A series of bombshell reports about Joe Simpson’s secret relationships with men have had severe effects on his estranged wife Tina’s state of mind. “She’s gone completely crazy,” a longtime friend of Tina Simpson says. Tina and Joe, the parents of Ashlee and Jessica Simpson, split this fall after 34 years of marriage. Rumors of his gay dalliances with young men soon followed. Democrat Kyrsten Sinema has been elected to represent a new Phoenix-area district, becoming the first openly bisexual person to serve in U.S. Congress. Sinema’s victory came in a year when three states approved gay marriage, and at least five openly gay Democrats were elected to U.S. House seats. Tammy Baldwin , a Wisconsin congresswoman, also became the first openly gay person elected to the U.S. Senate during last Tuesday’s election. Sinema had a narrow lead on election night that made the race too close to call, but slowly improved that advantage as more ballots were tallied in recent days. Her 6,000-vote edge officially earned her the win over Republican Vernon Parker. Parker, who took the national stage briefly in September when he gave the GOP weekly address, was criticized by Democrats as a tea party radical. Republicans countered saying Krysten Sinema, 36, was too liberal for the newly created district and doesn’t understand stay-at-home moms. Her victory ensures that Democrats will gain at least one seat in Arizona’s congressional delegation. Republicans entered the election with a 5-3 advantage. The new census added a ninth seat in the state, and he delegation is now split 4-4, with Democrat Ron Barber barely leading Republican Martha McSally. That Tucson-area district was vacated by retiring Rep. Gabrielle Giffords .

Former New York Yankees pitching prospect Brien Taylor was sentenced to 38 months in prison today after pleading guilty to distributing crack cocaine. Taylor, 40, told U.S. District Court Judge Louise W. Flanagan during his sentencing that he was sorry for causing so much pain to his family and his five daughters. ”I made poor decisions,” he said. His mother, Betty Taylor, and sisters and friends were in the courtroom for the hearing. They, along with Halerie Mahan, Taylor’s attorney, declined to comment. Flanagan said Taylor had been forthright and warned him to be mindful of his conduct as well as whom he associates with when he is released from prison. He’ll face three years of supervised release after his prison term. No financial penalty. ”There will be no fine, since you have children to support,” Flanagan said. Taylor, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1991 draft, could’ve received between 5-40 years in prison. He had been in custody since his March arrest for selling crack and powder cocaine to undercover agents with the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office over several months. In all, Taylor had distributed more than 200 grams of crack cocaine and about 100 grams of powder cocaine, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. A federal grand jury indicted Taylor in June.
