WaPo’s Richard Cohen: ‘Palin Couldn’t Be President of Black America or Hispanic America’

If you thought the media attacks on Sarah Palin and her family were deplorable in 2008, it's clear with the 2012 presidential campaign starting and her name being bandied about, you ain't seen nuttin' yet. Take the Washington Post's Richard Cohen for example who penned a column Tuesday concluding, ” She could not be the president of black America nor of Hispanic America “: read more

Obama Aims $50 Billion Stimulus at Nation’s Transit

Image via California High-Speed Rail Authority In his Labor Day speech two days ago, the president announced plans for a $50 billion stimulus package that would take aim at updating the country’s lagging transportation infrastructure. He called for Congress to approve an infusion of funds for highway, air traffic control, and, yes, high speed rail projects, that would lead to the “immediate” creation of jobs and give a boost to the economy. Obama said that the bill would be paid for by eli… Read the full story on TreeHugger

WaPo Tries to Bury Their Own Depressing Poll Numbers for Dems Off the Front Page

The Washington Post doesn’t avoid the bad news for Democrats on Tuesday’s front page, but it noticeably tried to hide the worst of it. The headline on the new ABC/Post poll was “Republicans making gains ahead of midterm elections; parties nearly even on trust; Obama’s overall rating is at new low, poll finds.” There is no graphic illustration of any poll result — unlike their misleading GOP-maligning July 13 story . The Post did announce that inside their polls merely “shows Republicans with the edge as independents slide away from the Democrats.” But the story by Dan Balz and Jon Cohen saved all the most depressing numbers for inside the paper on A5: — Republicans lead Democrats 47 to 45 percent on the basic ballot question, but “among those most likely to vote this fall, the Republican advantage swells to 53 percent to the Democrats’ 40 percent .” — “Voters were also asked whether they think it is more important to have Democrats in charge of Congress to help support the president’s policies or to have Republicans in control to serve as a check on Obama’s agenda. Here, 55 percent say they prefer Republicans, while 39 percent choose Democrats . The GOP’s 16-point edge is double what it was in July.” — “Obama’s overall job rating is at a new low in Post-ABC polling, with just 46 percent of all Americans giving him positive marks and 52 percent negative ones . On two big issues, disapproval of the president’s performance has reached new highs: Fifty-seven percent now disapprove of his handling of the economy and 58 percent give him low marks on dealing with the deficit.” — ” Forty-five percent now consider the president’s views on most issues ‘too liberal,’ another new high. In previous polls dating to early 2008, consistent majorities said they found Obama’s positions ‘just about right’ ideologically.” Karen Tumulty’s story on the left side of the top of the front page didn’t hide the pessimism. Before looking at the state of play in Wisconsin, it began: “Democrats in Congress are no longer asking themselves whether this is going to be a bad election year for them and their party. They are asking whether it is going to be a disaster.” The Inside box in between the front page stories did suggest “President Obama announces $50 billion in new road, rail, and runway improvements. A2” At least the story itself (by Peter Slevin) noted this is a “proposal,” not an announcement, as if the president just spends public money without Congressional approval. The inside box didn’t note Obama’s strange notion that Republicans “talk about me like a dog,” or that he bizarrely claimed “If I said the sky is blue, they’d say no. If I said fish live in the sea, they’d say no.” They were in the A2 story.

Ariz. Sheriff to Obama: Give Me Half Hour, I’ll Show You How to Secure Border

Sheriff Paul Babeu of Pinal County, Ariz., is issuing an invitation to President Barack Obama: If the president will come and spend a half hour with Babeu in Arizona, the sheriff says, he will convince the president he can succeed in securing the border and thus make himself into a hero who transcends partisan politics.   Babeu’s southern Arizona county, while not contiguous with the border, has been designated by the Justice Department as part of a High Intensity Drug Trafficking region that is a major route for drug and alien smugglers bringing narcotics and illegal aliens into the United States from Mexico. Babeu has joined with Sheriff Larry Dever of neighboring Cochise County, Ariz.-which does sit on the border-as well as with Arizona’s two senators, John McCain and Jon Kyl, in endorsing a ten-point plan for securing the border.     Noting that President Obama has visited Afghanistan to assess the security situation there, CNSNews.com asked Babeu in a videotaped interview whether he would like the president visit with him in Arizona so he can have the opportunity to persuade the president that his plan to secure the border will work. “If the president gave me a half hour, I am confident that I could convince him and to show him the way that he can personally secure the border, and he would be the hero of everybody that truly transcends bipartisan politics and secures that border,” said Babeu. “I believe that if a leader truly wanted to do that we have the means and the resources necessary to secure our border and to protect America once and for all, and then we can get to the point in the future, only after the border is secure, that there is some type of discussion about what do we do with the approximate 13 million people who are here illegally.”     The  ten-point border security plan  backed by Sheriffs Babeu and Dever and Senators McCain and Kyl includes provisions to complete 700 miles of double- and triple-layered border fending, significantly increase the number of drone surveillance aircraft patrolling the border, and deploy 3,000 National Guardsmen to the Arizona section of the Mexico border alone until the governor of Arizona in consultation with local law enforcement officials certifies that the border is secure. Glenn Beck Compares Obama’s America To ‘Planet Of The Apes’

Glenn Beck compared Obama's America to “the damn Planet of the Apes,” Thursday during a rant against the president's praise for the AFL-CIO. Beck made the comparison while trying to blame union support of strong pensions for the nation's high unemployment rate. He doesn't like that former SEIU president Andy Stern sits on the president's panel on deficit reduction. The segment's accompanying online article omits the Fox News host's Planet of the Apes comparison. added by: TimALoftis

George Stephanopoulos’s Wife On CNN: ‘Is Monogamy Killing Your Marriage?’

