But the racists believe he’s a racist.” As my grandmother used to say — a hit dog will holler. pic.twitter.com/kC34Ldd0is — Andrew Gillum (@AndrewGillum) October 25, 2018   Political divisiveness The candidates were asked whether the divisiveness in the nation’s political discourse has pushed some people to the edge, prompting actions like sending pipe bombs in the mail to high-profile Democrats. Gillum argued that DeSantis is part of the problem. He pointed to comments DeSantis made on Fox News in which he warned Floridians not to “monkey this up” by voting for his Black opponent. Soon after DeSantis blew that racist dog whistle, neo-Nazis began sending out robocalls that included jungle music and monkey calls in the background. “My opponent has run this race very close to the Trump handbook where we call each other names.”   Teacher salaries Gillum noted that teachers’ salaries in Florida are ranked the 45th lowest of the 50 states. “If my grandmother was here, she wouldn’t just say that’s a shame, she would say that’s a crying shame.”   Gillum called out DeSantis for telling lies about his policy positions “In the last debate, Mr. DeSantis lied 21 times. Now, today makes the 22nd, and we’ve just started this debate.”   “Mr. DeSantis in the last debate lied 21 times. 21 times. And now today makes the 22nd and we just started this debate.” – @AndrewGillum #FLGovDebate pic.twitter.com/L6r7zXdpDE — Brynna Quillin (@brynnaquillin) October 24, 2018 Medicaid expansion and healthcare policy DeSantis tried desperately to defend his multiple votes in Congress to end Obamacare without having a suitable replacement. Gillum explained to the former congressman that healthcare is a top issue for Floridians. He recalled his childhood experiences. “I remember having to wait for the free dental clinic to come through my neighborhood to have my teeth cleaned.”   DeSantis questioned the moderator’s data from the bipartisan Congressional Budget Office’s report that rejected the healthcare plan that the former congressman and his GOP colleagues promoted. Gillum delivered this zinger. “Mr. DeSantis could have a monopoly on his opinion, but he doesn’t have a monopoly on facts. Facts matter.”   Corruption scandal One of the big questions before the debate rematch was how Gillum would respond to an onslaught from DeSantis over an FBI probe into possible Tallahassee government corruption, in which the mayor was reportedly not the target of the investigation. On Tuesday, text messages were made public about the source of tickets Gillum received to the Broadway musical “Hamilton” that appear to contradict his statements at the first debate on the issue. “In the state of Florida we have 99 issues, and Hamilton ain’t one of them.”   The Republican taxes overhaul Gillum called the GOP tax overhaul that boosted the bottom line for corporations a failure for working class families. The Republicans promised that there would be a “magical trickle down” to poor people. Instead of a pay raise to working class families, the tax overhaul gave the nation something else. “They have drilled a deep hole into the national debt and working people haven’t seen any appreciable rise in their wages.”   . @AndrewGillum delivered a powerful rejection of Trump's hateful politics of division at last night's debate for Florida governor. We're with Gillum! pic.twitter.com/FuO5cOLsFV — MoveOn (@MoveOn) October 22, 2018 Families continue to struggle financially While the Trump administration and Republicans tout falling unemployment rates, wages have not increased. “Forty-four percent of people in the state of Florida say they can’t make ends meet at the end of the month. Mr. DeSantis’ big donors may be doing just fine. They’ve got their yachts and boats. For the rest of the working people in this state, they simply want a wage they could live on.”   Immigration “We’re not going to criminalize people of their personhood simply because you’re a brown-skinned person or that you speak a language that may be of a foreign tongue to Mr. DeSantis or you live in a neighborhood that may include more brown people. That doesn’t, in and of itself, subject you to racial profiling. That’s the essence of what he would be promoting.”   SEE ALSO: Ron DeSantis’ Racist History Didn’t Just Begin With His ‘Monkey’ Attack On Andrew Gillum Megyn Kelly Hypocritical On Abuse Of Women [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3833255″ overlay=”true”]

5 Takeaways From Andrew Gillum’s Florida Debate Rematch Against Ron DeSantis

Read this article:

T allahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum ’s masterful debate performance on Sunday was no fluke. Gillum continued to dominate his GOP rival for Florida governor Ron DeSantis in their second debate Wednesday night at Broward College in Davie, Florida. SEE ALSO: Andrew Gillum Called For An End To Black Voter Apathy, And Got It One of the big questions before the rematch was how Gillum would respond to an onslaught from DeSantis over an FBI probe into possible Tallahassee government corruption, in which the mayor is reportedly not the target of the investigation. On Tuesday, text messages were made public about the source of tickets Gillum received to the Broadway musical Hamilton that appears to contradict his statements at the first debate on the issue. Here are five things we’ve learned about Gillum and DeSantis as they stood under the spotlight on the debate stage for the second time.   1. Gillum can handle the pressure The Tallahassee mayor was clearly prepared to address the pink elephant in the room. DeSantis raised the FBI investigation issue about 40 minutes into the debate, prompted by Gillum accusing him of lying in TV attack ads. Gillum turned the tables by demanding that DeSantis release records of his $145,000 in taxpayer-funded travel as a Congressman. DeSantis resigned his congressional post to focus on this gubernatorial campaign. The former lawmaker has declined to reveal how he paid for several trips, including travel to New York City to appear on Fox News to increase his public profile for his Florida governor campaign. Ron DeSantis spent $145,000 in tax-payer money to travel to New York for Fox News interviews. #RonDeLiar https://t.co/31zAtr8tQt — Florida Democrats (@FlaDems) October 24, 2018 2. Gillum knows how to connect DeSantis always looked uncomfortable on stage and defensive when discussing his record. By contrast, Gillum was masterful at weaving his compelling personal story into responses—touching on key themes that most people can relate to. The mayor talked about the sacrifices of his working-class parents who were determined to make sure he received a proper education. Gillum also frequently dropped in pearls of wisdom that he learned from his grandmother. As my grandmother used to say, a hit dog will holler. And boy oh boy, @RonDeSantisFL … #FLGovDebate — Andrew Gillum (@AndrewGillum) October 24, 2018 3. DeSantis doesn’t have an answer on healthcare Healthcare is one of the policy issues that’s important to Floridians. It was clear that DeSantis has no answers to their concerns. Gillum pointed out that his opponent was one of Trump’s strongest supporters in the failed Republican attempt to repeal Obamacare without a viable replacement. I believe healthcare is a right. @RonDeSantisFL doesn’t. Facts matter. pic.twitter.com/NbXlTBJZlt — Andrew Gillum (@AndrewGillum) October 24, 2018 4. Yeah, DeSantis is racist The moderator indirectly asked DeSantis if he’s a racist. He pointed to the former congressman warning Florida voters not to “ monkey this up ” by voting for Gillum, who would become the state’s first African-American governor. He also highlighted some of DeSantis’ long history  of associating with white nationalists. DeSantis unconvincingly denied that he’s a racist, raising his voice as if that would convince viewers. The mayor had a golden response. “I’m not calling him a racist,” Gillum said. “But the racists believe he’s a racist.” FL Governors Debate just got *intense*: @AndrewGillum says of his GOP opponent @RonDeSantisFL “I'm not calling him a racist. I'm just saying the racists believe he's a racist.” — Alex Wagner (@alexwagner) October 24, 2018 5. Gillum unabashedly progressive Gillum showed that he was unwilling to yield on key issues that are important to his base when DeSantis pressed him. He stood firm on increasing the minimum wage and taxing the state’s wealthiest companies to increase teacher salaries and to pay for early childhood education, even though DeSantis tried to create fear that those fiscal policies would drive companies out Florida. A ndrew Gillum was fighting off “smear tactics” and said he was ready to talk about the “issues” in the hours ahead of his Florida gubernatorial debate rematch against Republican Ron DeSantis on Wednesday night in West Palm Beach. READ MORE: 5 Takeaways From Andrew Gillum’s Masterful Debate Dismantling Of Ron DeSantis The Tallahassee mayor and Democratic nominee who could become the state’s first Black governor’s comments came in a tweet Wednesday morning that was likely in reference to the onslaught of Republican- and