Man Threatens East Point Mayor At Chaotic Town Hall Meeting [VIDEO]

Read the rest here:

All hell broke loose last night at a town hall meeting in East Point that was supposed to be a civil discussion about East Point Mayor Earnestine Pittman’s proposed property tax increase to offset a rollback in utility rates. Apparently both subjects were heated topics for the angry crowd who showed up for the event. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that within two hours, police had ejected four attendees, and an elderly man had challenged a middle-age man to a fist fight. One man angrily charged towards Mayor Pittman and had to be forcefully restrained by East Point police after initially breaking free of their grasp. Mayor Pittman was forced to end the meeting early. ‘Project X’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics call the found-footage teen movie immature, unfunny and even dangerous. By Kevin P. Sullivan Jonathan Daniel Brown, Oliver Cooper and Thomas Mann in “Project X” Photo: Beth Dubber/ Warner Bros. “Project X” is the new found-footage movie that claims to show the most out-of-control party ever. Well, it seems like the party might be over based on the reviews the film has earned. Critics have skewered “Project X,” calling it immature, unfunny and even dangerous. For some, that might sound like a ringing endorsement of the party, but when it comes to throwing a movie together, “Project X” is much less successful. Here is our roundup of “Project X” reviews. The Story “In suburban Pasadena, three exceedingly ordinary high school dudes stage a birthday bash for one of them, even though they’re hardly the sort of guys that you’d expect to attract a hot crowd. Thomas (Thomas Mann), the one turning 17, whose parents are going away for the weekend, is the dutiful son who has promised — oh, has he promised! — not to mess up their home.” — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly The Laughs “It’s billed as a comedy, but there’s not a laugh to be had during the frenetic mayhem. There is also no plot beyond debauchery, nor characters beyond cardboard cutouts. Basically, it’s a setting, and a familiar one: a suburban home teeming with drunken, druggie, hedonistic, irresponsible high-schoolers.” — Claudia Puig, USA Today The POV “Aesthetically, the film sets the teeth grinding and the eyes aching. Presenting the spectacle from the p.o.v. of a home video camera documenting the event for posterity, first-time director Nima Nourizadeh and cinematographer Ken Seng swing the camera around with all the stability of a rowboat in a storm and unsurprisingly induce a strong facsimile of seasickness. The images tend to be dark and random, the music incessant.” — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter The Parents in the Audience “But only about an hour in, ‘Project X’ grows repetitive and starts running out of steam, and you begin to wonder what could possibly occur over the remaining 30 minutes or so. And not to get all mom-ish, but it does send a disturbing message to teens under the guise of ‘edgy’ entertainment. If you provide a setting and the means for strangers to get hammered, it will make you cool. If you are a young woman who wants approval, you must get naked and give up the goods.” — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press The Final Word “The only people likely to buy into the oh-so-shocking exploits of the teen comedy ‘Project X’ are those who can’t get invited to their own high school parties. Though the central blowout is as epic as advertised, so is the movie’s self-congratulatory obnoxiousness.” — Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News Check out everything we’ve got on “Project X.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

A “Lil Positivity”: Dwyane Wade And His Wade’s World Foundation Host A Slew Of Charity Events During NBA All-Star Weekend