“Tonight – is monogamy killing marriage? If you let your spouse stray, will they stay? Rethinking wedded bliss in the 21st century.” Believe it or not, that’s how “Larry King Live” began on CNN Tuesday. Filling in for King was Ali Wentworth, comedienne, actress, and wife of ABC’s George Stephanopoulos who in February did a striptease on the set of “Good Morning America” for her husband’s 49th birthday. The topic of discussion Tuesday: “Should couples have open relationships and disclose affairs? Could letting your man sleep with another woman actually help your relationship?” In case you were wondering, the following aired at 9PM EDT (video follows with transcript and commentary): ALI WENTWORTH, GUEST HOST: Tonight – is monogamy killing marriage? If you let your spouse stray, will they stay? Rethinking wedded bliss in the 21st century. Then sharks in the water. One attacks and shreds the arm of a swimmer in Florida. Great whites are spotted off the coast of Cape Cod. They’re lurking, look out. Next, on LARRY KING LIVE. Good evening, I’m Ali Wentworth sitting in for Larry. He’s on vacation. I’m very excited about this show tonight because it’s two of my biggest fears. A great white shark attacking me or my husband cheating. Now if you’ve ever been in a relationship you’ll want to stay right here because we are talking about monogamy. It’s been a hot topic on CNN.com all day. Should couples have open relationships and disclose affairs? Could letting your man sleep with another woman actually help your relationship? Well, that’s what we’re going to ask our guests tonight. Bethenny Frankel is here. She’s a star of Bravo’s “Bethenny Getting Married.” She tied the knot in March. Congratulations. BETHENNY FRANKEL, ACTRESS, BRAVO’S “BETHENNY GETTING MARRIED”: Thank you. WENTWORTH: Holly Hill is the author of “Sugarbabe.” She says women should negotiate infidelity with their husbands. And Sarah Symonds is an author and infidelity analyst. Hello, women, and welcome to a hot topic. Infidelity. I want to — I want to first ask, have any of you been cheated on? FRANKEL: Yes. I was cheated on. His — he had a girlfriend while he was — well, he was actually sleeping with her. I was his girlfriend. And she called me in the middle of the night at about 2:00 in the morning and said, can I speak to Michael? I guess he’s going to be listening. Hi, Michael. Hi, can I speak to Michael, and I said, who is this? And she said, I’m his girlfriend. And we hung up the phone and I waited two hours and I star 69’d her so I can call her back and get all the details. WENTWORTH: And she gave you all the details? FRANKEL: And she gave me the details. You need the details. WENTWORTH: Well, you always need the details. Now, Holly — Holly Hill author of “Sugarbabe,” you actually think that’s OK. You think that if you negotiate fidelity with your spouse or lover that actually makes for a long and successful relationship. Am I right? HOLLY HILL, SAYS WOMEN SHOULD LET MEN CHEAT: Yes. Absolutely. And those details that we talk about, if you’re meeting the women that your partner is being with, you’re not building her up to be some kind of supermodel in your head. And we always want to know the details. And the best way to get the details is ask her out for coffee and be adult about what is a very educated and natural thing to be doing. FRANKEL: See, I think that was a low point in my relationship, in my life to be talking to that girl. It really had nothing to do with her. I was in the wrong relationship because I was with someone who was cheating. And I think that negotiating within your relationship about being allowed to cheat is absurd. WENTWORTH: You know, Holly, it’s one of the things that I — I’m married. And one of the things that I think of in my marriage is that, you know, I can go to my girlfriends for emotional support or my shrink, and there are other venues where I can sort of get what I want. But I feel that marriage, the one thing I have with my husband, which is sacred, is a sexual physical relationship. Otherwise, why be married? HILL: I guess the only reason it’s sacred is because it’s — there’s old-fashioned rules that we’re obeying. And if you want to have a lifetime relationship with someone — which is what we all want — it’s about negotiating things within their nature and their biology. WENTWORTH: Now, Sarah, you say that — you started a fantastic Web site, MistressesAnonymous. But you’re not saying that that’s a good thing. This is really a support group for a lot of women that have been brokenhearted because they had an affair with a married man or wanted to be with a married man. Am I right? SARAH SYMONDS, AUTHOR & INFIDELITY ANALYST: Absolutely. And first of all, hi, Ali, thanks for having me on. Hi, ladies. I can absolutely resonate with Holly, I’ve been through certain, you know, similar experiences that she has. But I have to say, if you are negotiating with somebody you probably are in the wrong relationship. Anything that needs that much negotiation probably isn’t right and you should get out of it. And that’s who my Web site is about, that’s what my support group is about. It’s called MistressesAnonymous, which is like Alcoholics Anonymous. But in my group we can drink, and trust me, you need to. It’s, you know, a 12-step program. And literally I help women get out of their toxic affairs with married men, with unavailable men, with bad boys. It’s a phenomenon that’s going over America. You know women are attracting to these wrong guys. And I hear from women every single day. It’s unbelievable. WENTWORTH: Now I want to sort of open this debate up to all three of you, which is that a lot of people say, men and women clearly are different, and we have different needs and men really biologically, physically, their urge is to spread their seed throughout the land, and ours is to kind of, you know, incubate. And when you put that in its very kind of specific scientific DNA kind of way, do we allow men because it is their physical urge to go out and have at it? FRANKEL: I think women — first of all, men are sleeping with the women. And I mean, speaking of the sharks that are going to be on the show tonight, there are a lot of women going out and preying on men. So I think it’s equal. I think a lot of women have a big sexual appetite. So, beyond the television shows, movies, music, trash novels, and magazines encouraging infidelity, a cable news network not only feels this is an appropriate subject, but also at 9PM. With all this publicizing of extra-marital relationships, how do couples manage to stay together AND raise children that honor commitment and vows? Seems to be more and more impossible, doesn’t it?  If you can take more of this, the full transcript is available here .

