Washington Post: Independence Day an Atheist Holiday

Someone get Lee Greenwood on the phone; he’s going to want to know about this. In a front-page Style section report July 5, The Washington Post breathed a sigh of relief that Independence Day gives Americans a break from those God-heavy holidays like Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving. “The trouble with most major holidays in the United States, if you’re an atheist, is that it’s difficult to ignore the ‘holy day’ etymology,” Monica Hesse reported. “But not the Fourth of July. The Fourth is a little deity-free celebration stationed in the middle of summer for believers and non-believers alike.” Finally, a break from those religious zealots Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. Thank God. Hesse highlighted an annual gathering of atheists in Lorton, Va., a suburb of Washington, D.C. With tongues presumably in cheeks, the organizers promoted the event as “Ungodly Leaders to Gather at Potomac Picnic.” She defended atheists as misunderstood. “The most common misapprehension they encounter is that they must be immoral – that, lacking the promise or threat of an afterlife, they have no incentive to be good,” she said. “They atheists here find this particularly offensive, as they say they believe in kindness for the sake of kindness, making the most of the brief existence they believe humans are allowed.” Hesse illustrated the loving tolerance of atheists, and their acceptance for differing opinions and views. “‘I’m opposed to the illusion that there are really many difference between atheists at all,'” attendee Don Wharton was quoted as saying. “After all,” Hesse added, “they are here to celebrate the things that bind them together rather than the things that separate them.” What binds them together? Victimhood, according to Hesse. “Most of them have been told, at one point or another, that they are going to hell,” Hesse noted, “which, when you think about it, is a fairly pointless threat to an atheist, like warning someone that you’re sending them to Narnia.” Like this article? Dr. Dre ‘Didn’t Even Get A Chance To Finish’ Leaked Song ‘Under Pressure’

The Doc laments online leak: ‘It’s just one of the things we have to deal with in the business today.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Dr. Dre Photo: MTV News Dr. Dre fans got a taste of his long-awaited Detox LP a couple of weeks ago when “Under Pressure,” a track featuring Doc collaborator Jay-Z , leaked online . Too bad it wasn’t the real deal. The next day, Dre released a statement saying that the track was “incomplete” and that “when it’s ready, you’ll be hearing it from me.” Recently, the beatmaking legend further explained that the leaked song was still in its early stages and lacked Dre’s renowned polish. “I didn’t even get a chance to finish the record,” Dre told HardKnock.tv in a video interview at the ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Music Awards on Friday. The hitmaking icon, who was honored with the society’s Founders Award , said that a lot of work still remained on the version of the hotly-anticipated collabo that hit the web. “The vocals are real rough, it’s not blended right … a hook is not even on the song. It’s not done. The music isn’t done.” Dre, who was being honored for his game-changing career, also lamented the reality of digital leaks that the music industry must now contend with. “It’s just like one of the things that we have to deal with today in the business,” Dre said. “Because of technology and the Internet and all that, it’s like, real easy for somebody to steal your sh–. What can you do?” However, Dre remains focused on the task at hand and said that he planned to hit the lab after collecting his award that night. “I’m leaving this event, going right to the studio, I’m gettin’ it crackin,'” said Dre. The Doc said he’s looking to get Detox to fans by the end of 2010 and is working to make sure that it’s worth the wait. “[I’m] trying to put it out by the end of the fall. Trying to give everybody what they’ve been waitin’ for and make sure they’re not disappointed; that’s all I’m doing.” What do you think of “Under Pressure”? Sound off in the comments below! Actually, It’s Called Football: 5 Things Other Than The World Cup That Are Way More Popular Outside America

After Landon Donovan’s triumphant last-minute goal last Wednesday, it seems like Soccer Fever has hit America. Unfortunately, it’s a bit of a low-grade fever, maybe running a toasty 99.7, rather than the 106 degree scorcher that soccer brings out virtually everywhere else in the world. It’s just a sad fact of our country — some may certainly love it, but by and large, the U.S. just isn’t that into The World Cup. But don’t feel bad, soccer! Here are five other things that are way more popular outside America.

Three Things That Will Change Radically With Climate: Drug & Alcohol Use, & FEMA’s Budget

Image credit: FloodDamage.Data.org I probably could have listed other things that will increase commensurate with climate change: like doomsday cults, prohibitionist movements and radical political groups, for example. But I wanted to focus on investment and budget control opportunities people are overlooking. Let’s start by analyzing the latter. In their 2002 paper, The Political Economy of FEMA Disaster Payments, (pdf file) Garrett & Sobel examined whether congressional and presidential influences affect … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Carrie Underwood and Mike Fisher

Carrie Underwood, 27, who previously said she wasn#39;t stressing about the big day and even said she hadn#39;t really given it much thought, now admits there#39;s “a lot to do.” “We need to get a running order going on. Rihanna Graces Elle Cover, Talks Style

We profiled Rihanna’s red hair earlier this week. We also took a listen (and liking) to her hot new collaboration with Eminem from his upcoming album, Recovery . The girl can definitely be pretty bad ass. But inside is also a fashionista waiting to come out. Gracing the cover of the July issue of Elle , Rihanna muses on fashion and has a few things to say about glamorous, often unattainable – ideals of designers. “I respect designers who aren’t afraid to go outside the box,” she says. “I went to a Jean Paul Gaultier show, and I saw girls who are thicker than me, beautiful and voluptuous and different ethnicities. That made me so excited,” the singer continued. “I thought, Okay, I can work that, for sure.” Rihanna in Elle … and in concert. Of course, the beauty is leaving her mark on couture, as well: “It’s clear there are definitely fewer black women in the high-fashion industry. One of the things I respected most about Gucci was that they did a print campaign with me.” “I’m a black girl on a fashion spread for Gucci—that was a big deal.”
