M. Night Shyamalan Says ‘Last Airbender’ Was ‘Enhanced’ By 3-D

Director tried to use much-maligned post-production 3-D subtly By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz M. Night Shyamalan Photo: Brian Jacks/ MTV News As movie studios and filmmakers rushed to capitalize on the 3-D wave, there have been plenty of successes (“Avatar,” “Toy Story 3,” “How to Train Your Dragon”) and a few flops — particularly when the post-production conversion is applied (“Clash of the Titans,” “The Last Airbender”). When MTV News caught up with “The Last Airbender” director M. Night Shyamalan to discuss his involvement in this week’s “Devil,” we asked for his thoughts on the controversy surrounding the new practice of post-production 3-D. “I knew as soon as we were deciding to do the conversion that we were going to get that [criticism] because it has a stigma to it,” Shyamalan said of the flack critics and fans heaped on “Airbender.” “I definitely do everything very minimal — the sound, the movement of the camera — and when I was doing the 3-D, I decided to do it really gently and just enhance the shot,” he explained. “If we went shot-for-shot and I showed it to you, it was just enhanced. ‘Wow, I can see the depth. Wow, it does feel more grand. Wow, it does feel more beautiful. I’m more into it.’ ” Shyamalan said his goal was to use 3-D subtly, but the format is perhaps too new to be used in that manner, versus the in-your-face, arm-reaching-into-the-audience 3-D of years past. “That’s not my aesthetic,” he said. The director said he loved the film’s 3-D team, which was very protective of the film and staying true to the artistry of it. “We would talk through the philosophy of each shot a little bit,” he said. Shyamalan said the conversion process was a complete learning experience for him. “I enjoyed learning about it a great deal,” he said. “This whole movie was about me learning things I didn’t know, and I’m glad I learned about it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Last Airbender.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Spencer Pratt Offers Heidi Montag ‘Most Sincere Apologies’

‘I horribly embarrassed the one person that meant the world to me,’ reality star admits. By James Dinh Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag Photo: Marcel Thomas/ Getty Images From the sex tape threats to Twitter blows, it’s clear Spencer Pratt has grown an incredibly large distaste for Heidi Montag . But now it seems as if the reality star has had a change of heart and issued an apology to his soon-to-be-ex-wife. “Divorce can be a trying, draining, and emotionally devastating experience for all involved,” he admitted to People magazine. “Despite these hardships, most individuals manage to conduct themselves with dignity and maturity. I did not — I failed spectacularly.” The 27-year-old feels most sorry for his recent antics directed at Montag, saying, “I horribly embarrassed the one person that meant the world to me. For my outrageous and infantile behavior, I offer Heidi my most sincere apologies.” The reality star, who just a few weeks ago threatened to leak Montag’s alleged sex tape , says that he hopes one day his former “Hills” co-star will find it in her heart to forgive him. “Over the years, her love, support, and friendship were always given, but never properly cherished. I let her down,” he revealed. “She never deserved the pain and anguish I put her through, and although I don’t expect it, I hope in time she’ll be able to forgive me.” While Speidi seem to be no more, the reality star said that he will always hold a place in his heart for the starlet. “Even though our relationship has changed, I will always count her among my best friends,” he said. In June, Montag added her two cents on the couple’s divorce, saying, “Spencer and I are finally moving forward with our lives, but with any divorce, there is much to work through. We’ve been together almost five years — there are assets to divide, work to be discussed, and we share our puppies.” Pratt is not only apologizing to Montag but also to the sparing few fans he has. “I need to apologize to Heidi and my 11.5 fans. I’m an epic douche — and you deserve better,” he tweeted Wednesday. How exactly is Pratt going to make amends for his actions and see the light? The star says he is planning “intense soul-searching” and going forward with the “appropriate avenues for my issues” in order to turn his life around. Art for first single from Loud shows singer with long, red hairdo. By James Dinh Rihanna (file) Photo: Jamie McCarthy/ WireImage Rihanna has ditched her clothes (and her short hairdo) for the cover art of her new single “Only Girl (In The World).” In the photo, which surfaced on Rap-Up.com , the Barbadian pop singer is seen crouched down in a field, wearing nothing but jewelry and holding a rose-embroidered dress that is bright red; her hair is long and wavy and a similar shade. “Only Girl (In The World)” is the first release from the singer’s fifth album, Loud . Earlier this week, Rihanna chatted with fans about the album’s direction , saying, “I made sure not to let you down with my music! You guys are always defending me, so now you’ve got some great songs to justify it. I didn’t want to go backward and remake [2007’s] Good Girl Gone Bad .” In addition to the cover art, the singer’s official website has been revamped to showcase her most recent tattoo, which says “rebelle fleur” (French for “rebel flower”). The New York Post reported that the singer recently shot advertisements for her debut fragrance, Reb’l Fleur, at New York complex Chelsea Piers with the help of Frank Ginsberg. This isn’t the first time that Rihanna has stripped down for a photo shoot. Last year, she wrapped her bare torso in barbed wire for the cover of her single “Russian Roulette” and posed topless for the cover of “Wait Your Turn.” What do you think of the cover of Rihanna’s new single? Lady Gaga Book Shows Monster Ball Behind The Scenes

