Grammys Score Best Ratings In A Decade

Performances by Justin Bieber, Eminem, Lady Gaga, more draw 26.5 million viewers. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber and Usher perform at the Grammys on Sunday Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage It stands to reason that any TV show boasting performances from the bands that have sold more than 15 million records over the past year between them would be a huge hit. Which is why, thanks to Eminem , Lady Antebellum, Justin Bieber , Lady Gaga and Katy Perry , Sunday night’s 53rd annual Grammy Awards posted the best numbers for the program in a decade. The Hollywood Reporter reported Monday (February 14) that, according to preliminary numbers from Nielsen, the show was watched by 26.5 million viewers, a 3 percent improvement over last year’s Grammy numbers (25.8 million) and the best figure for the show since 2001. The combination of a relentlessly hyped Gaga interview that aired on “60 Minutes” just before the show, combined with a smorgasbord of performing stars that ranged from legends such as Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger to Christina Aguilera , Cee Lo Green , Bruno Mars , a rare appearance by hip-hop icon Dr. Dre and surprise Album of the Year winners Arcade Fire helped make the show a must-see event. And though viewers were treated the spectacle of Gaga finally busting out of her space egg during the show, Green frolicking with outer-space Henson Puppets and Gwyneth Paltrow, and Bieber dancing amid a stage full of break-dancing ninjas, when the dust settled, the dark-horse win by Arcade Fire provided the show with a water-cooler moment that kept viewers interested until the entire three-and-a-half-hour spectacle wrapped up. ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Gets Title, First Photo

Film studio announces name of Spidey prequel and releases first official pic of Andrew Garfield fully suited up. By Kara Warner Andrew Garfield as The Amazing Spider-Man Photo: Sony Pictures These last few weeks of movie news have been big ones for comic book fans. The highly anticipated “X-Men: First Class” trailer debuted on Thursday and, kicking things off this week, a new image and the official title for the new Spider-Man movie have been revealed. Columbia Pictures announced on Monday (February 14) that the flick would be titled “The Amazing Spider-Man” and simultaneously released a photo of Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, the first official shot of Garfield in the full-on suit. In the months leading up to these big Spider-Man reveals, we’ve seen various photos from the set, including Garfield in the suit sans mask . Even former onscreen Spidey Tobey Maguire weighed in, giving his stamp of approval after seeing an image of the new getup. “I thought it looked cool,” Maguire told MTV News at Sundance last month. “I mean, I think they did a great job with the design of it, and I’m excited to see it in action.” Garfield told us a while back that Maguire has been especially gracious about the “Social Network” star taking over the role he made famous in three films with director Sam Raimi. “He sent me a lovely message through a mutual friend,” Garfield said . “He gave me his support, and it meant a great deal, of course, because part of the reason I love and have continued to love this character was because of his portrayal. To step into those shoes is no mean feat. It was generous of him to reach out and say something, so I’m thankful.” “The Amazing Spider-Man” is currently in production and is being shot entirely in 3-D. Directed by Marc Webb, the comic book film also stars Emma Stone , Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen, and Sally Field. It will hit theaters on July 3, 2012. Sundance 2011 Preview: Tobey Maguire, Paul Rudd, Demi Moore And More!

