Samuel L. Jackson Says His Character In “D’Jango” Is “The Most Hated Negro In Cinematic History”

He ain’t never told no lie, he ain’t never told no lie Samuel L. Jackson Says His D’Jango Unchained Character Is Most Hated Negro In Cinema Via Essence Samuel L. Jackson has made a career of playing sinister characters. But none is quite as unlikeable, or controversial, as his character Stephen in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. As the Candyland plantation’s oldest and more revered slave, Stephen, as Jackson puts it, “is the power behind the throne,” who throws a wrench in Django’s plans to rescue his wife—while providing a bevy of hearty laughs at the expense of Django and company. Peep what “Uncle Sam” had to say about his character. ESSENCE.com : What was it like to play an evil, but extremely funny, character? SAMUEL L. JACKSON : It’s great to have a character that has that kind of agenda. [Stephen] throws those great lines and [has those] relationships with people and has tons of conflicts. It’s great to be that. ESSENCE.com : Did you have any hesitation about taking on the role? JACKSON : No, Quentin called me and said he had this movie he wanted me to be in. I read the script and thought this was great. I could be as evil as I want to be and be the most hated Negro in cinematic history. I was there! ESSENCE.com : Was there any part of you that slightly resented Stephen because he ruined things for Django? JACKSON : No, I like all my characters. You can’t play a villain and think of yourself as a villain. It’s not the thing to do. You have to go about the business of doing what he does and being who he is. I like Stephen. I like the fact that Stephen knows who he is and he’s comfortable in the skin he’s in. ESSENCE.com : How do you go about preparing to play a house slave, if there is a way? JACKSON : How do you prepare? Well, you know he is. You know where he came from. You know he’s a product of his environment and he’s been there forever. He runs the plantation, he can read and write. He writes the checks. He does more than everybody knows he does. He’s essentially the power behind the thrown in the plantation. He’s got a lot of power. He’s the freest slave on the plantation. He’s not burden by any of things that all the other slaves are. He doesn’t have to go out in the fields and work. He tells people what to do. He has a position of authority. He’s authority. He’s a business man. [Laughs] Bossip was fortunate enough to be invited to the Atlanta screening of D’Jango Unchained last week and despite the repetitive use of the N-word, we were very impressed by the film. Again, Sam Jackson isn’t lying when he says you are going to HATE his character! Image via D’Jango

No Country For Cheddar Bay Biscuits: Red Lobster And Olive Garden Profits Down After Anti-Obamacare Campaign Backfires

Cheddar Bay Biscuits or healthcare? Red Lobster And Olive Garden Profits Down Ever since Darden Restaurants — the owner of the Olive Garden and Red Lobster chains — first announced its anti-Obamacare campaign, the company has had a tough couple of months. Via ThinkProgress : Darden admitted as much when it revised its predictions for latest quarterly earnings down in December, attributing the drop to “recent negative media coverage on Darden and how we might accommodate healthcare reform.” The decline in traffic comes despite the company’s efforts to revamp the menus and marketing for its flagship chains. At Olive Garden, the company rolled out an updated advertising campaign and introduced more light and affordable dishes. At Red Lobster, it added options for people who don’t like seafood. The negative press led the company to reverse course on its threat to shift employees to part-time status to avoid covering them under Obamacare. The latest report on Darden’s earnings prove that was a good move, since the restaurants did take a turn for the worse as a result of their bad publicity. Its net income fell 37 percent Well, if around half of Americans support the president, including Obamacare, then it makes sense that being a greedy azzhole about it will potentially annoy half your customers. Annoying half your customers isn’t a good business decision.

