‘Dark Shadows’ Score A Far Cry From Slapstick Trailer

By John Mitchell Johnny Depp in “Dark Shadows” Photo: Warner Bros So we’ve been talking a lot about that gonzo first trailer for “Dark Shadows.” It’s got its defenders and its detractors and that’s all pretty well documented , so we’re not going to spill any more ink on it. But now Warner Bros. has muddied the waters a bit by releasing Danny Elfman’s full score for the film — and it’s definitely not the score to a slapstick comedy. First things first, the trailer unquestionably makes “Dark Shadows” seem like a farce. We’ve argued that’s not necessarily a bad thing — sometimes a radical overhaul is what it takes to reinvent something old for modern audiences (see: “Charlie’s Angels,” “Mission Impossible”) — but the tone set in the trailer is a complete departure from what everyone expected, while Elfman’s score, which can be heard in its entirety on WB’s Watertower Music , seems perfect for the film that fans of the TV show thought they were getting. Strange, right? Elfan’s score is rich, deep and dark. It is heavy on strings, ambient sounds and atmosphere. The drama factor is high and there’s little evidence of slapstick. Tracks like “Killing Dr. Hoffman,” “Deadly Handshake” and “Barnabas Collins Comes Home” have an almost menacing and methodic feel, and “Dumping the Body” and “Widow’s Hill” are rife with shadowy action. The music for the film is kind of amazing, actually. (Should Danny Elfman begin readying for his fifth Oscar nomination?) But what is most exceptional about it is how little it fits the film Burton had us expecting. A day after dropping “Theraflu,” the Louis Vuitton Don dropped a second single, this time with his G.O.O.D. Music cohorts on Thursday night. “Mercy” not only features rhymes from Yeezy, but Big Sean , Pusha T and 2 Chainz as well. The track, which premiered on Chicago’s WGCI, was released on iTunes at midnight in conjunction with the religious holiday Good Friday. Big Sean and Pusha T set things off, while Yeezy and 2 Chainz bring up the rear lyrically. For 2 Chainz, who recently signed to Def Jam Records, being featured on such a high-profile track has further validated his success of late. “I’m excited about it,” 2 Chainz said on Thursday during a Def Jam-orchestrated press conference call. Though he isn’t signed to West, 2 Chainz said he’s done so much work with Yeezy that he forgot what his “Mercy” verse sounded like. “I’ve done a lot of work with ‘Ye for, like, a year now, and it was one of those songs where I called him and I told him, ‘Man, play my verse over the phone because I don’t remember,’ ” he said. “That’s a good look to add to the r

By Elizabeth Lancaster Aziz Ansari Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Aziz Ansari has been keeping pretty busy lately, working on everything from his full-time “Parks and Recreation” gig to a buzzed-about cameo in Kanye West and Jay-Z’s “Otis” music video last year. After Ansari’s feature in the Watch the Throne clip and his and Kanye’s joint participation in Nike’s Kobe System videos, fans are speculating about the pair’s next step together. Could a musical partnership be in the works? Not anytime soon, according to Ansari. MTV News caught up with the comedian in Central Park, where he was taking time off from his busy schedule to rep his inner Tom Haverford and ceremonially mow a stretch of grass for New York City’s Central Park Conservancy. After safely dismounting his lawnmower, Ansari told us of his pal ‘Ye, “We [collaborated] on the video, but music-wise, not at this point. I haven’t dipped my hat into that ring.” In the meantime, divert your attention to Ansari’s newest standup special, “Dangerously Delicious.” Following in the footsteps of Louis C.K., Aziz’s hour-long special was released exclusively for download on his site for $5 and is as fresh as it is hilarious. The comedian guarantees there are no overlaps with his Buried Alive Tour material, so even if you are going to see him at Montclair, New Jersey’s Wellmont Theatre next week, you can treat yo’self with this special — and continue to hope for more Kanye/Aziz magic in the future. Kanye’s G.O.O.D. Music Album Is ‘Pretty Close’ To Finished

