Melanie Amaro Expresses Shock, Appreciation Over X Factor Victory

Melanie Amaro accomplished the very difficult on the first season of The X Factor : the front-runner since day one, this talented singer maintained that status for months and went on to win the title last night . And she still can’t believe it. “I felt as though I was hearing things, to be honest,” Amaro told reporters today of when Steve Jones announced her at the winner. “I had to check my ear real quick. It shocked me a lot. It really did.” Melanie, of course, is now $5 million richer, a wild sum for anyone, let alone a young woman who didn’t grow up with much. “Life will change a lot,” she says. “The most I have ever had before was $200, if I was lucky.” A piano teacher from Florida, Amaro says she’ll purchase a new home for her mother with the winnings, along with a lifetime supply of chicken for herself. Seriously. (“I can’t live without it. It’s my favorite food.”) Overall, she just wants to give a shout-out to her fans. “Thank you to all my supporters who’ve supported me and have been behind me since day one and believed in me when I didn’t even have the heart to believe in myself,” she says. “Even when I went home, you guys still pushed and sent all your love my way.” You’re welcome, Melanie! Did do you think Amaro deserved to win?

Payroll Tax Cut: Extended!!

House Republican leaders agreed Thursday to accept a temporary extension of the existing payroll tax cut, bowing to political pressure after a lengthy standoff. Under a deal reached between House and Senate leaders, the House will now approve as early as Friday the two-month extension of a payroll tax holiday. The extension, which also includes unemployment benefits, was approved by the Senate Saturday. A committee will work on legislation to extend both through 2012. House Republicans – who rejected an almost identical deal on Tuesday – collapsed under the political rubble that has accumulated, much of it from their own party. With the bill set to keep the payroll tax at 4.2% instead of rising to 6.2%, the GOP, who abhors tax hikes, was dead set on killing the bill because … who knows honestly. Worried that the blockade would do serious damage to their appeal to voters, House Speaker John Boehner was determined to put the issue behind Republicans. After his conversation with lawmakers, the speaker conceded it might not have been “politically the smartest thing in the world” for House Republicans. The reason? Putting themselves between a tax cut and the 160 million American workers who would benefit from it, and to allowing President Obama to seize momentum. Makes sense. Might as well actually govern.

Justin Bieber Sings in the Holidays on The X Factor Finale

The X Factor crowned its first-ever U.S. champion last night… but it took two hours to do so. Indeed, Melanie Amaro did not hear the great news until many acts had taken the stage, foremost among them a certain blonde-haired 17-year old. Justin Bieber sang in the holiday via a pair of classics. First, he teamed with iconic artist Stevie Wonder on “Chestnuts Roasting.” Then, he made the dreams of Drew Ryniewicz come true by asking her to close out “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” along his side on stage. Watch below to see both covers, including Justin getting his major dance on for the second… Justin Bieber and Stevie Wonder – Chestnuts Roasting Justin Bieber and Drew Ryniewicz – Santa Claus Is Coming To Town

Abercrombie & Fitch Seeks Legal Protection to Ridicule The Situation

Abercrombie & Fitch is trying to end their ongoing feud with Jersey Shore star The Situation, asking a judge to dismiss his lawsuit against the clothing retailer. If you recall, the ongoing war between Sitch and A&F began back in August when A&F publicly offered to pay The Situation NOT to wear its overpriced duds. A month later, Sitch (real name Mike Sorrentino) sued them, claiming it ripped off his “GTL” and “Situation” trademarks on a line of guido-mocking t-shirts. Now, A&F is trying to put an end to the back-and-forth, claiming he had no right to sue them in the first place because he doesn’t own those very trademarks. He has applied for them, but doesn’t own them. Big, legal difference there. Moreover, A&F claims The Situation’s application for “Gym Tan Laundry” has actually been suspended, because MTV already owns “Gym Tanning Laundry.” The US Patent & Trademark Office thinks they’re too similar. Makes sense. Trademarks aside, A&F insists its shirts are still protected under a law that allows parody as free speech … in other words, the shirts are a harmless joke. Their legal argument is basically that Sitch is full of crap and can’t take a joke. The Jersey Shore star has yet to respond … but watch the Season 5 trailer : Jersey Shore Season 5 Trailer

Nicole Scherzinger Speaks on Rachel Crow Ousting

For the record, Nicole Scherzinger did not send Rachel Crow home on Thursday night. This X Factor judge instead chose to let America decide between the 13-year old and Marcus Canty, yet Scherzinger is the panelist facing the harshest fan rebuke after Crow’s name was called for elimination . “My heart comes from the right place, so I get really sensitive when people are negative,” the former Pussycat Doll told reporters after the show. “Don’t [critics] know I only want the best for every single person?” Nicole added that she thought Canty would be selected by voters, though they never got a chance to hear Crow’s incredible survival song . “When I saw that look on her face, [I felt] that I had let her down, like I dropped her,” Scherzinger, who shed tears for 30 minutes after the episode, said. “I could have been holding on and I dropped her. She is the sunshine of our show, so it’s hard to see her cry.” Crow, however, has come out and said the public should not blame Nicole , while the young crooner’s fortunes are already looking up: sources say Disney has requested a meeting with Rachel.

The X Factor Results Show: Down to Four…

Another young contestant got sent home this week on The X Factor. A week after Drew Ryniewicz was reduced to tears, the same fate befell 13-year old Rachel Crow, who fell into the bottom two and then got eliminated after the judges deadlocked and the show left the final decision up to viewers. After falling into her mother’s arms following the reading of the verdict, Crow – whose Tuesday night performances you can watch HERE – composed herself and said: “I love you so much, everybody, for voting for me and thank you for giving me this because without you I am nothing. I hope this is not my ending. I know it’s not and I will go so far. I promise you!” What do you think? Did Rachel deserve to go home this week?