Photographer Terry Richardson follows singer everywhere, Gaga tells Vogue Hommes Japan. By James Dinh Lady Gaga Photo: Matt Harper/ MTV News Dressing up as her male alter-ego, Jo Calderone, isn’t the only surprise Lady Gaga has in store for fans in the upcoming issue of Vogue Hommes Japan. The singer, who is decked out in a string of raw meat with an open mouth on an alternate cover of the mag, dished about an upcoming Monster Ball book with photographer Terry Richardson and incorporating her artistic vision with another photographer, Steven Klein, on her “Alejandro” clip. “He wanted to do a book about the Monster Ball,” she says in the magazine, which hit stands Sunday. “He wanted to shoot me backstage, not onstage, and look at who I am offstage. He’s on the bus with me. He just follows me everywhere. He’ll photograph me when I’m changing — those quick changes during the show. And sometimes I’ll have to pee during the show, and I’m always screaming, ‘Terry, get out!’ ” But Gaga believes that Richardson remains keen on keeping the project full of candid moments, saying, “And he’ll be saying, ‘It’s so beautiful. You’re so punk!’ If only my fans knew I was peeing in a beer cup backstage.” Whether it’s her red-carpet fashion or the outfits donned during her everlasting Monster Ball Tour, the singer has always had an eye for pushing the fashion envelope . Things were no different when she had the opportunity to work on her “Alejandro” video with another critically acclaimed photographer: Steven Klein. “We are both very strong-willed, and we both have very specific visions,” she said. “And I knew his specific vision and he knew mine so that it was like tugging at a rope together.” But Mother Monster has ended up tying what she calls “a beautiful knot” with Klein despite their creative differences. “I wanted to bring him out of his comfort zone, and he wanted to bring me out of mine,” she explained. “I think what made the ‘Alejandro’ video so successful was getting Steven to look at pop choreography and my aesthetic in putting things that are really interesting of how to sell messages and metaphors into a pop landscape, so it suddenly becomes universal and means something completely different. And him stripping me down, taking off all my makeup, no eyelashes, no liner, saying ‘I’m cutting all of your hair off’ and not tanned. … For me, I was hyperventilating, but it did force me to be myself.” Being a pop star who takes her image by the reins only makes Gaga comparable to her idols of earlier decades, she says. “Everybody knew about it. It wasn’t like you had to do the research or pull the references back then. It seemed innately part of who everybody was,” she said, comparing herself to pop stars from the ’70s. “The art and the fashion and the music world were all intertwined, and I guess that is the world that I live in today just through who I truly am.” Are you excited for Gaga’s upcoming project with Terry Richardson? ‘Zombieland 2’ Director Giddy About 3-D Zombie Splatter

