Emma Stone And Bryce Dallas Howard Bond Over ‘Spider-Man’ Role

New Gwen Stacy says ‘it was pretty great to be together’ on ‘The Help’ set when she learned the casting news. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Emma Stone Photo: MTV News WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — In a weird twist of fate, Emma Stone found out she’d be playing Gwen Stacy in the latest installment of “Spider-Man” while on the set of “The Help” co-starring the previous franchise’s Gwen, Bryce Dallas Howard. “I found out while I was on set of ‘The Help,’ ” she said about the Andrew Garfield-starring “Amazing Spider-Man” during “The Help” Q&A session for MTV’s Sneak Peek Week. “It was pretty great to be together for that.” Howard said she was almost as excited about the casting as Stone was. “Representing as redheads!” she proclaimed onstage in front of an excited crowd at the Pacific Design Center. “I’m one of those people that goes online and reads gossip about movies, so pretty early on, there was some buzz,” she said, adding that she stormed into Stone’s trailer the minute she heard the news. “I was stoked.” With so much buzz about the new “Spider-Man” film, it seems that Stone will be just as surprised as fans to see the flick. “I’ve seen nothing, I promise. I’ve seen small action sequences for the 3-D, and it looked terrible,” she joked. “I really haven’t seen [anything].” So what did Stone do to research the role of Gwen — besides leaning on Howard for her first-hand account, of course. “I read a pretty comprehensive ‘Death of the Stacys’ book … and it’s a really amazing book to learn the story of Captain Stacy and Gwen Stacy,” she said. “And I’ve read a various amount of comics.” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? ‘The Help’ Stars Talk Tearjerkers At MTV’s Sneak Peek Week

Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard open up about book-turned-movie during Q&A session. By Jocelyn Vena Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard Photo: MTV News WEST HOLLYWOOD, California — Emma Stone and Bryce Dallas Howard spoke to a packed room at the Pacific Design Center on Thursday night (June 2) for the latest installment in MTV’s Sneak Peek Week, opening up about retro tearjerker “The Help,” which screened to an excited crowd shortly before the chat. Since the book-turned-film is certain emotional, we asked its leading ladies if they ever reach for the tissues in the movie theater. “Oh, I cry!” Emma Stone admitted. “It’s shocking I’m not crying right now. I cried at ‘Air Bud.’ I cried at ‘Spice World.’ ” But what about when she watches her own movies? “That’s crying out of terror and self-loathing,” she joked. All joking aside, Stone is really proud of “The Help” and “felt it reflected the book.” “When you read the book, you have a vision of those characters too,” she said. “I definitely understand being protective of the material.” “The Help” is the film adaptation of the best-selling novel set in the South during the civil-rights movement. It stars Stone, Howard and Viola Davis and focuses on the bonds formed in the face of adversity. Stone is the flick’s protagonist, Skeeter, who works to make a change through writing a book about the hardships felt by minorities in the South during this pivotal time in history. “She’s a bit of a modern woman,” Stone said of her character. “When I was younger, I thought I wanted to be a writer. She’s curious about people and she’s questioning her life.” Howard, meanwhile, plays the bigoted Hilly, and the actress said she latched onto something very specific about the character to make her relatable. “The thing I eventually grabbed onto was her ignorance,” Howard explained. “Once I understood, I then could attempt to play that character.” Stone used her costumes to help her get into character. “The accent is always a major concern, and then, of course, knowing how to be Southern, there’s a lot of challenges,” Stone said. “This is the first time I felt more in character after putting on the wardrobe. It was wonderful to have that.” Stick with MTV News all week as we gear up for Sunday’s Movie Awards with a Sneak Peek Week screening and live-stream Q&A session every night this week. Jason Bateman Warns Jason Sudeikis ‘Don’t Be Hungover’ At Movie Awards