Good for D-Wade: Miami HEAT guard, Dwyane Wade, has hosted his 5th Annual All-Star Weekend charity events during NBA All-Star Weekend in Orlando, Florida this weekend. Although the weekend has been filled with appearances and All-Star festivities, Wade’s mission, as always, was to contribute to the improvement of young lives in the local community and to encourage fathers to play an active role in the lives of their children. To kick off the All-Star Weekend festivities, Wade hosted the “Fatherhood Heroes” Roundtable Discussions event with special guests from the White House Office of Faith-Based & Neighborhood Partnerships and Office of Public Engagement. Together they helped shine a positive spotlight on responsible dads and moms who support responsible fatherhood in the Orlando community. The event honored and recognized those whose lives and work exemplify the goals of the President’s Fatherhood & Mentoring Initiative. Later that day, Dwyane, in partnership with the Tangelo Park Program, unveiled two new basketball courts for Tangelo Park Elementary School that he refurbished with his foundation, the Wade’s World Foundation. The event was held to celebrate the students’ hard work throughout the school year and to encourage them to stay physically fit year round. On Saturday, for the fifth year in a row, Wade hosted his “All-Star Luncheon” along with chairperson, Harris Rosen (President & COO of Rosen Hotels & Resorts). The luncheon featured performances by Grammy Award-winning artist Estelle and was emceed by Lauren Rowe, co-anchor of Channel 6 News in Orlando. All funds raised by the Wade’s World Foundation from this event went to directly support the Orlando-based charity Tangelo Park Program, a community-based educational initiative to benefit children and families living in the Tangelo Park neighborhood. Billy Crystal: What To Expect On Oscar Night

In his ninth time hosting the Academy Awards, Crystal isn’t planning to ‘go after people’ like some recent awards-show emcees. By Kara Warner 2012 Oscar host Billy Crystal Photo: FilmMagic Although Billy Crystal wasn’t the Academy’s first pick to host the Oscars this year, the veteran emcee is a breath of familiar air to Hollywood’s main event. This year marks Crystal’s ninth time hosting the show, and at age 63, he will be the oldest solo host of the event since Bob Hope in 1978 (Steve Martin was 64 when he co-hosted with Alec Baldwin in 2010). Coincidentally, the “When Harry Met Sally” star received a standing ovation from the Oscar audience last year when he appeared onstage briefly to honor Hope. While some awards-show hosts of late have ventured into taboo and risky territory (see: Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais ), Crystal has always carried out his duties with class and his own special brand of charisma, charm and wit. “It’s important that the show be good, and I take it really seriously,” Crystal told Entertainment Weekly about the pressures and importance of the job. “That whole concept of ‘I want to really go after people’ — I don’t understand that. Is it a roast or is it an awards show? Do you dislike these people? I have a different bar. If there’s a good target and they deserve it, you can kid them in the right way. But it’s not the place to go out there and hammer people, because who am I? There’s many times we’ve kicked out jokes because they were too personal.” It is very clear that Crystal will not be going for the jugular, which is more than fine by us, since the Oscars have a decidedly more serious and regal tone. This year’s ceremony will be helmed by a man who respects the industry and appreciates the pomp and circumstance of it all. And while we likely won’t witness any gasp-worthy jokes or quips, we can expect to feel warm and welcome via another one of Crystal’s lively movie montages at the start of the show, along with a few lighthearted tongue-in-cheek remarks that make us all feel like we’re in on the joke and invited to the party. For Discussion: “Battle Of The Complexions” Party In St. Louis Says It Was To Honor African-American Women Pissed People Off Instead