“I think it’s cool to see stuff fly at your face. The idea of zombies splattering into the lens is exciting for me,” Reuben Fleischer tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian Jesse Eisenberg in “Zombieland” Photo: Sony Pictures When MTV News caught up with Reuben Fleischer last week, he was hanging out in a dusty junkyard outside downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was hardly a glamorous day on the set of a studio picture, but that was where Fleischer had chosen to make “30 Minutes or Less,” his follow-up to the $75.6 million-grossing “Zombieland.” But, as he oversaw some wacky pyrotechnic displays at the junkyard, he was thinking about the direction for “Zombieland 2” and shared some of his thoughts with us. First off, Fleischer confirmed he’ll shoot the sequel with 3-D cameras, rather than use a controversial post-production process. “When it comes to 3-D, I feel pretty strongly that you should shoot it in camera,” he said. “I feel like it just looks so much better. If you’re going to make a 3-D movie, go ahead and make a 3-D movie. I would definitely, if we do ‘Zombieland 2,’ make it in 3-D and want to shoot it in 3-D.” While no stars yet have deals in place, Fleischer said “all the cast is excited to return,” including Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin and Jesse Eisenberg, who also stars in “30 Minutes.” Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are currently at work on the script, and Fleischer said they’re exploring multiple scenarios, from a plot that picks up shortly after the conclusion of the first film to one that begins further into the future. Regardless, though, “Zombieland 2” will likely explore pre-zombie days as well. “One of the fun things about ‘Zombieland’ is it jumps all over the place in terms of the storyline,” Fleischer said. “It’ll go to before zombies to after zombies and all around those worlds. What’s fun about the sequel is we have freedom and flexibility to show different periods. We might have scenes before the zombies, or we might have some months after, or potentially stuff further down the road. Through the voice-over and the way the movie is structured, we can really explore all different sides of it.” “Zombieland 2” was announced as a 3-D film back in December, when the heady glow of “Avatar” began to consume all of Hollywood. In the months since, many 3-D films have failed to connect with audiences and a sort of 3-D fatigue has set in among many moviegoers. Yet, Fleischer is not worried about backlash, nor does he agree with what James Cameron said recently about how “Piranha 3-D,” a new horror movie, “cheapen[s] the medium.” “I love 3-D” Fleischer said. “I have a hard time saying when it’s not done well, because I have almost a childlike experience watching 3-D. It’s just so cool to me when stuff comes out of the screen. That may sound na

Fellow rapper Nelly joins the MC as he performs at a club in Atlanta. By Mawuse Ziegbe T.I. and Nelly (file) Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images T.I. isn’t letting his legal situation hold him back from rocking the stage. Just days after getting busted for alleged possession of drugs, Tip showed up in an Atlanta nightclub on Friday and ripped the mic. In a video posted online, the King of the South spits a fiery rendition of Urban Legend’s “Motivation” at a venue crowded with fans thrusting their camera phones in the air. Sporting a white tee from his Akoo clothing line and a black baseball cap, the ATL MC bellowed his flow over the screams from the amped-up crowd. St. Louis hip-hop star Nelly hopped up next to the embattled MC as he went into the hit single “U Don’t Know Me.” The set shows confidence and resolve from a superstar in a precarious position with the law. T.I. and his wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle were arrested on Wednesday night in Los Angeles after making an illegal U-turn. Police searched the car after allegedly noticing the scent of marijuana wafting from the vehicle and found a number of pills which were later identified as ecstasy . T.I.’s club appearance is the rapper’s first post-arrest foray into the spotlight, but his lady has been expressing her thoughts on the Internet. The day after the bust, T.I.’s wife thanked supporters on Twitter for all of their e-love. “Jus wanted 2say thank u 2every1 dats been leaving encouraging msgs & prayers!” Tiny tweeted on Thursday. “We love u guys:) going 2bed now! So glad 2b n a nice clean bed.” However, on Friday, Tiny lashed out at a critic online who, responding to reports that the reality star and her hubby were caught with methamphetamines, suggested she should switch up her Twitter nickname. “U da real dummy cause u believe everything u hear!” Tiny replied to @ totallytaylor25 who re-tweeted Perez Hilton’s missive that the former Xscape singer should change her Twitter handle to @ MajorMethMama. “I don’t even no wat meth look like! Laura Ingraham and Greg Gutfeld Rip Richard Engel’s Silly Saddam Remarks