Schultz: Republicans Want To Politically ‘Assassinate’ Pres. Obama’s Agenda

How far have we come from the era of “Dissent Is Patriotic” stickers on the bumpers of your local lefties during the Bush administration?  A host on the second-highest rated cable news network has equated political dissent with . . . assassination.   On his MSNBC show this evening, Ed Schultz stated: “Now I’m putting my cards on the table tonight as I do every night. The Republican party is on a mission to politically assassinate the president’s agenda across the board.  They want to shoot down everything.” Note how Schultz reinforces the assassination theme by adding that Republicans want to “shoot down” everything.  Does political speech get much more vile than this?  Do Schultz’s MSNBC bosses approve this kind of reckless rhetoric?

George Will: Obama Is An Expert At Selling Snake Oil

George Will on Sunday accused Barack Obama of being an expert at selling snake oil. As the Roundtable segment of ABC’s “This Week” began, host Jake Tapper asked Will if the President’s claim that Republicans “are peddling that same snake oil that they’ve been peddling now for years” will resonate with voters this November. Will marvelously responded, “No, because he is an expert on snake oil.” “This is the man who said, if we pass the $767 billion stimulus bill, which it turns out costs $862 billion, a $95 million oops, we would have unemployment at 8 percent and no higher, and it went higher,” continued Will. “This is the man who last week was out saying, ‘I’m going to give $2 billion, about $2 billion, to two companies to create about 1,600 jobs.’ That’s $1.5 million per job. That is snake oil” (video follows with partial transcript and commentary:  JAKE TAPPER, HOST: I want to start with President Obama out on the campaign trail again this week trying to sharpen his message. Here’s a glimpse. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) OBAMA: They’re not coming back and saying, “You know what? We really screwed up, but we’ve learned our lesson, and now we’ve got this new approach, and this is how things are going to turn out really well.” That’s not their argument. They are trying to sell you the same stuff that they’ve been peddling. They are peddling that same snake oil that they’ve been peddling now for years. (END VIDEO CLIP) TAPPER: So the president, George, is trying to make this not a referendum on him, but rather a choice between him and Republicans. Is it going to work? WILL: No, because he is an expert on snake oil. This is the man who said, if we pass the $767 billion stimulus bill, which it turns out costs $862 billion, a $95 million oops, we would have unemployment at 8 percent and no higher, and it went higher. This is the man who, in another form of snake oil, said we have this wonderful idea of homeowner tax credits for buying first-time homeowners, which we now realize has largely subsidized home purchases that would have been made anyway. This is the man who last week was out saying, “I’m going to give $2 billion, about $2 billion, to two companies to create about 1,600 jobs.” That’s $1.5 million per job. That is snake oil. A bit later, Tapper asked the Washington Post’s Ruth Marcus, “Is the president doing the right thing here? Is this — is this the effective message to help at least lower the losses in November? Marcus surprisingly responded: Well, that presumes there’s any effective message. And the president says, look, these guys drove the car into the ditch. Why would you give the keys back to them? The only problem with that is, who’s been driving the car for the last 18 months and where are we? Quite shocking to hear that from the Obama-loving Marcus, wouldn’t you agree?

Obama’s Gulf Spill Speech: "We Cannot Consign Our Children to this Future"

Photo via the New York Times Obama just wrapped his first address to the nation from the oval office, discussing the federal response to the BP Gulf spill and how the event relates to energy policy in general. The speech was pretty standard Obama — plenty of powerful rhetoric and sweeping appeals to look forward. What I was listening for, however, weren’t vague reassurances and calls to rally around clean energy. I was looking for any hints of the actual policy ideas the president intends to support to actually set those appeals into action. Here’s what I found: … Read the full story on TreeHugger
