Behind-the-Scenes Video of The Hobbit with Peter Jackson: Part 1 of 100

Not only is Peter Jackson taking on the intense, arduous task of bringing another epic fantasy novel to life, but he’s still finding time to explain his technical decisions and also make ten-minute video diary entries for each step of the way. He’s just posted the first video, but given that production just started shooting, is it safe to assume we’ll see about a hundred of these before the movie finally hits?

Precious: Andy Serkis Will Act as Second Unit Director on The Hobbit

As if reprising his role of Gollum in The Hobbit wasn’t enough for Andy Serkis, the motion capturing actor will also work as second unit director during the New Zealand film shoot. “I think I understand Peter’s sensibility and we have a common history of understanding Middle Earth,” Serkis told THR . “A lot of the crew from The Lord of the Rings was returning to work on The Hobbit . There is really a sense of Peter wanting people around him who totally understand the material and the work ethic.” No truth to the rumor that Serkis will also handle the costume jewelry on the set. James Cameron Didn’t Want Guillermo del Toro to Direct The Hobbit

James Cameron is many things — director, writer, technological trailblazer, Oscar-winner, King of the World — but did you know he was also a talent consultant? Apparently! Cameron found time in his very busy schedule to offer Guillermo del Toro a bit of advice on directing The Hobbit : Don’t do it.

Will Sir Ian McKellan Still Appear in The Hobbit?

Considering The Hobbit doesn’t really have a studio or a director at this point — though Brett Ratner is still available — it does seem a bit silly that there are actually actors still attached to this thing — a fact Sir Ian McKellan surely realized. Speaking with New Zealand’s Good Morning , the acclaimed thespian — who would appear as Gandolf the Grey in the Lord of the Rings two-part prequel — pretty much threw cold water onto the heads of OneRing.net message board posters throughout Middle Earth.

Brett Ratner Researching Big Butts for The Hobbit?

You have to hand it to Brett Ratner. Though his unlikely bid to direct The Hobbit may be thwarted by either the will-I-or-won’t-I indecision of Peter Jackson or the are-we-solvent-or-aren’t-we troubles of MGM, Ratner still spent last night doing the appropriate, NSFW literary research (at least, we think so):

Peter Jackson in Negotiations to Direct The Hobbit

It looks like the MGM and Warner Bros. strategy of contacting tonally inappropriate directors to helm The Hobbit franchise had paid off better than any strategy associated with MGM in the last year. According to Movieline sister site Deadline, Peter Jackson is fully immersed in negotiations that would place him behind the camera for the two Hobbit films. Feign your total surprise… now.

The Hobbit Now Has Built Sets, But Still No Director

How important is it for The Hobbit to have a director? Apparently, not very! Despite the fact that Guillermo del Toro fled the director’s chair and Peter Jackson doesn’t want the gig, the film has still been auditioning actors in Los Angeles like nothing’s the matter. Now, new pictures have leaked of The Hobbit’s sets, which have already been built in New Zealand.

5 Subpar Directors Who Will Provoke Peter Jackson Into Making The Hobbit Himself

These days, it seems like everyone wants to direct The Hobbit except for Peter Jackson. After Guillermo del Toro left the project, it appeared that Jackson would be a natural fit to take the reins back to his Lord of the Rings franchise, but his reported reluctance has opened the door for unlikely contenders like David Dobkin ( Wedding Crashers ) and Brett Ratner ( X-Men: The Last Stand ). We’re on to this game that the suits from MGM and WB seem to be playing: flirt with completely inappropriate directors who aren’t right for the franchise in the hopes that they’ll bait Jackson into directing the film himself! Here are five more candidates for the job who ought to be leaked to the press immediately:

David Yates Rumored to Direct Hobbit

When Guillermo del Toro left The Hobbit , Hollywood wondered if there was any director who could step in and guide such a massive, effects-laden series while remaining in the stylistic shadow of the auteurs who’d come before. Duh, of course: David Yates, who fulfilled that exact function on the last few installments of the Harry Potter series! Slashfilm notes that his involvement with The Hobbit is just a rumor, but that sound you hear is eight thousand bloggers slapping themselves on the forehead, wondering how they didn’t think of this first.
