Why Sex Isn’t Selling As Much These Days

Does sex still sell? I’m pretty young, but when I think back to the ‘90s, pretty much a huge chunk of my childhood, sex in music and film (but maybe not in literature) was pretty vague, as I’m sure it was for most people growing up before the new millennium. We weren’t hidden like we were living in the ‘50s, but as a child there was still the possibility that you would stay in the dark about what songs “really” meant. Not until you were a teenager did you have that epiphany, during which your ears would finally hear what was “really” being said to you, and only then did it connect to your brain. But nowadays, everything is explicit. It’s such a risk to ride in a car with your elders listening to the radio because a commercial about condoms comes on and makes things awkward. And if that doesn’t, there’s always that song about making love faces and taking your panties off, breaking ‘ol girl’s back, and forcing things to fit and on and on. The lack of decorum has desensitized us. Continued at MadameNoire.com

Climate Refresher: Runaway Global Warming (Video)

It’s good to brush up on the basics once in a while — especially when political and ideological arguments have consumed the public narrative on climate change. HIV-positive Women in Chile forcibly Sterilized & Abused

Hours after Francisca gave birth to her first child, a midwife came into the recovery room and bluntly informed her that she would never have children again. She had been sterilized, unknowingly, during her cesarean delivery. Francisca was HIV-positive and only 21.She woke up with a healthy, HIV-negative baby boy, and sterile. She was diagnosed with HIV during routine exams early into her pregnancy in 2002. Throughout her pregnancy no one in the local hospital counseled her on what it meant to be HIV-positive, the potential risks of transmission to her baby or the possibility of sterilization, claims Francisca, which is not her real name because of stigma assocaited with HIV. “As I was about to give birth, the nurse scolded me, telling me I was irresponsible for having gotten pregnant with HIV, and asking why I hadn’t aborted. It was horrible,” she said. “Today women with HIV can decide if they want a normal delivery or a cesarean, depending on their condition. But many women, especially in rural areas, don’t know that. Doctors tell them their babies will be HIV-positive if they don’t undergo a cesarean, and they won’t do the cesarean if the women don’t agree to sterilization. That’s how they scare women,” said Sara Araya, head of the women's department at Vivo Positivo. Cases documented in 'Dignity Denied' reveal that some doctors and nurses were shockingly misinformed about even the methods of HIV transmission, inaccurately advising mothers to use separate eating utensils and bathrooms, misguidedly directing them not to touch their babies – or refusing to touch the women themselves – and, as in Francisca's case, coercing or forcing them to get sterilised. Government health officials did not respond to repeated requests for interviews. Coercive and forced sterilizations against HIV-positive women have also been reported in Mexico, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, South Africa and Namibia. http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/chile/101028/forced-sterilization-hiv-aids http://reproductiverights.org/en/feature/dignity-denied-violations-of-the-rights… added by: rebelution07

Demi Lovato And Backup Dancer Close To A Deal, Lawyer Says

‘I’m fairly confident we will be able to resolve these issues,’ Alex Welch’s lawyer tells E! News. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato and Alex Welch Photo: Getty Images After Alex Welch spoke out about her alleged altercation with Demi Lovato — noting that she had yet to receive an apology from the actress, who is seeking treatment for personal issues — comes news that both camps are close to a settlement to keep Welch from suing the Disney star. The dancer’s lawyer, Don Karpel, told E! News , “I have engaged in discussions with Demi Lovato’s attorney. I’m fairly confident we will be able to resolve these issues.” A rep for the actress confirmed the report as well, noting that “they did speak” about the matter. The rep added: “Demi’s attorneys have had an initial discussion with Mr. Karpel. They are exploring the possibility of an amicable resolution of this matter. We do not plan on making further public comments during this process.” Karpel claims that Welch suffered emotional and physical repercussions after Lovato allegedly punched her as well as “lasting physical damage,” which caused the dancer to consult with a plastic surgeon. E! reports that both camps began discussions Tuesday (December 7) after Welch, who was a dancer on the singer/actress’ tour with the Jonas Brothers, gave an interview implying that she would seek legal damages against the singer. Lovato’s camp reached out to Karpel after he shared that he would file a motion “in the next seven to 10 days” for alleged assault and battery. While it appears that the two are working to settle the situation, in an interview Monday, Welch explained she just wanted the “Sonny With a Chance” star to say she was sorry for the incident. “To this day, I haven’t gotten an apology. I’ve heard nothing,” Welch explained. “That’s sad if you think that person is your friend.” Related Artists Demi Lovato

Could space farmers grow crops on other planets?

Some scientists question whether soil is necessary for space agriculture Science fiction lovers aren't the only ones captivated by the possibility of colonizing another planet. Scientists are engaging in numerous research projects that focus on determining how habitable other planets are for life. Mars, for example, is revealing more and more evidence that it probably once had liquid water on its surface, and could one day become a home away from home for humans. “The spur of colonizing new lands is intrinsic in man,” said Giacomo Certini, a researcher at the Department of Plant, Soil and Environmental Science at the University of Florence, Italy. “Hence expanding our horizon to other worlds must not be judged strange at all. Moving people and producing food there could be necessary in the future.” Humans traveling to Mars, to visit or to colonize, will likely have to make use of resources on the planet rather than take everything they need with them on a spaceship. This means farming their own food on another planet that has a very different ecosystem than Earth's. Certini and his colleague Riccardo Scalenghe from the University of Palermo, Italy, recently published a study in Planetary and Space Science that makes some encouraging claims. They say the surfaces of Venus, Mars and the moon appear suitable for agriculture. more, at LINK- – – http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40418493/ns/technology_and_science-space/ graphic- http://www.dunecraft.com/img/products/gift%20ideas/space-plant1.gif added by: remanns

