denigrated the Texas singer’s iffy chops, Cantiello said the mop-toppers’ undoing was deviating from his proven formula: singing songs with limited range that he could mostly nail. “That Goo Goo Dolls tune [“Better Days”] was way too big, too obscure and not romantic enough for him to make memorable,” said Cantiello, who actually thought it was Casey James’ time to go on Wednesday night. “Previously, his failures were AWESOME ones. Remember when he turned the Rolling Stones ‘Under My Thumb’ into a campfire reggae sing-along? Or when he decided to croon ‘Sweet Love’ while limping toward the front of the stage like a horror villain?” Like another finalist with limited skills (to whom he was often compared), Sanjaya, Cantiello said once Urban delivered a performance that lacked in water-cooler buzz, America dropped him like a cold bowl of soup. That said, Cantiello wouldn’t be surprised if Urban could still carve out a decent music career. “The guy’s got the looks and the personality and enough of a voice to cut a marketable album,” he said. “Or maybe I was just brainwashed by his gaze.” Another “Idol” expert, MJ Santilli of , also didn’t predict Urban’s ouster this week — she went with Aaron Kelly — but said it was clearly Tim’s time to go. “Tim did well as long as he chose songs within his very limited vocal range,” she said. “He made an ambitious song choice this week and it did him in. His pitchy, uneven vocals overruled his sincerity. Having said that, Tim didn’t really have much left in his tank anyway. He had a good, solid run for a contestant with so few vocal gifts.” MJ sees modeling and acting in Urban’s future, or possibly a shot at another reality gig. “If Jason Gaston moves out of the ‘If I Can Dream’ house, Tim could take his place as the resident hottie.” Do you think Tim Urban should have been sent home this week, or did America get it wrong? Joss Stone And Jeff Beck Get Steamy On ‘Idol Gives Back’

British duo put a bluesy twist on ‘I Put a Spell on You’ for the fundraising effort. By James Montgomery Joss Stone (file) Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images Wednesday night’s (April 21) “Idol Gives Back” event featured performances by everyone from the Black Eyed Peas to Annie Lennox, but it was a pair of Brits — and a swampy, often-overlooked American tune that pre-dates most rock and roll — that ended up being one of the night’s most memorable moments. Singer Joss Stone and legendary guitarist Jeff Beck turned in a simmering, smoky take on Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ 1956 stomper “I Put a Spell on You” — a song that has been covered by a lengthy list of artists, including Nina Simone and Shane McGowan — which managed to take the soulful, primal urges of the original (and most of the covers) and infuse them with both blues and R&B. Backed by the Jubilation Choir, and aided by a four-piece band, Stone and Beck let the song build to a boil, with the 23-year-old Stone starting out sparse, then gradually adding more gravel and gut to her voice, while Beck added flecks of bluesy guitar that eventually erupted into a fret-bending, note-melding solo. The tune grew and grew, with Stone — dressed in a silver, floor-length gown — vamping across the stage, bending low to draw the notes out of her lungs, while the choir added ominous backup, and Beck, the old pro playing it cool, guiding the song with his reserved, almost flirtatious playing. Eventually, when things got too hot, Beck, the band and the choir all fell away, leaving only Stone to take the song home. And with one great, breathy bellow, she did just that, going low once again, letting the grit come to the forefront. And as she wailed, Beck brought the band back in to wrap it all up. And as the audience cheered, the duo embraced in the middle of the stage. What did you think of Joss and Jeff’s duet? Let us know in the comments below! Tim Urban Sent Packing During ‘Idol Gives Back’

Elimination came after a night of all-star performances and fundraising pleas. By Gil Kaufman Tim Urban on “American Idol” (file) Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Wednesday night’s (April 21) “American Idol” was focused on “Idol Gives Back,” so the two-hour-plus show devoted most of the airtime to raising funds for children’s charities with a series of celebrity pleas and performances from Mary J. Blige , Carrie Underwood, Elton John, the Black Eyed Peas and several others. But there was an elimination to take care of, and after visiting the bottom three on three earlier occasions, the sand finally ran out of the hourglass for Texas singer Tim Urban. A Look Back At Tim Urban’s ‘Idol’ Journey With help from comedian George Lopez, the first step toward cutting the group down to six came with a role reversal, as Lopez judged the judges for a change. He told Randy Jackson to come up with something to say besides “pitchy” and encouraged Kara DioGuardi to formulate her own thoughts, giving both of them a pass and declaring them safe. Addressing his pal Ellen DeGeneres, whom he faulted for loving too much, and Simon Cowell, whose size-small T-shirts and flirtation with Ryan Seacrest he mocked, Lopez gave Ellen the pass but said Cowell had to return to England immediately. Because of the Icelandic volcano, though, he said Cowell could hang out. That made way for Ryan Seacrest to call Casey James and Crystal Bowersox center stage, where he sent James to the bottom three for the first time this season after a lackluster Fleetwood Mac cover. MamaSox was sent back to safety after her emotional performance on Tuesday night. Next up were Lee Dewyze and Aaron Kelly, with the high-schooler taking a seat next to James in the bottom three after a lukewarm response from the judges for his cover of R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly.” Siobhan Magnus, Michael Lynche and Urban were the last group to face Seacrest, with Urban ending up in the bottom three yet again after America agreed with Ellen that his rendition of the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Better Days” just wasn’t their cup of soup. With the show running more than 20 minutes over, the elimination was finally due, as Seacrest sent Kelly to safety yet again, followed by James. Calling Tim the “comeback kid,” Seacrest stood next to the always-smiling mop-topped singer. As he watched his goodbye segment, Urban was surrounded by the final six, though he did not get a chance to sing one more time, likely because of the show running so far over. Next week’s mentor will be country icon Shania Twain, and the remaining six-pack will choose from her songs during Tuesday night’s performance show. What did you think of Tim Urban’s elimination? ‘American Idol’ Experts Predict The Boot For Casey James Or Aaron Kelly