‘Horrible Bosses’ co-star tells host Sudeikis to ‘Be all you’ on Sunday. By Ryan J. Downey, with reporting by Eric Ditzian Jason Sudeikis Photo: Frank Micelotta/ PictureGroup Jason Sudeikis is obviously no stranger to the pressures of live TV. On Sunday, he’ll join a long list of “Saturday Night Live” stars who’ve hosted the MTV Movie Awards that includes Andy Samberg, Jimmy Fallon, Eddie Murphy, Mike Meyers and Dennis Miller. Nevertheless, Sudeikis told us he’ll be psyching himself up in the mirror in the moments before the show. Standing backstage with his “Horrible Bosses” co-star Jason Bateman shortly after an MTV News screening and Q&A of their comedy at the Pacific Design Center on Wednesday night, Sudeikis even offered to demonstrate some of the things he’ll be telling himself before the big show. “Remember to keep your eyes open, Jason! Nobody likes a mumbler. And, uh, ‘Got your nose!’ It’s like my catchphrase to myself. ‘Got your nose!’ ” “With a little wink?” Bateman asked. “He’s adorable!” All kidding aside, Bateman was confident that his buddy won’t need any extra coaching. “He doesn’t need any advice. This guy’s been good on his feet for years and years, that’s why he has the best job in show-business on ‘SNL.’ You people at MTV are very lucky to have him.” “We’ve kept a tight group,” Sudeikis said of his preparation process. “I’ve been very fortunate to have a lot of my friends and co-workers from ‘SNL’ helping out and they had a great group out here [in Los Angeles]. Mark Burnett, [the event producer], has been my boss in regards to this, and I’ve spoken with him twice and he’s been nice. No ‘horrible bosses’ at this point.” “Just don’t be hungover,” Bateman said, turning his eyes to Sudeikis. “Be all you. Just make sure you’re there and well rested, angel,” he added. Then he went in for a kiss ( you have to watch the video ). So what can we expect from the show? “I bet people will be screaming after certain movies are named,” Sudeikis offered. “I bet it will run exactly on time and I bet that … It’s very difficult [to predict]. Well, probably, I bet someone dies.” Bateman smiled. “That’s great! Tune in for some good death, Sunday night, MTV!” Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards ? This DigitalGlobe handout image shows the earthquake and tsunami damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant located in the town of Okuma in the Futaba District of Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. California is closely watching the crisis at a Japanese nuclear plant, but officials downplayed the threat that a radioactive cloud blown across the Pacific could pose for the US West Coast. Katy Perry Offers Merchandise Funds For Japan Earthquake Victims

Joe and Nick Jonas also send their well-wishes to the people of Japan. By Gil Kaufman Two women are surrounded by debris in Japan on Monday Photo: Michael Lavine Katy Perry has been very vocal over the past few days in urging her fans to donate to the Red Cross to help the victims of Friday’s devastating 9.0 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. On Tuesday (March 15), while in Germany for a tour date, Perry requested that fans buy merch at her show to benefit relief efforts. “If u go by the merchandise stand, purchase a KP light-up wand. All proceeds will go 2 to #Japanredcross,” she tweeted. “And when I play … Firework, let’s ignite the light for them tonight. I will be doing this for future shows so be ready!!!” The Jonas Brothers’ Joe Jonas recorded a special message for victims of the disaster on Monday and also encouraged the band’s fans to contribute to the Red Cross to help those affected by the 9.0 tremor, which has caused widespread property destruction, left thousands dead and unleashed a potential nuclear crisis thanks to the damage at a pair of power plants. “Hi everybody, it’s Joe here. I’m just sending a little video message to the victims in Japan that have been hit by this horrible tragedy,” said Jonas, who was sporting a few days’ beard growth and looking visibly pained by the situation. “My thoughts and prayers are with you guys. The ones who’ve lost loved ones, I’m so sorry and I’m praying every day for you guys.” Brother Nick Jonas posted a message as well, saying, “our thoughts are with people in Japan, our prayers are with you as well during this tough time. God bless and we’re all praying for you.” The Brothers’ “Camp Rock” co-star Meaghan Martin recorded a similar video . “I just wanted to send my love and thoughts and prayers to those in Japan affected by the earthquake and the tsunamis in the Pacific,” she said. “And everybody all over the world with friends and family members traveling in those locations. My thoughts and prayers are with you and together we can get through this.” “Twilight Saga” star Ashley Greene spoke to Examiner.com about the delays to “Breaking Dawn” filming that took place on Friday when the movie’s cast was evacuated from their Vancouver set due to tsunami warnings brought on by the quake. “Everything kind of got turned upside down and inside out,” she said of the interruption of the film’s schedule. “We got the least of the brunt of things. We have to be thankful for that. But really, it’s more about that we had to pick up and move to a different location and switch scenes around, but we are certainly moving forward and carrying on. It’s not really going to affect the film too harshly.” Greene urged people to send their prayers and donations to the people affected by the tragedy. “I think it’s something unpredictable and horrible and unexpected and really unfortunate and heartbreaking,” she said. “I certainly send out my prayers and my thoughts to the people and to their loved ones and lost ones. And hopefully, we as Americans are going to do everything we can to help them rebuild.” Also pledging to help in recent days is 1980s boy band Boyz II Men, who are raising money for the victims of the tragedy through the Red Cross. “Boyz II Men have a very special relationship with the people of Japan,” the group wrote in a statement about their goal of raising $100,000 for the relief agency . “We have been going to Japan for the past 20 years and we are deeply concerned for the people of Japan and especially for our friends and fans who reside in Sendai and all the areas affected by this earthquake and tsunami … We can proudly say that Sendai is a beautiful city and we have performed there many times. In fact, we are planning to perform in Sendai in November of 2011 as part of our 20th Year Anniversary Tour.” So far, their efforts have resulted in more than $15,000 in pledges from fans, who’ve contributed amounts ranging from $10 to $1,500. Verizon Wireless announced on Monday that it will offer its customers free calls to Japan from now through April 10. The deal covers most calls to Japan and includes free text messaging and multimedia messaging to Japan for its post-paid customers. Calls made from Japan on a Verizon residential landline will also be free. From P. Diddy to Conan O’Brien, Chris Brown, former “Star Trek” actor George Takei, Lady Gaga, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda and actor Charlie Sheen, numerous stars have stepped up to help raise funds. On Monday, Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus offered a number of rare band items for sale in an eBay auction that will also benefit the Red Cross. Katy Perry, P. Diddy Among Celebrities To Unite In Support of Red Cross As Japan Reels