Laura Ingraham and Greg Gutfeld had some fun Thursday evening bashing NBC foreign correspondent Richard Engel for absurd comments he made on the “Today” show this week. As NewsBusters reported Tuesday, Engel that morning told NBC’s Ann Curry: If there had been no invasion Saddam would still be in power. He was probably getting more moderate. He was being welcomed into the, into, by, by a lot of European countries, he was being welcomed in Eastern Europe in particular. He was heading in a, in a direction of accommodation. On Thursday’s “O’Reilly Factor,” substitute host Ingraham and guest Gutfeld had a field day with what the former labeled “The Dumbest Things of the Week” (video follows with transcript and commentary): LAURA INGRAHAM: In the “Back of the Book” segment tonight, “The Dumbest Things of the Week.” Is NBC News making excuses for Saddam Hussein? Regardless of your thoughts on Iraq, one thing most people agree on is that getting rid of Saddam was a good thing. But some are wondering if NBC’s chief foreign correspondent, Richard Engle, doesn’t miss the good old days when Saddam was still around. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) RICHARD ENGLE, NBC CHIEF FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT: If there had been no invasion, Saddam would still be in power. He was probably getting more moderate. He was being welcomed into the — into — by a lot of European countries. He was being welcomed in Eastern Europe, in particular. He was heading in a direction of accommodation. The sanctions regime that was holding him in place was starting to fail. So, I think it would be somewhat of a basket case, but it would be — Iran would be a lot more contained. (END VIDEO CLIP) INGRAHAM: Joining us now from New York is Greg Gutfeld, host of “Red Eye” and the author of “The Bible of Unspeakable Truths.” So Greg, as far as I can tell, Saddam was on the verge of having his own reality show. GREG GUTFELD, HOST, “RED EYE”: I mean, you have to figure out he said he would be more moderate. You have to ask him, what does he mean by moderate? Was he talking about alcohol intake? Was he going to cut back on his booze? Or was he going to only gas half as many Kurds or tell his sons they could only rape women every other weekend? Pr maybe he was becoming more environmentally friendly and was going to use renewable car batteries when he electrocuted his citizens. So we need — we need to give specifics on what he meant by moderation. INGRAHAM: I think he was clearly going green, Greg. He was making inroads with Eastern Europe. I don’t know what countries in Eastern Europe? Poland? Old Czechoslovakia? What countries was he getting close to? I just don’t recall that. GUTFELD: He does have a point, though. He said that, if we didn’t have the war, Saddam would be more accommodating, which is true because you are more accommodating when you are not dead. It’s really hard to buy somebody dinner when you’re dead. So, in effect, he’s actually correct by accident. INGRAHAM: Well, Iran — Iran might not have been the problem it is today, but the idea that he — it was going to be Saddam the milquetoast if we didn’t invade. I just — I was desperately looking to follow that logic. But you know, when NBC is involved, Greg, all bets are off. All bets are off. GUTFELD: Yes. Can’t stomach victory. You’ve got a war that you’ve won. Enjoy it. INGRAHAM: Winning is not fun. We’re supposed to be America on our knees, begging for mercy all the time. You don’t understand that. We need to apologize, Greg. Get used to it. GUTFELD: I am. Believe me. I’m married. To give readers an idea just how absurd Engel’s comments were, even the liberal Mediaite found this segment to its liking. Now that’s saying something.

Journalism Institute Honors Dan Rather; He Calls for ‘Trust-Busting’ Our Media Monopoly