Chelsea’s Law Becomes Official on Thursday

September 8th, 2010 10:00 PM ET Gov. Schwarzenegger to sign 'Chelsea's Law' on Thursday The parents of a California teen who was raped and murdered by a sex offender this year will join Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday as he signs into law a bill that increases penalties for certain sex offenses. Named after 17-year-old Chelsea King, “Chelsea's Law” increases penalties for forcible sex acts against minors and mandates lifetime parole for certain sex offenders. Schwarzenegger will be joined by the teen's parents, Brent and Kelly King, and the bill's sponsor, Assemblymember Nathan Fletcher, as he signs it into law at Balboa Park in San Diego, California at 9:45 a.m. PT. The event will be webcast live at www.gov.ca.gov . “Chelsea's Law” has an urgency clause attached to it that means it will take effect as soon as it is signed. Read more about “Chelsea's Law” on CNN.com The bill creates a penalty of life without the possibility of parole for forcible sex crimes against minors that include aggravating factors, such as the victim's age or whether the victim was bound or drugged. “Chelsea's Law” also sets criteria for assessing the risk of recidivism and, based on that risk, placing certain paroled sex offenders under greater supervision. Registered sex offender John Gardner III has admitted to killing King and 14-year-old Amber Dubois. He was sentenced in April to three consecutive terms of life without parole for the murders and an attack on a jogger in a plea deal that spared him the death penalty. Dubois' father is behind three assembly bills concerning law enforcement response to missing children. They are also awaiting Schwarzenegger's signature. added by: EthicalVegan

NBC Chief Jeff Zucker Open to Political Run, Bringing Couric Back to Network

We’ve heard the knocks on NBC and the institutional bias that exists in its network – from the subtle spin in its flagship network’s news coverage at NBC to the over-the-top bias at its cable news channel MSNBC. So maybe the man behind the curtains at NBC Universal would like to be more overt with his opinions – as a politician? On MSNBC’s Aug. 25 “Morning Joe,” Jeff Zucker, president and CEO of NBC Universal, addressed both his possible political aspirations and bringing back one of the network’s former star personalities. Host Joe Scarborough asked Zucker where his political interests were at this stage. “You know Joe – look, politics is something I’ve always had an interest in,” Zucker said. “It is something I’ve always thought about. It is not something that is on my current radar. It’s not something I’m thinking about in the next few years, but it is something that I would always consider. I think – I love politics. I would love to give back. I would love to serve. I would love to do something, but it is not imminent. It’s nothing now.”  That set Zucker up for a question from Scarborough – if he was holding out to bring Couric back to the peacock network where she was a fixture at NBC’s “Today” from 1991 until 2006. “You are going to wait until you get Katie Couric back at NBC then you’re going to get into politics?” Scarborough asked.  It’s been no secret the Katie Couric project at the “CBS Evening News” has not produced the results that were anticipated. Couric’s broadcast just tied its all-time low in total viewers with an average of 4.89 million tuning in during the five days. Zucker dodged Scarborough’s inquiry, but Scarborough continued to press him on the topic.  ZUCKER: I think those are two separate issues there. SCARBOROUGH: Is Katie coming back to NBC? ZUCKER: Well I think she is fully ensconced in a job today and she’s happy where she is. SCARBOROUGH: No, she’s not. Come on. You’re talking like a politician. She hates it over there. ZUCKER: Oh, I don’t know that’s the case. SCARBOROUGH: No, it’s the case. MIKA BRZEZINSKI: That’s not politically correct. SCARBOROUGH: Since she doesn’t like it where she is — ZUCKER: I thought we were talking politics here for a second. BRZEZINSKI: I was going to ask you about the mosque. SCARBOROUGH: This is your first press conference here buddy. So since she doesn’t like where she is, since you have a great relationship with Katie, would you like Katie Couric back at NBC? Zucker relented, saying he would be open to the possibility of Couric returning to NBC in some capacity. “I always said that, look Katie would be a great addition wherever she is,” Zucker said. “If the time were right, I think that’s something we would look at. But she’s under contract now, and I think she’s happy where she is, whether you believe it or not, so I’m not going to wade into that controversy.”

Immigration: Richardson Sees McCain Going Squishy If Re-Elected

Seriously: is Bill Richardson trying to wreck John McCain?   Ask yourself: what would be the one thing most likely to undermine McCain with Arizona Republican Senate primary voters? Surely it would be the possibility that if re-elected, born-again immigration hawk McCain would revert to the squishiness that led him to collaborate with Ted Kennedy on a “path to citizenship” for illegals. Yet on this evening’s Ed Show, that’s exactly what the New Mexico governor—twice—imagined McCain might do.   Schultz set the stage, describing McCain’s recent adoption of a hard line on immigration as “the biggest flip-flop of the year.” Then came Richardson, imagining a McCain re-reversal . . . BILL RICHARDSON: My view is that he is in a tough re-election, in a primary against J.D. Hayworth, and this is such a hot issue in Arizona. My hope Ed is a fter he gets re-elected that he will come back to his old position, which was as you said the Kennedy-McCain bill which has increased border enforcement but also has a path to legalization, a guest-worker program, cracking down on illegal hires, but most importantly a path to legalization. And later . . . RICHARDSON: If you’re going to get into immigration reform, you got to have some Republicans , and right now it doesn’t seem we have any.  Maybe Lindsey Graham. Maybe John McCain after he gets re-elected. So what was Richardson up to? Offering honest analysis, or slipping the shiv into McCain by suggesting his new-found harder line on immigration is a farce?
