REVIEW: The Swell Season Revisits the Stars of Once and Finds Bittersweet Romance

Once casts a long shadow over the The Swell Season , a black-and-white tour documentary co-directed by Nick August-Perna, Chris Dapkins and Carlo Mirabella-Davis. For one thing the film, which follows musicians-turned-movie stars Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová as they perform under the band name of the title, wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for Once — the incredible, unexpected success of the Irish indie romance made celebrities of its leads and netted them an Academy Award for their song “Falling Slowly,” one of many we hear them play in the doc. Early on, we’re shown Hansard’s mother hefting her son’s Oscar and speaking of him with pride, musing that if the two musicians were to get married, their children would be able to say “ma and dad have an Oscar each!” Once has allowed the long-struggling Hansard and considerably younger Irglová to become a coveted live act, and it’s on tour that The Swell Season catches them, as the first flush of celebration has faded and weariness has begun to set in.

Hip-Hop Dad Fights Fatherhood Stereotypes With New Book

The Urban Daily sports blogger Jamiyl Samuels aims to show Black fathers in a positive light with his upcoming book. “Pass The Torch: How A Young Black Father Challenges the ‘Deadbeat Dad’ Stereotype” tackles the hot-button issue of fatherhood in the Black community and the affect the lack of a father figure has on young Black males. Disturbed by the negative and stereotypical portrayal of young Black fathers in the media, Samuels speaks from his own personal experiences growing up without a father and draws a parallel to the equally criticized world of Hip Hop whose artists mostly came from broken homes, but rose from their rough upbringing to break the cycle of abandonment with their own children.  “Pass The Torch” praises Black fathers who do right by their children and offers a fresh perspective on a controversial issue. “Pass The Torch” will be released through Samuels’ own  W.R.E.a.C Havoc Publishing imprint via Createspace.com and Amazon.com in the near future. You Can’t Be Serious: Mother Gets Felony Charge For Spanking Her Own Child

Damn! What has the world come to? A felony … for spanking your child? Everyone has their own method of disciplining their children but is a simple spanking abuse? “You don’t spank children today,” said Judge Jose Longoria. “In the old days, maybe we got spanked, but there was a different quarrel. You don’t spank children.” Rosalina Gonzales had pleaded guilty to a felony charge of injury to a child for what prosecutors had described as a “pretty simple, straightforward spanking case.” They noted she didn’t use a belt or leave any bruises, just some red marks. As part of the plea deal, Gonzales will serve five years probation, during which time she’ll have to take parenting classes, follow CPS guidelines, and make a $50 payment to the Children’s Advocacy Center. She was arrested back in December after the child’s paternal grandmother noticed red marks on the child’s rear end. The grandmother took the girl, who was two years-old at the time, to the hospital to be checked out. Gonzales who doesn’t have custody of the child or her other two children, is trying to get them back, but until CPS feels she is ready the kids are living with their paternal grandmother. Hmm, wonder if the kids were taken as a result of the “spanking.” Guess it’s “time-out” for unruly little tikes now. Source

Karenna Gore and Drew Schiff: Separated

June is not a good month for marriage if your last name is Gore. One week after news of an Al and Tipper Gore divorce shocked the political world, we’ve now learned that one of their children’s marriage is on the rocks. Oldest daughter Karenna Gore Schiff has split from her husband of 12 years, Drew Schiff. However, a close family source says “they are not divorced.” Karenna, 36, and Drew, 44, “have been separated for a couple of months and in marriage counseling. It’s amicable and they are in therapy together.” Karenna Gore married Drew Schiff in the late 1990s . The couple, who live in New York City, have three children: Wyatt, 10, Anna, 8, and Oscar, 3. Drew Schiff works for a biotech investment company. Although Karenna Gore is working on a documentary project, she is primarily “being a mom,” the Schiff family friend tells the New York Daily News . Karenna is looking to her parents for support in these times. “Both Al and Tipper have been to New York to help Karenna with the kids since her separation,” said the family friend. “Like all families, they rally.” Kalee Kreider, a spokeswoman for the former vice president, told People that “Neither the Gores nor the Schiffs plan to comment” on the subject.