The Side-Eye: Thicky Nicki Minaj Says She’s No Longer The American Idol Angry Bird While Mariah Throws More Shade

Nicki Minaj Says Beef With Mariah Carey Is Over Despite the rest of the judges trying to get the two attention-hungry divas to play nice, the beef still seems to be brewing at the American Idol judges table. YMCMB first lady Nicki Minaj recently hinted that things have calmed down between she and Mariah , but have they really? via People Despite her and Carey’s heated exchange during auditions in Charlotte, N.C., Minaj had nothing but kind words for her fellow judges. “We’ve jelled really, really well as a group,” she told reporters. “We have a great chemistry. We have a great rhythm now together, and we really are taking it serious. … We really are rooting for the contestants and we want to find a great American Idol.” Sounds like things are all good, right? Well, not so fast. MiMi the diva had a slightly more shady response when she was questioned about Nicki: But Carey, resplendent in a floor-length red gown and diamond earrings, hinted that perhaps the claws haven’t been fully retracted. She heaped praise upon her long-time friend Jackson, called Urban an “expert” of country music and said of the group, “I think this panel is great because of the diversity.” But she dodged a question about what Minaj brings to the show. “You know, I wouldn’t feel comfortable commenting on that,” she said with a smile. “But thank you for the question.” SMH. These two really need to get it together before the show airs.

Dude-Where Is My Stylist? Kristen Stewart Rocks Her Trampire Twat Steez To The Premiere Of “On The Road”

What the hell is this broad wearing?!? Kristen Stewarts Wears Hideous Sheer Dress To “On The Road” Premiere According to TMZ reports : A confused Kristen Stewart must have thought she was walking the worst ever Victoria’s Secret runway show, because she showed up to the NYC premiere of “On the Road” in this bizarre retro bra and panty sheer paneled dress thing last night. Although the hot neon Christian Louboutin heels are fierce — but perhaps slightly too big — they do nothing for the unfortunate Erdem smock. While KStew is back with Robert Pattinson, she may now want to break up with her stylist and re-issue her infamous apology, “I’m deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I’ve caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected.” On a positive note, at least the 22-year-old can finally say “Twilight” is no longer the worst thing she’s ever been in. Kristen looks like a crack slore in a Japanese cartoon. That is all. Check out more pics of her struggle below. Images via SplashNews

It’s Official: Tyler Perry Lands A Drama AND Comedy Series On OWN

Will you give him the benefit of the doubt and watch an episode? Our favorite minstrel man is back on network television with not one but two new shows that are set for production next year. Tyler Perry’s teamed up with his number one cheerleader Oprah and her OWN Network, where he’ll be writing, directing, and executive producing “The Haves and the Have Nots”; a drama about a family and their housekeeper and “Love Thy Neighbor”; a multicamera comedy set in a diner. According to The Hollywood Reporter , this is just the first two of many projects the duo’s got planned: Two months after inking Tyler Perry to an overall deal and announcing its move into scripted fare, OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network has announced the pair of series to be overseen by the multihyphenate. Perry will write, direct and executive produce a comedy and a drama for the Harpo and Discovery Communications joint venture, with both series hailing from his Tyler Perry Studios banner for OWN. The two entries will begin production early next year and bow in mid-2013. The Haves and the Have Nots is a drama about the dynamics of the affluent Cyrer family and the impoverished family of their housekeeper, Hanna, and the obstacles and secrets that exist within both. Love Thy Neighbor, meanwhile, is a multicamera comedy set at Love’s Diner, where every day the menu serves up good food, great laughs, valuable life lessons and a lot of love for its zany neighbors. Episode orders for both projects are unclear with additional writers and producers expected to be added. OWN inked Perry — the prolific writer, director, producer and actor behind the Madea features, among several other stage and small-screen projects — to a multiyear pact in October to produce original content for the cabler. Before the deal, Perry’s TV efforts were housed at Turner-owned TBS, where the network launched half-hours Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, Meet the Browns and For Better or Worse. Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav, speaking Dec. 4 at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in London, expressed confidence in OWN, noting its recent ratings growth puts the channel as one of the top three growing networks and noting he expected it to be profitable in the second half of 2013 as he forecast its growth to go from 80 million to 85 million homes. “The cherry on top is we got Tyler Perry,” Zaslav told investors at the time. November marked OWN’s 10th consecutive month of year-over-year ratings growth. Will you watch? Images via WENN/tumblr