MTV Movies team will be on the ground in Park City, Utah, to bring you the latest from the snowy film fest! By Eric Ditzian Tobey Maguire and Elizabeth Banks in “The Details” Photo: Ergo Films By the time you read this, the MTV Movies team will be hurtling about 550 miles per hour through the sky on our way to the 2011 Sundance Film Festival . We can’t get there soon enough. It’s been 12 months since we last trekked up and down Main Street in Park City, Utah, bringing you interviews with top talent like Kristen Stewart and Ryan Reynolds, reviews of the most anticipated premieres, and the inside scoop on parties, swag suites and more. And now, it’s about to happen all over again. Starting Thursday evening (January 20) and continuing well into next week, MTV News will be your go-to spot for the latest news coming out of Sundance. Keep checking back for everything there is to know about the festival — and, man, is there a lot to know. Paul Rudd will be sweeping into town to premiere “My Idiot Brother,” his upcoming comedy co-starring Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel and Emily Mortimer. Ed Helms has a comedy too; he stars in “Cedar Rapids” opposite John C. Reilly and Anne Heche. And, well, what are we to make of “The Details,” which stars Tobey Maguire, Banks and Laura Linney? Check out its plot description: “When hungry raccoons discover worms living under the sod in a young couple’s backyard, the pest problem sets off a wild and absurd chain reaction of domestic tension, infidelity, organ donation and murder by way of bow and arrow.” Yep, that one is most definitely high on our list of must-sees. Also exciting is “Margin Call,” a drama set during the 2008 financial crisis starring a killer collection of Hollywood talent: Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Demi Moore and Stanley Tucci. Two music-focused premieres have also caught our eye. Adam Yauch has directed “Fight for Your Right Revisited,” a short film that takes place after the events of that classic 1987 Beastie Boys video and which stars Seth Rogen, Danny McBride and Elijah Wood. Additionally, Michael Rapaport is presenting “Beats, Rhymes and Life,” a documentary about the “rise and influence” of A Tribe Called Quest. It’s going to be another great year. By festival’s end, we’ll be exhausted from lack of sleep, weary-eyed from far too many screenings, and sore from hiking up and down Main Street in the freezing cold. But you know what? We’ll be psyched to do it all over again in 2012. For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Spider-Man Will Use ‘Device’ To Shoot Webs, Emma Stone Says

Golden Globe nominee reveals change to MTV News on red carpet after first-look photo hints at modification to Spidey’s costume. By Eric Ditzian Emma Stone Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty After the geeky shock of seeing Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man for the first time wore off, savvy observers noticed a potentially huge clue hidden within the newly released first-look photo from Sony Pictures: Garfield’s boy wonder seemed to be sporting metal discs on his wrists, suggesting that he employs a mechanical device to shoot webs, rather than organically emitting them from his body. That would mean a sharp break from previous “Spider-Man” films — Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker shot webs directly from his wrists — but one that’s still in keeping with established comics lore. Recent story lines have shown both a Spidey with web-shooters and a Spidey able to naturally shoot webs on his own. The new photo, while tantalizing, offered no firm proof either way.

REVIEW: A Little Story Hardly Gets in the Way of Burlesque’s Big, Dumb Dazzle

With its trailer alone, Burlesque has already gotten tons of mileage out of its obvious camp value: You don’t put Cher in a movie these days — in a glitter mini-tuxedo, no less — if you’re angling for the National Board of Review’s Dull, Worthy Snoozer of the Year prize.

Burlesque’s Tyne Stecklein on Prayer Circles with Cher and Dancing with Michael Jackson

Tyne Stecklein’s having a pretty wild week: Her film Burlesque — in which she plays a specialty dancer named Jesse — opened today, and she also performed with her Burlesque co-star Christina Aguilera on Dancing with the Stars and at the American Music Awards. You can add those experiences to Stecklein’s list impressive feats: She used to dance with Cher during her Vegas show, and she even rehearsed with Michael Jackson for his “This Is It” tour shortly before his death. Movieline caught up with the 21-year-old dancer/actress yesterday to see how her breakneck schedule is treating her.

Bad Movies We Love: Spider-Man 3

We revived Bad Movies We Love last week with Cher’s Chastity , a quaint ’60s jam full of boring monologues and menacing lesbianism. But Movieline is barreling ahead with a film that combines superhero glitz, melodrama and the campy pizazz of a Gwen Stacy dye job: Spider-Man 3 . You think James Franco is fancy now with his Oscar buzz and amputee cred ? Wait until you revisit him in Spider-Man 3 , the film that pinned our disbelief under a boulder and forced us to saw it off using Topher Grace’s frosty tips. Are you emotionally ready to revisit when Spider-Man went emo?
