Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), the newest member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, claimed today that the coal industry doesn’t receive any government subsidies, unlike every other form of energy. The former governor of coal-state West Virginia, who famously fired a rifle at clean energy legislation in a campaign ad, argued that the Obama administration has “villainized” coal. For the first time during the uprising in Egypt, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who appeared on all the major Sunday talk shows this morning, called for Egypt to hold free and fair elections that would ensure “real democracy.” This was another sign that the Administration was distancing itself from Egypt’s President, Hosni Mubarak, since a transition to democratic government would clearly result… Broadcasting platform : YouTube Source : Think Progress Discovery Date : 30/01/2011 19:10 Number of articles : 2

Chris Matthews Attacks Michele Bachmann as ‘Zombie-Like’ and ‘Moonie-Like’ for Defending Free Enterprise on BBC

MSNBC host Chris Matthews cannot understand how conservatives could think that free enterprise is somehow American, and that being anti-free enterprise seems anti-American. On Tuesday night's Hardball, Matthews boosted a new effort by Democrats like David Brock and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend to organize their own independent-expenditure campaign to beat Republicans. Matthews brought on Townsend, who couldn't even win a race for governor of a blue state (Maryland) to explain how she would make the Democrats victorious. Matthews aired BBC video of Rep. Michele Bachmann (clearly borrowed from the Think Progress blog , since you can see the “Pro” of their logo), and attacked her as like a zombie, a Moonie, and a Manchurian Candidate: MATTHEWS: Look at her eye contact. I asked her when we had her on election night if she's under hypnosis . She doesn't answer the question. She looks straight ahead in that kind of zombie-like manner, like she's waiting for somebody to flash a card, like in “Manchurian Candidate.” I mean, I don't know what her state is. She apparently just got blown away running for leadership, so the members of the House on the Republican side — read more

Are Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin Cashing in on 9/11?

Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck are rendezvousing in Alaska this Saturday to commemorate 9/11. The event will likely share some similarities to Beck's “Restoring Honor” rally in DC. But with one important difference: This one costs attendees. Tickets for the event range from a low of $73.75 per person (including taxes and fees) to a high of $225, for a spot in the arena and participation in a 'meet and greet.' There was no indication to whom or what the proceeds will go. The costly ticket price has some on the left accusing Beck and Palin of profiting off 9/11: * What's the $$$ For? asks libertarian blogger Doug Mataconis at Outside the Beltway: “Charging for a 9/11 rally does sound odd, although presumably at least a portion of the ticket price is going toward facility rental. Nonetheless, if I was putting out that much money for a political rally I’d want to know where the profits were going.” * Shameful, writes Huffington Post contributor Bob Cesca on his blog: “These people ought to be ashamed on themselves. Unless the proceeds are going to the families of the victims (who Glenn Beck hates), I can't think of anything more gratuitous and shameless — other than, perhaps, a 'genuine slivers of Ground Zero' mail order business.” Lee Fang at Think Progress adds, “In addition to using September 11th as a launching pad to score political points, the right is now using the day to rake in cash.” * Don't Raise a Stink Just Yet, writes Christian Heinze at GOP12: “It seems a bit unseemly to charge for an event like this, but the devil or angel will be in the details of where that money goes.” * This Is a Patriotic Event, writes Sarah Palin on her Facebook page: “We can count on Glenn to make the night interesting and inspiring, and I can think of no better way to commemorate 9/11 than to gather with patriots who will 'never forget.'” http://www.theatlanticwire.com/opinions/view/opinion/Are-Glenn-Beck-and-Sarah-Pa… added by: TimALoftis

BP Buys Scientists’ Silence For $250 Per Hour

That’s 24 minutes right there… photo: Gisela Giardino via flickr. Perhaps this sort of non-disclosure agreement is normal, but for BP and its growing reputation of trying to stop the free flow of information regarding the Gulf oil spill as much as its trying to stop the flowing oil itself, it doesn’t look good: Think Progress reports that BP’s agreement with scientists it has recruited to work on their behalf in the

We Spend $1 Billion/year Fighting each Al Qaeda Member in Afghanistan

Think Progress does the math on Panetta’s admission that there are just 100 al Qaeda members in Afghanistan, and discovers we’ve got 1,000 American troops in Afghanistan for each al Qaeda member. The U.S. has committed nearly 100,000 troops to the mission in Afghanistan. ABC This Week host Jake Tapper asked CIA Director Leon Panetta how big is the al Qaeda threat that the soldiers are combating: The 100,000 U.S. forces that have been tasked to dismantle the 100 or so al Qaeda members — a ratio of 1000:1 — is complicated by the fact that we are also engaged in operations going after the Taliban leadership. Now let me add to their math. Even Afghan war fans admit that it costs $1 million a year–on top of things like salary–to support a US service member in Afghanistan. Michael O’Hanlon, a defense analyst at the Brookings Institution, says one useful way to break down these huge numbers is to look at how much it costs to send just one soldier to war. “We are at a point where it’s unbelievably costing us close to a million dollars, in additional costs — above and beyond salaries and the equipment that’s already in the inventory — per soldier or Marine per year,” he says. Fighting in Afghanistan means fighting in one of the most remote regions on Earth, and that plays a large role in the seemingly astronomical figure. Dov Zakheim, a former chief financial officer for the Defense Department, says the $1 million price tag includes getting the soldier to Afghanistan, getting his equipment to Afghanistan, and moving the soldier around once in the country. So 1,000 US troops per al Qaeda member, at a cost of $1 million each. That’s $1 billion a year we spend for each al Qaeda member to fight our war in Afghanistan. This sort of adds a new twist to that old Einstein quip about the definition of insanity being doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Because we’re doing the same thing over and over again–at a cost of $1 billion a year per nominal opponent–and expecting anything other than bankruptcy. http://emptywheel.firedoglake.com/2010/06/27/we-spend-1-billionyear-on-each-al-q… added by: Stoneyroad

Fox News Still Bad At Math

A couple weeks ago, Fox News had a pretty big math mistake in a pie chart. Now, they've ditched the chart, but still haven't quite nailed the math part yet. Contribute: Add an image, link, video or comment

Town Hall Crazies Go Through the Ideological Rabbit Hole

Unalloyed xenophobic rage presents a challenge similar to one posed by habitual lying—just as it’s hard to keep up with one’s own falsehoods, it’s difficult to remember whether shouting “Heil Hitler!” at a Jew is good or bad.