SMH: St. Louis residents expressed outrage this week over a “Battle of the Complexions” contest scheduled for Friday night, but the event’s promoters said they organized it to honor African-American women and regretted any “misunderstanding.” The event was set for 9 p.m. local time (10 p.m. ET) at a nightclub in St. Louis. Promotional materials, including the poster pictured at right, promised a contest to see which African-American women are most attractive — those with light skin, those with brown skin or those with dark skin. “This is the most debatable topic of the year, whats the sexiest skin complexion?? So ladies come out & lets settle this!!” the promoters — Mack TV, a video and music promotional company, and a local “men’s entertainment” promoter calling himself Nelly Da’Celeb — said on a Facebook page for the event, which msnbc.com is not linking to because of extreme language. Adolphus Pruitt, president of the St. Louis chapter of the NAACP, said the event “raises the … hair on the back of people’s necks like me and some other folks.” “Folks who buy into it, support it, feed into it, they’re just assuring that using race — using the skin complexion of women, devaluating women and things of this nature — is going to continue to happen, because as long as people spend money to take advantage of it, somebody’s going to use it as a promotional tool,” Pruitt told NBC station KSDK. After the contest was highlighted this week by Kevin C. Johnson, a music writer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, negative reaction was swift and loud. Camille Houston, an African-American woman from St. Louis, told KSDK that she found the promotion offensive because it perpetuates historical divisions in the African-American community centered on skin tone. “Some guys will say, ‘I don’t like talking to dark-skinned girls,’ or, you know, some girls will say. ‘I don’t like talking to dark-skinned guys,’” Houston said. In a post Thursday on Nelly Da’Celeb’s personal Facebook page, Mack TV and Nelly Da’Celeb said they understood why some people were upset but that the event would go on: MACK TV WOULD LIKE TO CLEAR UP THE MISUNDERSTANDING OF OUR CONCEPT FOR THIS PARTY…ITS NOT TO DEGRADE WOMEN OR DIVIDE SKIN COLORS. ITS SIMPLY TO SEE WHICH COMPLEXION OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN RACE REPRESENTS THE MOST (lightskinned, caramel-brown, or darkskinned) AS A WHOLE , MALE & FEMALE! I CAN SEE THE MISUNDERSTANDING WITH OUR PROMO…..WE COULD HAVE USED A BETTER CHOICE OF WORDS….WE DID NOT MEAN TO OFFEND THE OFFENDED ITS BLACK HISTORY MONTH , SO WE MADE A PARTY THEME DEDICATED TO OUR AFRICAN AMERICAN CROWD. THE YOUNGER GENERATION IS LOVING THIS PARTY BECAUSE HERE’S THE FIRST TIME EVER YOU CAN COME OUT & BE PROUD THAT YOU ARE BLACK!! REGARDLESS OF YOUR SKIN TONE SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION & MISLEADING INFO. ITS BLACK HISTORY MONTH , SO LETS BE PROUD OF THE SKIN WE’RE IN!! REPRESENT YOUR COMPLEXION! Thoughts on this?!?!?! Source Photo: Facebook More On Bossip! Smackdown! Oscars 2012: How ‘The Help’ Got To The Academy Awards

Movie’s success proves that powerful audience support can buck Oscar stereotypes. By Kevin P. Sullivan Emma Stone in “The Help” Photo: DreamWorks Of the nine films nominated for Best Picture at this Sunday’s Academy Awards , the only two that came out before the fall movie season, where Oscar bait runs rampant, are probably the most unlikely nominees. The inclusion of “The Tree of Life” on the short list, despite its loose structure, makes sense because of the prestige of its director, Terrence Malick. “The Help,” on the other hand, found Oscar success with an untested director and a racially charged subject matter. Before “The Help” was a nominated film, it was a best-selling novel by writer Kathryn Stockett. While looking to sell the novel, Stockett queried 60 agents, all of whom rejected her request for representation. When the novel finally did find a home with an agent and eventually a publisher, it became a best-seller soon afterward. But the before the novel found a wide audience, Stockett’s childhood friend and former roommate Tate Taylor agreed with the author to pen the screen adaptation and direct the eventual film. Despite pressure from DreamWorks, Stockett insisted that Taylor direct the film of her book. The connection between Stockett and Taylor was not the only one on set. Taylor and Best Supporting Actress nominee Octavia Spencer met while working as production assistants on “A Time to Kill.” As with all high-profile novel adaptations, “The Help” had a built-in audience going into its August release, but it wasn’t until strong reviews and an A+ CinemaScore that people began to realize the potential for Oscar nominations. Two of the film’s actresses, Spencer and Best Actress nominee Viola Davis , received the earliest and most unanimous accolades after the film’s release and rode that praise to Oscar nominations. They were both favorites in their respective categories, and as we head into Oscar night, they remain so. The story of the movie’s road to the Oscars demonstrates that the power of the audience can buck old Oscar stereotypes and push a loved film to the forefront of the competition. “The Help” won audiences over and in doing so, secured a big night at the Academy Awards.