Despite shaky performances, Tim Urban and Michael Lynche should be safe. By Gil Kaufman Casey James Photo: Fox The theme on Tuesday night’s “American Idol” was inspirational songs, but with the exception of Crystal Bowersox’s tearful “People Get Ready,” many of the night’s performances were uninspired at best. While that might make picking who could be eliminated during Wednesday night’s (April 21) “Idol Gives Back” charity extravaganza harder, for MTV News’ “Idol” expert Jim Cantiello , the choice is clear. ” ‘Jealous Guy’ notwithstanding, Casey James’ performances have all been the same thing over and over again,” Cantiello said of the pony-tailed Texas guitar slinger, who has carved out a blues-rock niche on the show. “It was only a matter of time before America grew impatient with his lack of growth. Furthermore, it was a night that was supposed to inspire, and thanks to passionate performances from Lee Dewyze and especially Crystal Bowersox it definitely did uplift the spirit at times, but Casey left me stone-cold.” Cantiello said he didn’t have a visceral reaction to James’ cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop” the way he did to equally shaky performances from Tim Urban and Aaron Kelly, who he also predicted would land in the bottom three alongside James. “It’s never a good thing to go first and deliver a forgettable sound-alike performance,” he said of James. “But what tipped me off to Casey’s impending departure? The crowd didn’t boo Kara, Randy or Ellen when they panned his performance. You could hear a pin drop. Casey had obviously put the entire studio audience to sleep.” The view was a bit cloudier for MJ Santilli, founder of the “Idol” fan site MJsBigBlog.com . She thought “Teflon” Tim Urban got ambitious with his cover of the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Better Days,” which got universal pans from the judge’s panel for failing to live up to his more solid performances over the past two weeks. “But I still think he’s amassed enough of a following to keep him safe this week,” she said, adding that she thinks Michael Lynche “is probably not long for this world, but he performed near the end of the lineup, and when Simon Cowell makes statements like ‘You’ll probably still be here next week,’ they usually come true.” And while she found James to be “safe and boring,” she thought his fan base was strong enough to keep him in it, so it was perennially on-the-bubble teen Aaron Kelly who she targeted as this week’s boot-ee. “[He’s] been on the cusp the past couple of weeks,” she noted of the sometimes awkward high schooler, who failed to deliver sufficient emotion on his take of R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly.” “Once again, he bit off more than he could chew last night. And even though he gave it a good try, it was a mediocre vocal and an awkward performance. I think he’ll be heading back to smalltown Pennsylvania very soon.” One things is for sure, MJ said: After coming close to seriously turning off “Idol” hardcores with news that she was on the verge of quitting the show, Bowersox’s bravura performance brought her all the way back into their good graces. “She came back with a fantastic performance, showed some vulnerability — finally — and even, wordlessly made amends with Seacrest,” said MJ. “Honestly, she’s going to be hard to beat at this point. And it’s not as if any one of the remaining seven comes close to her talent, confidence, and performance skills.” What do you think of our experts’ predictions? Do you agree? Disagree? Dr. Conrad Murray Facing Civil, Criminal Woes

As we previously reported, Dr. Conrad Murray is the subject of a wrongful death lawsuit, in addition to criminal charges (manslaughter) regarding Michael Jackson. The embattled former physician of the late icon has thus retained a civil lawyer, Charles Peckham, who handles medical board cases and wrongful death lawsuits. His criminal defense is likely based on these claims about Jackson . His civil defense is likely to fall along similar lines, but there is the matter of who’s paying for it. The lawyer has been in touch with Dr. Murray’s malpractice insurance carrier, which has revealed a particularly tricky situation, even by Conrad Murray standards. Apparently, Dr. Murray had a malpractice policy issued in Texas that covered his medical practices in Texas and Nevada … but of course, MJ died in California . Murray did not have a medical practice in California, which is a prerequisite for his malpractice coverage, even though he treated Jackson almost exclusively there. So Dr. Murray’s defense is that he first saw Michael Jackson as a Nevada patient and what he did for him in L.A. was merely an extension of the Nevada treatment. Whether that holds up under examination by the legal system remains to be seen, but it’s crucial because malpractice policy covers civil litigation, but not criminal. In the event the doctor is sued for wrongful death, and Joe Jackson will do the honors, Murray expects the policy would cover attorney’s fees and any judgment. We suspect the insurance company will argue otherwise. Murray is expected to argue that Michael killed himself with Propofol and the doctor is not responsible.