white nationalist-funded efforts like this week’s racist robocalls to voters. My opponent is trying to do everything he can to distract & use smear tactics—but the second debate is tonight & here’s what I’ll be ready to talk about: issues that Floridians care about. I’m running for governor to represent all of them & no distractions can change that. — Andrew Gillum (@AndrewGillum) October 24, 2018 Some of that negative attention has included  allegations of corruption against Gillum, who has been accused of inappropriately accepting free tickets to see a Broadway play in New York City in 2016. Gillum has denied the accusations and there have never been any criminal charges over the allegations. Still, debate viewers can expect for that topic to dominate the rematch early on considering the resurgence of the topic in the media. Another surefire bet for the debate is the topic of racism, something that has been steadily streaming out of DeSantis’ campaign since Gillum won the Democratic primary in August. The day after Gillum’s victory, DeSantis made it a point toll Florida voters not to “monkey up” the election by electing a Democrat (who happened to be Black). More apparent  proof that DeSantis is at the very least a white supremacy sympathizer has been leaking along the way, culminating on Monday with a fresh round of racist robocalls that featured monkey sounds in the background. Even still, with all of that background noise trying to drown out the very loud racism associated with DeSantis, it would seem that Floridians remained more concerned with those same “issues” Gillum said he was ready to talk about in Wednesday’s debate than the conveniently timed political “distractions” that routinely come up in campaigns with national implications. As of Wednesday, the mayor was polling nearly 6 percentage points ahead of DeSantis, who exposed himself during the first debate Sunday as being more worried about attacking Gillum than with policy. Forget the polls — I don’t care about them. When we vote, we win! I’m ready for all of us to #BringItHome , Florida. pic.twitter.com/Mi2PqC0OH0 — Andrew Gillum (@AndrewGillum) October 24, 2018 The second debate starts at 7 p.m. EDT and will be filmed on the campus of Broward College. It will be televised live across the state. Want to watch the debate but don’t live in Florida? Click here to live stream the debate via the WPBF website for the local ABC affiliate. Andrew Gillium’s Second Debate Against Ron DeSantis Takes On A New Sense Of Urgency

It will be live streamed on WPBF’s website and rebroadcast on C-SPAN for those outside the local viewing area, according to the Sun-Sentinel . My opponent is trying to do everything he can to distract & use smear tactics—but the second debate is tonight & here’s what I’ll be ready to talk about: issues that Floridians care about. I’m running for governor to represent all of them & no distractions can change that. — Andrew Gillum (@AndrewGillum) October 24, 2018 Gillum, who could become the state’s first African-American governor if elected, decidedly out-dueled DeSantis in the first debate on Sunday night. But the Trump-backed candidate has new ammunition to fire at the Tallahassee mayor. Text messages made public on Tuesday about tickets to the Broadway musical Hamilton appear to contradict statements Gillum made during the first debate, the Sun-Sentinel reported . Questions surrounding the source of the tickets are part of an FBI probe into possible Tallahassee government corruption, in which Gillum is reportedly not the target of the investigation. Still, DeSantis used the FBI investigation to attack Gillum at Sunday’s debate. A poll released on Tuesday found that Gillum has a four-point lead over DeSantis, which could help to explain why DeSantis hasn’t hesitated to use race instead of ideas to defeat Gillum. Less than 24 hours after winning the GOP nomination in August, DeSantis blew a racist dog whistle when he warned Florida voters not to “monkey this up” by voting for Gillum. Not long after, white supremacists answered the whistle by sending out racist robocalls. Another series of robocalls attacking Gillum went out during Sunday’s debate. DeSantis has a long history of associating with white nationalists. Ahead of their first debate, Gillum called on DeSantis to stick to the issues. He’s made that request again. The Tallahassee mayor was head and shoulders above DeSantis on policy questions Sunday. For example, Gillum displayed his masterful knowledge on taxes and Medicaid , which are hot button issues for Floridians.
