Bonds’ son pleads no contest to assault (AP)

The 20-year-old son of former San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds has pleaded no contest to misdemeanor vandalism and assault charges stemming from a fight with his mother. Nikolai Bonds entered the plea Thursday as part of a deal with San Mateo County prosecutors that saw three additional misdemeanor charges dropped.

Braves beat Rays 3-1 to take series (AP)

Jason Heyward homered and Troy Glaus drove in two runs to back seven strong innings by Tim Hudson in the Atlanta Braves’ 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night. The Braves took two of three games in an interleague matchup of division leaders. They’ve won four of five overall and 11 of 12 at home to improve to 21-7 at Turner Field.

Mexico tops France, needs tie to advance (AP)

Substitutes Javier Hernandez and Cuauhtemoc Blanco scored a goal each Thursday in Mexico’s 2-0 win over France at the World Cup, leaving the French on the verge of elimination from Group A. Hernandez ran onto Rafael Marquez’s pass and rounded goalkeeper Hugo Lloris before guiding the ball home in the 64th minute.

Ortiz’s HR helps Red Sox sweep Arizona (AP)

David Ortiz hit a two-run homer, Marco Scutaro had three RBIs and the Boston Red Sox beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-5 on Thursday night. John Lackey (8-3) pitched six innings as Boston became the only team with three eight-game winners. The right-hander labored through 112 pitches and earned the win when Adrian Beltre hit an RBI single in the sixth that gave the Red Sox a 5-4 lead.

Buehrle, ChiSox extend Bucs’ skid to 11 (AP)

Mark Buehrle allowed two runs over 7 1-3 innings to become the winningest pitcher since interleague play began, and the White Sox ran the Pirates’ losing streak to 11 games by holding on to win 5-4 Thursday night. Buehrle (5-6) was in control until being pulled with the White Sox leading 5-1 in the eighth, when the Pirates scored three times against three pitchers to get to within a run.

Wallace to start at center for Celtics (AP)

Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers says Rasheed Wallace will start at center in Game 7 of the NBA finals. Wallace is replacing Kendrick Perkins, who sprained ligaments in his right knee Tuesday night in the first quarter of Boston’s 89-67 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Rivers joked that he went with Wallace over Glen “Big Baby” Davis for Thursday’s game because “he’s old.
