Hot Chelle Rae Soaking Up First VMA Trip

‘Tonight Tonight’ band tells MTV News it plans to stalk Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga at the big show. By Gil Kaufman Hot Chelle Rae Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — You always remember your first time. That’s why Nashville buzz band Hot Chelle Rae have spent this weekend soaking up every ounce of energy they can from the vortex of awesome surrounding Sunday’s 2011 VMAs . “It feels amazing. We are so stoked to be out here and not watching from the couch this year,” said “Tonight Tonight” singer Ryan Follese. “It’s gonna be really, really exciting.” Asked whom he would like to celeb-stalk at the show, Follese didn’t hesitate, picking Nicki Minaj as his obsessive target of choice, based on his hope that she “might have on something insane.” Guitarist Nash Overstreet said he had his sights set on Lady Gaga , but was afraid she might be too dangerous to stalk because it’s possible she’d be wearing something “that could kill you.” When they’re not plotting who to spy on at the show, Hot Chelle Rae have been busy putting the finishing touches on their new album, which bassist Ian Keaggy said is slated to come out in November. “If you like ‘Tonight Tonight,’ honestly, then you’re going to love the record,” Follese said. “There are moments of songs about tense feelings, but for the most part it’s an upbeat, really, really fun record.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Topher Grace Recalls His Lucky Sprain On ‘When I Was 17’

The star of ‘Take Me Home Tonight’ explains how he stumbled into acting as a teen. By Alex Chapman Topher Grace Photo: MTV News Before Topher Grace became a household name as the lovably discomfited Eric on “That ’70s Show,” he was just another teenager looking for something to do. On the upcoming episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” the star of “Take Me Home Tonight” (which hits theaters next week) recalls his big break, which surprisingly stemmed from a turn in his high-school play. “When I was 17, I made the varsity tennis team, and I wound up spraining my ankle twice, so I couldn’t do that that spring,” Grace mentions in the upcoming episode. The former athlete tried out for the lead role in his high school’s production of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” a part he didn’t expect to land. “I really didn’t think I’d get it. There were some kids who were really great actors, and I still maintain that they were better actors then I am,” Grace humbly notes. Turns out, Topher’s theatrical turn would change his life as he knew it. “So the crazy thing about that play is this girl who was a friend of mine — her parents were big-time Hollywood producers. They wrote for ‘Saturday Night Live,’ they wrote ‘Wayne’s World’ and ‘Tommy Boy,’ and they came up to me after the play and said, ‘We’ll call you at some point,’ ” Grace recalls. But the actor misinterpreted the thrilling news, thinking he was being pursued to go on coffee runs instead of auditions. “I thought they needed a P.A. on one of their shows, so I said something really stupid.” Topher’s pal Gordon remembered the error, too: “He was like, ‘Yeah sure, baby. I’ll have my people call your people,’ ” Fast-forward nine months later, and the big-time producers had an opportunity for the actor that he almost couldn’t believe. “They called me and they said, ‘We’re making a sitcom about the ’70s.’ I still thought they wanted an assistant, but they said, ‘Oh no, we want you to audition.’ ” Turns out this little sitcom just happened to be the massive hit that launched Grace’s career. Don’t miss when Grace’s “Take Me Home Tonight” co-stars Anna Farris and Dan Fogler dish on their adolescent occupations in the newest episode of “When I Was 17,” premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV.

Lady Gaga Professes Love For Madonna, Says Pop Icon Supports and Approves of "Born This Way"

Lady Gaga has been accused of ripping off Madonna with her newest single, “Born This Way.” On the Tonight Show last night, she didn’t really refute this. “You know, there is really no one that is a more adoring and loving Madonna fan than me,” she said. “I am the hugest fan personally and professionally.” It sounds like the feeling is reciprocal, too. Lady Gaga on The Tonight Show – Full Interview “I got an email from her people sending me their love and support on behalf of the single,” Gaga said. “And if the queen says it shall be, then it shall be.” Indeed. Good enough for Madonna, good enough for us! The Lady, who performed “Born This Way” live at the Grammys Sunday, went on to explain to Jay Leno what the song means to her – and everybody: “Essentially, with the visuals and the music and lyrics, it’s about being able to know that when you were born, you weren’t just born in that moment.” “You have your entire life to realize the person that you’re potentially going to become and however you choose to be is part of your destiny.” “In this moment, if you don’t feel entirely happy and secure in who you are… it’s never too late to harness your confidence, your inner superstars.” “The freedom in the song, the R&B, early ’90s vibe it has, it’s so full of love and spirit, and I think that it’s the spirit people are reacting to the most.” “I just want everyone to rejoice and celebrate and be unafraid to be happy. It doesn’t always have to be so dark. It doesn’t always have to be sexy.” “Sometimes it’s wonderful just to celebrate life and kind of go to church with it.” Gaga recently admitted on 60 minutes that she smokes a lot of pot when she writes music. Whatever kind she partakes in, we gotta find some of it. What do you think of “Born This Way”?