The Poynter Institute welcomed disgraced former CBS anchor Dan Rather to share his thoughts on his long career and on the media in general this week. In an interview with Poynter’s Mallary Tenore , he complained “So often, particularly covering politics, enterprises that describe themselves as journalistic enterprises, and journalists who describe themselves as journalists, in fact just become transmission belts.” That’s exactly what Poynter’s interview was, a transmission belt for Rather’s lamest hits, including how the press needs a “spine transplant” and his shameless insistence that his phony-documents Texas Air National Guard story is still true. If Poynter cared about the reputation of journalism, why continue to entertain and spread doubt about the falsehood of Rather’s most atrocious “scoop”? The only thing fresh here is Rather’s growing socialism , as he insists (just like Bill Moyers) that money is corrupting politics and the government needs to break some alleged media monopoly where only four mega-corporations distribute most of America’s news: So number one is journalists need to get back to their business of being patriotic journalists in a free and democratic country and perform their function as watchdogs, as part of the system of checks and balances. We all know that huge sums of money are corrupting the whole political process, beginning with elections. For example, the last presidential election in this country, when all was said and done and you put everything together, costs more than $2 billion. That’s what was spent through the primaries, through the general election, all told. That money, not all of it came from special interests, but the bulk of it came from special interests — big pharmaceutical companies, big broadcasting networks, television, radio, electronic, big labor — and that’s a very short list. But you have a more recent example here in Florida where just to win a primary, at least two candidates spend what, more than $50 million or $60 million of their own money. This has reached the serious out-of-whack stage. So you say how can we improve coverage? Getting serious about where the money comes from, who gives it to whom, for what purpose — and most of it is given for a purpose. The case can be made — and I’m here to make it — that very large, international corporations, conglomerates control the government, and I would include some elements of big labor in that. The public is not well-served by political coverage as it is today. And I think it has to be noted, and there’s no joy in noting this, that in many important ways, very big business is in bed with big government and whoever’s in power in Washington, whether it be Republicans or Democrats — not in the public interest, but in the business interest of the huge corporations and in the staying in power business of those in Washington. And this seriously affects news coverage. Someone might say, well what is he talking about? Well let me give you an example. As recently as the 1950s, mid-1950s, there were more than 50 news enterprises, which is to say businesses, in the country that could accurately be described as having national distribution or large regional distribution. Now, there are no more than six, and I would argue only four, very large conglomerate, international corporations who control more than 80 percent of the national distribution of news. This is out of whack . Let me pause and say I’ve never worked for anybody in the enterprise other than a profit-making enterprise. I believe in the capital system, but as applied to media, we have in no small degree monopolies now. Now a great Republican president, Theodore Roosevelt did his party great service, and more importantly his country a great service, by breaking up the trust, which is to say the monopolies at the turn of the 20th century …. I’m not a business person, but in the end I think they’re not in the best interest of American business. I recognize that one gets criticized very heavily when get into this area, but I’m at the age and stage in my own career where I try to draw from my experience. I love this country, I want the country to be better for my children and grandchildren as most Americans do. And when and if the public finally get focused on this — that too few big international companies control too much of the national news distribution — then I think it may change. But until the public really understands what is happening with this, and understands that it is not a special pleading of journalists such as myself, can we come back to a really vibrant, truly independent, fiercely independent press that is important to the survival of freedom and representing government as we know it. Rather should really be writing for The Nation or Mother Jones, with this kind of hard-left talk about capitalism despoiling democracy. Poynter’s Tenore is especially embarrassing when asking Rather about the latest Internet trends, where he is clearly not well versed. He claimed “There are very few journalism enterprises on the Internet” and couldn’t answer whether he has his own personal Facebook page:  “I don’t think so.” Shouldn’t a journalist who insists his craft is so grievously lacking be a little more up-to-date?

Katy Perry Goes Futuristic In ‘Teenage Dream’ German TV Spot

Pop star shoots 90-second commercial to current single as she channels characters including Marilyn Monroe. By James Dinh Katy Perry in her commercial for German TV channel ProSieben’s “Star Force” Photo: Capitol/ ProSieben From whipped-cream-loaded bras to pink cotton candy clouds, Katy Perry has delivered her share of eye-catching visuals throughout the unveiling of her Teenage Dream album. And in a new commercial for German TV channel ProSieben’s “Star Force,” she keeps the momentum going as she cranks up the colors and jumps into the future. In the 90-second spot , which is basically an alternative, shortened mini-video for her single “Teenage Dream,” the singer plays a sort of singing robot inside the walls of a beaming city building from the future. As it begins, we see a woman with lots of frosted makeup robotically walk alongside skintight-clad space people towards a moving door. They approach a still and assumingly “turned off” pop star until a juke box turns on and plays the familiar tune. Bringing to life a futuristic Katy Perry, the singer channels Marilyn Monroe’s iconic fluttering-white-dress look. The singer then transforms into a 1950s housewife with a polka-dot geometric dress. But with a blink of an eye, that look is gone in favor of a superhero-gone-sex-kitten look. Riding a flaring rocket that floats before a building window, Perry shoots into the city lights before doing her spokesperson drop: “We love to entertain you.” The commercial serves as a drastic change from the singer’s official video for “Teenage Dream,” which depicts her driving around the sunny hills of California and canoodling and dancing the day away in an empty parking lot. In one clip, she serves up as sing-along robot while the other portrays her “come venture with me” persona. Even though both clips remain vastly different from one another, the carefree atmosphere is still apparent. Whether they’re dancing around a beach half-naked or decked out in 1950s attire, Perry is surrounded by a party you could only wish to be part of. Which “Teenage Dream” concept do you prefer: the road trip romp or the futuristic extravaganza? Share your thoughts below! Related Photos The Evolution Of: Katy Perry Related Artists Katy Perry