Developing nuclear crisis, eruptions, mass evacuations and deaths among new devastations in wake of historic earthquake. By Shawn Adler Katy Perry Photo: John Parra/ WireImage After taking to Twitter en masse to offer personal , idiosyncratic tributes and prayers for the people and nation of Japan in the moments after a deadly 9.0 earthquake rocked the industrial giant on Friday (March 11), celebrities are today using the popular social media venue to rally behind a single, unifying message: donate. “Remember as you go about your day please #prayforjapan & if you are able, text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to Japan’s emergency relief,” rocker Katy Perry tweeted early Sunday morning (March 13). “EVERYONE KEEP TEXTING!! The quake & tsunami victims in Japan NEED US!!!” P. Diddy extolled multiple times on his verified account. The message was echoed throughout the morning and afternoon by stars ranging from Conan O’Brien , to Chris Brown and George Takei , each asking their followers to donate to the humanitarian organization, which has three times won the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to help with relief efforts. The Red Cross and other relief organizations will face a unique challenge in the aftermath of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, which in addition to a massive loss of life now estimated at upwards of 14,000 people, has caused a developing nuclear crisis in the Pacific island chain, with partial meltdowns and explosions occurring at several of Japan’s nuclear reactors, according to The New York Times . Facing explosions due to the build-up of hydrogen, technicians, racing to cool overheating reactors, have taken to flooding them with sea water, according to a report on CNN . Less resolvable, but perhaps equally devastating, was news Sunday afternoon that the Shinmoedake volcano on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu resumed activity and erupted, spewing ash and lava into the air and breaking windows up to miles away. It is not known if the eruption is linked to the earthquake. As large swaths of territory remain all but unreachable due to water, Japan has planned to dispatch more than 100,000 of its defense forces to aid in recovery. But with roughly 1,300 people already confirmed dead, several thousand more reported missing, several hundred thousand more evacuated from their homes, and several million more without access to power, food or water, Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan took to the airwaves Sunday, calling the earthquake the “toughest and the most difficult crisis for Japan” since the end of World War II. “We Japanese had a lot of difficulties in the past, but we were able to overcome those difficulties to reach this peaceful and prosperous society we have been able to build,” he said, as reported by CNN. “I ask each one of you, please have such determination, and deepen your bond with your family members, your neighbors and the people in your community to overcome this crisis so that Japan can be a better place. We can do it together.” The destruction may not be over. The earthquake, the largest in recorded Japanese history, is expected to cause several devastating aftershocks, the largest of which could reach 7.0 on the Richter Scale.
