At least it wasn’t over fried chicken , riiiiight? A riot broke out at a Florida juvenile detention center this weekend over ramen noodles of all things! Via NY Daily News reports : What started as a simple game of basketball ended up in a full blown riot when juveniles took over a correctional facility in Florida because of a reneged bet over instant noodles. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, when 150 law enforcement officers — many in full riot gear — had to be called into regain control at the Avon Park Youth Academy. A group of boys from St. Petersburg and Orlando were playing basketball. The prize for the winning team was three cup noodle soups. But when the St. Petersburg team lost, it refused to hand over the noodles, and a fight broke out. Chaos the ensued at the correction facility, which is maintained by the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice but run by private corrections company G4S, as others got involved. According to ABC Action News, Sheriff Grady Judd said, “This was a full blown riot. I watched them throw objects at us and other deputies.” Staff members alerted police, who descended on the facility, which houses 138 boys. The youths managed to gain access to an office building holding their records and set it on fire. A dumpster was also set afire. Polk County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Carrie Eleazer said that at least 18 of 20 buildings at the compound were heavily damaged, sustaining “hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of damage.” Seven juveniles were injured during the riot, which wasn’t contained until 12 a.m. the next day, with one sustaining a broken leg. No one escaped. Sixty-four were then transported to the PCSO South County Jail in Frostproof, where they were placed in state custody, away from adult inmates, under the supervision of G4S. The rest remain at the academy. The sheriff’s office is now investigating the riot, which could result in multiple felony charges. Eleazer said the riot was not captured on camera because the facility doesn’t have security cameras. Seriously tho? Top Ramen dawg? Y’all going to the hole for Oodles of Noodles?