By Rob Markman, with reporting by Nadeska Alexis Kanye West Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage Good things come to those who wait, and according to Mannie Fresh , Kanye West ‘s G.O.O.D. Music compilation is “pretty close” to being finished. Still no word on an actual release date, but the former Cash Money hitmaker is excited about his sessions with Yeezy’s crew. “The cool thing about G.O.O.D. Music is it’s a bunch of great ideas and I’m one of those ideas,” he told MTV News on Thursday at the South by Southwest festival. “[Kanye’s] trying to find the most talented producers, most talented artists, put ’em all in a room and say, ‘Go for it. Y’all energy, like whatever is creative to y’all.’ ” It all sounds pretty organic. “I just kinda went to the Watch the Throne concert. Word got back that I was in there and we linked up from there,” Fresh said about his and Kanye’s initial meeting. “Next thing you know, I was at his crib playing beats, [and] he was just like, ‘Dude I like mostly everything you played. Sign right here.’ ” It’s still unclear whether Fresh has actually signed on with G.O.O.D. Music, but he has clearly been putting in a lot of work with the team, which includes Yeezy, Big Sean, Pusha T and producer Hit-Boy. “The cool thing is, in hip-hop history, when have we ever got along? It’s a cool thing that we’re sitting at the table, all of us get along on one accord trying to make something great — G.O.O.D. Music,” Fresh said. Much of the G.O.O.D. Music album is still shrouded in mystery. We know the crew has been recording in London, but beyond that there hasn’t been any information regarding an official album title or singles. “It’s pretty close, I would say it’s pretty close,” Mannie said about the LP’s expected completion date. “Songs phenomenal, everything. It’s an album that’s all over the place, it’s not just one thing. It’s not just that you’re gonna hear some Southern hip-hop or whatever. And it seems her sensible attitude in part explains her longevity. In an interview with The Sun, when asked about the criticism Adele received from designer Karl Lagerfeld , she had these wise words. “That’s horrible. That’s ridiculous, that’s just the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. I don’t like it when anybody says anything bad about anyone — I don’t like it. Adele’s a great talent and how much she weighs has nothing to do with it,” she said. “The thing for Adele to remember is at the end of the day, whether you rise or fall, it has so much to do with how you sustain yourself and keep your integrity and your inner strength.” Her last bit of advice seems relevant not only to living pop stars, but also to two pop stars we lost in the last year. “It is all about who you surround yourself with — friends and people who really do care about you, and care about your well-being beyond being a superstar. That’s the most important thing,” she said, later addressing the losses of Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston. “One thing I was struck by with Whitney Houston is I remember she sort of came out as a singer around the same time I did,” Madonna added . “I remember looking at her singing and hearing people talk about her, and just thinking, ‘Oh my God. She’s such a beautiful woman and my God, what an incredible voice. The Throne’s ‘Otis’ Maybach Now A $60,000 Work Of Art

Funds raised from car’s auction will benefit Save the Children’s efforts in East Africa. By Rob Markman The Maybach in The Throne’s video for “Otis” Photo: Universal It seems that anything Jay-Z or Kanye West touches turns to gold, even their mangled Maybach-mobile. In the most memorable scene from their 2011 “Otis” video , the Throne rode around in a one-of-a-kind Maybach, chopped and screwed to their specifications. Last week, the $350,000 remixed vehicle sold for $60,000 at Phillips de Pury & Company’s New York Contemporary Art Evening Auction. The reason for the seemingly low bid? Well, the ‘Bach isn’t exactly street-ready. The gaudy chop-shop display wasn’t for naught as the proceeds of the sale will go to Save the Children, an organization that fights battles on behalf of children around the world. “Jay-Z and Kanye West are towering figures in contemporary culture. They have greatly contributed to the artificial barriers between art, music, fashion and cinema to come down,” Simon de Pury, chairman of Phillips de Pury and Company, said in a press release . “Their video for ‘Otis’ became an instant classic. The Maybach they have transformed for it has the starring role.” DUB magazine president and co-founder Myles Kovacs estimated that the custom job cost the Throne around $150,000, but by removing the vehicle’s doors, cutting off the roof and switching the bumper and grill, Hov and Yeezy dramatically lowered the value of the car. “The thing is, the value of that car is nothing now, you couldn’t drive it on the street,” he said in an August 2011 MTV News interview . “It would start malfunctioning big time.” If you think of the “Otis” Maybach as a piece of art rather than a fully functioning car, then the $60,000 auction fetch makes more sense. Last year, the Louis Vuitton Don hooked up with Jay-Z to release their tag-team Watch the Throne LP, and now the fashion-forward MC has collaborated with Italian designer Giuseppe Zanotti to drop a swanky pair of high heels . The shoes will fetch far more than a Throne CD though, with a price tag of around 4,420 euros (approximately $5,800). Folks first caught a glimpse of the bone-color, pearl-embroidered heels during Paris Fashion Week last October. The buzz around Yeezy’s women’s line was heavy and the reviews were mixed, though the Giuseppe heels seemed to be an overwhelming favorite. For now, Kanye and Giuseppe’s hot-stepper is only available through the trendy French retailer Colette . For ballettes on a budget, there is a second, all-black strappy design made of velvet leather that goes for $930. Kanye recounted his days of learning shoe design from the Italian fashion icon back in January during his unforgettable Twitter spree. “I snuck to Giuseppe Zanotti Factory still under contract and learned to design women’s shoes for 2 years before my first show in Paris,” he wrote. In August of last year, Zanotti praised Kanye’s dedication to fashion . “[Kanye] loves learning about shoes both the design and construction, and we’ve tried to design something together,” he told Womens Wear Daily.
